If you love Japanese desserts, this place is it. It's a well known confectionary shop located inside Mitsuwa Marketplace. When you walk in, it's at your right. They have a little basket for you to pick and plop your desserts on. I enjoy the red and white bean desserts. With Sakura season here, I opted to try their strawberry cake. Rather than a sponge cake, the cake was more like a cookie. Strawberry was fresh and the cream had the right amount melt in your mouth. Really nice staff and delicious Japanese chocolate and snacks. They package the Royce chocolates with ice packs for you and the Japanese pancakes in a box. They have lots of new products, including fruit jellies from sembikiya and butter press sand cookies, along with classic faves like yoku moku and Royce chocolates. The Azuki (red bean) mochi is 10/10. Not too sweet, and everything you'd expect a red bean mochi to be like (it's accompanied by a whipped cream inside). The raspberry mille-feuille, which I ate second, was sooooooo sweet. The cream was way too sweet. The wafer crunch was fun but I couldn't taste/focus on the raspberry jam bc the whipped cream filling was too sweet. Both were $2.15 each and took about 30 min to defrost completely. I actually ate them a little over an hour later and preferred them not icy/cold at all. Mochi was super soft (about half the size of a small palm). Service was super friendly and professional. Wow, I wish I had tried them sooner! J.sweets is located within the mitsuwa market along with other shops & eateries in there. Parking is a hassle if it's one of those busy days which is almost all the time. So I am not a big fan of mochi maybe because I never really had a good one other than the ones that's prepackage, but I kid you not after trying these I am so pleasantly surprised. Since having them I have been wanting more, but unfortunately it's 3 hrs drive from where I'm at. They have so many selection cream/fillings mochi & also ice cream ones. I was just checking out some new places on Yelp and I came across J. Sweets. They had pretty great reviews and the pictures reminded me of a spot back home. Before coming to San Jose, my friends and I went to a place that sells mochi donuts. And I still had a craving for it. J. Sweets sells mochi donuts so I was all about it. J. Sweets is located inside Mitsuwa Marketplace. As soon as you enter Mitsuwa, it's on your right. They have all kinds of Japanese confectionery in that section. Not sure if J. Sweets is the name of the whole section but the place that I got my mochi from was called Mochicream. They had a display case that showed mochi donuts, mochi ice cream, and stuffed mochi. We waited a while trying to decide what to get and noticed no one was coming to help us. Soon we found a paper checklist. You pretty much fill out this paper of what you want and then go to the cash register. Then they will help you get what you want. I guess if you have a question about their products you would have to ask at the register. We decided on getting the mochi donuts flavored peach, green tea, and strawberry. We also got mochi with filling in them. The flavors that we got for that was custard, green tea, blueberry, strawberry. We decided not to get the mochi ice cream because it was quite cold outside. The cream filled mochi was excellent. We loved all of the ones that we got. Just this alone makes me want to try more and come back. The mochi donuts was disappointing. It wasn't fresh because it was wrapped in an individual wrapper and the clerk pulled it out from some drawer. We ordered too much for us to eat in one sitting so I refrigerated one of the mochi donuts. It was the peach mochi donut. I decided to try it the next morning and it was gross. It didn't taste like mochi at all! It almost tasted like rubber. Overall I would go back for the filled mochi but not the donuts. I'll stick to my favorite place for those. I feel like often times unless your spending a lot of money you get a look from the sales associates like your wasting their time, they have good stuff but honestly I wish the Royce in Valley fair carried the seasonal products as I'd go there instead. The world of mochi is vast! J. Sweets is a corner-counter space inside the Mitsuwa supermarket which specializes in whipped cream-like fillings for their mochi. I enjoy mochi ice cream, but if you're expecting ice cream mochi then don't buy the unwrapped mochi you see taking up the most of the display case. They sell the ice cream ones too, but they are individually wrapped/ pre-packaged. I think they were at the bottom of the case. These were large and just okay. J. Sweets has a good variety of whipped cream filled mochi. They are sold frozen from the display case, but they instruct you to thaw them for 15 minutes before eating. I've always noticed this place shopping at Mitsuwa and finally decided to give it a try. It's a small shop located to the right of the entrance when you first walk in near the fresh produce area. I was surprised to see so many flavors, ranging from your traditional ones to