The view was great!. The service was good. Portions were small. For being voted for having the best fish and chips in Humboldt that may be a little overrated, they were pretty oily. Found it on TripAdvisor heading S on the 101. Wanted seafood. Had 3 great entrees that were reasonably priced. Seared ahi tuna salad had great greens with grilled pineapple & light dressing. The 4 fish tacos were delightful. Grilled not fried, nicely balanced sauce. Rice pilaf simple but very complimentary. The sautéed fish sandwich was halibut & cod on toasted sour dough bread w/potato wedges & chipotle mayo sauce. I have noted Jack's in my restaurant list for a repeat next time close. read more

Went in for lunch on a Sunday. Took an hour to get a grilled cheese and a cup of chowder. Had to ask for water 20 minutes after we ordered. Had 2 different waitresses neither seemed to know whose table it was. Chowder had to go back cause it was cold. The chowder was OK. I am not a fan of waiters not using trays, I don't really want your thumb in my soup. I also think waiters should wear closed toe shoes, flip flop sandals seem kinda dangerous.. I was so excited to visit this restaurant because they boast useage of local seafood, but was quickly disappointed when the only local seafood was oysters and maybe the clams. We went with a large group, so many dishes were tried. I tried the chef's special of cioppino, and while the base was good the seafood was primarily frozen, non-local seafood that was rubbery. The clams were the only thing that tasted remotely fresh. Presentation was beautiful, but it made it that much more disappointing that the taste and texture weren't as beautiful. Overall for the price I'd rather buy actual fresh, local seafood from fisherman and cooked at home. Might try it again if/when fresh tuna, salmon, or halibut are available. read more

Great seafood spot in old town. creative dishes, especially the sauces (loved the chili sauce and homemade cocktail sauce) . Pretty simple menu but there are lots of specials(4-5 when we were there) - everything we ordered was perfect (get the calamari!!!). Not over-priced. Lots of local and organic ingredients. Very friendly waitstaff. Wonderful atmosphere for a date. We brought a baby and they were very friendly / accommodating. Bottom line: if you want to place that reminds you of being out to eat in the SF marina, check this place out. read more

I had never even heard of this place before and was pleased to finally be able to try it. The food was alright small portions for the price. I will say though that the crab sandwich is really good. The staff were friendly; at times almost too friendly as they continually stopped by the table every minute. But "hey" better than ignoring the table the entire time. I ordered a clam chowder to go. It was no salt in it and I was not able to chew the clams, so I spited it out.

The only thing that was good was the halibut everything else was disgusting cold and uncooked my dad said the rice was uncooked we all tried it he thought it was so bad on his first bite he would never do this in any restaurant but he had to spit it out in front of everybody it was an awful experience the waiters are good but other than that it's a horror house read more

We ate here a couple of times. The atmosphere is nice, waitresses and waiters are very accommodating. Food is better than a lot of places in this area - still, it feels very commercial. Since it was one of the better choices we had found we tried to enjoy a night of having some of their best options. This place has a big selection of fish, including pastas, so I ordered the seafood fettuccini. It was not very good, and I think there was a bunch of onions in it, way more than what you'd expect. My boyfriend ordered the the fish tacos and he thinks they were good, but he tried my pasta and agreed that it could have been a lot better. Maybe if it was $10 a plate it'd be 4 or 5 stars, but for the prices they charge the food could be better. read more

Sorry Jack but I'm doing this for your own good. I've been to your establishment three times. The first two times were delightful. Those first two visits I had crab cakes, clam chowder, steamer clams, coconut prawns. Loved all of it. But today was different. I ordered several of my favorites but today you polluted the steamer clams with pasta! OMG! All I wanted was the clams and your wonderful broth like it was served two weeks ago. Please Jack please don't pollute your steamer clam appetizer with pasta any more! But get this... the crappy steamer clams were not my only disappointment. Today I ordered your caesar salad. What a mistake! It was perhaps the worst caesar salad I've ever had. The problem was the dressing. Just about the most uninteresting caesar salad dressing imaginable. So, my friends, be warned. You can get some excellent dishes at Jack's, but you can get losers as well. Be careful when you order. Mention this post and don't be afraid to ask your waitperson questions. Bon appetit! read more

