I was visiting Nashville and visiting a bbq restaurant was a must for my trip. I read through reviews on multiple locations and decided to give Jack's a try- I am so glad I did! Immediately upon entering the restaurant we were greeted by the smell of delicious, smoky bbq. My boyfriend and I both opted for the Texas Beef Brisket sandwiches, I had the regular and he had the jumbo. The gentleman helping us was kind enough to trim off some of the fat for me (don't judge, I just don't like fatty meat). We also ordered sides of potato salad, mac and cheese, and pickles. The brisket was so tender and had a delicious, smoky flavor. We tried a variety of sauces, which are kept warm, the XXX-911 was addictive! It was a combo of the Texas and Tennessee sauces with a kick of spice- the perfect balance of sweet and spicy. I'm not usually a sauce person, but I was dipping everything in it (including my pickles!). I was tempted to buy a bottle to take home, but I was worried about it breaking in my suitcase. My boyfriend enjoyed the potato salad and the mac and cheese was good- nothing special. The star was definitely the brisket, as it should be. Yummy!! Is the first thought that comes to mind!! Found this place on a whim driving through Nashville. It smelled amazing outside, all that smoke aroma! The staff was friendly and greeted us upon entering. Me being indecisive went with the 3 meat combo which was turkey, brisket and sausage. My sides were potato salad and corn. But only because I couldn't decide with all the side dish choices! The turkey and brisket were soft and moist. Really didn't need any of the many choices of sauce but I did anyway. The sausage had a good flavor too and not spicy. The potato salad was average, the corn was tasty. I would've preferred more butter in the Texas toast but it was still good soft and fresh. I been in this establishment maybe three or four times and I ordered a meal from there and I was not happy about my food being served to me with a stale, leftover, refrigerated taste.. the ribs were old and dry tasting and the Mac and Cheese was not cheesy and good, greens straight out the old can not seasoning the corn bread hard dry and nasty taste.. just straight meal and water.. chicken still bloody under cooked bones.. sausage old and not good.. hire new cooks that knows how to cook fresh meat and vegetables that guy with the dread locks is serving old food that's been sitting there for over 15hrs he never smile and never friendly.. always have a mean look on his face and gives you attitude.. please temp your hot line food and exchange the food that's been sitting for hours.. Craving some Nashville BBQ, we swung through this place's drive thru after finding promising reviews. We ordered brisket BBQ, corn bread, green beans, baked beans, and macaroni and cheese. We paid, they gave us our food, and sent us on our way. However, I'm glad we didn't drive off without checking for utensils in our bag. Cons: We weren't given utensils. Once we asked for them, they gave it to us AND two single serving bags of BBQ sauce. They didn't give us the BBQ sauce either until now! We thought the BBQ sauce was already poured on the meat, not given to us seperately by forgetful employees. We almost completely missed out! Also, the corn bread my husband ordered was missing. My corn bread was spongy and lacked butter and/or flavor. The green beans were significantly salty. Pros: The brisket was the HIT in the car, it was very juicy, flavorful and memorable! If they didn't remember to give us their BBQ sauce, it would be different. The baked beans were also delicious with a unique flavor. In the end, would like to give this location another shot if we're in the area. Recently stopped in for lunch. Used to frequent more often when I worked on north side of town. It was much better a few years ago. Had a brisket platter with two sides. While the sides were acceptable the brisket was dry and not warm enough. Additionally, while I understand inflation, a lunch platter with sub-par brisket with two sides and a drink for $30 is a joke. I ordered through DoorDash and upon delivery, more than half of my order (5 sandwiches and sauces) were missing. This place made my visit to Nashville complete. As a Chicago native my bar was set pretty high. The service and atmosphere was GREAT, for a line that went out the door and a location right on broadway, they move quick. I was a bit disappointed this time around. I'm not sure if I came towards the end of the day and all the good bbq was out, but it didn't seem as fresh as I remembered it to be. I ordered the St Louis style ribs and it was not the "fall off the bone" type as I remembered experiencing at the Broadway location. My son and I were looking for some authentic local bbq several weeks ago, and some locals recommended Jack's. We went to the Trinity Lane location, and had lunch. I had the brisket, and he got the pulled pork. The food was good, and the service was ok. So today we were on our way back north, and stopped at Jack's again for an early lunch (same location). The open sign was not lit, but we saw cars in the parking lot, and the schedule on the door said they open at 10:30. We tugged on the door handle, like normal, and it was still locked. We realized it was only 10:27, so we chuckled and assumed we would wait the 3 minutes for them to open. A moment later, a female employee came out of the same door, locked it behind her, threw her nose up in the air, and with a displeased look, blurted "10:30!" at us, as she walked around the side of the restaurant. We looked at each other, without saying a word, each of us knowing what the other was thinking, headed back to our vehicle, and drove away. Our first experience at Jack's was good enough that we returned for a second visit when we were back in the area. Never again! There are too many other options in Nashville to tolerate this pathetic treatment. Synopsis: Not my taste in barbecue at all. This place has a drive through. That seemed very considerate. I ordered a 2-meat combo platter with chicken and brisket. I prefer the excess fat be removed from a cut of meat prior to serving. The