We saw this diner from the street and it was like "woah, what's that"? Of course every time we drive by it was packed which made me want to try it all the more. Got in there this morning before 8:00 and there were only a few tables filled- this is during an event weekend. All points were hit here, diner coffee which was weaker than typical and I was wondering if I'd know it was coffee if I didn't know I ordered coffee. Portions are large, biscuits and gravy on the menu and chicken fried steak too which I love to see, Smuckers jam packets on the table. The hash browns were cubed and fried so they tasted exactly like diner French fries. Biscuits were a little crispy outside yum, soft inside, soft but not quite fluffy in there but I'm not complaining at all- very nice diner biscuit. I ordered an over-easy egg on the side. Less one star Bc for the small amount of tables filled, it took slightly longer than I'd guess to take the order and cook the food and also, the coffee whick is SO important was weak and tasted slightly off. I loved the look of the place inside and out, that really does impact the experience. The food was top level diner fare except for the coffee and it's personal choice but the non-traditional French fries weren't my thing. I liked the bathroom and I liked the Diner personalities of the staff. A class above a greasy diner here, this is a quality place. read more

When we got our food it was the wrong order and then comes back again to let us know that one of our order is no longer available and it did not end there. A classic looking diner down to a T. Chrome outside siding and all. We came in on a Sunday around 10am. Parking is a challenge as this place is right on the corner of a busy intersection. I suggest finding a street parking lot or spot a block or two away if it is really busy and just walk over. So things were very loud and a little frantic when we got in as there was a large crowd that came in just before us. We were sat pretty fast and greeted by a friendly waitress. Our orders were taken quickly and we got our drinks pretty fast. The coffee is sub par, unfortunately. However, I do not always expect the greatest coffee when going into a diner. You can see a small bar sitting area upon entering, as well as an open kitchen for those working on your food. The hubby ordered 'the stack' which is biscuits topped with hash browns, topped with meat and then an egg. This dish was pretty tasty and I would recommend it. I had the chicken fried steak with potatoes (their hash browns are like potato chips). This is a huge portion of food, I could barely get through half of it. But it was very tasty with the white sausage gravy. Fair prices, service was quick despite super busy. This is the type of place you can go to get a really great hang over dish, as well as classic diner dishes. It helps it's only a few blocks from the University of Idaho. read more

After about a 45 minute wait for food the waitress asks us if anyone has taken our order, yes the same one that took our order. This is after I walked over and asked her about it while she helped another table. After telling her we already ordered from her she just lied that it was in. Over an hour wait for two simple meals at a diner is not acceptable. The only thing that came quickly was our bill upon completion. We had water with breakfast and never had one person ask if we needed anything during the wait. The table two over from us had come in well after us and had finished their breakfast prior to us even getting ours. Four other tables that sat down after us were served before us. So I am driving along and thinking...I am a little hungry. What should appear but an old fashioned diner in a college town no less. This HAD to be good. I was WRONG. I ordered the steak sandwich special. It was flavorless and overcooked. Not that it was tough but all the meat flavor had all been cooked put. The fries were tasteless and the soda flat. A friend and I have seen this place pop up and were wondering, how this place was doing. We saw they had a small grand opening and the closed for a few months and opened back up. So we were very wary about trying the food. But as there are not many places int he Moscow-Pullman area, I said why not and I should probably try it to give it a review. So here it is... I will begin with the venue. The venue is great and matches the diner feel. the aesthetics and furniture of the place makes me feel like I am at an old-fashioned diner. So they got the as aesthetics and environment down. As for the service, it was average. Nothing out of the ordinary. I will say that we came when it was not busy and for some reason, the service was slow. So I was slightly unhappy that it took some time to get our servers attention for condiments. Now for the food. Absolutely disappointing. The food presentation was unappetizing and it did not taste very fresh. The milkshake was fairly watery. Honestly, I had low expectations and this place met my low expectations. So I was not surprised. Wow...can I give zero stars? Went to The Diner for lunch today and while admittedly busy, we (4 people) were sat right away. That's where the good ends. We sat for 20 minutes unnoticed by anyone. Finally we called a server over to take our order. I ordered a roast beef sandwich and was told they were out of roast beef. So, two chilli dogs were ordered, another cup of chilli and two salads...simple enough, two hot dogs, some chilli and a couple salads. After AN HOUR AND 15 MINUTES we were still waiting. I went to the front where I found all floor staff laughing and standing in front of the kitchen window. I told them we had been waiting for more than an hour. This was met with "yes, we are very backed up. What would you like me to do about it?". At which time I walked back to the table and was followed by an employee saying over and over "what do you want me to do about it?" Then followed by..."oh, and I need to tell you, we're out of chili"...this an hour and 15 minutes after our order. Needless to say. We were done and found somewhere else to eat. Went to Varsity for breakfast. Their breakfast menu is very limited, very limited. I settled on the steak and eggs, scrambled with a side of fruit. Now I know why their menu has so few choices, if you have a large selection then you need to have a cook, who knows how to cook. The eggs were cooked desert style... inedibly dry. The steak was cooked properly, nice and pink, which had me excited as to the possibilities. I had 2 bites and they were OK. Not great, but OK. Then I made a mistake, I continued to eat the steak. Next bite became tougher and mealy. Gross, but I had to spit it into my napkin. Next bite worse. I gave up at that point. I cut it into pieces and asked for box, maybe my dogs would enjoy it. The eggs I just left. More on the steaks fate later. The fruit was excellent, but small portion - fresh with a good mix. Back to my dogs. I presented them with the steak; one would not even consider eating it...the other considered it, hesitated and then ate about half of it, deciding the rest was not worth the effort to chew and swallow. Small town locally owned restaurant are my absolute favorite. After a full day of traveling and arriving in a cold windy town this little gem was exactly what was needed. The restaurant theme is a diner style that grabs your attention giving a cozy feeling. We were promptly seated, drink order was taken and had our drinks within a few minutes of sitting down. The menu has all the great diner style food making it hard to decide which option to choose. The kids got burgers and fries and I got a hot turkey sandwich with mashed potatoes. I ordered the mini corn dog basket, side salad, soup of the day, and piece of pie to go. Half the corndogs were burned to a crisp. Side salad had no dressing with the order. Very delicious burgers, fries ok, but the vanilla milkshake is outstanding. I checked out Varsity Diner this week. Reviews seem mixed on Yelp and from friends, so the best way to decide is to visit. Upon walking in, you can't help but feel like you're transported back to the 1950s. The decor, booths and cleanliness are all reminiscent of that era. The menu boasts diner fare: breakfast, sandwiches, burgers and other specialities like open face beef and turkey sandwiches and meatloaf. There are also plenty of dessert options. We were promptly greeted by Jan. She hustles! She was friendly and answered questions about a couple of menu items. I decided on the open face turkey sandwich. It comes with a hearty helping of turkey, gravy and your choice of potato. For $9.95, it was pretty tasty. Instead of my usual soda, I opted for a chocolate milkshake. This definitely hit the spot. It was served in a tall glass, with the extra given to me in an iced cold tin cup. The food and service is good. People around us appeared happy with their choices, too. Oh my gosh, this was good. Came here with my sister and Mom. Mom got the chef salad and my sister and I each got the chili burger sans onions. It was really good. The chili had a nice bite to it without being spicy and hot. Even my mother who has chemo tongue was able to have a bite without it killing her. There are nice, large chunks of tomato. I'm not one for chunks but they're easy to avoid. We both liked the chili. They also gave a lot of fries, more than I could eat!! You do have to ask for the ketchup cause they bring it out of a fridge so it's nice and cold! Of the chef's salad, Mom said that it was the best she'd ever had. It had real ham that had been grilled, and real turkey- no deli meat here. And of course, they have Diet Coke, which is always a huge plus for me. 10/10 would definitely come back and if I were local, I'd be a happy regular. But I love 600+ miles away so I probably won't be back anytime soon. My sister who lives here, however, will. So, 3 meals, 3 drinks and our total came to $43.84 after taxes. read more