more adventurous flavors. I decided to get the double mango, sakura and raspberry mille-feuille. I was surprised that these actually come frozen - note that 15 minutes is recommended for thawing them. They were pretty good, but different from the mochi I'm used to as they were also filled with creme in the middle (as opposed to the filling just for that flavor). I thought they were pretty good and worth a try, but I personally prefer the manju I get from the shop in SJ Japan Town - the texture and taste is more fresh for around the same price. What I found interesting was that the "wagashi" type Japanese deserts that it carried were exactly same as those that I have been used to buying from K.Minamoto in downtown San Francisco (and I also ran into a K.Minamoto in Westfield Century City Mall in LA). So it looks like J.sweets has somehow managed to get their hands on the same deserts (same supplier perhaps). Anyway, for un-initiated these are the top shelf of Japanese deserts that come with the associated price. Most are between $4-$5 a pop, but they taste great. I avoided my favorite and instead picked up two that looked inviting to me. Sorry don't know the names of these as they are in Japanese (there is a description written next to them in the display case to help you choose). Wow. This is my happy place. I spent an inordinate amount of cash here but I am completely satisfied. I tried: Raspberry Mille feuille - my favorite! Oh my goodness, I had no idea what to expect but this blew my expectations. Sweet crispy wafer like bits embedded into cold cream with a bit of raspberry jam filling. All wrapped in chewy mochi. A delightful combination of flavors and textures Sakura- so good! I've tried quite a few Sakura flavored desserts in my lifetime and very few of them have gotten it right. This was perfect! I bought Sakura, Chocobanana, Darjeeling, Houji Tea, Double Mango, Raspberry Mille-Fuille, Peach Yogurt, Caramel Pudding, Red Bean, Cafe Au Lait, Caramel Machiato, White Chocolate & Green Tea. I would go through how each tastes, but all of them are really good! My faves being the Darjeeling, caramel pudding & raspberry mille-fuille the textures and flavors are amazing! Nothing artificial and have incredible textures. The woman working there was patient and kind, got the flavors correctly and put them into the boxes by order of the list. In my opinion these taste better when they're not completely thawed, the texture gets too soft and mushy. Came by for dessert the other night and got the Green Tea Mochi. These items come frozen so they must be thawed out for ~15 minutes before consumption. They got some kick-a$$ mochi's here! Instead of buying the entire display, I bought 3 to test out for now. 1) Sesame - my childhood fav flav - super yummy, super awsome. 2) Chocolate - who can resist chocolate? Not me. 3) Strawberry shortcake - I thought I was going to regret getting this because I typically don't like strawberry anything. But this turned out to be something I would re-buy because in the center of the mochi was a tiny sliver of pound cake and strawberry jam wrapped around a puff of light cream filling. It was a delightful surprise in my mouth. The service was good, the lady explained to me that I should wait 15 minutes to eat the mochi's. That was fine by me because I actually waited until I got home and ate my first one after 3 hours. Then I refrigerated the other 2 and popped the 2nd one into my mouth the next day and the 3rd one the next next day. Each one I ate was precious and soft on my lips, it was lightly sweetened but yet decadent with the cream filling. These tiny bubbles were like clouds of heaven in my mouth. Stopped by Mochicream over the weekend. There are over 20+ flavors to choose from so I had a difficult time deciding. The staff behind the counter were friendly as they asked if I needed assistance. I ended up purchasing flavors I tried in the past: black sesame, double mango, peach and chocolate banana mochido. I also purchased two flavors I haven't tried before, which were chocolate mint (new), and blueberry yogurt. The chocolate mint was okay. The filling was thicker than the other mochicream's. If you let mochi collide with macarons, then this would be the likely progeny. Jamie W. and I were just finishing up a hearty meal of champon and yakisoba at Ringer Hut down Saratoga Avenue, and I was thinking what harm would there be in perusing the pastel rainbow of mochi here. I admit I was seduced by the photo gallery of silky smooth puffiness that resembled a Benetton ad of baby bottoms. We made our way to the always-busy Mitsuwa Marketplace where our last visit entailed a rich, salty bowl of ramen at Santouka. In the same supermarket bearing right is Mochicream, a becalming little shop at odds with the otherwise chaotic ambiance. The selection in the display case is overwhelming. You're also not limited to the familiar flattened spherical shapes I know very well. They also sell cake rolls, bundt cake-shaped mochi, and of course, the most appetizing, the donut-shaped mochi. I