My favorite Portland cafe. J is the kindest man, and popular on weekends for a reason! He makes all of the sauces himself, makes his own chai (it's delicious), and crafts every drink with care. He is a talented barista and has yet to make a drink I didn't love. The cafe operates out of a cute airstream, and if you want to stay and sip there's outdoor seating. My family lives in the neighborhood, and walks to J Vein Caffé with my mom for a morning coffee is our favorite tradition. He also makes homemade whipped cream, which he tops the mocha with. However, my favorite thing about coming here is how he's made this a space for the neighborhood- he is so kind and welcoming, knows everyone, knows their coffee order, knows their dog. Wish I could give this more stars! I've never met someone as passionate about coffee as the owner, he was extremely kind and walked me through all the key components of pulling good espresso. He even mentioned how he waits until the right time of day to open the doors of the van so the humid level doesn't affect the beans. The latte was perfect, he asked the sweetness level I wanted too, but he offered to remake it if I didn't like it. On top of everything, he was great to talk to and seemed to know the other customers as regulars. The only warning I have is that there are wasps in the area, as it is in a cute and spacious food truck area, so be careful if you get any meat from the other vendors since they are carnivorous and will buzz around. read more

This is literally my first stop every time I come into Portland for business. The best coffee in the city, the state, and possibly the entire West Coast can be found in this single silver Airstream on Sandy Boulevard in Portland. I've been going to J Vein weekly for four years--which is about two hundred cappuccinos--so what I am about to tell you comes from ample experience. I've seen JJ open his door to rain, snow, sleet, hail, and unseasonably warm weather, all in the service of making a singularly perfect cup of coffee every time. He sources his beans locally, creates his own recipes for every drink he serves, and even whisks his own whipped cream by hand. Even the logo on the cup is hand-drawn by the sole proprietor! And every cup has been showstoppingly perfect. On my first visit, the line was out the food cart park and I almost decided I didn't have time for it--but quality takes time. As soon as I took my first sip, I knew the wait was worth it, and in all four years, JJ has never missed the mark nor spilled a drop of my drink. He knows his work takes time, but he wears it with a smile and is happy to indulge customers in conversation while they wait. He knows all his regulars by name, remembers their drinks, and introduces them to each other when they have shared interests. I've made friends standing in line for J Vein, knowing that we share the same excellent taste in coffee. Sure, other places may be faster, sell more stuff, have cheaper prices drive-thru windows, but nobody--and I mean it, I've been to just about every coffee shop in the city--has a love for the craft of brewing coffee like JJ does, and that love is on full display in every cup. If you have only visited someplace once, you are not in a position to have an informed opinion on it. That could have been a particularly good or a particularly bad day; you have no context. This is a one-man show operated out of an old Airstream tucked away in a Rose City Park food truck pod, and it delivers the best service and coffee in town. I put those two in order because the incredible attention to detail and friendliness of the owner/operator is beyond compare. Or more correctly, it can only be compared to the tremendously high quality of the drinks, which it matches. What makes the coffee great? The Spella beans, the simple syrup (made from demarara sugar), the attention to detail. What makes the service great? JJ remembers your name and order, he offers to correct any issues with your drink, has biscuits for dogs, and umbrellas if there's a wait in the rain. By far the best chai tea latte that I have EVER had! My wife ordered the dark chocolate frappe and said it's also the best drink she's ever had! We will definitely be back before our trip is over specifically for the frappe and fresh hand whipped cream! The owner is very personable and lets you know about all of the syrups that are made in house! You can tell he loves dogs, too. There were many customers who came by with their dogs and the owner immediately lit up and started talking to the dogs and giving them treats! Being a visitor to Portland I found myself in need for a hot chocolate. This place was one of the top places that popped up in search. When I arrived I easily found street parking. The area is a cute little place called Rose City Food Park and had a lot of different food truck vendors. There was only couple and adorable dog Lola ahead of me. I immediately noticed the fun conversation the customers had with the owner. He already knew exactly how to make their coffee, which let me know they were regulars. Of course a place having regulars always gives a good vibe. When it was my turn I ordered a hot chocolate and got excited to find out that he hand makes the whip cream and that I could add some marshmallows as well. He was nice and welcoming with a smile as he made my order. The important part is that the whip cream and the hot chocolate were amazing. I definitely don't doubt my mistake to make a stop here. All the regular customers I noted with their sweet doggos didn't hurt anything either. He even has some dog biscuits for the furry friends. If I have time while I'm still here I'll definitely be giving this place another visit. read more

I moved to Portland after having lived in the Bay Area and Seattle, and I was so disappointed by the lack of quality coffee here. There's *so* much absolutely incredible food in Portland, but it is a coffee desert! iykyk. Thankfully, my partner happened to try J Vein Caffé one day, and brought me back the next. Folks, it's the best coffee not just in Portland, but that I have had anywhere, ever. It's the only place we go anymore. Picture a one-man Italian style espresso shop run out of a kick-ass airstream - in a nice big food cart park that has plenty of parking and lots of seating (!!!) JJ knows everybody's name and order by heart, and there are like a million cute dogs that come by daily for treats and pats. The line moves quick and you're pretty much always guaranteed a fun and interesting chat with JJ. When he's not too busy serving up coffee for all his regulars, we love to stick around and chat. Grab a latte or a shakerato! (The whip is craaaazy!) and if you really want to treat yourself, grab something from Rocket Breakfast also in the park. Perfect morning. read more