While in town for a week we had lunch and dinner here. Had a bowl of clam chowder for lunch and found it good but not outstanding. Dinner on the other hand was excellent. The menu has a nice selection of seafood and the wine list, while small, was very reasonably priced and every wine was available by the glass or bottle. The seafood fettuccine with 4 large shrimp and 4 large scallops was outstanding as was the large dinner salad with a nice mix of greens. The decor was very modern with a nice view of the bay. This was our first visit for dinner, I realize the place is new so I expect a few hiccups. We walked in to a fairly empty place, it then got busy and our wait staff frazzled and just flat fell apart. After delivering most of our food, our waitress disappeared an order short. (Our child's meal) She forgot to come back to check on us, my wife had to get up and go ask her where our child's order was. Additionally, our waitress forgot to offer any condiments on the food she did deliver nor did she offer any drink refills. Our missing order arrived when everyone had shared and we all were done. The food was not something I would be excited to return for either. Soggy fish and chips...bizarre chips which looked like breakfast potatoes at a best western breakfast buffet. (I actually had better fish and chips on a trip to Arkansas. Ouch!) The clam chowder they served separated and was luke warm. The fish tacos looked good however the fish was unseasoned and bland. I'm not trying to rip this place up, just sharing our experience in hopes that they fix the bugs or that people with high hopes for good meal by the bay know what they may be in for. read more

We saw Jacks got mixed reviews but my husband and I decided to try it. I'm so glad we did. Everything was excellent. We got the calamari and clam chowder to start. Both were flavorful and well done; the calamari was seasoned perfectly. Then I got the fish sandwich and my husband got the fish and chips. The fish was tender and perfectly cooked. We also each got a beer; the Humboldt Cider Company apple and cherry cider was awesome. Our server Bradly was both kind and knowledgeable. You also can't beat the view! All in all, a wonderful place for a romantic date. I'm not sure why this place got such mediocre reviews; give it a try for yourself. read more

Oh my goodness. What a disappointment. We went there after Art's Alive with high expectations as we were glad to finally see a restaurant open at this location. The first thing I noticed is the noise level was high. We had a reservation, we seated promptly, and were at once offered water (came in "mason" jars. We ordered drinks and I ordered the Mad River Jamaica IPA. Glad to see two local beers on tap (they also had Lost Coast Great White along with Sierra Nevada Pale Ale and a Cider. So after a long time the server comes back and informs me the IPA was :gone". So what is the story? You don't have a replacement key in the back? Anyway I ordered the cider as a substitute which was actually quite good. But running out of the IPA should been a warning of what was to come. I ordered the Ahi Salad and a cup of clam chowder. After a long wait the server returned and told me they were out of clam chowder. Would I settle for the Vegetable Soup? As that was the only other choice I agreed. It came and it was not only lukewarm, but tasted really weird, like there was burnt plastic in it. The others in my party had ordered prawns, Filet Mignon, and a rib eye. Their entrees came while they were working on their salads and they were on huge plates lite the over-sized bowls for the salads and soup. There was no room on the table for everything. You had to give up your unfinished salad or dump it on your entree plate which is what they did. Those over-sized plates are ridiculous. At this point and only at this point did the server inform me they were out of ahi. I asked for a menu to make another choice though in hindsight I should have just settled for the mediocre bowl of soup. I ordered a rib eye steak. So how was the food? I have already commented on the strange tasting soup. My wife's filet mignon had a large portion of fat on one side. Maybe 2 oz of the 8 oz offering. Not really acceptable for a $30 fillet. My rib eye (where you expect some fat was probably 25 percent fat . Both cuts of meat were quite inferior. The prawns my brother got were a small portion and covered with thick batter. I tried a small taste and the flavor was weird and the batter very doughy. We were not offered bread with our meal. So overall this was not a good experience with three important menu items not available, and a lot of mediocre food. The server was attentive and apologetic and she msde the same comment reported by others ---they are working out the kinks. Maybe so, but I doubt I will give them a second chance as there are three nice sea food alternatives available in Cafe Marina, Cafe Waterfront, and Sea Grill unless I get reports of a big improvement. I will be watching future ratings here by others with interest. read more

We just came back from dinner @Jacks. This was our second time having dinner there. I have to say they have stepped up their game. So much so that I just had to delete my old review and give them a few more stars. They have a new clam chowder that is really good. It was thick and creamy, and the potatoes were not to big. The clams were fresh and not chewy. The oysters were cooked perfectly, which means basically almost raw. My rib eye steak was cooked just how I asked (med rare) and was nice and juicy. My girls seared Ahi salad was great. The owner even came by to make sure we were happy. Our server was on point. The main course took awhile to come out, and our server hooked me up w a free beer to compensate. Way to go Jake's. read more

I don't know where to begin with this review. We sat at our table for 25 minutes without anyone acknowledging us after asking for a server three times. It seemed very disorganized and there was a lack of communication between the employees. We eventually got up and ordered our beers and wine at the bar. Someone finally took our appetizer order after 40 minutes. Everything came out one at a time dragging our meal out to be about 3 hours. While sitting we noticed at least 4 tables sat down and left because they too didn't get even a drink order in. Finally our dinner came out, of the 4 entrees 3 of them were luke warm and or cold. However one person at our table really liked the crab sandwich and the coconut prawns were pretty good. Oh to top off the evening we found a hair in the scallops! Hopefully it will turn around because it is in a very pretty spot on the bay. read more