was lured by the $2.50 Cafe Au Lait Donut Mochi, which is shaped like a donut but is pure mochi with a caramel frosting with chunks of white chocolate masquerading as peanuts on top (see photo). We also went for the $2.10 Chocolate Banana Mochi dusted with cocoa (see photo). Even though it looked like something your St. Bernard left on the kitchen floor, it was yummy. We were a bit mixed on the Caramel Cream which we found a bit unwieldy in its gloopiness when we opened it up (see photo). But our favorite turned out to be the $2.10 Blueberry Yogurt Mochi which had a nice refreshing taste (see photo). We could have easily ordered a box of a dozen, but give us some credit for stopping at four. I'm just glad I live too far away from this place to make it an addictive habit. The slender young employee surely can't be eating this stuff with any regularity. Located in Mitsuwa Marketplace, J. Sweets has the best cream filled Mochi straight imported from Japan. Parking here sucks even though it's a private lot, it's ALWAYS packed. Sometimes you'll get lucky and find someone that's leaving but most of the time I end up circling around a few times. There's 22 different flavors of cream filled mochi to choose from and 10 ice cream mochis. The ice cream mochi is just ok IMO... Mikawaya Mochi is better lol. Some of my favorites are the cafe au lait, choco banana, double mango, and peach yogurt. You just check what you want off the sheet and they will pack up everything for you in a box to go. They come frozen so they will last a while if you're driving from afar, but I generally bring a little cooler anyway in case I get stuck in traffic. I'm not much of a Mochi girl. I don't care for Asian decadents because for one most do not contain chocolate and when they do, it isn't sweet. I like my chocolates either dark or super milky sweet. I started to pickup the kiddo from the sitter then called this dude from CL for the baby walker. The guy lived in Santa Clara and told me to come in an hour. I did not want to continue driving to nowheresville nor did I want to trek home. I made the biggest mistake by coming here because traffic was bad. Terrible. I grabbed a parking spot at the Mitsuwa plaza and was excited to have a mini dessert. I don't think I have ever had a Mochi. This place is located on the right when you enter the market. A rather small storefront however, the store was clean and very organized. I just wish they had more than 1 person working the counter. Unfortunately, this chick ordered a million mochis and just by overhearing her annoying high-pitched voice, her order was complicated. I would have left but I traveled and was stuck in 20 minutes traffic so I wasn't going to leave empty handed. I did not want to spend a lot nor do I want to gain 3lbs instantly. Decided to try some mochi donuts out and was disappointed because I thought they were going to taste as good as they looked. Verdict: This place is only pretty but tastewise, it's only okay. Oh Mochicream, how I love thee! This is definitely one of my top places to go to for my sweet tooth fix. Now I know some of you are thinking...mochicream...what's so different from this mochi than the ones you get at a grocery store? Well let me tell you what's different...EVERYTHING! The mochi from here is "gourmet" mochi and has a softer doughy consistency on the outside. The filling is not an ice cream texture; instead it is a very light, soft filling that has a cream center. Most of the mochi have a powdered flavoring on the outside to enhance the flavors. My absolute favorites are: 1. The green tea: I was not overwhelmed with sugar and it definitely had an authentic matcha taste to it. YUM! 2. Sakura: This comes from the cherry blossom so it has light floral undertones. I recently discovered sakura flavors and now this is my favorite one to get from Mochicream 3. Double mango: It even has a mango jelly consistency inside. YUM! Mochi cream is a kiosk inside Mitsuwa with soft, heavenly mochi in a display - averages $2 per mochi and it's completely & utterly breathtaking. The mochi have delicate cream, mille-feuille and other kinds of puree accommodating the mochi. (Cream in the inside/mochi on the outside) It's suits American/western taste while embracing Japanese culinary. Among the varieties of great hybrids, I tried these mochi: -Banana Chocolate .. Must try if it's your first time. The banana is creamed inside the mochi, with small bits of nuts. The mochi itself is covered in cocoa powder. I'm quite impressed and bet it's going to be a signature!! -Raspberry mille-feuille .. Another great one -- Fancy and delicate. There's a crispy base with raspberry and cream inside the mochi. I love french pastries and this brings you to a common level of frou frou combined with texture (the crunch) and taste. As you can see, it's picture perfect too. :) -Green tea ... This is pretty classic. It's green tea/matcha mochi filled with cream. They also had macaroons, cakes and doughnuts. I'll be back to try the whole list of mochi along with other fine desserts.
