Urban American restaurant that's similar to an Urban Plates or former Plutos (before they closed). Had good experience every time I came here. I would recommend placing food orders through their website or in person, rather than through Grubhub. I tried that once and realized it's more costly that way, even if you're just picking it up in person. Recommendations: Salads are the best in my opinion because of the level of quality and freshness. Lots of toppings to choose from and it's usually pretty filling. The salad dressing tastes good quality and fresh as well. My personal recommendation as a protein add-on would be the buffalo chicken strip. The trip tip sandwich was good too but again, my preference/recommendation is the salads. They also have sides that you can add--a personal favorite is the cranberry sage stuffing. I came here for lunch and usually have an above average experience. I'll start with the food. I ordered the Tri-tip plate which includes the Tri-Tip and two sides. The mashed potatoes were good but that's hard to mess up. The mac and cheese was bland and the Tri-tip was dry. Nothing a little hot sauce couldn't fix. To top it all off there was 2 hairs in my food, which makes sense because none of the staff were wearing hats or hairnets when working in the kitchen. I placed an order, went and picked it up, and when I got home I noticed that there were multiple issues with the order. I tried to call to rectify the issues but the manager was unwilling to assist. I have ordered the Salmon Plate which is labeled as 6oz on the website. However, when I got home and opened it up, the piece was broken up and very tiny. I weighed it on our food scale and it came out to just a little over 3oz. The manager claimed it's pre-portioned out as 6oz before it is cooked. However, fish does not reduce to 50% in size when cooked. 2. The create your own salad was much smaller than normal and was missing one of the salad dressings. I mentioned the missing salad dressing to the manager, to which she replied that it was included and that I was wrong and thus lying. I have never experienced this level of poor service at Jacks. Jack's is turning into just another fast food place. Ordered take out. the food was ready when I showed up; 5 min after the set time. The chicken sandwich was fresh tasting. the Mediterranean veggie was bland and all the flavors of the veggies ran together; it tasked like tofu with sauce. The kids meal grilled cheese was great; I had a bite and my 3yr old loved it. The fruit that came with it tasted like it leftovers from the previous day or two - not fresh at all. Jacks is not worth the expense. I will just walk into the supermarket next time and order from the deli. I'm always surprised by how crowded Jack's gets given the huge variety of good food there is in Davis. Today I ordered a turkey club sandwich. I know turkey can often be dry, and thought that the avocado would help with dryness, but I was disappointed to find a tiny, tiny amount of avocado. Additionally, the "sourdough" roll was pretty sad. Their fries and mac & cheese did look good though, so maybe I will try that next time. Ambling through Safeway in a hungover daze, my friend and I almost-- ALMOST-- settled for something blasé from the deli, when we serendipitously remembered, "hey, there's a whole plaza out there with real restaurants", and somehow wandered into Jack's when we meant to go to Dos. If anything, it was a good mistake. Customer service is super chill and friendly. Since the menu's only veggie sandwich was the portobello mushroom burger, I asked about non-salad vegetarian options (because who wants a salad when hungover??) and the girl behind the counter gladly informed me that any meat patty can be replaced with portobello mushroom. Did not expect the expansion of options ^_^ She was so kind answering my questions while I was taking my time to decide. When asking if the mango salsa would taste weird with mushroom instead of chicken, the guy next to her stopped mid-sandwich to reassure me that my substitution would probably be fine flavor-wise and gave some other recommendations. They were both really thoughtful! Appreciated that the staff were able to accommodate for non-meat diets and so eager to help me out. Service was quick even when business was moderately busy. I don't think we waited for more than 10 minutes. The sandwich itself: pretty good! Not a lot of sandwich shops offer veggie options so I was pleasantly surprised. The sauce went well with the mushroom and the veggies are fresh. The bread wasn't too crumbly or dry, nor did it get overly soggy. Most places have portobello mushroom in one piece, though, and this one was in little slices so it was just sliding all over the place when slightly squeezed. I specifically remembering ordering the Cajun Chicken, since I was interested in the mango salsa, but somehow my sandwich ended up having blue cheese in it instead of swiss... Jack's is located in the marketplace in North Davis specializing in burgers and salads. You find your own table, order at the counter, and wait for your food to be made. I personally had the mushroom burger (they called it a veggie burger) and it was okay. The reason why I say that is because for the price I paid, I would have wanted my buns toasted so that when I ate the other half of my burger it wouldn't have been so soggy. They give an adequate portion of mushroom but it's pretty messy since it's sliced up. Pieces tend to fall out onto my place. I also had the urban fries and I really enjoyed them. The pricing for that in my opinion is a lot more fair compared to the burger. The salad looks pretty good tho, next time I would come for the fries and maybe have a salad if I am ever back in town. read more

