The food was great, we are regulars here. My wife and I will come for breakfast 3-4 times a week. The staff is great and Martha who regularly helps is TREMENDOUS. I have noticed the last couple of times that the A/C temperature in the dining room is really hot and uncomfortable. If the restaurant is packed then it makes it almost unbearable. Right now at 9:15 it seems as warm in the restaurant as it is outside. Don't know if the manager or owner needs to get the A/C serviced. Please fix the A/C for the customers. read more

Picked up some breakfast tacos before heading into work from here recently. Since our order was to go, we were able to place our order at the side counter. After about 5 minutes, our order came up. When we got to work, we noticed a couple of extra tacos were in the bag. The cashier had rung us up for 2 extra potato and chorizo tacos. Wasn't too big of a deal. My bean and cheese were pretty good. I especially liked the type of cheese that was used. We only got green salsa, which was a shame because my wife enjoys the red salsa from there. Our waitress was inattentive as we only saw her once after the order was brought to our table although I had asked others to speak with her for service. We ordered from the Special's Easel located as you enter the restaurant. I got the bill and asked why I was charged full price (40% more). She stated the Special was only until 10am (and that was not on the on the sign). More than that, all that came with attitude from wait staff involved! My coworkers love to get tacos from here for the office, and they are delicious every time. I came to visit the restaurant today for the 1st time in person, and the service was pretty fast. Waitress was very attentive, and customer service was superb. Food came out fast, and my tacos were as delicious as they always are. I usually order bean and cheese and the papa con chorizo. If you order some breakfast items after 11 a.m., there is an additional charge. They provide small cups of vanilla to add to your coffee, and it sweetens it perfectly. Ask for the vanilla cups if you don't automatically get them with your coffee. The salsa for the chips had the perfect spice to it, and I could not put them down. It unfortunately ruined my appetite for my actual meal, lol read more

This is one of my favorite spots for breakfast. Everything is always hot and fresh and the staff is so friendly. I love that they open at 4:30 am, so when I get the early morning taco craving I have a place to go! The kiddo really likes the pancake plate, and I've grown fond of the chorizo a la Mexicana tacos (not pictured). The bean and cheese tacos are some of the best around, and don't sleep on their puffy tacos! My only small gripe is, like a lot of taco shops in town, they aren't open for dinner. We frequent this location a lot and for the first time had the worst experience. Our server did not take our order correctly resulting in our food being incorrect. It took 3 times to get it correct. He never brought us refills, utensils or even the ranchera sauce and tortillas that came with my husband's steak RANCHERA! We had to ask for lemons at least 3-4 times, when we asked for ranch he brought us tartar sauce and laughed when we addressed the mistake. No apologies or remorse was shown. When we spoke to the lead (because ofc there is no manager to speak to) he whined and threw a fit, he never came back to our table again, and when he charged us it was done incorrectly. In looking at our itemized receipt we were charged for something we did not order as we as having a "open food" charge. When we told him the lead promised us a discount he walked away smirking and laughing because the girl who took over our bill did not give us a discount. At this point we were just fed up and needed to leave before it being a bigger deal. If possible, avoid being served by Zuriel Alvarado Caballero. If I could give this place a negative star I would! This place is one of the most rudest place I've visited in San Antonio. I'm literally standing in line in front of the cash register waiting to be helped patiently. The cashier lady there just purposely don't even acknowledge me and instead helps the guy that comes behind me when she is well aware that I was standing there for a long period of time. The city of Leon Valley says "support your community "! OK thats what my family and I try our to really do. Tias Taco Hut has good but pricey food. But we thought well we will eat there less. But that's not the problem. If you are not the right race you really are treated less of a customer. My sister stopped in last week. After the non caring waitress brought her food. Never returned to the table no matter how hard she tried to get anyones attention. She sat with an empty glass, no napkins and could of used another side. The Hispanic couple sitting next to her saw she was having trouble. So they called the waitress over in Spanish so my sister could get a chance to get help. Still ignored. The couple just told my