Update and rating adjustment Friends from out of town wanted to eat here after seeing it. So I thought I would give it another try. Perhaps, I thought, they would do better. The bar was pretty low, after all. After sitting there a while, a young man came by and asked about what drinks we wanted. Five minutes later someone else came by and asked basically all the same things. Problems with the first one? This time I at least got my request in (never was asked the first time). Right after this, someone at the table asked for menus since we hadn't seen any yet. 15 minutes later someone came by with our drinks and asked for our order. Progress. A long wait later (26 minutes actually) the food started coming out. From walking in, to getting food was about 50 minutes. Credit given for the order all being correct. Ah, the food. I can only comment on what I and my wife got. She ordered the Philly cheese steak sandwich, gluten free. What an abomination. The bread was about 2 inches wide. And tough? It was so tough it was inedible. I tried some of the meat. I am at a loss to describe it. It seemed like it was pieces of cubed steak. And flavor? I personally do not like green peppers at all. But this sandwich's flavor wouldn't have been that objectionable as I could barely detect the green peppers. The whole thing was pretty flavorless. I ordered the Swiss mushroom burger. Can't go wrong with a simple burger. So I thought. Again, flavor issues. The bigger problem was the burger. Crunchy on the edges and definitely well-done throughout. No hint of pink. Or of any moisture. I couldn't finish it. Which was a first for me. And then the bill. My wife said that before she saw it she was going to tell me to leave no tip because of the quality of the food and the minimal service we received. But the bill had 18% "gratuity included". That was news to me. I had not noticed this mentioned anywhere. I thought about discussing it but at this point I just wanted to be done with the whole thing and leave. But the most insulting part of the bill was the line for "Additional Tip". What? No chance in hell. I would like the other tip back, please, not give more. So, because of all this, I have changed my rating. It was a 2, but now I am downgrading it to a 1. And I have learned my lesson. Nobody is going to talk me into going here again. read more

Food - 4.4 Service - 4.5 If you pass a shiny diner in Moscow & you're hungry, turn around and pop in for some food at JackJack's Diner. It has that classic diner feel when you walk in. The menu has classic selection of food but we were here for breakfast. My daughter and I both had omelettes: one chili cheese (recommended by our waiter) and the other the farmer's, both are full of flavor and hearty so don't be surprised if you skip lunch. Their chili was a nice balance of bean and meat just wished there was more cheese. The gravy on the farmer's was smooth and not too thick & heavy. The sides of potatoes and toast puts you over into carb overload. Thank goodness my daughter and I decided to walk off the food afterwards. I'll have to make a point to come back to try their lunch or dinner menu next time in town. read more

We were seated immediately. Although we were the first patients of the day, the waitress was warm and cheerful. She took our order with lots of changes from the menu with not a blink. I had read the bad reviews first so expected waiting forever for cold food. Not our experience. The coffee came out immediately followed by the food followed by the homemade malt made with fresh bananas. The only small downside was that the chicken fried steak was so thick that it was pretty chewy. The restaurant itself is so shiny. That shows the level of cleanliness. Bathrooms were clean also. We will be back next time we are in Moscow. Now we need to find the Co-Op everyone is talking about. read more

Four of us took a day trip down to Moscow. After visiting one of favorite stops, the CO-OP, we were ready for some lunch. Decided to try JackJack's Diner. Great iced tea, fresh brewed & well done! Shrimp Basket & Triple Stack, both with sweet potato waffle fries were both decent. But the Meatloaf dinner was pretty darn tasty! Chose the turkey noodle soup, which was chocked full of thick noodles (like frozen Reames?) veggies & turkey in a perfectly seasoned light broth. Had it with mashed potatoes (homemade) covered in country gravy. The meatloaf was a glazed huge slab of moist goodness. Not a huge fan of the glaze, but that was good on the dinner roll. Corn also came with it but I can't eat corn, so, someone else had that. BUT, the shining star was the Stuffed French toast!!! Sweetened cream cheese & raspberry filling sandwiched between two fluffy pieces of lovely French toast. Oh man!!! Very rich but extremely heavenly!!! The young ladies waiting on tables were very friendly too. We all agreed we'd go back next time we're in the area!!! read more