Jacks is a solid place for lunch with a lot of options. My parents are big fans so my rating reflects that. My recommendation would be to either get a make your own salad (ask for light dressing because mine was swimming today) or something that comes with fries. The fries are up there in my book. I love their marinated mushrooms and roasted bell pepper salad toppings. Additionally I appreciate the ambiance and the option for indoor and outdoor dining. It's not too loud and it's a good place for a conversation on a sunny day. I have a few buts... awhile back my parents received food poisoning from their takeout dinner during the lockdown. They weren't upset about it but it did happen. Yes, I'll give their food a five star, but the service sucks! Who ever the server is, she is racist and rude. The girl who take the order give me a cup when I finish ordering, and I just grabbed some soda, and later on there's a server who come I'm just throw the plate on the table and tell me that I'm using a water cup to put soda, and everybody around me are having their drink in the same cup, but she only pick on me because I'm not White. And she saying it out loud want to charge me another few bucks for the drink, trying to get attention from everybody else. Last time I came here, at the beginning of last summer, I was impressed with how good all the food. Which as a result made this time a letdown. I don't know if it was just a matter of poor ordering on our part or if they changed cooks. Pros: Arnold Palmer, 805 beer, garlic fries, and a dog-friendly patio. Cons: Grilled Portobello sandwich, California Cheese Steak, and the mac and cheese. I ordered the Grilled Portobello sandwich with a side of mac and cheese, and made myself an Arnold Palmer with the strawberry lemonade and mango ice tea at the soft drink station. The Arnold Palmer was perfect, the ice tea is unsweetened, and the lemonade is just barely sweet. If you try to recreate this and are used to sweet tea you may need to add a few splashes of soda. The grilled portobello was a little bland. The portobello mushrooms themselves would benefit from a better marinade. The onion was cut into large unappetizing chunks, which is unfortunate as the grilled onion did have a lovely sweet flavor, but due to the size of the pieces, the consistency was not good for that of a sandwich- too soft almost slimy. This problem could be completely eliminated by chopping the grilled onion into smaller pieces. The aioli was the best part of the sandwich and the only part with any decent flavor. The mac and cheese also lacked flavor. Mac and cheese should be packed with flavor from the cheese, this was really more of pasta in a white sauce with just a hint of cheese, disappointing. My husband ordered the California Cheese Steak with garlic fries and an 805 beer. The California Cheese Steak was mainly one large chunk of dry meat, the garlic fries were by far the best thing we ordered. read more

Came here on a very hot summer day and craved a salad. So I ordered the Spicy buffalo chicken salad. I was surprised at how much I liked it! It had nuts, bleu cheese, apples and spicy chicken. The California Cheese Steak sandwich may be the worst sandwich I've had in several years. I eat EVERY lunch out and try to bounce around Davis and Woodland mostly. The tri tip was undercooked, the "cheese" was some sort of dreadful mini slice.... and the veggies were too few and too badly flavored. How do you screw up veggies? They did. Hi - I wouldn't have bothered to write a review if I didn't feel that Britney either needs retraining or to lose her job. I'm actually writing this review in hopes to reach an owner or upper management. The person "Britney" ( is she really the manager???) is a snarky, rude unfriendly person who literally hates her job and will tear down establishment in the wake of her unhappiness. I watched her snapped annoyed at an sweet elderly gentleman in front of me when he asked how long the place it had been open. The answer from Britney was ten years and an eye roll when he turned his back.... At any rate they messed up our to go order (no big deal) and the only reason I went back is because my mom is recovering from cancer and wanted extra gravy and it is my life mission to make sure she enjoys every second of her life from here on out. I guess They got confused and Instead they gave no gravy to her and my dads turkey dinners and then poured a river of gravy all over my food which I asked for no gravy because I have celiac disease. I went back with $10-$15 in my pocket to give them as I have been in the service industry for 30+ years. All I was requesting was some containers of gravy and maybe some mashed potatoes without gravy a ( I could wash off the gravy on the steak). That seems reasonable right?! And I was going to throw them a fat tip. BUT instead Britney said I was going to get none of that and I had to bring back the food to show them that they actually gave me something other than what I ordered. I stopped and said "you would rather have me drive home twice and back here three times rather than give me $1 of mashed potatoes". And she shrugged and said "yea". Stupid even for someone like her. She really must have wanted to see me again instead of all of us moving on with our lives. Needless to say - I was not happy. So I brought back the effing food as requested. She told me "relax" which is ironic being she escalated the situation. I guess she wanted a minute to figure out how she could screw me over the most. So - I got some cash back but