They had a long line, but we decided to still wait. The young man working the front was by himself and still taking care of the line fairly quickly. Taking the order, getting payment, and the dessert to us all at the same time was amazing. He needs a raise (didn't catch his name, but he was working on Friday afternoon 4/17). My go to place at Valley Fair mall when I'm craving ice cream but am a lactose intolerant girly. Somisomi actually serves soft serve, but it's super creamy and almost all flavors are lactose free (they will note on the menu which flavors have lactose). I especially love to try all their seasonal flavors. Right now they have their Sakura Berry flavor and it is amazing! More berry than Sakura, so it's not at all perfume-y. I opted to go with daily swirl option which was Oreo swirled with Sakura Berry and it was the best choice. Tasted like chocolate covered strawberry! I love that you get to add free toppings to their soft serve, including either a strawberry or small macaron to finish it off. I went with Oreo crumbs and a macaron for my cup and it was perfect. Sometimes service can get a little slow when it's busy, but it's always worth the wait. I was unfortunately a bit disappointed in our experience at Somisomi. We got two taiyaki, one custard and one black sesame. The black sesame was okay, but the custard one was way too sweet, and did not taste authentic. Located inside Valley Fair, near Ramen Nagi, Uncle Tetsu, and Alamo Drafthouse Cinema area. This spot have always been my go-to since they first open for whenever I craving for a good soft serve. The rotate flavors from time to time, so make sure to check their official Instagram to see which location offer which flavors, my all time favorite is their Milk and Cookies n' Cream. Somisomi's soft serve is creamy and quite strong on milky taste. Their taiyaki (fish shaped waffle) is also very good, it does have a good crunchy texture on the outside, soft and warm on the inside, with the perfect amount of sweetness and nice fragrant smell. So, I do recommend their Ahboong or Upside Down Ahboong for first timer, you cannot goes wrong with their Custard or Nutella filling. But this time, they released a brand new taiyaki's flavor: Dubai Chocolate and it was so good that I came back twice in the same weekend. This flavor was more expensive, I got 2 for almost $10 meanwhile 2 regular taiyakis was for $4.95 but it was worth it in my opinion. My taiyaki came out piping hot, the curnchy kataifi added so much texture to each bite and I was really happy to finish my taiyaki in one sitting. I thought I have to wait for long but there was no one in line during my visit at 6:30PM on a Friday night (shocking), staffs were attentive and quick with making my order, the taiyaki was ready in about 5-7 minutes. This is a great dessert or snack place if you're on the go at the mall. It tends to get busy, so be sure to look for where the actual line starts. As far as the offerings themselves, they all are really good. There is not a flavor that you can go wrong with... But I would be very careful with explaining to them the difference of you wanting Nutella and Oreo. When it comes to Taiyaki, you can't order just one, so you'll choose between 2 or 5 pieces. Last time I was here I got 2 and asked for 1 Nutella and 1 Oreo. The worker told us which was which, when she handed us the individual boxes, but she did not mark it on the box so when we went to find a place to eat it, we unfortunately forgot, which was which. This is a big issue for us as my significant other is allergic to nuts, and Nutella is made out of Hazelnut. I bit into both in the hopes of biting into the first one being Nutella and then knowing for sure that the second would be the Oreo, but I just had a feeling this day and bit into both of them... Which I'm glad I did because they both ended up being Nutella. The soft serve here is also really good. You can get toppings on top of your self serve, and there are three different ways that you can have the soft serve. They do occasionally have swirls here, so pay attention to the mixture for the season. Located on the second floor of Valley Fair mall, this SomiSomi commands a steady flow of customers in the afternoon. They're so busy that they were out of the ube flavor by 2 pm! The orders are taken and delivered quickly with the exception of the taiyaki (fish shaped mochi waffle cakes) filled with delicious flavors (cheese, custard, red bean, Nutella, Oreo, and taro). The taiyaki take about 15 minutes but not bad considering how busy the place can get. The menu is quite simple. Choose your container (cup, fish shaped waffle cone, or cup with the fish shaped waffle cone on top), filling if you have a cone (it's the filling that goes in the cone), flavor (they typically have flavors and mixings of the day but standard typically include matcha, milk, and ube), and finally the toppings (you can choose whichever and however much you want of the dry toppings which include Oreo crumbs, sprinkles, and other cereals). There aren't a whole lot of seating or tables for you to dine at however to the side of SomiSomi where the line meets, there is a small standing table where you can eat your treat before taking off. Otherwise, you may want to bring some napkins with you as you eat on the go. The staff were friendly and patient despite the crowds. The quality of the food was consistent and maintained their temperature quite well. Parking can be a bit hectic but the mall has its own structure that offers the first two hours of parking for free. Simply park, take the escalators to level two, and walk your way towards the theater (turn left after the escalators if you're coming from the south side) and other eateries to find SomiSomi. Overall, SomiSomi does an excellent job with their soft serve and this location, even though it's located in a mall, is just as good as any other SomiSomi I've visited. read more

Very disappointed. At first, she did ask what topping I wanted, and I said "cocoa pebbles." But after that, she just added only that one topping, didn't ask anything else, and immediately handed me the cup. It wasn't even filled properly -- just a small scoop stuck in one corner like in the photo. Normally, the staff would ask if I want to add anything else, and my cup always comes with full toppings like macaron or fruit. I'm not sure if Somi Somi has changed their serving rules, but this time the experience felt rushed and lazy. I have one of the biggest sweet tooths and I absolutely love ice cream. I actually love soft serve ice cream the most and SomiSomi hits all the notes. I first tried it back in LA's Korea Town many years ago and fell in love with it instantly. Now with more locations and shorter lines, it's easier to get. I love the taiyaki aka the fish cone with milk soft serve. There are days I like getting the swirl either with milk, matcha or ube. I do like pretty much almost all of the flavors but my love is with the milk flavor haha.
