I really wanted to love this place but my fiancé and I left extremely disappointed. Usually, we're not ones to be nit picky in terms of food or service but our experience was really below average, especially for the price we paid. Firstly, the service wasn't that bad. Our server seemed new as she would forget a lot of things and stumble quite a bit. However, it seemed like she was doing her best so it didn't bother us and we still tipped her a good amount because our food experience wasn't her fault. The food is why I only gave 2 stars. Unfortunately, my fiancé's filet mignon came out raw. He had asked for medium rare but the inside of the steak was blue raw to the point where it was inedible. Typically when you complain about your food, restaurants will replace your entire plate but in this case our server took the cut up steak from his plate and re cooked it to the point where it got tough and chewy :(. It was kind of gross how they took his chopped up steak, threw it on the grill and overcooked it and then just brought it back to our table and put it back on his plate. We understand mistakes happen, but the way they handled it disappointed us. My fiancé's food went from too raw to too cooked and he never enjoyed his meal. For the price we paid, we would expect to at least get a new steak instead of recooking his chewed up/chopped up one. That's also extremely unsanitary since he put his mouth on it and they put it back on the grill where they put other people's food. read more

Tim is always available but never in the way; he knows the menu and helps in our selection from among the awesome lunch menu selections. He recalls our previous visits and our menu choices from weeks ago, and invites us into new options we may not have originally considered. J Gilberts has been on the "must try" list for a while. It's close to home, there is parking that is free, and the menu looks to have a big variety on it. So saturday night I went. Reservation for 7 PM. good thing 495 was a parking lot. I couldn't find a dress code on the website so I looked at the pictures people shared on Yelp. I figured business casual. I was a bit overdressed as jeans and tees were all over. A few men in ties, ladies in dresses. The parking lot looked like a Mercedes/BMW dealership. I parked my Accord in the garage. I check in at the hostess desk and get seated toward the back of the restaurant. It's a bigger place than it looks from the street. After a few my waitress comes over and I order a Yuengling, available in a bottle. She pours into a cold glass. Nice touch. I decide on the ribeye with creamed corn & bacon and the mashed potatoes. The place is busy so it's enough time to finish my first beer and order another one. The food arrives...yum! The creamed corn & bacon is very good, mashed potatoes are very good. Over to the meat, the first part is a piece of fat. OK...more fat. Ugh. Finally I hit the good stuff, cooked just as ordered. It finished ok but seemed to be a bit smaller than advertised on the menu. Regardless, dinner was ok. I would recommend a reservation as the place was busy. read more

I live in walking distance from here and decided to go for my dad's birthday lunch on a Sunday (and while it seems like they're popular for their brunch, we ended up ordering nothing from the brunch menu other than the shrimp & grits). We all ordered coffee first which was fine. I had the salmon, which was dry and tiny. The side veggies were fine. All the dishes were unanimously voted as mediocre and not worth the price point for the filet mignon or the lobster mac&cheese. I'm quite disappointed that this didn't work out since I was looking forward to making it my new regular spot to walk to (recently moved here so I'm still on the hunt and open to suggestions!) When you walk into the place it gives off a fancy vibe that did not translate into the service since they all seemed like they did not know what was going on. I got the fixed menu and the first course of the crab bisque was so great that I wish I got that as a whole meal. The filet mignon I got was cooked correctly but seemed like low quality and bland. The mashed potatoes were great. They gave me not a ton of asparagus stalks and they were not great. The carrot cake was a large slice and really good. Overall, the food was all over the place. A fantastic atmosphere but with all the steak houses that are nearby in the area, I would not rank this one high among them. read more

Food and service are both mediocre. Nothing impressive except for the big price tag. We made an appointment for 6:15pm and waited for about 20 mins to be seated. (I don't understand why we made an appointment and still had to wait for so long) We ordered two appetizers and four entrees, and like the mixed seafood grill most. I ordered the scallops with risotto. The scallops were overcooked and chewy. My son's lamb chops were fine, the portion was big but too sweet to my liking. The two scallops and four shrimps in my daughter's mixed seafood grill were the best, juicy and tender. Lastly, my husband's steak was a big miss. He ordered medium rare and got a well-done. They agreed to replace it and we waited another 20-30 mins for it. The most disappointing part was no greetings (not even a "Happy Birthday") at all even though we marked in our reservation that the dinner was a birthday celebration. I am sorry to say this. But this restaurant is definitely not a place we want to visit again for any celebrations in the future. read more

This was our second time at J.Gilberts and Kimberly was our main server for both times. She made sure we were well catered for at all times and was very prompt with our requests. Dinner at J Gilbert's was average. We had reservations but had to wait a little bit before we were seated. Our waitress was sweet and checked in with us often. My pineapple martini was good but very sweet, almost like I was drinking juice. I had the oysters rockerfeller as an appetizer and it was very cheesy so flavor and texture wise, it was just ok. I had a petite filet and sea scallops. As you can see, the scallops were on the smaller size. The sides in my plate were much bigger than my actual surf and turf. My filet was cooked perfectly but lack flavor and the sea scallops were decent. The risotto was ok but the Brussel sprouts were really good. read more

