The food comes out fast and hot....have eaten breakfast here 4 times in last month or so and was holding off on my review to ensure consistency as it seemed others' reviews were mixed from several months ago.... I can say that I would highly recommend Jalapeños for breakfast and am looking forward to trying lunch and dinner entrees soon as well. My husband and I went there for breakfast this morning, Tristan was our server, he was nice and polite and we thought on the ball. He took our order on the hand held computers they have and then returned to check on us. My husband and I were talking and weren't really paying attention until Tristan came back again for what we realized was the fourth time again still telling us there was a mistake in the kitchen and they were making us fresh food and it would be out in just a minute, at that point we noticed that several/most of the tables around us that had come in after we had already had their orders, at that time my husband said let me know when five minutes are up. Two minutes into the count, Tristan brought the the tortillas and the steak knife for my husband's Steak and Eggs, six minutes into the count he brings out an order, my order was correct, however he brought my husband Migas, when we questioned it, Tristan seemed confused, at that point we did leave a tip for the server and got up to pay for our drinks. He was extremely apologetic but then still tried to charge us for the meal we waited over thirty minutes for and not all of it was correct and we did not eat.. My daughter ordered a breakfast plate. Came out perfect and hot. She really enjoyed it. I ordered the chicken enchiladas. They were OK. needed more chicken in each enchilada and a little more flavor. If you're looking for authentic Mexican food, not TexMex, this is the spot! The service is good, not great because they just opened and improving their waitstaff service every day. (Cut them a little slack. It will get better!). My family and I went there for the 1st time on Sunday, 1/17, the service was a bit slow but the food definitely made up for it. I rarely take to online review sites to comment on a bad restaurant experience, but our dinner last night was so bad that I thought it worth warning others about the place -- Jalapeno's on Bandera. I ordered fish tacos (fish grilled with no sauce), My daughter ordered a quesadilla, and my son ordered a torta. Neither my son nor I wanted the fries that came with our meals, so our server, Tristan, told us they could substitute beans. That was just fine with us. The kids wanted some queso as an appetizer, so we also ordered that, too. Tristan seemed to be on the ball and polite. All was well until the food started arriving. The entrees came out before the queso. I told the server never mind the queso because we'd ordered it as an appetizer. He told me it was on the ticket already and could not be removed. (That was a new one on me.) My fish tacos came with nothing but fish on them. I asked the server where the avocado and cabbage were. He said he would get them. He came back with some sliced avocado (good) and some lettuce. I asked him for the cabbage. He said that "cabbage" was Mexican for lettuce. (He really did. You couldn't make that up!) I went to stir my "charro" beans up and there were cut-up hot dog wieners in them. Really??? Both of my adult children tried the queso and said it was basically Rico's canned cheese. Nothing we ate was worth eating. They charged $5 for the horrible queso, and they charged us $2 each for the beans they so graciously allowed us to "substitute" for our fries. Our whole experience was lousy, honestly. I spoke to the manager on the way out. She just nodded and seemed to think wieners in charro beans and "cabbage" being Mexican for lettuce were completely normal. Oh well, needless to say, we will not be going back there again. read more

The establishment is fairly new and a great addition to the Helotes/Bandera area! I'm a fat kid at heart who loves Mexican/Spanish food and get tired of the typical "TexMex" cuisine most restaurants serve in Helotes/Bandera. I have to say the food here is AWESOME, tastes great, and they have a very good selection! I'm a fan of the Al Pastor mini tacos, Aka: "Street Tacos" as some people call them. As most would know (those that like these tacos).......you'd have to take a bit of a drive to a taco truck/taco stand to get some good mini tacos if you live in Helotes/Bandera. The interior design and decor of the restaurant is very nice as well! Like most new restaurants there will initially be some minor shortcomings that could sway an individual to immediately deem this restaurant "bad", or feel compelled to write a negative review - ex: the service. The service was not the best the 1st time my family and I went to the restaurant