i'm looking through the reviews and can't understand all the positive comments. Maybe they are for a different owner. I was walking around Alexandria and stumbled across this place and wanted breakfast. I ordered hot tea with lemon, but they don't have lemon. I ordered corned beef hash, made with "our own" corned beef and two over easy eggs. Potatoes and toast came with. I was told that while white or whole wheat toast are included, they also have rye and sour dough. I chose sour dough - and was then told it was a dollar extra. Ok. I received my tea - no spoon to stir in sugar. My food was served pretty quickly - on a paper plate with plastic fork and knife! My eggs were perfectly cooked. The corned beef hash was clearly out of a can, and mushy - merely heated - not browned at all. The potatoes were also undercooked, not browned at all. There was ONE piece of sour dough toast, which was really good bread, but barely toasted, that I paid $1 extra for. That is some expensive bread. I asked for ketchup. There are three tables of two, one table of four, and a counter seating about four in the restaurant. We all had to share the single bottle of ketchup. (!) The young woman server was lovely. But this felt like rip off. For this mess I paid $15! No need to go back. read more

Started out late, after spending a lazy, rainy, Sunday morning in bed where we had worked up an appetite! Apparently the mister had also smoked a little while we were getting ready- because our initial breakfast spot of choice, first we couldn't even find- and then was closed ‍. Anyways, Jack's was everything we needed and wanted! Tucked away on the corner of N. Lee Street, we were met with smiling faces, and a surprisingly clean & spotless establishment. The food was fresh, the flavors weren't super saturated with salt- and we left content- without feeling stuffed. Also, we didn't leave smelling like a greasy diner either. New owners have taken over and are just as friendly and accommodating as the previous ones were. New interior to the small but capable shop is clean and bright. The food is always fresh, made exactly as ordered. Prices are reasonable and menu is big for a small place. Small counter will be called intimate once the pandemic passes, but it also has small tables inside and outside if you desire al fresco dining. I always get the club sandwich with the wheat toast. Our breakfast was the most well-prepared (cooked) breakfast we had in a restaurant in a long time. The eggs were cooked perfectly. Perfectly. The avocado toast was served with bacon or egg (if you like) arugula greens, ripe tomatoes, and a delicious hot pepper sauce drizzle. Yum-O! The home fries were real potatoes and onions with a little heat (very slow build up). All in all this is a tiny quaint environment, welcoming owners, and beautiful food. I'm writing this review from a restaurant around the corner because the rudeness with which my boyfriend and I faced upon entering Jack's Place caused us to leave! When we walked in, we immediately did not feel welcomed. We stood at the door and there was silence, to the point where I suggested we just have a seat. As we were sitting, a young woman said hello and brought us menus. Then, as we were looked at the menu, a white couple walked in and the manager (non-Black) gave them a warm welcome: "good morning and welcome to Jack's Place!" Why weren't we shown the same curtesy and welcome? With that, we IMMEDIATELY left. If your restaurant is mildly successful with trash customer service with a side of racism, imagine how much business you could bring in by: "treating everyone the way you would want to be treated." Not a groundbreaking concept, given you're in the restaurant business, yet it seems to be at Jack's Place. Never returning. read more

If you can find it though, you're in for a treat. Everything here is made to order right in front of you. Despite being a tiny hole-in-the-wall restaurant, the menu is extensive... there are 3 or 4 pages of sandwiches to choose from for lunch and a huge breakfast selection. Everything is made to order & most the sandwiches are hot or grilled. The roast beef au jus is my favorite so far, but the cheese steak is a close 2nd place. Lunch + a soda will run about $7 or $8, not bad for a hot sandwich/sub, soda, & side dish in Old Town. If you're going on your lunch break be prepared though... Jack's can get pretty busy. There are usually only one or two guys making all the food, so the wait will be a bit longer than you're probably used to. read more

