Hidden teriyaki and sushi gem in magnolia village. I drive out of my way to come here. Always clean tidy nice portions and reasonable price.

Cute and quaint sushi restaurant. It's very unassuming - but they've got a huge variety of sushi and non-sushi options. I love the baked salmon sushi - it's unexpectedly warm as it has a slab of freshly baked salmon on top of the sushi. The sushi portions are on the smaller size - in case you've got a big appetite, you might want to order 2 dishes. Highly recommend!

Very so-so. Old and tired atmosphere. Weird set up to order food in...the menus are super small type and taped to these tables that are below waist level and oddly out in front of the cash register. No items have explanation and when asked about ingredients the staff member didn't name all the ingredients in the dish accurately. Tables needed to be wiped down and I had to ask for a napkin to wipe the table on my own. Good amount of food and nice presentation, and the food was served nicely hot - but absolutely drenched in sauce...got the sesame chicken and it was absolute out of balance between chicken and vegetables. Would maybe come back to try the sushi but doubt it. Salad wasn't listed as an item in the dish but was a nice bonus. Also, all the "Crab" items are imitation - that's really bad.

The food is where it all went south. We ordered ginger beer and the ginger beer wasn't true ginger beer (it was a soft drink with ginger flavor and almost 50 grams of sugar + all sorts of gums). Calamari 1/5 - this was one of the worse, soggy Luke warm calamari that tasted reheated. It sort of tasted like it was in a Tupperware for a while or cooked in rancid oil. Unagi Roll 1/5 - this is actually the worse roll I've ever had. The rice was like warm, the whole roll was mushy and tasted like spoiled fish oil. I've never had to spit out a sushi roll before and this was a first for me. The roll was cut Into super uneven pieces, some were unusually large and some super thin. It was so bad that unfortunately we had to send it back. Nigiri 3/5 - We got a selection of nigiri and it was better than the roll but still you can tell the fish quality just wasn't there. The salmon belly, toro, and others are supposed to taste buttery, but instead they were super stringy. I think the fish was fresh, but the quality was meh. We will not be returning here unfortunately and it's wild to see the amount of positive reviews.

Since my birthday fell on a Wednesday, we were lucky enough to have Chef Shiro Kashiba himself behind the counter preparing and serving our meal. The entire experience was incredible. The service was organized, attentive, and made the evening feel truly special. Chef Shiro Kashiba is knowledgeable, entertaining, and incredibly passionate about his craft. With every course, from salmon and tuna to white fish, mackerel, shellfish, and eel, he explained how each piece should be eaten, where the fish was sourced, and even shared personal stories from his career. It felt like he was telling a story through every piece of sushi he prepared, making the experience both captivating and unforgettable. Chef Shiro Kashiba is truly inspiring. It was also wonderful to see that everyone seated at our counter had traveled from out of state just to experience his omakase, which speaks volumes about his reputation. This was, without a doubt, the best sushi omakase experience I've ever had. The fish was exceptionally fresh, and every bite was thoughtfully prepared. The flavors were unlike any sushi I've had before and gave me a whole new appreciation for how extraordinary sushi can be when it's crafted by a chef with such deep knowledge and experience. I would absolutely love to come back again. I left feeling completely satisfied and fulfilled, yet hungry for more of this amazing sushi experience. Went there 3 months ago and enjoyed the usual amazing happy hour in the restaurant - which has always been a big draw for them. Went back last night and was told they recently changed it to in the bar only, but the website still stated it was in the whole restaurant. We would have gone elsewhere had we known this. We asked twice about it and were told the website just hadn't been updated yet - no "I'm so sorry" or make it right response/offer was received. Was very disappointed and will not be back.

I will be dreaming of this until my next visit to Seattle. We also had a bento box which included tuna with jalapeño salmon, sashimi, rice, tofu, and green beans and tomatoes and calamari. We also ordered the Seattle roll, which was delicious. We shared all these items between the two of us and it was more than enough food. Reasonably priced for a sushi lunch. The staff was friendly, helpful, and efficient! I was here probably 10 to 15 years ago and I didn't realize it until I walked in the door. I hope it's not that long before I get back again.

I love this concept. I'm not much of a roll person bc it's always pricey and then you have to eat all 6-8 pieces, so this was right up my alley. We loved it so much, we came here 2x when we were in Seattle. And even our first time we had to get seconds. All the sushi from the beginning are rolls, and near the end they are nigiris. So save some space for the good stuff at the end. The first time during lunch hour, they kept restocking the sushi, and they even had bluefin tuna nigiri at the very end! Score!! I'm more of a nigiri person so I got half rolls and half nigiri. Of course this isn't like fancy restaurant sushi, but more of like casual dining sushi and bc there were so many people, it was fresh bc it was a high turnover. Sushi quality was decent. Reminded me of just like an AYCE sushi quality. You won't get sick, but don't expect Jiro Dream of Sushi quality here. lol. The other time we went was during dinner of 1 hour before they close, the selection wasn't as good as they didn't have bluefin tuna nigiri, but still worth it and didn't cost us an arm and leg to get sushi. I hope someone catches this concept in San Diego! It's so clever. Love it and would love to come back again.

The popular sashimi plate had sockeye salmon, scallops, king salmon, yellowtail, snapper, and shima aji. 3-4 slices per fish so total about 20ish pieces for $ 75 dollars. Also included salmon roe. Ask which fish is in the plate since it seems to change. Service was good. They serve distilled water which is appropriate for eating raw dish so you actually taste the fish and not the tap water. The star of the night was the miso black cod. Soft buttery and flavorful. Just enough miso to bring out the sweetness of the fish. Some may find it not flavorful enough. It depends on if you are looking for fish flavor or seasoning flavor in my opinion. The only down side is that it's a fatty cut of fish so by the third piece it can be a bit heavy. Ended up cutting the fat with a bit of lemon toward the end and using the shredded pink diakon. For the price of $ 17 dollars, it is quite a good deal as other spots in the area would charge more or give less.

Fine--I decided to stay and dine in instead, and was seated at the bar. What happened next left me genuinely disappointed. This was supposed to be a birthday meal, and instead it turned into an experience that made me question why I had ever wanted to eat here in the first place. The irony is that Maneki has such an important place in Seattle's history. The owner is an old friend of my late mother. I deliberately said nothing about that because I wanted no special treatment whatsoever. I wanted to walk in as an ordinary customer and be treated accordingly. Unfortunately, what I got was an experience so underwhelming that I left feeling that the $100 gift certificate had bought me very little besides frustration. A restaurant can trade on its history for only so long. Being old and famous is not a substitute for making a customer feel welcome and valued--especially when that customer is spending a $100 gift certificate for his birthday. One star. I expected much more from Maneki, and I will not be returning.