When you go to a diner, you are expecting a certain type of atmosphere and menu and that's exactly what we got. It was pretty packed around dinner time on a Saturday night and you could tell that Love locals came here to have dinner normal diner menus and that's what we got burgers, french fries etc. Everything was fine. The staff is young and that's OK because they need a job but sometimes it's better not to go to the table every five minutes and ask if everything is OK that said I would recommend this place to anybody that wants the type of food that diners serve. read more

Oreo Shake - yummy but charged $0.50 more than the menu said Brisket Burrito Special - $16.00 and mediocre French Dip - $19.00. Cheese and onions only on one half. Meet very extremely dry. Fries were fine. Pancack and Bacon- the chocolate chip pancake was huge but just far too sweet with chocolate drizzle on top. 3 slices of bacon for $5. We are truly disappointed. We like the food, and some of the staff. We head over to the Moscow farmers market on weekends, and usually stop at Jacks for breakfast. Today was the second time we were "overlooked". We sat for about 15 min while everyone around us was arriving and ordering, and we were just ignored. Then it happened again this morning. We went the day after Father's Day and the wait staff said they were out of a lot of items, which is understandable. What I don't understand is the restaurant wasn't busy and it took forever to get our food, it was not hot when it was delivered and we waited forever to get our check and cash out. My friend and i stopped in to check out a new spot to eat after we do our weekly training. We both a good old style diner. We had been discussing eating at places that didnt have great reviews and giving them an honest shot. Well let me tell you, if I could give this place ten stars I would. We ordered two things that in our opinion make or break a spot. He ordered the vandal burger without the 1000 island. A choice he would regret with an order of onion rings. Myself I got a Ruben with fries. The fries were perfectly crispy on the outside and had a fluffy texture inside. A perfect frie if I have ever seen one, the onion rings were just as good. Crispy golden exterior with a perfectly cooked onion. The flavor of the batter and the onion perfectly blended together. My sandwich was constructed with care, not overly covered with any one ingredient. I asked for more 1000 island because I like mine with a little extra sauce (it was also to make my friend have the vandal the right way). The Vandal burger was put together like art. A soft flavorful bun, the burger was cooked perfectly. You could taste the individual flavors of everything on it. Trying it with the 1000 island dressing pushed it from a good burger to a damn near perfect experience. My friend commented that he should have eaten it the way it came as the 1000 island really brought the burger together. After talking to the owner and telling him how impressive the food was and him revealing that almost everything is made in house and that they hand blend the milkshakes and malts it sealed the deal for us and made this diner not just a drop in once establishment but a cornerstone of our weekly traditions. We will definitely return and bring more customers to the tables. read more

Ordered the "Steak and Eggs". When it arrived the steak was so tough but I just chalked it up to having to cut it with a butter knife that I was given, NOPE! That was not the case, when I had told her about this issue of the steak being tough the response that I got from the kitchen was "They don't marinate or tenderize their steaks". You probably should if you are going to be charging 30 dollars for a cut of chuck steak (which is one of the three tougher cuts of meat from a cow). As a cook I know my cuts of meat. After the discount off my meal, I ended up paying 23 dollars for eggs, toast, and hash browns. I of course did not eat that meat. read more

The food is absolutely delicious .It comes In Large portions and is very filling .My favorite item is the diner potatoes and chocolate milkshake I highly recommend. The servers are very friendly and are more then happy to help you out. Every inch of the restaurant is a throwback to the fifties from the menus to the bathroom. The food is excellent and so is the service! We were seated right after walking in the door and given menus and waters as soon as we sat down. Our drink order was taken right away and then our food order as soon as our drinks were set on the table. We had our food 10-15 minutes after ordering. My sandwich came with the wrong side, but just as the waitress was saying "I'll fix that" another server came up with a plate of the sweet potato fries I ordered. The kitchen caught the mistake themselves and had already fixed it. Yay! The portions were generous. The french dip was piled high with roast beef, provolone cheese, and caramelized onions. The burger was good, and so were the fish and chips. The onion rings, sweet potato fries, and french fries were all hot and crispy. The only downside to making this a regular stop are the prices. Please note that the prices listed as of today on Yelp! and moscowdiner.com are not accurate, nor are the menus pictured in the reviews. We came for two things and they had neither one. Meatloaf and cinnamon rolls. Not the first time they have been out of meatloaf. They may also have been out of cooks since it took 45 minutes to get our burgers and salads. Wait staff was lackadaisical and generally inattentive. Meat was overdone in the sandwiches and the fries and onion rings were way too done. This used to be one of our goto places, No more. read more