My boyfriend and I did the three course dinner for restaurant week. I was very impressed with the menu that consists with about 3-4 different items for each course. I tried the blackberry martini - get it, it's insane. For the first course we got a crisp wedge salad and crab bisque. I was obsessed with the wedge salad. The dressing was delicious! Second course - I had crab cakes which were the best crab cakes I have had outside of Maryland! They were very meaty with very little filler. I had previously visited for happy hour but this was my first time sitting down to have a meal. I made a reservation on the phone and was excited to try out the food as I had heard great things. Upon arriving, I think I stood at the hostess stand for about 5 minutes after asking the bartender if someone was working the stand. A young lady finally came up and asked how many. We were seated a waitress came by shortly. She was friendly and attentive. The food however was just ok to me. I had the steak frites and fries and the steak was over cooked to me and the fries were too crunchy. The bread and my crème brûlée were the best things I had. The restaurant was relatively quiet but I did go on a Wednesday @ 2:30pm. Try it for yourself but I doubt I will rush back. read more

I like j Gilbert's. We have dined there since it opened. We had a birthday event for my mother which was wonderful. We have enjoyed the food, the service and the ambience. Today we ordered lunch to take out. My wife enjoyed the steak and wedge salad. Very good. The bread was also super. I chose the chicken c and salad. Everything was wonderful except to refer to chicken in the menu there should be more than a few bits of the product. J. Gilberts has always been one of my favorite restaurants whether for lunch dinner or brunch! It's a bit upscale, but yet casual & comfortable. There is a separate, but open bar area which is really great. The food is consistently excellent & comprable to similar steak & seafood houses. Some minor changes over the years - menu was most recent. We were celebrating my birthday & while tough to decide, I opted for the giant shrimp & lump crab dish... it was delicious! Tim B. was our server & he was wonderful! Friendly, pleasant, VERY knowledgeable regardless of questions about the food, changes, or the restaurant itself. There was a minor glitch with my friend's meal & Tim took care of it immediately! Although we were full, and even had leftovers, Tim insisted on bringing out some dessert, on him. Why would I ever switch from the main dining room to the bar. That was the biggest mistake ever. I felt like I was at a totally different restaurant. The waiter that I would have had in the dining room was perfect, he was happy, bubbly, said hello, was all smiles. The waiter in the bar area... what in the world. He didn't say hello, he never came back to the table so I guess he felt my vybe and told his coworker to take over and she was just as bad as him. It was very odd in that bar area. The food... Oysters Rockefeller - delicious Lobster Cobb salad - delicious, although I felt as though some of the items could have been cut smaller but it was really good, and I know I said no bacon but it still came out with bacon. Bone In Ribeye, baked potato, lobster Mac and cheese - this was all the food we ordered but I did not eat this. We sent the Lobster Mac back because what was that and where was the cheese. On the cusp of the 3.5 star experience. My siblings and I wanted to take our parents to celebrate their birthday dinner. We made a reservation a couple days in advance. It was nice they gave us a little private dining area since we had a larger party. When you first walk in it has that traditional steakhouse ambiance. Which I'm surprised they don't offer a wider selection of steaks on their menu. We got fried calamari as a appetizers, a couple of salads and 2 bottles of wine. I had the wedge salad, which was pretty standard. It kind of heavy on the onions. The calamari was delicious though I wished the portion was a little bigger. For entrees I got the bone in rib-eye, with roasted Brussels sprouts, and a baked potato, my wife got the 6oz filet combo with the crab cake, mash potatoes and mushrooms risotto. The rib eye was really tender and flavorful. It was probably the best thing I had there. The Brussels sprout honestly tasted mushy and boiled. The baked potato was pretty dry. My wife's filet was okay, but lacked some flavor. The crab cake, mushroom risotto and mash potatoes were pretty mediocre. My family got other sides like the truffle mushrooms, asparagus, lobster Mac and cheese as well. But nothing really stuck out as impressive besides the rib eye. Service was not bad per se but for a nicer restaurant you would assume they would be a bit more personable and friendly. We had 2 servers and a food runner that helped out our party; like the ambiance, their demeanor it was kind of cold. I am not sure if they are new, but they seemed inexperienced. However, it was nice that they also brought out 2 complimentary desserts for my parents as well. Besides my ribeye, the meal seemed forgettable especially for the amount which you are paying. Would I give this place another try. Maybe...but with so much competition in the area, it is hard to justify. read more

We got lost trying to find this place, very dark complex next to McDonald. I wished the 4 people on host stands were more attentive. We waited for 1 1/2hr to get our food. Came back here for dinner last week, and my experience was even better than I remembered the last time I came. Service was great, and the food all came out quick--everything my friend and I ordered was amazing! The Jumbo Lump Crabcake appetizer came with two crab cakes and were pretty big for an appetizer portion--and very tasty. The Filet Combo, 4 oz. Filet and Seared Sear Scallops were so good!! (Tip: get truffle butter as your steak addition, it's amazing.) For dessert, we got the Carrot Cake--it was delicious and not too sweet, which I prefer. Alcoholic drink portions are generous, and my gin/club soda was the perfect mix. For COVID precautions, I love that there are hand sanitizer all throughout the restaurant, especially right next to each seated table--and they have wipes available too! And of course, everyone is wearing masks. read more

Very cozy, darkly lit restaurant. The food quality is excellent. The portion sizes are smaller than what I think most of us Americans are used to (a side of asparagus is 3-4 stalks), or maybe the huge plates make the portions look smaller than they are. The service is friendly. The food did come out a little slow, and it did seem like it took a little while for empties to be picked up, but, the place was busy (it was a Saturday night) so I can't really fault them. The bar is nice - but they were out of pretty much every speciality drink. My friend tried to order one, they're out of it, tried to order another, out of that, etc etc. Expensive but overall a great spot for an indulgent meal with really high quality food. read more