she couldn't give a refund on the rest of it because "it had already been processed" . She was self important and laughed often like it was a joke to her. Which is an interesting choice when a quick apology trying to make it right would have avoided what's about to happen........So tomorrow I'm going to call the credit card company and get that money back. (Pssst - it's called a chargeback for anyone who knows how to work the POS system which she didn't. Furthermore- those disgusting black gloves she was wearing (what I'm guessing all day) are an actual health violation. I watched handle money then food without washing her hands or changing gloves. At any rate - I'm not going to rest until I get a response, or am satisfied that that place gets exactly what it deserves. . If a customer came back unhappy- not only would I give a refund, but either replace the items and least of all give a gift card so they give another chance. That seems like a better path than basically calling the customer a liar, ruining their experience and also wasting their time. If I'm going to pay $25 for two salads...it better be amazing. Sadly this is not the case with Jack's. I usually get a plated meal... but after scoping out the side dishes, which looked less than appetizing and displeasing to the eye, I opted for a buffalo chicken salad. My husband got his standard steak salad. first he noticed that his steak salad looks to have almost half as much steak as in previous times that he's ordered it. Then when he tries it, he realizes the dressing tastes a bit different but can't quite figure it out. He's not pleased. And my Buffalo chicken salad, well clearly you can see, it's just an absolutely terrible salad for the price. Two tiny Frozen pieces of chicken strips with not enough sauce. Giant chunks of apples, rather than cut up invite size pieces. And a very watered-down salad dressing that made every piece of lettuce extremely soggy. Definitely disappointed. We ordered the spicy chicken sandwich, Tri-Tip sandwich and a family size order of urban fries. The spicy chicken sandwich was so good. Super moist chicken with the right amount of crunch. The spicy bit of the sandwich was flavorful. Not extremely hot, so if you are expecting something flaming hot I would suggest keep looking. The Tri-Tip sandwich was amazing. The meat was perfectly cooked and seasoned to perfection! The fries..... oh man. The fries! The fries are BOMB!!!!!!! Alright alright, I've only visited here twice but it's enough to bump it down to one star. I came in for dinner with four other friends who each ordered different things, and out of five of us, only one was satisfied with his food (thus the one star out of five). One star for the urban fries: crispy and what not. I don't like cheese, let alone blue cheese, but I was able to eat this no prob bob. Chicken & fries: three of the most paltry pieces of poultry you have ever seen with a pile of fries. Honestly, it was mostly batter and my friend described it as having an unpleasing texture. I didn't want to know what that meant, so I didn't try them. I like mc nuggets better. Another two friends got two different sandwiches, neither of which was memorable and so they are not going into this review. Furthermore, for $7-8 a pop, you think you'd get a side with it! Nay! All you get is one bland, regular sized sandwich. I got the Santa Fe salad, which was bland at best. The dressing was waaay sweet, and luckily I ordered it with dressing on the side, or else it might have been a pile of wet and sweet lettuce. Blergh. Side note, the interior of the restaurant is always very cold! Great for those hot summer days, for the first 10 minutes or so. I had to get a jacket to wear because it was so cold. Most likely not ever probably not going back to Jack's unless it's for urban fries, but even so I won't go out of my way to get them. The food is made with fresh ingredients. Fruits and vegetables look locally sourced. Everything looks and tastes amazing. You leave feeling satisfied. If your looking for a fresh salad made your way look no further. Sandwiches look amazing but I'm gf . Sometimes I order the chicken plate with mashed potatoes and grilled veggies, I just hold the gravy. The only downer is the staff. The peeps can be rude, stuck up brats. This is a total bummer. The quality of food here is amazing, esp for the price. I've gotten the lemon chicken here and wow, the chicken was super juicy and flavorful! I got a side of garlic mashed potatoes and the veggies that they had available. I'm very picky about the chicken that I eat, and this is quite possibly some of the best (most tender) I've had. I don't like they they cut all meats with the same knife. I don't eat red meats and asked them to use a new/different knife and they stated that there was only one knife they they wipe with a wet rag between cutting various meats. Hubs and it stopped in here for lunch one afternoon/ early evening in the fall.. We walked in and went to the counter where you order food then find a seat.. They have salads or make your own salad, sandwiches, plates, fries & chicken strips, sides and drinks on thier menu.. We ordered Garlic Fries extra crispy fries as a appetizer to start, hubs got 2 Sides Regular Mashed Potatoes with Turkey Gravy, Sautéed Veggies and I ordered the Banh Mi Sandwich with the Picked Radish in the side.. Food came out at decent time, garlic fries were perfect for me, the banh mi sandwich was good but more westernized then the real kind.. Sautéed veggie were ok a tad more cook then I like they were a tad soggy, mashed potatoes with turkey gravy was good and the turkey was good as well..
