Nice little spot, I love the fact that you are watching them cook your food from about 20 feet away. The homemade corned beef is great as their corned beef hash and the omelets are very good. Fast and friendly service with fresh squeezed orange juice available. Last I went I didn't get the toast with my omelet. I wish they gave a side of home fries with orders like many places do. Small family owned deli/ breakfast place. Seats about 12 people. Even with small numbers of seats, they somehow forgot about my order for 45 minutes. Part of my order involved a side of toast. As I watched them cut my toast in half, one of the halves fell on the floor. Instead of making a new piece of toast, they just served me 3 halves of toast. Finally, they told me they were sorry, but didn't even try to offer a discount or anything to make up for the screw up. I sat there and watched them screw up 3 other orders in the 1 1/2 hours I was there. Maybe they were just having a bad day, but the mediocre food here doesn't make it worth a second try to find out. In all of the years we have lived in Alexandria, we have never tried this place. Yesterday, as we rode our bikes up that way we decided to give it a go. It's a really tiny little place, but with great service and really good food. I ordered the eggs over corned beef hash and my husband ordered the omelette. Both were super delicious. The egg (over easy) was cooked just the right way, which is not always an easy thing to find around here. It sat a top a generous portion of potatoes with nice big chunks of real corned beef in it. So good. Even though it was crazy packed, the owner served us with a smile and asked us if we wanted a refill on our coffee. You could really see the pride he takes in his cafe. And the locals really seem to love the place. We will definitely be back. read more

Things that aren't so great about Jack's: 1) Teeny tiny eensy weensy. Four tables (2 of them high-toppers) and six seats at the counter. And everything right on top of each other. Cramped to end all cramping. 2) Disposable Styrofoam and plastic *everything* from the coffee cups to the plates to the cutlery. Soooo wasteful. 3) Loud, loud patrons. If you don't eat here all the time, you are pegged as an interloper as soon as you walk through the door and are subject to said regulars engaging in a restaurant-wide, unnecessarily loud conversation. 4) Cash only. Jack's get points for being as close to a diner as Alexandria seems interested in offering. (Runner up award to Table Talk.) We ended up here on a Saturday morning. The place is very, very small and you must show initiative to get service. As in, ask for a menu. Tell them when you are ready to order. Have your second, third and fourth choice ready when they announce they are out of things like sausage and chile and the type of bagel you really wanted. The coffee is instant and it's not easily refilled. Food is okay. Just okay. The bacon servings are enormous and nothing's so greasy as to be disgusting. It was just totally okay food in a very cramped environment with no real focus on pretending to care about your experience. All of this would have been cool for 2/3rds the price... but the two of us spend nearly 30$ for breakfast. Some of these negative reviews are hilarious. This is a small, local eatery in Old Town. The food is down to earth, wholesome and pretty inexpensive by NoVA standards. Jack's is geared more toward the local crowd than the tourists which is probably what I like most about it. You don't go there for culinary magic. It isn't a chain restaurant "concept." For breakfast I ordered on the menu what is called "DeLox Accommodations" For $6.95, you get a thick slab of cream chease, with a slice of onion, tomato and cuts of smoked salmon on your choice of bagel. This sandwich was OUTSTANDING. As I was there enjoying my breakfast everytime someone came in the door they were greeted with a warm hello and called by their name. So you can tell this is definately a local hang out spot with a friendly atmosphere. Across from me sat an architect who was drawing their latest layout on paper while enjoying a huge thick blueberry pancake. Around the counter at bar stools sat several of the retired locals discussing the previous nights football game. Adorning the walls are sports memorbelia, along with family and friends. Don't expect to show up here and get a seat. There are about 4 tables to sit at, and the counter area with bar stools fills up very quickly. I lucked out and got there just before people started showing up and was lucky enough to get a table. So this is seriously NO FRILLS. Do not expect "brunch" or even a diner feel. It's a small shop that is primarily a grill and a bar and a couple tables. We were here for breakfast and left happy, full and satisfied with eggs, pancakes (one is plenty - they are huge), bacon, hash, etc. and it was super inexpensive. One thing I really liked is that this feels like somewhere that there are a lot of regulars and there's a bit of an etiquette of ordering at the bar, and talking to other customers. Some might say that breakfast is just breakfast, but it is never just breakfast as