Staff was friendly then, and helped out with a good rate when me and my two young daughters were only passing through. Just passing through this time again.. but not a friendly staff person in site. J Resort was a nice experience. It's not often you stay in a hotel in your own town, but we were nicely surprised with the quality of the rooms and the check in staff. We were on the 6th floor and were concerned that it might be kind of noisy (it was during street vibrations), but were happily surprised that it was quiet and very comfortable. The rooms are nice a modern. The one thing I thought was strange was the shower. It was impossible to turn on the shower without getting completely wet. Kind of a weird design flaw. I would totally recommend this to friends needing a place to stay in downtown Reno. Just don't go for the pool (which is a shabby little 1960s pool). read more

Absolutely Outrageous! I Do NOT Recommend J Resort! My stay at this so-called "hotel and casino" was an absolute nightmare because of their ridiculous, poorly designed elevator system. You literally cannot go up without a key -- not even if you're a guest waiting for a delivery! I ordered dinner through DoorDash to my room because I wasn't feeling well and didn't want to go anywhere. But it turned out the delivery driver couldn't use the elevator without a key, and apparently nobody at this hotel has thought about how basic guest services should work. As a result, even though I felt sick, I had to go all the way down to the lobby myself just to get my food. Completely unacceptable. And it gets even worse. The driver told me he asked a security guard for help -- simply to accompany him in the elevator so he could deliver my order -- and the guard flat-out refused! So not only is their system a disaster, but the staff can't even provide basic assistance when it's clearly needed. What kind of "resort" operates like this? Why even allow room deliveries if you make it impossible for drivers to reach the guest? The service is atrocious. I am extremely disappointed and strongly do NOT recommend J Resort to anyone. This kind of treatment and lack of common sense is an embarrassment to any place that claims to offer hospitality. read more

Wanted to try Hanna's Table, a nice coffee shop in the hotel casino. The large billboard just down Arlington Ave. stated: Reno residents receive 25% off each meal at the J. On that basis we obtained a new gaming card from the automated machine, to be sure it was up to date, and sat down at Hanna's table. I ordered Fish and Chips and had a side of fresh fruit. My senior companion ordered the prime rib and it was great. The breading and flavor of the fish and chips were wonderful, crisp and tasty. The fresh fruit was spectacular, large strawberries, large raspberries and large blackberries were included. The best i have ever had in a restaurant. Then the bill came. I showed my gaming card and asked why there was not a 25% discount for local residents. The waitress said we needed a coupon which could be found at the casino cashier's cage. I use a cane and am 83 years old. I was not walking several hundred yards back to get the coupon and then back to the restaurant to present it to the server. No where were there instructions about the need for the 25% coupon, until I got my dining bill. I was discusted and will not return inspite of the great food. read more

I got back to my hotel at 9pm in Reno and they didn't have room service or a restaurant open. The front desk guy just laughed at me. I've never been to a casino resort that didn't have a single restaurant open at 9pm. I had to walk several blocks in 30 degree weather to Jack in the box. Super bummed. read more

I think the J Resort deserves a little more love right now than it's getting. I had a pretty decent stay this last time as they were continuing to remodel itself, so it's a construction site for sure. However, our room experience was pretty good all things considered. Note: due to construction, it's not really a 'resort' yet, with very little amenities inside the actual casino and hotel. I didn't mind this as this was serving purely as a place to crash for the night and work from. We stayed inside the Aspen Tower on the 15th floor and our room was clean and spacious. We had a small sink area with a large fridge and microwave, which was very convenient. Beds were firm although they only provided a thin comforter, so we ended up grabbing the other bed's blanket for additional warmth. The bathroom was fantastic with a shower door although the water pressure and temperature could've been kicked up a bit. What sets the J Resort back a bit is their inconsistency with staff. A few gave me misleading information about their Fitness Center (which is a small one, but is indeed open and located on the 16th floor) and whether it existed, and during our stay, a security alarm was triggered due to the construction but nobody was evacuating except for us... I think they need to up their emergency protocol in case something major actually happens in the future. For it's current price, I think the resort is fine and would be a good place to stay again in the future. read more

