I met a friend here for lunch today and it exceeded my expectations! From the warm, friendly service, to the super fresh fish and delicious Asian-inspired dishes, we enjoyed a leisurely meal together in their cozy back dining room. We started with sharing a bottle of hot sake, then enjoyed their palette-cleansing sesame cucumber salad that comes with every meal. My friend got their pho as her main dish, and I ordered their chicken tom yum soup. Both were rich and flavorful, and very filling. For sushi, I ordered hamachi nigiri and toro nigiri. They do not have an automated call system, so they took my number down and *called me personally* when a table opened up. We showed up at the ambiance was incredible. Jae is behind the counter slicing up beautiful pieces of Sashimi. There's a birthday party and we all do sake shots together. They all toast to Jae, an indication of how much his presence means to this place. Then we got our food. Each piece of sashimi and the Ootoro nigiri were INCREDIBLE. We got two of their specials (forgot the names...tuna on crispy rice and a maki roll with salmon and pickled daikon), which were a perfect balance of flavors and exceptionally fresh. As I enter the establishment, I saw the face of the waiter which seemed pained in a way. I asked if I could order take out and he immediately looked back to the Sushi chef for confirmation. At that moment the chef literally stated in an angered manner "You see, didn't I tell you to cut the light off?!" This not only made me feel immediately uncomfortable, but it also produced the same effect to the remaining customers who were seated at the Sushi bar. A female cook attempted to remedy the occurrence, but for me it was a bit too late. By the way, I entered the restaurant some time before its indicated closed time and still was met with this type of service. We asked about chicken wings and the told them that we didn't want them multiple times, the were reprimanded by one of the waiters that we need to inform them earlier if we don't want something, we then waited a full 35 minutes after ordering to get out sushi, after that the power proceeded to go out and after waiting for a while for someone to talk to us we approached the staff and asked if we could have a check and leave they proceeded to write out our totals which took another 25 minutes Personally do not think the situation was handled well at all and the staff was very rude to us about normal requests, will never be coming back here read more

Sushi was excellent - we had four different rolls and each was so good! Salmon sashimi was also very good. Portion size of Vietnamese veggie wraps was very good, but flavor was nothing special. Shrimp with candied walnuts and lemon cream sauce was outstanding! Pad Thai was very flavorful, too. We sat in a cozy backroom space - not crowded at all on a Sunday night. No sense of warmness when you walk in. Some dude who looked like they just graduated high school CHEWING GUM picked up two small bowls of pickled cucumber (which taste rotten by the way, some weird wasabi flavor maybe) and took us to the back, right in front of empty alcohol boxes. One of the chefs was coughing onto clean plates as we walked in, didn't even cover. This entire place smells like chlorox. Entire place is dingy with dirty menus, half cleaned plates and silverware, and service is below mediocre. Prices are all over the place. Just wanted to leave immediately. read more

I'm in love with Jae's in a conceptual sense--an offering of selections from East Asian countries--but the execution is lacking, particularly on the Japanese front. It really is a mixed bag in terms of quality, with top-notch salmon sashimi juxtaposed against rolls with fish in them that seems far from fresh. The food is good on average, with knockouts offsetting disappointments, but I'd rather it be consistently good. Service is lacking, starting with Jae himself, who is cold to some of the customers seated in front of him, and waiters who never make it back to the tables to check in. You can likely do better, but not in the immediate neighborhood, which is what likely keeps Jae's alive. read more

Beware. We ordered from Grubhub for delivery, and food came 2 hours later. When I called the restaurant, I learned that Grubhub is using the restaurant without its permission. Basically, Grubhub would have a driver go to the restaurant and place an order, then another one would pick up the order. I have been coming to Jae's since 2009. The owner Jae works at the restaurant every day. There is very low employee turnover at the restaurant. The food quality is the best of the best made by talented Sushi Chefs (All-Stars). Depending on what seafood is in season the sushi rolls can have different items in them. The prices go from not that expensive, Chicken Teriyaki, to the more pricier specialty sushi. Happy Hour is from 5-7pm, M-F and has very good specials. The atmosphere is very low key and easy going. This place is a pretty a solid Asian Fusion restaurant. I usually steer clear of pan-Asian establishments, preferring a more homogenous dining experience, but Jae's is fairly close to home and has a really good happy hour so we wind up eating there fairly regularly. The menu is pretty Japanese-focused, with a handful of dishes from other Asian countries. There is something for everyone here, making it a good place for families and a decent place for a casual date, provided you go at the right time. It gets pretty busy and loud during the rush and the layout of the interior is kinda weird. It's not a good place for a romantic date, but would work well for a "getting to know you" dinner or casual outing with friends. If you have the option, sit at the sushi bar. It's the best seat in the house and definitely the most visually appealing. The sushi rolls are the highlight of the menu for my husband and I, plus they have nice selection of sake. Servers are all very nice and will make modified chopsticks for your little ones, if you need them. read more

I've been coming to this restaurant for years now, and it is hands down my favorite restaurant in seattle. Feng, one of the waitresses is extremely nice and lights up the room! Definitely adds to the restaurant experience. We also enjoy sitting at the sushi bar sometimes we're Jae normally is and chatting with him. I've never had a bad meal here. The sushi is usually my go to, but they also have excellent pad Thai, and soups. If you like sashimi, definitely get some here.