The floors are sealed now; the decor some kind of industrial theme. We waited forever for coconut shrimp appetizer; it was good. The sweet chili sauce is more chili than sweet. The waitress forgot our soup. The swordfish was rubbery and had a lot of gray in it, but the crust and salsa on it were well prepared.. The cashew-crusted sole was soggy. The seasonal veggies on my plate were burnt, on my partners, done to perfection. We skipped desert, as we were not adventurous any longer. read more

Had the worst service experience there ever in my life:( very sad as it had such good reviews. Reservation for 6:30, check. Arrived 10 minutes early as curtsy, check. Ordered drinks, received them 20 minutes later. Have to ask the waiter to take our order? What? Ok we are ready to order. Thank you 1 hour later the appetizers arrive. 45 minutes after that one person of our ten is served. 20 minutes later my friends 3 year old daughter,"I'm so hungry!" Ok that's the last straw. No amount of good company makes this long a wait acceptable. I ask to speak to the manager and they cordially bring the waiter over. His explanation is there's new people in the kitchen that don't know exactly what their doing. Unfortunately this can not be the case as the party of ten that arrived 90 minutes into this escapade receiver their drinks appetizers and food order within ten minutes of arrival:( oh honey if your new say so, if you messed up own it. If you have to point the finger at someone else to make it ok, it's not. Needless to say, won't be going there again. The only good thing about our visit was our server, who did her best to keep our table of 8 informed and to resolve issues, which were many. Unfortunately, I don't think she'll be there long because diners tend to tip based on their overall experience and not just on their server's efforts, so it seems like a good server won't stick around for very long if diners show their dissatisfaction by not tipping or tipping very little. First . . . our experience just trying to get into the restaurant revealed disorganized and inconsistent management. The first time we tried to go, there were no tables inside and we thought we'd give the outdoor tables a try. The tables were so small and so close together that it was very difficult to seat ourselves without elbowing someone at the next table. The sun was shining right in the eyes of those of us facing west and there was no way to block it, so it seems like the only way one could really sit outdoors in the late afternoon or evening would be if guests sat in east-facing chairs with no one on the other side of the table. We decided to leave before we ordered and asked about making reservations for next time. My family of 5 was told that Jack's only accepted reservations for groups of 6 or more, which made no sense since groups of 2, 3 or 4 are the most common table sizes and anything 5 or over really needs to be able to reserve. A "no reservations" policy I could understand, but not that one. On our second attempt, we arrived, indicated we were a party of 5 and were asked if we had a reservation . . . what? A reservation? How could I have a reservation if I'm not a party of 6 or more? Oh, the rules changed, now they accept reservations for groups of any size! The wait was more than 45 minutes, so once again we went elsewhere. On our third attempt, armed with the new knowledge that they accept reservations for groups of any size, we made a reservation and were accompanied by 3 friends. We arrived on time and waited about 20 minutes before we were seated. I realize that some table turnover is not within their control, and wouldn't even mention it if it weren't for the fact that there was very little good about our experience. We ordered appetizers of calamari, coconut prawns and raw oysters. The first thing to come out was the calamari, the largest appetizer serving size I've ever seen, which was either burned or cooked in oil that had burned, and was inedible. When the oysters arrived, we sent the calamari back and our server indicated the kitchen was having some trouble with one of the fryers. I took that at face value until today when I read and saw another review on Yelp showing the vastly overcooked calamari that looked just like ours! The coconut prawns were marginally better, but still tasted like they had been cooked in oil that had seen better days, as did our combination fried prawn, halibut and chips meals. The Jack's Chips were barely warm upon arrival and the prawns were left off one of our 4 orders of this same combination dish. The clam chowder and the vegetable chowder looked remarkably the same, both were lukewarm and inedible and we think there were clams in what was supposed to be the vegetable-only chowder. Two of our group ordered the surf and turf special, only to be told that they had run out of the turf (filet mignon in this case) . . . and yet it was only about 6:45 p.m. They offered to "upgrade" one of them to a ribeye . . . I'm certainly no beef expert, but I've never before heard of a ribeye being an upgrade to a filet mignon? Once again, although the beef was at least passable, the Jack's Chips were actually cold on the surf and turf plates. Our server made comments at one point about the kitchen being very small and that it was very difficult to get a larger table's orders all done at the same time, so it looks like in addition to many quality control issues, they overshot on restaurant capacity versus kitchen size too. I can't imagine what they plan to do with the second room that has additional tables that doesn't appear to be currently in use . . . maybe expand the kitchen a bit? So many things wrong here that I just can't see going back anytime soon. read more
