I LOVE this salon! The vibe is so chill and James always makes you feel welcome and special. I was out of town for several months and would not let anyone else touch my hair until I was able to come back to James Corbett Studio. Needless to say my roots were down to my ears! I went to my favorite colorist NILE. She spent 2 hours making me look beautiful again giving me the best color I've had yet. Wow. I can't believe this place has gotten such good reviews, considering that I had such a horrific experience there. I came in for a bang trim, and got James. I thought, "great, I get the owner of the salon. This'll be good." Think again. First, he didn't put any kind of smock or towel on me, so hair got all over me, and even fell into my purse on my lap (he didn't ask to take it from me). I was not asked how I wanted my bangs cut (I assumed he could tell that I liked them straight across from how they were before), and he started cutting them really unevenly. When I spoke up and said that I wanted them straight, he passed me over to some other stylist, telling her to "fix it." I was horrified. THEN, after the woman stylist tried to fix my bangs, which ended up at least two inches shorter than I wanted them, almost halfway up my forehead, she says to me: "You don't look THAT funny. It's not like people will point at you on the street and laugh." I actually couldn't believe my ears. Needless to say, I left without tipping. But honestly... what kind of place is this? What hair stylist SAYS that?? What's most annoying is that James obviously thinks he's the greatest thing in the world. He lets his dog run all over the studio and gives it wayyyy more attention than the customer. It actually sat on me while I was waiting. There was no apology from anyone. The stylists laughed at how CUTE the dog is. I am allergic to dogs. And it was ugly. read more

Her energy too is so positive and uplifting - little Budda Butta like the Budda in the salon window. Her new digs fit her. She was a Zen colorist long before she came to this salon with the Budda in the window and the peaceful backyard garden - where I took a conference call on one of these strangely warm nights while my glaze was setting. The place is so peaceful and chill and dog friendly. I came in a ball of stress and bad roots and came out peaceful and feeling fabulous. I went to Emi after a friend recommended her and she was fantastic! I have super fine hair that takes forever to grow, so I'm always paranoid a hairstylist will cut too much off. Emi listened to my concerns and gave me a FANTASTIC cut. She's also just a pleasant person in general, I was comfortable the entire time. The only reason I'm only giving 4 stars is because I wish I could have gotten a shine treatment at the same appointment but their staff is departmentalized so I would have to make an entirely separate appointment with a different stylist. I'm sure there are benefits to this, but when all you want is a clear shine treatment it's a little annoying. Otherwise this place is wonderful and I will definitely be back! Avoid this place! I've decided to do my color and a cut at James Corbett - I'm unhappy with both services! I requested ombre highlights and ended up with over bleached peace of hair on the left side of my head, other then that nothing has changed. The haircut was horrible as well. The hairdresser took 3 inches off my length! My ends look like they were chopped with an axe! It's so bad that I'm going to wait 2 weeks and then do a haircut again elsewhere. I usually cut my hair once every 2-3 month. It's just horrible. My bill was $330 and it's a joke after what they have done to my beautiful blond long hair! Depressed and sad! read more

I got several services 50% through an August promotion. It was my birthday, so I splurged. I'll write these in order from best to worst. Blowout: INCREDIBLE. TOTALLY WORTH IT. I'm not sure what my stylists name is, but she is a very cute Japanese girl. So nice and friendly. And probably the best blowout/hairstyle I've ever had!!! She spent a full hour washing and styling my hair, where it usually takes 30 minutes, even though I was only paying half price. She asked what I wanted, I told her, then I wasn't sure I was liking it so I told her to just do whatever she pleased. I'd never gotten so many compliments on my hair! Beautiful combination of straight and curly. She could have been styling a Victoria's Secret model. If you need a beautiful hairstyle and are willing to pay $50, please make an appointment with the Japanese girl at James Corbett. ($25 for $50). Organic facial: Used quite a few different creams on me, interesting different smells, all so natural and organic, they're edible! She did a fantastic job. Very nice experience. Yum. She's really nice, too. ($60 from $120) 60-minute massage: This was the first time I'd had a male massage therapist in either many years or ever, and on the one hand, his hands worked magic, but on the other it was definitely too...intimate. I'm not sure what the protocol is for nudity and touching with opposite-gender massage therapists, but I have to say he had too good a view and made too much contact for me to feel fully comfortable. Also, caressing my face is creepy, not pleasant, when it's coming from a completely stranger who is also looking at my half naked. So I would say, be very clear about your comfort zone and then you'll have a fantastic massage. ($60 from $120) Mani pedi: Do not recommend it. No massage chair. Used a bucket of water. She seemed to be in a huge rush. Not very professional. Kept misplacing things. Okay painting job but needed another layer. Not at all what I was expecting from a nice salon. Would have been better at any old Korean place. Glad I only paid half, but actually still not worth it with tip. Maybe worth $25 total. ($32.50 from $65) read more

I recently had 2 visits to the salon. With Danielle I had the Solo treatment which I now do every summer to help keep my hair from frizzing. It is a more natural alternative to keratin and works really well, though it will lighten your hair. Danielle knows her stuff and I'm so happy with the results. It lasts past the summer which is an added bonus. 2 weeks later I had an appointment with Tina to bring my brassy hair back to a more rich and natural color. She really listened and heard what I wanted. I love how it came out and I recommend her highly as the "color whisperer". She will transform you if you let her. read more