Upon purchasing the Sands Regency hotel-casino in 2017, Owner Jacobs Entertainment has rebranded the property as J Resort. With several phases of renovations planned, its first phase (now complete) includes a remodeled casino floor (there is a high-limit area, a non-smoking area, a beautiful lobby area for hotel guests), a new casual restaurant called Hanna's table, a high-end restaurant called J Pauls' Italian Steakhouse, a snack and beverage area called Hanna's Express, a lounge area called Afterglow Lounge, a new year-round accessible pool area, and renovated hotel rooms. There were still remnants of the Sands Regency on the casino floor in March 2023 with its casino chips, rewards card, and roulette table. When we visited in May, they were still renovating the main casino floor's ceiling but there were no more signs of Sands Regency casino chips, rewards card, and gaming tables. With our recent visit in June, the J Resort looks and feels great (clean, sleek, and modern). While I'm sad at losing another legendary casino in Reno, I am excited about the new owners' vision for downtown Reno. I always liked the small casino: the gaming tables always had a friendly feel and The Copa Restaurant had a classic Las Vegas feel with good food. So far, we have been enjoying the renovations at J Resort - both on the casino floor and at their buffet/restaurant. read more

We visit downtown area, mostly for the festivals.. Inside it's very spacious.. The restrooms are really nice and big. I'd be curious to see how the rooms are. "This property isn't a dump anymore"--he said jokingly. I last stayed at this property when it was the Sands Regency. I learned that the property has since rebranded as "The J Resort". The property is undergoing a multi phased renovation; but, it opened March 7, 2023 after a portion of the first phase was completed. (Phase One is scheduled for completion by the end of June 2023.) Here are some notes and impressions: The surface parking lot immediately "in front" and "in back" of the hotel is still fenced off. It is being used as a work and staging area, in support of the renovations taking place on premises. The parking structure is the same structure. But it seems as though they sand blasted and painted the entire building. I don't know if they re-did the electrical and plumbing, but the lighting has certainly been upgraded. I don't know if they installed new elevators or refurbished the existing units; but the elevators I rode in operated smoothly. During my last stay, I used a parking lot "across the street" (Arlington). At that time, it was rough and wasn't clearly identified as casino parking. Now this lot--and another separate lot have been resurfaced and repainted. New lighting, security cameras and perimeter fencing have been installed. There's even some public art. Only a portion of the gaming floor--that portion, which is part of the entry, adjacent to hotel reception desk, has reopened. The only games available are slots. I estimate that 70% of the previous gaming floor is in areas still undergoing renovation. There were two hotel towers. One of the hotel towers has been rehabilitated; the other hotel tower is undergoing renovation. (I read that they plan to build additional hotel towers.) The new style and color palette is modern and classy. It bears no similarity to what was before. The property is still a work on progress. They are still renovating existing hotel rooms; I read that they plan to build additional hotel towers. The restaurants have not opened yet. There is more gaming area to re-open. There is going to be a pool and spa. They even say that ownership is going to develop an entertainment corridor along 4th street. I'll visit again to see the progress. But seeing what has been done already is an indication of a lot of positive change. read more

As far as casinos in reno, it's pretty much what you'd expect. I found it to be cleaner than most. We also ate at the steakhouse. We split a rib eye and mac n cheese. That was actually one of the best steaks I've EVER had. You're gonna pay for it, but it's worth every penny. Service was top-notch, too. Minus one star for the locked out thermostat in the room. The A/C wouldn't cool below 75, and I'm pretty sure it was even warmer. Also, those A/C units are loud. On, off, on, off, all night. Not a good night's rest at all. read more