sister sorry we tried to get her for you. I thought S.A. was like a family until my sister told me this. Wrong color for this restaurant. I was sad when she told me how she was treated. But the funny thing about this she owns a Establishment in which these people frequent often. She never thought any different of them. She is not racist to anyone. Too bad she was treated like this. It's not the first time. But it is the last. Her family will skip people who don't appreciate the business. More the likely we will not waste our time nor money. They should remember "business is word of mouth". Bottom line if you're Anglo skip this place. Well, today after church, my beloved wife asked if I wanted to stop at the store Til Tuesday on the way home. I told her I was willing to go, but did not want to. I mean, who sits in church thinking, "I want to go shopping on the way home"? Anyway, we did go and look around the store for a while. We got to her car and she asked if I was hungry. I know... stupid question. I am always hungry. She pointed to Tia's and said we should go for tacos. I was fine with that. Walking across the parking lot, we had a disagreement about whether or not we had eaten there before. I told her that as far as I could remember, the last time I was there it was a CiCis Pizza place. Regardless, I approached this visit as a first time. Now, if you have read my other reviews of Mexican restaurants, you know that I evaluate them on three things: rice, refried beans, and tortillas. As long as those three things are good, I don't really care a lot about anything else. Besides, a restaurant that can get those three things right, usually gets everything else right as well. Tia's got all three right. The beans were exactly the kind I like. The rice was the tastiest I have had in a long time. The tortillas passed the "hold it up and sniff it" and had just the right taste. They were a little thicker than some places, but I don't mind that. My wife and I both liked the salsa they served with the chips. The chips themselves were the thicker crunchy ones that I prefer. I know my family likes the super thin ones instead. Not me. I want to taste the cornchip crunchiness. My wife ordered a beef fajita burrito. She said it was really good. I was torn between two of my favorites, lengua and chicharrones, but finally went with the chicharrone plate. Good choice! They were the best chicharrones I have ever had. They were obviously made from fresh pork skins- not the dry "pork rind" ones. The sauce they were cooked in was really delicious. I don't know how other people eat Mexican food. I hold a tortilla flat in my left hand. I spread a little of the rice and beans on it. Then, I add some of whatever meat I am eating. I roll it up and eat it. Today, I did that and really enjoyed my food. My meal was only $7.99. I saw tripas tacos (another favorite) on the menu, but they were $3.19 a piece. When checking out I asked about it. The lady at the register told me it made more sense to order the tripas plate than two tacos by themselves. I told her I did not see the plate on the menu. That's because it isn't on the menu. But, they have it, if you ask for it. Believe me, on my next visit, and there will be another visit, I will ask for the tripas plate. I can already imagine my tortilla with some of those perfect beans, that amazing rice, and a few pieces of tripas. It will probably blow my mind! One last thing I want to mention. If you are a big guy, as I am, you might want to pass on the booths. They are really tight and you can not push the table towards the skinny guy sitting across from you. I love this place. The breakfast tacos are great. Chicharron con salsa, bean and cheese, country ranchero, and the migas tacos are my favorite. Their potato tacos aren't great. Each time I've ordered, the potatoes are bland and just a tad undercooked. There is a lady that does curbside who is just very unfriendly and there have been a few times we didn't get what we ordered. Now, those last couple things might make you wary but putting up with those are worth how tasty it is. Definitely try ''em out. read more

Kinda unfortunate experience today. This review is largely for the customer service although my country egg taco had eggshells in it which was a little bit of a bummer. We didn't even bother mentioning that to their staff today because there were about 3-4 other errors/problems with our order as described below. We ordered a country and egg plate and it was input wrong as a country ranchera. Everything else seemed to be input correctly although we ordered a barbacoa on corn and the kitchen messed up the order and gave it to us on flour. We weren't originally going to review this place but after we mentioned the error about the barbacoa and were told that we were still going to be charged it seemed a little silly. We were originally going to leave the taco behind but we grabbed it as we were leaving, but the fact that there was no discounting for their error seemed like