We stumbled onto this place while looking for somewhere to eat. And while it's smack dab in the middle of a very touristy area on a block of strip joints and porn places, and it seems kind of tourist-esque itself, it's not bad. If you sit in the dining room in the back, you can actually have a quiet meal. Which is pleasantly surprising, given how noisy the bar up front is. The atmosphere is cozy, the servers were friendly and the turkey burger was thick and juicy. Even when my turkey burger took a long time coming out, the servers were pretty helpful and nice about seeing what was going on. The downsides: the turkey burger, while delicious, comes with some kind of sauce on it that looks like Russian dressing but is really, really spicy. Almost inedibly so. Just be forewarned if you order it. The section of the bar near the bathroom doesn't smell too hot, and in fact there was a row of three stools right near the bathroom door that were totally unoccupied. On a Friday night at 9:30 p.m. The beer selection seems a bit unadventurous. It didn't bother me since I'm not a beer drinker, but my dining companion was less-than-impressed by the selections. This is the second time I've been to this bar. Bars in midtown may or may not be hell on earth, but I have found myself going to them when there is a Rangers game or when friends are just coming in to Penn Station for a quick visit since it's an easier trip for them. Anyways, we came here on Tuesday night for the women's world cup match. Upstairs, there were a ton of people watching the game. We wanted somewhere to sit so we could grab food, so we sat downstairs. This was great for the first half since a ton of people were watching as well. Unfortunately, however, they turned on the basketball game once the first half was over. I generally would totally understand, but seriously no one was there watching sports besides my party. The bartender was a little sassy but whatever. They also only had two beers on tap which was a bit of a letdown. I guess they're going through construction. The one beer we did get from the tap was essentially water. I know they are going through construction, but I was here back in January as well and had the exact same experience. So I would give this place two stars BUT our waiter was awesome. Honestly we were probably being really annoying but he still provided superb service. They were clearly understaffed but he went to extreme lengths to make sure we were served well and happy, and tried his best to have the bartender play the soccer game. This hood has a dearth of good eats unless you're in the mood for Korean, which B is not a fan of. So we wandered into Demsey's. Our food was solid, our service was not. The good: The redeeming piece of the night was the food and my compliments to the cooks. I started with the soup of the day - cream of mushroom soup which was velvety and earthy and quite a delecious surprise. Given the level of initial service I had lowered my expecations of food quality. I also enjoyed the steak salad which was actually cooked to my requested temperature and rather tasty. What's not to love about a bloody piece of meat with some greens and feta cheese. B had the Irish Chicken, some sort of sauteed chicken breast with an Irish whiskey, mushroom and cream sauce, and was satisfied. Although she stated it could have used some more mushrooms, it was a large portion and she had leftovers. The bad: In a sparsly populated dining room, we were first sat at a tiny two top nearly on top of another dining couple. When asked if we could move to a larger table, we were told no, she had to keep them open for bigger groups. (I completely understand this strategy, but it was nearly 8pm on a Monday night. Did she really think there was going to be a run on tables?!?) Service continued to be haphazard throughout the rest of the meal. I was brought my starter and a basket of rolls with a single knife in a napkin -were my dining partner and I supposed to share the knife and eat off the dirty pub table? Place settings for the table were brought after I was halfway through with my soup and I had to pause mid-sip so that she could put the paper placemat down. Fine dining this was not. I work just a block away from here and have been multiple times for lunch. This is one of my go-to spots for bringing new-hires to lunch. The service can be a little slow sometimes, but nothing worth knocking the rating down for, and they don't pressure you to pay and leave right away. The food is average to above-average consistently, and a good sized portion for decent prices at lunch. I'd give this a 3.5 overall, but decided to round up. read more

My boyfriend is constantly eating here for lunch. He's obsessed with their Guinness beef pie. When I finally had the time to join him for lunch, I must say it is quite good. I stopped in here on a wet Tuesday afternoon for lunch and a pint while doing some Christmas shopping. I've been here 3 or 4 times before and it's always been solid. I had the Irish smoked salmon and a pint of Guinness. The salmon was really good. Unfortunately the bartender didn't know how to pour a Guinness (the head should be creamy with no bubbles and the head should come just above the rim of the glass) My "pint" was a half inch from the top of the glass. I'd go back for the food next time I'll have a bottle of beer. Or maybe they will show the bartender how to pour Guinness. read more

Went here this weekend for a UFC fight with my beau (he's a fan, I'm not). Found this bar online and we decided we would give it a shot. It's an okay bar. There are plenty of televisions and enough space to sit, if you're smart enough to show up before 9. When the main event started (somewhere around 11), the place got packed! We ordered the hummus and the chicken tenders. Both decent and the drinks were poured generously and mixed tenderly. We'll probably find ourselves here again for another fight night. read more