Crab was so salty neither of us could eat it, the "Sushi bar" hahaha.. spicy tuna roll, and crab roll.. He took one bite and told me to toss it, dont even taste it. We went on a Saturday night. Very disappointing stay. Used the online precheck because they said it was a time saver. When I went to the kiosk to check in it could not find my reservation. Had to wait 20 minutes to check in. The room was not very clean. Several long black hairs in the bathroom, bedside tables not wiped, insides of windows dirty. Went out for the evening, returned about 10:15 and wanted a snack. The 24 hours deli in the hotel closed at 10 due to staffing problems. Went to the front desk to complain. There were 5 people in line to check and no one at the desk. Finally spoke with the night manager who seemed indifferent to my frustration. On the day of checkout I left my keys with the desk clerk about 10:30am. At 9pm that evening I got an email asking if I wanted to take advantage of their online checkout service. I am leaving this Yelp review because the hotel never sent out a follow-up survey. read more

About 3am, a drunk fellow thought our room was his and was displeased at a male voice telling him it was the wrong room. It wasn't overly busy and their promotions are very generous. Bartenders are pleasant, and the serving staff were kind. The rooms were gorgeous. Had a staycation and decided to stay at J's resort. This used to be the old Sands Regency. Jacob's entertainment has done a great job with the reservations. The room still smelled of fresh wood and paint. The faucet knows were weird as they both turned inward to turn on. They have very hot water, which was nice. If I stay there again, I will get a room with a balcony as it would be nice to sit outside but still be in your room. read more

Decided to stay here for a night while our daughter had a party for her birthday at our house. Pleasantly surprised by how nice the J Resort was. We had no expectations so she we checked in the person at the desk was really friendly and helpful. Check-in was a breeze. The whole building has undergone a full redo from its previous life as The Sands. The room was way better than expected. Clean, spacious, and the shower was rather large. My only real problem was the restaurant, Hanna's Table. But that is a separate review. The prices, even though it was during Street Vibrations, were the most reasonable in town. Very annoyed with this so called "resort"! I am staying here for three nights this weekend and room is noisy and right next to the elevator. I Asked to change rooms and was told to keep coming back and checking because they don't keep a list. Also, this is supposed to be a "resort" and they charge an additional $30+ per night "resort fee" this is NOT a resort! Poor service, no mini bar, no safe in the room, no resort features, limited bars and room service. Pool is a 20 minute walk from room (see view from the room). They offer a shuttle service to and from the airport. I arranged for it, but flight was delayed and they couldn't wait 5 minutes from the 4:00pm pick up time . I'm sure it's a nice hotel but the deceptive billing practices are unethical. The $47 special looked perfect when I got off a plane with a head cold, until I hit submit and got charged $132. I called within 3 minutes and said I wanted to reverse the charge, and was told the fees and no cancellation policy was clear "in a dropdown" - which is difficult to spot when you're busy being congratulated for getting a great rate. I will NEVER make the mistake of booking at the J or any of its associated properties again and will not be staying there. Donna, helped me check in and gave awesome recommendations and directions and was delightful to talk with, as she has worked everywhere in Reno in hospitality and had some classic stories. She made me feel right at home here from the start! Pierre and Sylvan are the "French Connection" who were unbelievable in every sense of the word, at the new steakhouse: Sylvan my server, and Pierre showed me some French and we joked about French New Wave cinema while they ran a busy upscale Steak house. Pierre was the best "gerant" in Reno by far and funniest sence of humor! Sylvan knew alot about nightly specials and also took great care in pairing everything I ate with sumptuous wine choices. Brad the "Mod" that night was very invested in making my experience memorable beyond words! Thanks Brad for taking time to introduce yourself and make me feel at home while playing cards on floor!! This was, without a doubt, the most bizarre and insulting experience I have ever had at a restaurant. The situation was simple: My wife, our friend, and I approached the counter together. Our friend was going to eat at the buffet, and since my wife and I had already eaten dinner, we were just going to sit with her and keep her company. In a move that defies all logic, the staff refused to let my wife and me go in with our paying friend. Their justification was a paranoid and offensive assumption: they accused us of intending to steal food. Let me be perfectly clear for anyone reading this: WE HAD ALREADY EATEN. We had zero intention of touching the buffet. To have our character and integrity attacked based on a delusional fantasy from the staff is infuriating. To be accused of a crime simply for trying to sit with a friend is beyond unacceptable. If you are considering this establishment, be warned: the staff may treat you or your friends like criminals based on their own bizarre paranoia.