There's only one word that can describe Jack's Place: local. You can tell this joint was hopping before neighboring King Street became a mecca of tourism and lecherous guys with high and tights started infiltrating Old Town on weekends. The generations of pictures and photo-holiday cards posted on the walls are a tell-all of this little diner's history. And there's even a special wall for pet photos. There are spots for precisely 16 people inside...four tables and the rest counter space, so it truly is a small mom and pop kinda place. Breakfast is served Monday through Friday until 10:45, not quite sure about the weekend hours for breakfast. Breakfast prices here can only be beat by one place in the area -- Blue and White Carryout -- but here you get a much bigger menu, a choice of bread, and chairs to sit in. Well worth the extra fiddy cent for a breakfast sandwich. They only use olive oil for their cooking, so even though the place looks like a grease spoon, it ends up tasting a lot better..dare I say healthy? The fresh tomatoes and green (not iceberg) lettuce agree. I'll definitely come back again, whenever I happen to have paper money on me (CASH ONLY), and if I become enough of a regular, maybe Meow Meow will find her photo on the wall! read more

Every now and then, I find myself craving a big breakfast from a greasy diner. Thanks to this spot, I no longer have to drive out to Bob & Edith's to get my fix. While the size and service are less than ideal here, the food is on point. I have been here for breakfast a few times and have always left satisfied. Everything is super fresh and made to order. My favorite item so far has been the Damn Good Omelette, a fluffy omelette loaded with pastrami, cheese, and onion. Their corned beef hash tastes excellent, and is surprisingly cheap, but they kinda skimp on the corned beef and overdo it with the potatoes. If they upped the price point so that they could be more generous with the corned beef, this dish would be a star. This establishment is terribly small: the bar seats about a half dozen, and they have a couple of tables inside and one or two more outside. On the weekend, you have to get there early to get a seat. (I tried to get in at about 9 on Memorial Day and the place was at capacity.) Also, they could use a dedicated server for peak times. It seems like they have one guy doing everything (cooking, serving, closing checks, etc.), so the service, while not horrible, is not particularly attentive. (Just a note: The overall rating on this place seems to have been dragged down by poor reviews from the distant past. This place is under new ownership, so you can safely disregard any review more than a year old.) read more

From my brief visit to Jack's Place, I can see how some would be turned off by how the regulars might be treated as family and the newbies treated as second class citizens. That wasn't my experience at all, though. I was greeted with a good morning on a Saturday shortly after opening. Jack was at the grill, making sure everything met the high standards of his diner. The other staff member manning the register was very welcoming, though clearly the regulars had the inside track. If you don't get a menu when you sit down, just grab one from the counter (blue for breakfast). I selected (with a little Yelper help) the "breakfast usual" BLT+E on Italian bread. It was magnificent and a steal for Old Town. Don't be discouraged by those who say that non-locals will get sub-standard service. Just be friendly and down-to-earth, and you'll be treated well. This is our favorite low-key, reasonable weekend brunch spot. Service is friendly, but occasionally a bit forgetful. Food is inventive for a diner--our favorites are the Old Town Avocado Toast and Jim's Midnight Special. Fresh-squeezed OJ is also superb. Food is fresh and we've found the place to be notably clean. absolutely love how teeny this place is. granted, we had to wait about 10 minutes to be seated but it didn't matter to us because our orders were taken right away and the vibe inside was homey - people were kind of talking to everyone, conversations were overlapping across tables, and these strangers made the 10 minutes pass quickly for us. the food was freshly made... they kind of can't really cheat is because their kitchen is right in front of you. the owners/staff/family that ran it were quiet but efficient. fantastic breakfast, great company, definitely a place to come back to. read more

Finally got around to checkout out Jack's Place. Friendly, fast, and delicious. I ordered a bacon egg and cheese on an everything bagel, homefries, and coffee. The BEC was wonderful! The homefries weren't bad (larger cubes + sautéed onions) and the coffee was simple and tasty. Received a ton of food for around $10. The people working were extremely friendly. They take all major cards and serve breakfast all day on the weekends. Free 2 hour street parking for when you don't feel like walking (I'm looking at you, 10 degree weather). Very happy to have stopped in and can't wait to go back in the future. Solid solid breakfast spot in old town! read more

Nice little spot, I love the fact that you are watching them cook your food from about 20 feet away. The homemade corned beef is great as their corned beef hash and the omelets are very good. Fast and friendly service with fresh squeezed orange juice available. Last I went I didn't get the toast with my omelet. I wish they gave a side of home fries with orders like many places do. Unfortunately you need to order it on the side. I had a better experience the first time I went than the second, but I will be back at some point soon. read more
