DO NOT USE THIS SHOP! I have never posted a review about a business before, but after my recent experience, I felt the need to warn the public. I came in for a water pump replacement. I had driven the car for several months with the check engine light on, the car ran fine. I just decided it was time to get the light taken care of. Paul fixed it and several other items he said needed to be replaced. I paid $1,600 and drove away only to overheat the engine. After returning 4 times for the same problem, Paul told me that since I overheated the engine, I caused the head gasket to be blown and it would cost me $2,600 to have that repaired. I explained that the car ran fine without overheating before they touched it. He refused to fix the engine. I do believe them to be honest. However, they're just not very good at what they do. I have been a long-time customer and over the last few years, they would break something small during the repair process, for example, the left turn flashing dashboard indicator ( while they were working on the air conditioner). It really didn't bother me much since the car was 15 years old with 250,000 miles, I really didn't care much about the car's appearance. I would sue them, but I don't want to go through the process. In addition, the prices are not that much cheaper than the dealer's. I hope you find a good repair shop. read more

He helped out with my air conditioning over the course of multiple visits, and didn't charge more each time as he hadn't figured it out yet. T'was the day after Christmas when I was desperately looking for a mechanic to check out my car because it suddenly in need of some TLC. Thankfully, based on the others' reviews I stopped into J's. Pleasantly surprised by their thoroughness and willingness to quickly take a look. They seemed to be pretty up front with the cost of the parts that they shopped around for. Overall, I'm a new fan of J's! The owner wasn't in the day I had my car serviced. Apparently, he takes great pride in the work that they do. read more

Dealer said my Lexus needed a brake job, so I brought it in to Jack's for a better price. Instead, I got a list of recommended repairs (from steering to axle to struts) with a $5,500 work estimate. Since blue book was only $5,000 on the car, I declined everything but the brake job. When I came to pick it up, Manager Paul could not find any work order or paperwork and his memory on work done was pretty shaky. I've been using Jack's for nearly 20 years, and this was the first time I felt the repair suggestions were dishonest and the work done was unreliable. In fact, after the brake job I took the car back to the Lexus Dealer and everything checked out fine -- no new repair recommendations at all. Jack seems to have retired from duty or sold the shop altogether. Paul, the man now in charge, gives you lots of double talk and breath-taking estimates. Sad to say, it has come time to stay away. Jack's is closed and the new guy does not deserve your business. read more

My clutch went out & I chose to be towed to a highly recommended shop just up the block from Jack's, however, when I got there, I was told "we don't do clutches" aka, not a real auto shop. So my tow truck driver said "I'll take you somewhere better" & he towed my car to Jack's. Immediately, I was greeted, listened to, treated with respect (not often the case as a female at an auto shop). Paul called his regular suppliers & found their prices to be high, so he took the time to call the manufacturer & got the parts for less. Can you love an automotive repair shop? Cause I do. Today was just one more time where my car failed me and Jack's came through. I stopped by because my car was having troubling starting. I thought it was the battery, but a quick diagnosis determined I needed a new starter. An hour or so later I was driving off with my new starter installed and my car back in working order. I've been bringing cars here for over 15 years for a variety of reasons - brakes, alternator, starter, transmission, you name it. And whether it's been Jack or Paul or any of the other guys, I've gotten nothing short of great, honest, efficient service. I recently drove all the way to chatsworth from mar vista to get my oil changed with my regular mechanic after the experience I had at jack's automotive, where I had my oil changed a few months back. my husband brought his car in for some work and, being new in the neighborhood, I asked him to get a quote for an oil change for my car. after giving jack the year, make and model of my car, jack quoted my husband $40 for an oil change. when I got my oil changed a few days later, not only did he tell me I needed a new battery, which I, of course, told him to go ahead and replace, he also charged me $79.99 for my oil change. double what he quoted my husband... because I didn't ask jack himself how much it would be (my mistake) and just assumed the price he gave my husband would be the price I'd pay, I didn't say anything BUT I WILL NEVER GIVE THEM ANOTHER PENNY!!! if you're a Caucasian male, you'll probably get great service there. WOMEN BEWARE. if I could give them zero stars, I totally would. read more

Not only have they fixed some tricky things, but they've comped some small stuff along the way, and if anything was delayed, they've been very apologetic, and also offered to get my car back together so I can drive it while they were waiting for parts, or working out a good time to work on it. Their work has been reasonable and I haven't felt pressure or upselling. Sometimes they are busy, but they've been straightforward about that when I've called ahead. It's better than just popping in at random, and that's true of any shop. read more