to try it out, but since then we've gone back several times and I can honestly say it has only gotten better as each day passes. Before I place judgement on a restaurant, it's service, food, staff, decor, etc. I always give it a few tries and at different times of the day - Breakfast, Lunch, & Dinner. Any restaurant could have an "off day" or the waiter/waitress serving you could make the entire experience disappointing. Understanding that is the specific reason why I've gone back to this place several times before writing my review. Went with the family to meet some friends their for dinner on a Wednesday. Pretty busy, probably because of the newness of the joint. Ordered the Carne Asada Plate for myself. Our waiter was a bit unorganized and the place seemed a but understaffed to handle the number of customers at that time. I usually don't leave reviews but this time it has to be done. I used to love this place. I would even call in orders on my way home from work and pick up. This time however, we went in to eat. It was my 15 year old, 1 year old and myself. Now, I had been in previous times with my children and never had a problem. This time however, there was a piece of plastic in my 1 year olds food (and it was just rice and beans). I tell them and get the usual, I'm sorry, can we get you something else? That should've been my cue to leave. We stay cause I'm hungry and want my enchiladas. Guess what, our food comes out and mines COLD! I managed to choke down my taco (which was also cold) and take a couple bites of my enchilada which is ALSO COLD. I tell them and it's "do you want me to heat it up for you?" REALLY?!? By that time, I lost my appetite and I was soooo upset I let my oldest finish eating and we left. We took a chance and went against previous reviews. Glad we did. Portions are very generous, my a la mexicana was perfection with fresh veggies and purple onion (nice change up). Hubs had the machacado and said it was delicious- gave him the "machacado sweats" because he ate the whole plate. Would be 5 stars but the flour tortillas didn't taste homemade. Really wanted to like this place! So much so, I have it 3 tries. First time, we had no issues and they food was okay. Not great but decent. We decided to go and have lunch for my brother's birthday there the following week. Despite there being almost no one in the restaurant, service was slow and so was the food coming out. They royally messed up 2 of the 4 orders at the table. My brother ordered steak and shrimp and got more of a milanesa steak. Maybe it was a chopped steak. I can't be sure. It definitely was not what they advertised. Even then, I decided one more time on breakfast with my daughter. She ordered pancakes which were fine. I ordered a plate that come with tortillas. Upon open the warmer, I noticed the tortillas were ice cold almost. Almost as if they make them, put them in the 'warmer' and refrigerate them immediately after. I asked the waiter for 2 new tortillas that were warm. He brought me one. Again I asked for another and he never came back to our table. Jalapeno's is very good Tex-Mex. The menu has pictures for all the dishes which is helpful for the customers and the servers. Their refried beans and Mexican rice is a step better than the rest. So many Tex-Mex restaurants don't get this right at all Their beef fajitas are very tasty, with the meat well-marinated. The chicken breast dinner also is very tasty, covered in chipotle chili sauce and white cheese. This restaurant has only been open a few months and I'm sure there were service or kitchen issues at the beginning. There are none now. Everyone is friendly, orders come quickly and the food is very good. They have a paper menu to call in take-out orders. I did that last week and my food was ready and waiting for me 10 minutes after I called it in. There are very few restaurants actually in Helotes on the way home and this is a good option for bringing home dinner after work. I recommend it. read more

Disappointment to Helotes eateries. Seats and menus were dirty. Waitress didn't acknowledge. When I ordered a margarita and no margarita at this place. The waitress laughed at me like I was an idiot for asking for a margarita at a Mexican restaurant. My Migas came out and it had velveeta cheese melted all over the top of it. Very unfriendly waitresses to my thank you's even though I wasn't happy with the food. It got one star because my kids liked the huge pancakes. We won't be coming back. Much rather go to Las Palapas! We called the restaurant and the waitress said she remembered the order and next time we were in they would reimburse us. Next time we went the waitress remembered us but the manager said he didn't care what his waitress said unless we took the plate back he wouldn't give us credit. Not a nice guy.