a bad policy/bad management practice. The attitude about this taco left a sour taste in our mouth and is the primary reason for the review. We also weren't sure if like they were doing that because they would dock that taco off the waitress which would also be a bad policy if that is why they were so insistent. She inputted it correctly and the kitchen messed it up. It also felt like they put some negative energy on us (like we were trying to get a free thing when like they erred and made us wait and like didn't acknowledge/consider this at all, LOL). Very strange. On top of all this, we waited about 35-40 mins just to get our drinks (and we waited about 15 mins before that for the waitress came to our table who was clearly overwhelmed--not her fault) to order drinks and food at the same time. We decided to pay for what arrived (drinks and tacos) and cancel the confusion around the two plates because we were waiting another 5-10 mins on top of the error, on top of two people getting their food and the other two not. It took another 5 mins just to get a fork for my moms barbacoa taco. I want to acknowledge that it seemed like they were understaffed and more staff came to help later and it is the day after Christmas so I'm hoping this was just a bad day. But I also recommend to management if it seems like one waitress has too many tables, to reassign some midway through if they get a boost of staff. Other people were clearly getting their drinks within a min and their food at the same time as us who were there 15-20 mins after us so it seemed like front of house management was off today. read more

For far too long, San Antonio has been synonymous with Tex-Mex, which in some circles is the gastronomic equivalent of a slur. Much of the ire directed at the term is justified; heaping portions of gloopy processed yellow cheese, a preponderance of greasy fried items, and an overall air of indifference (one-note flavors and textures, sloppy plating) have all contributed to its reputation as lower-tier cuisine catering to the fattest city in America. When done well, however, Tex-Mex can be something worth celebrating. Locals know to avoid the overpriced tourist traps and corporate establishments catering to gringos, but many out-of-towners remain ignorant of San Antonio's thriving culinary scene (we have much more to offer than cheese enchiladas) or even the thousands of independent mom-and-pop Tex-Mex joints that serve delicious, homemade regional favorites with love. If you're looking for the latter, simply throw a dart at a map of San Antonio or take my recommendation and try Tia's Taco Hut, a quaint, no-frills eatery in Leon Valley that does Tex-Mex the right way. Alas, I have yet to visit Tia's Taco Hut for lunch or dinner service, so this review will focus exclusively on breakfast. Huevos rancheros is my litmus test for any Tex-Mex breakfast; if a kitchen can execute a simple plate like huevos rancheros, then it likely excels in other areas as well. Tia's rendition was a hit with a zesty, slightly chunky sauce atop two sunny side up eggs, the only option as far as this gastronome is concerned. Sides included homemade flour tortillas, crispy potato wedges a la Mexicana (jalapenos, onions, bell peppers) and rich, full-flavored refried beans tasting faintly of pork rinds (a sign of lard in the recipe -- a good thing). A heaping barbacoa breakfast plate was even better, with roughly eight ounces of moist, all-meat (or so they claim -- I don't mind eating lips and eyeballs) barbacoa, potatoes fried with chorizo (just enough grease to add flavor), two eggs, and a side of jalapeno-centric pico de gallo. My request for lime wedges was met with a knowing smile as if to say, "For a white boy, you sure know how to eat!" Indeed I do! Tia's clientele is a diverse lot of blue and white collar types, presumably locals passing by on their morning commute. On multiple occasions, I've witnessed several of Leon Valley's finest (and plumpest) gorging themselves at Tia's, so I assume management offers a discount for first responders. Of course, cops know good food, so perhaps they dine there simply because they enjoy it. This review is not as verbose as many of my others*; we all know how Tex-Mex should taste, so a longwinded review serves little purpose. In a city where this type of food is so ubiquitous (and often done poorly), however, a solid joint like Tia's deserves at least a considerate, detailed write up. The next time you find yourself craving a hearty, inexpensive breakfast in Leon Valley, look no further than the nondescript strip center at the corner of Bandera and Huebner. I look forward to trying the scrumptious looking tortas that grace Tia's lunch and dinner menus. *For those who deem my reviews overly academic, I offer this refutation: Pedantic, prescriptive grammatical constructions -- albeit anomalous and idiosyncratic in canonical elocution -- are not necessarily indicative of circumlocution, for I am not a gasconade but a magnanimous sesquipedalian.
