I have been driving past this restaurant for years and today decided to stop in. The place is nice and pretty clean, the food is pretty bland. The chips were a bit stale and the salsa needed a lot of salt. The tacos are big (real big), but do not have much taste to them. First time at this place. Never again! Picadillo plate was just horrible in taste. Did not look like the picture on the menu at all. Only ate the rice and beans which did not have any taste to it. Stopped in today 01-29-2023, first the server spilt my water on my friend and they cared more about the floor then the water all on her jeans and arm of her sweater. Then we ordered the huevos rancheros plate with barbacoa and the barbacoa looked like it had been reheated a few times too many plus it tasted terrible. So we ordered menudo. It was worse. No flavor When we told the female manager she copped an attitude. When we went up to pay, because we still wanted to pay for the horrible food and service, the main manager didn't seem to care. We went last night for dinner. Service was slow. Waiters didnt even know which table they were assigned to. We sat in front of the drink station so we could over hear them bickering of which table belonged to who and how many they had assigned then were confused. Our waitress didnt check on us after our food came out or refilled our drinks ever!!! She didnt even tell us where or how to pay even after walking by several times and clearly seeing our plates were empty and we were sitting there with arms crossed. We also ordered fajitas for two which was more for ONE. One tiny side of charro beans that had like 6 beans and nothing but liquid. My son had a bean and cheese taco that tasted like straight up powdered comino. 1 star is me being extremely generous. Our bill was $32 for poor quality, small portion and extremely poor service. We just ate dinner at the Bandera Rd location and couldn't be happier! The food was fresh! Hot! Yummy! I had the Jalapeno Plate, husband had the San Antonio Plate. Carne guisada was tender, puffy taco was perfect, cheese enchiladas were fresh and cheesy! Salsa was hot! Our server was Tristan and he was the right amount of attentive and incredibly polite. After a long wait, the waitress refilled sweet tea instead unsweet tea, and a few mistakes on the order. The food was average for a Mexican restaurant. The salsa tasted fresh and homemade but the tortillas for the breakfast tacos were cold. The coffee is strong and the Barbacoa was good, not too greasy. The carne guisada was not very good and when we ordered a bacon, eggs and cheese taco, we got a bean, egg and cheese taco instead. Clean and reasonably priced. Food is well prepared with a spicier salsa. Queso has a grilled cheese creamy taste, not spicy but a very cheesy flavor. Most of the food isn't very spicy but does have a different blend of spices. Not crowded in the evening time when we visited. With kids there isn't much to keep the young ones busy (no crayons or activities). More of a adult oriented restaurant. For 10 dollars a plate, this is a good place for a meal. We wanted to try Jalapeños restaurant since we love Mexican food and Helotes doesn't have a huge variety close by to choose from. There was a lot of options on the menu. I opted for the torta with fries and my hubby chose the "San Antonio" plate. Here's our take on it: The pros: The waiters were friendly. Chips and salsa were served immediately upon seating. Great chips, hot and crispy. The salsa was a little vinegar forward for my taste, but overall decent. The drinks (ice tea) were served in a large glass with lots of ice and refilled twice. The restaurant was clean and so were the restrooms. Our dinner was very reasonably priced: around $20 for the both of us. The seasoning on the beef fajita torta was good. The Cons: My beef fajita torta was cold inside. Also, the menu stated that the torta came with creme but it was mayo inside the sandwich. The fries were okay but were not homemade, I'm guessing a frozen bag was somewhere in the kitchen. The San Antonio plate was decent, not the best food nor the worst. The beans were seasoned well but were scorched in certain parts. The music was really loud, to the point that we could barely have a conversation. There were two tables that were not cleared through the entire hour that we were there. The waiters had time to bus the table but didn't, which may just be a training issue. The most important con was the safety issue. There are two doors in the restaurant, one to enter the restaurant and one on the dining side. The dining room door is now fully blocked by a booth against it and locked. The entrance door had one panel locked and one panel open, which I'm sure goes against any fire code. All in all, it was an okay experience and we would try a different menu option again, provided that they unlock both panels to the front door. read more

I only went in for a to go order. I can't imagine dining in. The first impression is not very inviting. Hand written sign everywhere. What you can't do - sign after sign. "To go orders must be to go" What if I change my mind and decide to dine in. "To go cups extra charge." "No outside food or drink." The restaurant was very hot and very small. I ordered 3 tacos to go, nothing out of the ordinary. I added bacon to one of the tacos and was charged. But no bacon. I won't be going back or recommending. read more

Go to this restaurant about 3 times a week with my father. It's our breakfast spot. Always get country sausage and egg tacos with coffee and Verde salsa the hot one. This morning we went for breakfast. I opted for an asada mini taco plate that came with a bowl of beans. The mini tacos were kinda greasy but not bad. What i had a really hard time with were the bowl of beans. I bit into not one, but two bones. One was the size of a toddlers knuckle. Disgusting and rather not safe. I gave our waitress the bones and relayed to her that a child could easily choke on them. She told me it was because they use pork in the beans. Thats fine but does not account for bones...in the beans! She basically shrugged it off and walked away. Her tip shrugged and walked away too. There will not be any further visits. read more

Wednesday November 9th 2016 i was feeling pretty sick with morning shake because I did not eat anything before I left home. I decided to stop to have 2 corn tortillas tacos with potatoes to help with my shake so I walked in the Bandera, Helotes Jalapeño restaurant. As I stood to the counter a woman walked in front of me texting on her cell phone. I was like okay.... She did not even say good morning does not even acknowledged me. She continued texting from the kitchen to behind the counter her nose on her phone as she giggled as she received text and continue having her texts conversation. She finally put her phone away. And I thought okay she is now going to take my order. Nope she goes on very slowly to the end of the counter and grabs folded silverware. Walked right in front of me and still does not acknowledge me. I was like again what the heck I must be in a twilight zone. I must be transparent. I do not even know where she put her silverware because she started to make coffee as I waited. My thoughts was well maybe her job is not to take orders. Who knows. Than she goes by the kitchen and go on to have conversation with the kitchen staffs. At that point probably 7-10 minutes later I was about to leave. She turned around walked in front of me and say good morning. I was in shock she did take orders. She totally ignored me. At that point I was pist and I did not want to order food from this place but needed to have something in my body before my shake got worse or passed out. That morning service sucks!! Putting me in a not happy mood resulting when we discussed for food for our monthly meeting the next day I decided NOT TO ORDER FROM THEM!! and decided to get Sea Island instead. Actually it was a much better choice that everyone enjoyed. My recommendation to owner is to band the use of cellphone while at work as well training etiquette to your employees. My husband and I went there for breakfast this morning, Tristan was our server, he was nice and polite and we thought on the ball. He took our order on the hand held computers they have and then returned to check on us. My husband and I were talking and weren't really paying attention until Tristan came back again for what we realized was the fourth time again still telling us there was a mistake in the kitchen and they were making us fresh food and it would be out in just a minute, at that point we noticed that several/most of the tables around us that had come in after we had already had their orders, at that time my husband said let me know when five minutes are up. Two minutes into the count, Tristan brought the the tortillas and the steak knife for my husband's Steak and Eggs, six minutes into the count he brings out an order, my order was correct, however he brought my husband Migas, when we questioned it, Tristan seemed confused, at that point we did leave a tip for the server and got up to pay for our drinks. He was extremely apologetic but then still tried to charge us for the meal we waited over thirty minutes for and not all of it was correct and we did not eat.. The owner never walked into the kitchen as we walked to the register, never addressed us at all. I won't be going back! read more