The biggest issue with this place is consistency. The quality of the food and service is NEVER the same. Three weeks ago, I went and had the best biscuits and gravy I have ever had. Delicious with a hint of spice. The server was polite and attentive. My daughter's food was also great. I went back two weeks ago, and the biscuits and gravy were good, but not great. Didn't taste the same. Gravy lacked the spice. Service was average. I went back today, and the biscuits and gravy were awful. Giant chunks of sausage that may have been undercooked and runny gravy. If I could give 0 stars, I would. We stood at the door for 10 minutes, not a single server acknowledged us, 4 tables were open & had been cleaned. Upon asking if we could sit down at one of 4 tables open, one of the young girls was quite rude to my friend telling us we had a 5 to 10 minute wait. We were polite, yet met with indifference and rudeness. The 4 ladies behind us understood how we were treated and the 7 of us promptly left. We are in the Moscow area often and I will continue to share with people I meet to Never patronize this horribly run place. The 3 young girls need some guidance. The place we found to have breakfast after our Jack Jack experience was more than happy to seat the 3 of us and take our $80 order. They were pleasant, appreciative and efficient, unlike Jack Jacks. The General Manager of this place should hire people who care about their job. I think the girls "working" there reflect poor training, which goes right back to the owner and management. Ok. There's a few things I feel compelled to note. +1 for clean tables. (Hard to find these days) +1 for clean place +2 for a quick seating of 7 +5 for the service. Now for the meh! -5 for the food. I love a good "greasy spoon" diner and I eat a lot of breakfasts (Weekly) at local diners. Cold food is NEVER good. (Except when appropriate) Biscuits and (sausage) gravy should have chunks of sausage, thick gravy and a bit of spice to make it official. I experienced the exact opposite. "Home" potatoes are terrible anywhere, but somehow worse here. (Cold) lose them and switch to hash-browns. The bacon, which I always love, actually has no taste. I checked. And rechecked and ate it all at once to see if my taste buds were malfunctioning...odd. One last thing. Since I'm being petty. Pancakes aka "Hotcakes" are called that because they are supposed to be "hot" When the pancake falls apart or "splits in two" it's because it was over (or under) cooked. One more last thing. NEVER, EVER, EVER..serve COLD SYRUP! Please take this as a constructive criticism from someone who eats out a lot and tends to notice ways to improve. ( IMO) Not a list of grievances. Pretty much average diner fare at a pretty steep price. I had a Buffalo Chicken sandwich and the others shared a Gobbler sandwich. Mine was basically a chicken strip dunked in Franks and thrown on a hoagie with a slice of tomato and lettuce. Nothing that made it unique that would justify the asking price. My wife and daughter both agreed the Gobbler was just ok. Nothing to complain about but nothing that made them say, wow that was good. Two of us shared a strawberry shake that was actually very good. It is worth every penny. It was the highlight of the meal. Otherwise the place is clean and the staff were friendly, just nothing to write home about. read more

This diner has a reputation for slow service but this case is exceptionally bad. Wish I could talk about the quality of the food after the long wait, but after waiting over a half an hour despite a minimally uncrowded restaurant, we weren't even asked for our order. My fiancé and I sat for over half an hour after we had been given our initial waters and the server had asked for what additional drinks we had asked for (which never were delivered). In the meantime 3 additional tables were given their drinks, all with accommodations, while we sat there wondering where our drinks were and watching our server walking past and ignoring us. One of the tables (an 8 top) who had arrived after us both ordered and received not only their drinks but also had their food orders placed prior to the server even glancing at our table. 30 minutes in and two tables served, all we had was water and not even the one diet soda we requested. The manager/owner was nice and offered our party free milkshakes as we were leaving, will try again but weren't very happy with how things went. read more

