My spouse and I are not avid seafood eaters. I was allergic for many years and Spouse usually just does not like seafood. I had a cup of clam chowder, 1/2 crab sandwich + chips and a pint of Humboldt Cider. --Clam chowder was nice, thick and creamy with lots of potatoes and clam pieces. The cup was a good sized portion! --The crab sandwich was delicious. Not super excited about the bread/roll it was on. I am a Brio Bread and Mazzoti's on the Plaza bread lover so I may be a tad biased. Could have used a bit more of the crab salad filling inside (I would probably always say that). --There were plenty of chips (potato wedges) to go along with my half crab sandwich. Spouse had the fish and chips and really liked it (she does not usually eat ANY meat or seafood). We shared the brownie sundae. Super yummy! Lovely presentation and great large, chewy brownie with a creamy vanilla ice cream. Way too much for one person! Wonderful views of boats coming and going. The location is right on the plaza next to where the Madaket cruises depart. It looked like they had outside seating. I could imagine it would be a wonderful place to hang out on a sunny day seated outside! Maybe even for dessert and a pint of Humboldt Cider! We will go back and try some of their other menu items. Well, we have been there twice, our first and our last times. The chowder was made with a broth that we were told was thickened with corn meal. Since when does corn meal thicken anything? It left a residue of meal all over the bowl and in my mouth. They explained that the meal was being used to satisfy the gluten free needs of their customers. Maybe they should have used corn starch. Enough about the soup... the calimari had a burnt oily taste to it, was rubbery, and some of the rings were full of uncooked oil soaked batter. Not very pleasant to eat, so we didn't. $3 for a cup of coffee... WOW. Waitress didn't even stop by and see if we needed a refill. Looks like they went out and picked up some old tables from a defunked restaurant. Must have done the same with the kitchen equipment, old and dirty looking. Concrete floors were not sealed and looked dirty. The sunset was great, but next time we go to the waterfront to eat and watch the sunset we will bring our own food. We heard there was a new seafood place in town and decided to give it a try. We were pleasantly surprised by Jacks. In the beginning the service could have been a little faster, but they were busy. All three of us had the clam chowder and thought is was very good; oddly enough, my bowl was steaming hot, but the other two bowls were lukewarm. We ordered a 1/2 dozen oysters and they were very good. I had the seafood alfredo and really enjoyed it. The shrimp and scallops were cooked perfectly and the portion was so big I couldn't finish it. My wife ordered the steamer clams (it is an appetizer) and was very happy with her dish, the broth was amazing with lots of garlic and white wine. Our friend had the cashew crusted petrale sole. It was also very good, but she found her zucchini to be cold. Overall, it was a very nice meal and we will be back. It's become one of our favorite seafood restaurants in Eureka. Tonight is our seventh time eating here. We know the owner and the chef and the dining room manager so we were and are excited for them to get going after months of anticipation. They have been open for less than a month so they are still working out some of the details. The food is consistently very good although there is some minor inconsistency of the specific flavor profiles of staples like the clam chowder and the tartar sauce. My friend and I went to Jack's for dinner tonight, and overall, we really enjoyed it! The iced tea is really unique - it has some spices in it (cinnamon, clove maybe....I'm not sure exactly what, but it's yummy) that made it taste really different and good. I added sugar, expecting it to be like all other "garden variety" iced tea, then realized it didn't need it. The salad was pretty good, but like others have said, we found the house dressing was a little....weird. My friend ended up asking for oil and vinegar instead. I ate mine with the dressing, but wasn't terribly thrilled with it. For dinner, I had the crab sandwich, and it was THE BOMB!!! Seriously, sooo good!! Tons of flavor, and the locally-made sourdough it came on was fabulous! My friend ordered the sauteed halibut and, while she said it was delicious, found the portion to be way too small. (It looked really small when it came to the table, but we assumed it was just because it came on a ginormous plate.) She ended up helping me polish off my chips, then texted me 2 hours later saying she was still hungry from dinner. Service was prompt, and our server, who was also the manager, was fantastic! No complaints there! We understand the place is still very new and working out the bugs, so we took the little "glitches" in stride. I think once they are really in full swing, this will be a fantastic place! I plan to take my husband in a few weeks to check it out - I think he'll love it! read more

This review is given for the service and experience, not for the food. I would give it a zero if I could. We tried to place a takeout order on the phone, they said we have to do it in-person, that's the first red flag. When we got there, they were under staffed and we waited to get our order in for only 2 items. The staff quoted us 15-20min wait. When we returned to pick up our order, they told us there's a mixed up on their end and we have to keep waiting. Overall we spent like an hour total first driving there to place the order, plus waiting in line and wait for them to actually prepare the food. As tourists, we were very lucky to wander into Jack's on the grand opening. Fantastic location on the water with outdoor seating and great views from the interior. Unlike most "view" restaurants, the food here was really good. I had a half crab sandwich and clam chowder. They were both excellent. The chowder contains a great deal of clams with a delicious broth, without the thick flour consistency of many chowders. The crab sandwich is huge, I couldn't eat the 1/2 size. The only cons were the details of dinner ware- thick mason jar water glasses, small generic wine glasses and strange slanted soup bowls. In conclusion - highly recommended. read more

Great food, service, ambiance and the selection was beyond anything I could wish for. My son had the kobe beef cheeseburger and I had the chowder with a fish sandwich. Average. Really disappointing. I chose this restaurant for lunch because they were serving cioppino. I was looking forward to it based on the pictures. Ordered ciopinno from them plus other food to go. They put the Ciopinno in a paper box and aluminum foil. It was all in the plastic bag by the time we opened it. zero care for the food they server, and when you call them, they say what do you want me to do. They forgot our clam chowder and had bone in the fish tacos and the ciopinno. Not a good experience. There is a reason for the low stars. read more