Have you ever eaten right outside of a porta potty? You can if you go to Jack Demsey's! Thought I would try the place for some UFC viewing. That was a mistake. To watch the fights my friend and I had to find a table in an upstairs area about the size of a large hallway, where a crappily framed projection of the fights were played against one wall. I'm also not sure if the place qualifies as a restaurant, because I think those places have servers. After sitting at a table and chairs being help together by duct tape for about 20mins, my friend went to the bar and ordered two burgers and two beers. The beers came about 10 mins later, the burgers about 20 mins after that. The two meals were identical, but they still managed to screw them up. We were never attended to again for the remainder of the night, aside from when the barback took our dishes away. Never a 'would you like another beer?' Never a 'how was everything?' We also had the pleasure of having a table right next to the unisex bathroom in the middle of the hallway, which lent some needed class to the atmosphere of drunk 40 year-olds cheering for Tim Tebow on the other monitors. You can't beat the true IRISH feel. I stumbled upon Jack Dempsey's and will never be the same. From the minute I walked in - I was welcomed with open arms!!!! Mairead and Megan were the waitresses around the bar and just FULL OF LIFE. Jokes and a true NY/Irish feel followed. Sharon was behind the bar and the feisty NY/Irish feel continued!!! Sharon was patient with my beer selections letting me sample different local brews! The "Jack Dempsey Ale" was on point followed by shots of Jameson!!! I tried a few different drafts, "Bass Pale Ale" and "Strongbow" were good but the Jack Dempsey was my go to! I would love to stay at Dempsey's all night! I've been to my share of Irish Pubs and this place is at the bottom of the list. We ordered the calamari appetizer, which was chewy and dry...led me to believe that it was frozen and not fresh. I ordered the chicken pot pie. It was basically a piece of bread on top of mush. It was super salty as well. My father ordered the chicken curry on top of rice. It was soupy and bland with not even a hint of curry. We sent both back and asked for the check. The manager came over and gave us everything for free which was nice of hm. I stayed in New York for 4 months last year and i was a regular in here. It is without a doubt one of my favourite bars in NY. They show all the football from the UK and all the Champions League matches. They have a huge variety of beers and spirits and the bar staff make some brilliant cocktails. I went to Jack Dempsey's (JD's) to watch UFC 113 - Machida vs Shogun 2. I have been searching for the perfect place to watch an MMA event anywhere in the 5 boroughs. Unfortunately I am still searching. Not so much b/c JD's was a bad spot to watch MMA (b/c it not), but JD's is not the PERFECT place to watch an MMA event. Here are the requirements for a perfect place to watch an MMA event: 1. No entrance fee. JD's had no entrance fee, which I thought was great. I hate that $10 entrance fee crap to watch an event. The event in & of itself brings TONS of people so there's no point in charging an extra fee unless the establishment is plain greedy. 2. A fun MMA crowd. JD's had a decent MMA crowd. Most of the people started arriving about 45 minutes before the event. The event is shown on the upstairs section of the bar & hosts only one bathroom for ALL to share. I went w/ a pretty girl (also an MMA fan) & the men seemed pretty respectful of her, which was cool. The crowd was kinda loud, but definitely not rowdy. I would have expected a livelier crowd, but maybe I'm just an MMA fanatic & think everyone should be as excited about it as I am. 3. Great food & service: JD's does NOT have great food. We both had different kinds of burgers & they were "aight." We also had wings & they were also just "aight." We didn't even finish the wings & believe me, my lady friend (a small chic) & I can "throw down" on good buffalo wings. The service was kinda friendly, although when it got crowded during the event, it was hard to find my waitress. Decent prices, I guess, for bar food in a touristy part of NYC. 4. And most importantly, a venue showing an MMA event most have LOTS of screens in order to watch the event closely & comfortably. JD's had enough screens & the layout was decent so as that eveyone can see the fight. I would have preferred more screens. I was mostly glad b/c we arrived early & pretty much had our choice of the prime watching spot. Needless to say I am still searching for the perfect spot to watch an MMA event, but if need be, I would return to JD's to watch PPV madness. Peace!! read more

Jack Demsey's is a cute, convenient bar in the 33rd/34th street area (close to the PATH, subways & shopping.) Three of us last Nov. decided to stop on in and have some food and drinks there. The place was nicely decorated for the holidays, clean and well kept. The best chicken fingers I have ever had, Damn!!!!!!! I used to work at a hotel at the end of the block. This was a daily visit for me and people I work with.