Cute old time dinner. Busy little place, but it is Sunday. Since I was by myself, I chose to sit at the counter ( did not want to take a booth or table). Wait staff was right on getting my drink (water), while I looked over the menu. Basic diner food, sandwiches, burgers, breakfast, soups and salads. I went with the bacon blue burger, well done, with onion rings. Other options for sides are salad or fries. Decided on the onion rings based off other pictures on Yelp. Took about 10 mins for my food to come out. I thought it was going to be like every other black and bleu burger I have had with crumbled cheese. I guess with food prices so high, using blue cheese dressing is more cost effective. It was good but it was messy. The onion rings were good, hot and crispy, not oily. The temp for the fryer was just right. After my meal I ordered an Oreo milkshake to go. It was nice and creamy, perfect size Oreo bits, not crunchy were you can't suck it through a straw. Diner was clean and well taken care of. Service was great, very attentive. Over all this is a good place to eat if your in town. read more

I may be a bit biased because we came here at 11:30am on a Sunday in search of breakfast/brunch food, and only ended up here after other places were too busy. It turns out, they don't serve breakfast at that time, and the wait was awful anyway. The prices are too high for how low quality the fried and greasy food is, as everything was just below average. Also, the table of 3 next to our table of 2 was there and had ordered long before us but didn't get served their food until after we did. I don't know why it seems there are no good diners in the inland Northwest, but if you're like me and you're just in search of a simple hometown diner, just skip this place. My boyfriend and I were looking for some breakfast/ diner food for a good price this morning and settled on Varsity Diner. I was excited, but he was reserved since he wasn't impressed the last time he ate there. However, I'm an optimist and like to hope for the best. I like looking at menus before I go out to make sure restaurants have what I like. Do not go here if you want breakfast past 11 AM. We showed up a bit before 12 PM and discovered that it was a different menu from what was online. Selected breakfast items aren't served past 11, which is normal but they show a different menu that states breakfast is all day, but only certain foods and omelettes. We were a bit disappointed since we wanted French toast and pancakes. However, we found two omelettes to eat: the farmers for me and another omelette for him (we can't remember the name- whoops!). To start, my boyfriend wanted coffee and our server forgot about it and it wasn't until we got our food that he got his coffee. Our server was difficult to track down because she was talking with other patrons and gossiping about a woman who was sign waiving outside the diner. I found it incredibly disrespectful because our server was making fun of the woman sign waiving with other customers and an inappropriate volume. When we finally got our food (maybe 15 min later), my order had cheese in it. Normally this would be quite all right, but I get extremely nauseous when eating cheese and eggs. I had eaten about half the omelette before I realized the cheese was there. The food was all right, did not find it the best or the worst, but I felt that it wasn't up to par with diner foods. Regarding the cheese mishap, we alerted our server that there was cheese in my order. She checked on her end that she wrote down my request, then spoke with the cooks. Our server then proceeded to state that the cooks didn't realize I wanted it without cheese until "they had made the order so he scraped off as much cheese as they could". Umm... what? What if I had a dairy allergy and could not eat cheese? Normally, if you realize the mistake, you would make another order and apologize for the wait. Not cool. The server offering to remake the food, but at that point I wasn't feeling too great. She gave a bit of a discount (their senior discount) on our meal, which was nice. My family and I went there for breakfast this morning. We had to wait for our food for over an hour and the server only comes back to tell us that our order was not put in. When we got our food it was the wrong order and then comes back again to let us know that one of our order is no longer available and it did not end there. We saw this diner from the street and it was like "woah, what's that"? Of course every time we drive by it was packed which made me want to try it all the more. Got in there this morning before 8:00 and there were only a few tables filled- this is during an event weekend. All points were hit here, diner coffee which was weaker than typical and I was wondering if I'd know it was coffee if I didn't know I ordered coffee. Portions are large, biscuits and gravy on the menu and chicken fried steak too which I love to see, Smuckers jam packets on the table. The hash browns were cubed and fried so they tasted exactly like diner French fries. Biscuits were a little crispy outside yum, soft inside, soft but not quite fluffy in there but I'm not complaining at all- very nice diner biscuit. I ordered an over-easy egg on the side. Less one star Bc for the small amount of tables filled, it took slightly longer than I'd guess to take the order and cook the food and also, the coffee whick is SO important was weak and tasted slightly off. I loved the look of the place inside and out, that really does impact the experience. The food was top level diner fare except for the coffee and it's personal choice but the non-traditional French fries weren't my thing. I liked the bathroom and I liked the Diner personalities of the staff. A class above a greasy diner here, this is a quality place. read more