brisket is served with the fat still on it. It tasted funny but not necessarily bad. The chicken skin was crinkled; the chicken did fall off the bone but it was dryyy...as if it had been boiled, then baked. The cole slaw was principally some VERY course white cabbage with what tasted like sweet pickle juice. It was not good. The potato salad was neither exceptional nor exceptionally bad. It just wasn't worth the price, in my opinion. Walmart potato salad is at least on a par,if not better. The barbecue sauce wasn't really bad either. I thought it needed more citrus. Barely detectible smoke ring, almost no bark, just the faintest hint of smoke - hickory, not mesquite. Taste and texture were like pot roast. The mac and cheese served that way in the South was an abomination. Kraft in a box would have been a vast improvement. Baked beans and cornbread were OK. Picture this, you're on a very long road trip from Chicago to South Florida. You've been on the road for over 7 hours and the road snacks just aren't cutting it anymore. You need to eat and you're just outside of Nashville. One option is to drive into Nashville and partake of their world famous hot chicken but that is definitely going to take some time with the City traffic and long lines and you have a schedule to keep given that you are still roughly 15 hours away from your ultimate vacation destination. Another option and arguably a better option is to forgo the hot chicken and go for BBQ. So as you are driving along I-65 you spot exit 87/US 431 and right there you'll find Jack Cawthon's Bar-B-Que. Jack's was very good! The only thing I like more than Craft Beer is BBQ and this place nailed it. The first thing I notice whenever I venture out for BBQ is, do I smell smoke? If I can't, then where exactly is the food being prepared? Jack's definitely has this covered, first off you can see the wood stacks from the parking lot, you can smell, see and even taste the smoke the second you exit your car. So great start! The next thing I look for is how many items do they have on their menu? Just having tons of offerings isn't necessarily a good thing. I'd rather a place have just a few choices that are great than dozens that are mediocre at best. Jack's menu was exactly the right size. They have the staple BBQ items, Brisket, pulled pork, turkey, sausage links and ribs, along with some delicious sides (but more on the food later). Next, I like to see the looks on other patrons' faces as they are having their meal. Are they smiling and excited? Or do they look like they wish they had gone somewhere else? The folks in Jack's all looked very pleased and the dishes all looked delicious. So on to the food. Whenever I try a new spot I go straight for the brisket; it's the hardest thing to get right and the easiest to screw up. Good brisket is smoked low and slow, should be rested to lock in the moisture, have a nice smoke ring and good bark. Whatever rub is used should be enough to flavor the meat, without needing any extra sauce. In my opinion the sauce is just a compliment to the meat and not a necessity. Jack's nailed it on all levels. Juicy and delicious! We also had the pulled pork which was equally as good, mac and cheese, beans and greens. All were delicious. Finally, the staff was excellent; very friendly and informative. They made suggestions that were on point and as a great bonus for checking-in with Yelp, they gave us a free BBQ rub to take home. My kids loved the food as well they give cornbread which is very sweet and yummy I loved it it tasted like sweets bread I didn't even notice it was corn bread they give 2 slices per meal the pieces of meat are big the FUTURE TIP the kids meals is basically the same size as the adult meals !!! And they are couple dollars cheaper Only difference is the box LOL and they give you maybe 1 or 2 bites less worth of the sides but it comes with the same size chicken breast as a adult meal just the sides are smaller and the drink is a kids cup so if you are hungry but not starving you should get the kids meal! LOL anywhoo, there brisket was very juicy and tender top it off with the seasoning of your choice and BAM perfection !!! On the search for the best BBQ in Nashville, Jack's kept coming up. I had ate at the one on Broadway before I joined Yelp! a few years ago and I was with friends and wanted them to have a wonderful BBQ experience. When you enter Jack's, you go through the line, where your meat is sliced in front of you. I went with the combo which means I pick 3 meats and 2 sides. I went with ribs, brisket, and pork. I ate the ribs first as they had a good dry rub on them and a good blend of crunchy outside and juicy inside. They were of the shorter baby back variety. I followed that up with the brisket. The brisket was the best out of the meats. It was so tender and juicy, it literally fell apart. The pork wasn't as good as the ribs and brisket, but it was really good. It wasn't dry. Just wasn't as good as the brisket and ribs. I had potato salad and mac and cheese. There are several sides to choose from. The potato salad was a good mix of mayo and mustard and neither was overwhelming. The mac and cheese was better than the potato salad. Nothing extravagant about it, just good, cheesy, and homemade. What's really impressive about Jack's was the choices of sauces. 6 different types! The most unique one was the Tennessee. It was a vinegar base and I have never found another one like it. There was a Kansas City that was a sweet, smoky taste to it. It was my 2nd favorite and went better with the pork than the Tennessee. There was a Texas sweet and spicy, a tomato base with some heat. Another sauce was the XXX, which was a mix of the Tennessee and Texas, the hottest of the bunch. They also had a Carolina sauce, which was mustard base, but was a very strong mustard taste. The worst sauce of the bunch was the white sauce you have to ask for. I've just had better white sauce at other places. Sweet tea was refreshingly sweet! Based on the meats and sauce, Jack's should receive a 5. It seems like the sides needed a little more to lift Jack's up unto that 5 star range for me. read more