Very nice and relaxing vibe especially when having a table by the beautiful scenic view of the bay. I ordered the linguine with clams and got the clam chowder soup as the side. Clam chowder was alright, it had extra ingredients in it that I was trying to figure out though the scallops were a good sized portion. The linguine had A LOT of clams which I did not expect. I ended up giving some too my parents and still felt very full. I think it's a good portion of fresh seafood caught from nearby waters that makes it great for its price. Worst seafood ever. Batter was undercooked and gummy. 19.95 combination platter was three shrimp a one small piece of fish. Greasy and cold. Five french fries yes five. When I asked about the portion issue I was ignored. I was supposed to get a cup of chowder and got 1/2 of a cup put into a bowl to make it look bigger. This establishment spent no more than three dollars at best. In a word TERRIBLE don't waist your money. Its It's obvious most people don't know good seafood or likely they are family. read more

I like the rustic looks of the restaurant. We were really hungry when we get there, after spending a few days in the redwoods. It was right on the water where you can watch the boats coming in and out, they had the BEST clam chowder I've ever had & my husband and i got the crab and crab cake sandwiches and they did not disappoint! My husband and I are a bit confused by this place. We feel like they have the location everyone would want in Eureka. Waterfront is right there but they don't show case it. Food was good. I know that Jack's has had some start up problems so I waited and looked at only the reviews for October, 2015. It seemed like people were much happier. So a friend and I tried the restaurant at 7 pm on October 24 with a reservation for the two of us. We were seated within 15 minutes and were happy. I ordered the sauteed Halibut and my friend ordered the Cashew crusted sole. We both had the clam chowder. We waited for a while and the waiter apologized for the delay for the soup but that the chef wanted it hot. It came out a bit later and was not as hot as a cup of coffee. It tasted great but was certainly not hot. When our entrees came, the cashew crusted sole 7" wide by 10" long. My friend was somewhat embarrassed because my halibut was so small (about the size of a playing card and only 1/2" thick). My halibut required a knife to cut through the pan searing on the bottom and it was overcooked. My friend cut a piece of her sole and put it on my plate. It was also overcooked and pretty tasteless. On the other hand, the summer squash had been grilled and was really good. Both of us had oven roasted potatoes which had a nice flavor but were also not very warm. I wish it had been better. I'll probably not go back. Too bad. The location is wonderful and the interior is neat and clean. Having told you about our experience, I will say that I didn't complain to anyone in the restaurant. And I saw people there having a good time and seemed to enjoy their dinners. I paid $18 for the halibut and $11 for a glass of Pinot Gregio. Same prices for my friends sole and wine. read more

We came for dinner after Art Alive in downtown Eureka. I had the halibut and my husband had the scallops. His was good but mine was better. Easily accommodated gluten and dairy allergies for us. Hubby and I decided to try something new on our anniversary this year, and we'd been eyeing this establishment for a while. He had the crab mac & cheese (an available variation on their chicken mac & cheese) with clam chowder on the side; I had the fish and chips (the lingcod, not the halibut); and we split a coconut shrimp appetizer and a pint of local tart cherry cider. The prawns (served butterflied; not a vein to be seen) have to be tried to be believed. The fish was so light and flaky that it pretty much fell apart; I'm not normally fond of coleslaw, but the spicy coleslaw completely dodged the excessive sweetness that dominates the dish at so many other restaurants. Hubby had nothing but praise for his mac & cheese (which was swimming in creamy cheddar sauce, with a grated cheese blend forming a sort of crust over the top of it). The clam chowder was also excellent; Jack's makes the unusual choice of adding carrots, and gives you a slice of bread with what hubby believes was garlic scape butter to mop up the last of it. After the most dismal restaurant experience ever in Fortuna followed by an eternity on highway 1, we were hungry and in need of a reminder that great restaurants do exist. Jacks saved us. Wait staff courteous and welcoming, check. Tables nicely distanced in nice ding room, check. Menu appealing, check. Sis had oyster on half shell, raw and slurped them down gleefully, rolling her eyes in wonder now and then. Both ordered halibut fish and chips with spicy slaw: hell to the yeah! Well, we got here at 7:30, and as we walked in the door, we almost got run over by a woman carrying a water tray at mach speed, with no "excuse me" or "sorry". As she was walking away she shouted "tables are full! Sit at the bar!" The best review I have however, is the sweet waitress who waited on us. She was really attentive. Her name is Michelle, and sweet as pie. WAY TO GO, GIRL!! She handled the pressure beautifully, especially for this being her 2nd day on the job. While we wait for over an hour for our dinner, we witnessed the same woman who almost ran us over yelling at various staff members unabashedly. I can only assume this woman is the owner/manager. I had ordered the fish and chips, and they were just horrible. No flavor, soggy and not even enough vinegar and lemon could cover up the amount of grease that dripped off of them. I had to send my plate back to Michelle, but we still ordered dessert. The Jack's dessert was very simple, but amazing. All said and done, I understand the understaffing stress, but this is no excuse to be rude with no apologies. If you can't handle the stress of simple understaffing issues without demeaning others, then you should NOT be on the restaurant business. The only reason I'm giving this restaurant any stars at all is because of Michelle, and a dessert that was really good, but I could have easily made at home. read more