I have eaten at this restaurant quite a few times since moving up here and recently it's gone down hill. My 75 year old friend and I went to dinner tonight and I was absolutely appalled when they brought us his food. Both of us have worked in food service for years. He was once a manager of a Sambos. There is a certain amount of service that is to be expected in the food industry. One being that you never serve a Customer unbeatable food. His Cod was well over cooked. The supposed cause of this is a new type of fryer oil. Now I've had to deal with this type of problem before and there is no reason why you would ever offer the Customer food that looks like this. If there is a problem you fix it before it reaches the table. The staff handled the situation as best they could considering most of them were collage students who don't have much experience in the work force. They did not make us pay for his meal. However we will not be back. This was not the first time we have experienced disappointment here but it will be the last. I believe a lot of the problem is that the staff do not take Pride in there job. After all why would they when they don't get paid enough and it's not what they plan on doing the rest of there lives. A good restaurant takes care of it's employees and takes pride in its products and service. The Diner needs a renewed sense of that pride if it plans on making it to the future. read more

The food was ok. I have tried breakfast and lunch here. I didn't try much for breakfast but it was still exceptional. I tried lunch and had a burger and onion rings. The burger tasted awfully "dark" and salty, as if they hadn't cleaned the griddle before cooking it. Flavor would have been better if that had been taken care of. Cute little diner that's great for kids. Our kids got will stix and goldfish to keep them entertained before lunch came. The interior is old school and really fun. I will probably come back again to see how they have improved since their opening day. However, the first time I came here, it was evident that they were experiencing some growing pains and I only came here for dessert and coffee. The staff was a bit sloppy in taking our orders and bringing our orders. One of us ordered a root beer float and, although having the foam overflow from the top of the cup makes for a very picturesque shot of the drink, seeing the waitress struggle with the drink overflowing onto her hands and making a mess on the table was not a great delivery...Maybe letting it settle before they bring it over could fix that. As for the dessert, it was decent cheesecake, but nothing special that distinguished them from a school fundraiser cheesecake.Their coffee was pretty good. I'm sure they have much better food. The seating is very crammed. We were sitting near another group that was in an enclosed area near the kitchen. In order for them to get into that area, they had to awkwardly pass through a tiny opening and it wasn't large enough for them. The constant bumping and tushies gliding over our table was not great at all. This definitely soured my experience at the restaurant. I get that they are trying to have a diner experience with loud conversations and cozy seating, but the layout of the dinner was chaos. I get that having more tables means more patrons which means more money. But if the staff is still under training, adding more tables should be done later. Tables should not be so crammed into crevices that are uncomfortable for patrons. I do love that there is a diner like this in the Palouse and the vibe is very cool. I'm looking forward to the future when they are out of their growing pains as a new restaurant. :) read more

My husband, daughter and I were traveling through Moscow and stopped in for lunch. We were seated and our order was taken and we waited at least 45 min for our food. The cooks would put the food out but the waitresses left plates for at least 10 min or more and acted like they didn't even see them before delivering them to tables. My husband was sitting facing the kitchen and couldn't believe how long they would let food sit. Definitely would not be stopping there again. read more