Jack put the wrong fluids in my car and now I am without transportation. Jack took 6 weeks to replace a radiator and do minor engine work. He had given a great price, but upon pick up said the engine was "running rough" yet he had warrantied it for a year. Then, 500 miles later (two weeks), the engine light was on and half the engine inoperable. The vehicle was brought back in, he held it for over a week, and did not remedy the situation. He claimed he didn't touch the engine, even though on paper it said he did. He told me that whatever it was, was not due to his work. He told me to get a second opinion and gave me no paper work upon my second pickup. The Professionals at the dealership pointed out that Jack put the wrong fluids in the car and that it was harmful to its working operations. Even I know to look up what to put into something, its not hard, its called research and verification. Jack is not a professional. He may seem to be a nice flexible man with a great deal, but he obviously is not a good mechanic. Believe what others say. But if you want quality spend the extra dollar for your transportation is your livelihood. Be safe, be smart. read more

We have been taking our cars to Jack for years. First time was because he was he was nearby. But once we found out he was honest, sharp, came in on budget, and on time we were customers for life. We even kept going when he moved his location. He doesn't try to upsell or tack on services that we dont need. Seems to shoot straight. They wanted to charge me almost 3 times the amount I was quoted elsewhere and with a straight face I might add. The whole right side of my car was pretty smashed. He had it done and looking perfect in 1 week to the day. And on the exact day he said it would be done it was. Sadly just like everyone i use to come here when jack ran it... as below others mentioned he spent years building a good reputation only to have the new owners take on too much business and not be able to do the work... i took my car in twice and left it there for a few days. and nothing got fixed if you cant do it because you are too busy then say so.... but they dont want to turn away business... also when i did get it back it had a whirring sound it didnt have before.. so i had to take it back in and leave it another 6 hours...and $150 later yet it never had that issue before.. I love this place. I recently was burned at another mechanic and Jack has fixed all of their mistakes. He's really honest and will give you the cheap option and the right option (if you ask). December 23rd, my car started stalling. I brought it in and they fixed it by the next day. Jack wasn't there so they didn't know what to charge me, so they let me take my car and told me to follow up with Jack the next week. It was funny because I had to track him down to pay him, but I was so happy I was able to visit my family for christmas. highly recommended! read more

I took my car to Jacks for years his price went up so I decided to try another mechanic and found out Jack never changed anything on my car. All parts he said he replaced all still have the green mark from GMC and now I have to spend thousands in what jack SAID he had done. Never going there again! read more

Do NOT bring you car here. All of the one-star reviews are spot-on accurate. Jack is no longer here; Paul seems to be the guy in charge (but he'll let you believe he's Jack). I paid Paul to fix my car but the problem was back the next day -- and I discovered a new problem that hadn't existed before. Paul took zero responsibility, and made no effort to repair his previous "work." Reading the reviews, I see I'm not the only one who's had this experience. I didn't do my due diligence, unfortunately, because Jack was highly recommended by a friend. Learn from my mistake; run far away from this place. If you have old or newer cars, Jack's is the place to go. He is straightforward, understanding, and doesn't talk down to women. His prices are reasonable for the work, and when the first repair that I had him do (replace head gasket) cost over $1000, he gave me a "VIP" card for 15% off that work and all future work. Just be prepared that he is very busy all the time and might not be able to get to your car immediately. So if you can leave your car there for a few days, then that is better. read more

After a long nightmare of receiving bad advice from various auto repair shops, I'm so glad I finally found Jack's! My engine had to be completely rebuilt and it was a hard decision to make. Do you scrap the car you still are making payments on or make a down payment on a new car, which is ultimately far more costly? Jack's helped me make this decision with fair and honest advice. I opted to have them rebuild the engine on my Hyundai Sante Fe. Just got her back today and she's like new! Not only did they wash her for me, but they also gave me a floor mat to cover up a ghastly hole on the driver's side. Additionally, Linda of Jack's offered to call me every quarter to remind me to come in for an oil change and maintenance. I had had my car worked on once before at Jack's and I was pleased with the service. I just went back through recently after having my engine replaced by a different mechanic. The check engine light had come on and I wanted to take my car to a reliable mechanic who would get things right. Paul helped me out and immediately pointed out things under the hood that weren't done right in the installation. It was refreshing to hear someone who is obviously knowledgeable and confident in pointing out what is wrong. Jack is great! I bought a used 1998 car which had been rebuilt (so the former owner says). Lot's of little things seem to go wrong with it and of course I need the oil changed every three months. Jack is always there to fix it without over charging. My dad was a mechanic so I know just enough about cars to know if I'm been lied to or not and Jack has never been anything but honest and forthright about what the car needs. He seems to be able to keep things within my limited budget and is simply a pleasure to work with. I have had many mechanics in LA since I have lived here but this is the shop to stick with.