Jack's Place. I don't know what they do to their food. I don't care for omelets. I love eggs, but not omelets. Jack's omelets are not only packed with ingredients, but there is something that grabs your tastes buds and won't let go. I always get the western with bacon and coffee. The only thing in the whole place that I don't usually get is the hash brown. It is the basic, flat patty. Nothing wrong with that at all. It is fitting for the place. I just don't care for it. I wish there were some fun spices on it. Outside of that I have enjoyed everything else there. They have great sandwiches too. Jack's Etiquette: If you are sitting at the bar, pass the food or drinks to the table just past you. Siting at the bar means you 'get involved.' This is one of the things that makes Jack's seem like you are eating with friends even though you don't know anyone else in the place. It is so small that you become friendly very quickly. I've tried to go to this place before but every time they have been closed. Its very small and I think Jack must be a huge fan of the Nats, he has pictures posted up all over his place and he wears a Nats baseball cap while slaving over the hot grill, seems like a super relaxed guy just livin the dream. The place is pretty small and I sat at one of the ~5 seats at the bar which faces the griddle and the waitress. Dont expect to bring a big group here and I would recommend as soon as you come in grab one of the menus at the bar and order there as well, seems to be the best plan of attack. Good little casual quick breakfast spot in Old Town just a couple blocks away from King street. It's no frills but sometimes you just really want that Waffle House-esque, breakfast of champions, hearty meal and you can get that at Jack's. Alas, I eat cheese, not meat. Anyway, my quesadilla was fine. To be fair, I'm from Texas... at least he had lots of good hot sauces to help it out... hooray for Cholula. It came with a bag of chips. I also had a pickle slice that was good. As for all the reviews about the "locals only" vibe... there's definitely truth to that, but if you make a good effort to relate, you'll meet some really interesting people. This place is all about the locals. Going into this small hole-in-the-wall is like going back in time to the 80s when the Chicago Bears ruled the NFL, from the tunes coming out of the speakers to the old pictures of patrons' cats and dogs on the wall. Jack himself is manning the counter of this unpretentious, no-frills breakfast and lunch place. We were luck enough to snag one of the four tables and ordered an omelet and an all-over breakfast plate with eggs, bacon, hash browns and toast. The all-over breakfast plate was interesting, as it came out almost like a sandwich, with the hash browns in patties topped with eggs topped with american cheese topped with bacon. It was good, but definitely tasted like everything came out of the freezer. The bacon was cooked perfectly. I think this place is perfect if you live within a few blocks and can come over here for a lazy breakfast or lunch; it seems like most of the people do know each other and the camaraderie was high. I don't think it's a place to seek out if you live far away. Jack's is one o f those old-style city coffee shops which have a cadre of regulars. It falls short in serving food on styrofoam plates and throw-away plastic forks. Besides being wasteful, takes away from the breakfast experience. They now have actual cups (probably a limited supply - you may want to have a travel mug just in case). The food - a selection of basic items, and some good omelets. Unfortunately, they do not serve grits, which is generally a mainstay for a Virginia restaurant, not to mention this being a breakfast restaurant with no hot cereal. The reason for two stars - low prices and the grilled food is prepared with actual vegetable oil (I think the menu said olive oil, but it was something that typically is not trans-fat). The food itself is well-prepared, which is a reason one has no regrets. They have an interesting approach to coffee service. They apparently don't have "continuous" refills, but have graduated prices on the coffee. What that means is that you don't pay twice when you refill your coffee; just a small amount extra. Unfortunately the coffee falls short in the taste. I would suggest visiting for the experience, but don't expect more than food on foam plates and mediocre coffee. read more

This is an old deli converted to a restaurant and to my quick observation, seats about 16-18 people including the 4 stools at the counter. Don't come here with a group of 6 and expect quick service simply because it can't accommodate it. With that being said, breakfast is a straightforward menu except for the French Toast which is made with Italian bread, and I recommend. Walk in and grab the blue menu off the counter and order there as well. I see other reviews mentioning how there are locals and maybe newbies are treated differently. One of my favorite breakfasts joints in the area. My only gripe is that they don't serve it all day. The best eggs I have ever had at a breakfast place. Bacon that's cooked perfectly every time.