Just an incredible experience. I came to James not knowing what I wanted with my hair but I knew that I was definitely better than the out of the bottle colour that I had been sporting. James gave such a great consult that I felt like I could see exactly what he was thinking and it was the change that I was looking for. Kim! I was recently reunited with the amazing Kim at the lovely James Corbett Studio--and my hair has never looked better! Kim is an incredibly skilled stylist who is able to bring together my hair's natural texture, my personal style, and the time I have for styling (not much!) into an incredible cut. Her cuts do the work so my hair's naturally wavy texture can shine with minimal styling, which is invaluable with my busy schedule. But my hair also looks great blown out straight if I should chose. She has killer style and skills and I completely trust her with my hair. Not to mention, it is a joy to spend time in Kim's chair. She is so smart, funny, and warm. A special shoutout also to the wonderful Tina whose highlighting skills brought new life to my graying reddish hair. And James and the rest of the team were so friendly and warm. I have been to a plethora of different hair studios around the city the past five years I have lived here and let me tell you this is the best there is. I have some awful experiences with hair color (one place turned my hair orange and one tried to fix it and put bleach blonde streaks to try and fix it!) Needless to say, I was cautious to come to a salon again. However, after researching and even seeing the work they did on TV- I knew I had to try James Corbett Studio. Tina is a fabulous hair colorist! I showed her pictures of the color I liked and she did the best mix between the two I could have imagined! I showed her what my hair looked like before with my bad experiences and she worked with me to fix the screw ups from other salons. She was so pleasant, sweet to talk to and very professional. Danielle was my hair stylist and she fixed the botched job I had at the other place and made my hair healthy and stylish. While I only got a few inches cut off I will be back to see her for a more dramatic look after I get married. The overall vibe of this place is zen, relaxed and fun. The girl who washed my hair (Reena) did an outstanding job that I almost fell asleep! I would reccomond this place to anyone that wants a great cut and color and experience. I bought a massage at James Corbett through Gilt City a few months ago and finally had the opportunity to use the service. Don't let the building's scary elevator of death frighten you, it's a really cute little salon and spa. Be warned, the spa area is no frills - no changing area, no comfy robe, no showers (and the bathroom isn't exclusive to the salon, it's shared with the rest of the floor and a little sketchy - think standard high school bathroom). I have to say though, the massage itself was wonderful, fully exceeded my expectations. Indigo did a wonderful job of melting away my stress. Overall, a very positive experience. read more

January 2018: It's now a year and 8 months later and still waiting for my hair to grow back from Danielle's disastrous cut, something resembling a mullet. I have to keep trimming the rest of my hair to eventually get the hair Danielle chopped up to blend with the rest of my hair, a long process if you have curly or wavy hair. You don't see the quick results of hair growing on curly hair especially because of shrinkage and it takes a long time for hair to form a curl or spiral. So ladies, my advice and life lesson, do not just trust anyone to cut your hair especially if you have wavy or curly hair, go somewhere that knows about your hair. In response to the salon comments, maybe this salon has good reviews but it also has some bad reviews. Ladies, all it takes is just one bad review because a bad haircut review isn't a bad sandwich or bad dinner being reviewed ( obviously unless you were sick as a result), that's a one time event, no big investment, you never go back and you move on with your life. A bad haircut is devastating and has long term effects, in my case I suspect it will be a total of 2 1/2 years of healing from this cut, so yes I still have a little more time that I need to deal with this. And there was nothing I could have said to the salon that could have fixed this.. just simply have to let the hair PATIENTLY grow back. But I keep updating my review to warn those out there of my awful experience that I have been dealing with as a result of Danielle's haircut and to choose a salon and hair stylist with your eyes wide open. read more

Having been to about 100 salons in NYC over the years I can honestly say this one is the best! James is a rock star with color, not to mention personable and incredibly cool! Kim cuts my hair and is by far the best in the business. SHE GETS IT! She spends time talking to you about your hair texture, hair health, lifestyle and your expectations and she LISTENS!!!! They have a new location, and James is still wonderful and brilliant and does fabulous work on your hair as always (I finally had my hair colored by him and I loved it!); but the stylist I used to go to for cuts is no longer there (she moved), and their bigger location (though gorgeous) is not personally my style (I preferred going to their smaller original salon because it felt cozier and more relaxed; I'm a fan of out-of-the-way hidden gems, but that's just my personal preference and comfort and has nothing to do with quality of service). I'm not an online review person, but I've honestly been meaning to suck it up and post a review for James Corbett Studios for quite a while now, because I have never been completely thrilled with a salon or stylist/colorist EVER like I am when it comes to James! And let me mention I've lived a lot of places, spent ridiculous amounts of money going to the "hot" hair guru of any particular moment, and I've been disappointed more times than you'd think a 29-year-old could count. But hey, I color my hair a lot! And move a lot ... and thus I know the pain of searching for the perfect coif master in a new city. It's daunting. It's downright scary. When I moved to NYC 3 years ago from Dallas, I researched every trendy and classic salon in the city, and practically pulled my hair out trying to decide where to take my tresses for a trim and highlight. THANK THE GODDESS of BEAUTY JUNKIES that my job put me in contact with a lovely editor at Lucky magazine, who just so happened to have those perfect "my hair has been enhanced, but there are no telltale signs" highlights. When I asked who did her hair, she emphatically insisted I visit "Corbett" (as he was called at WT before - thankfully! - he opened his own oasis of beauty). The rest is history. But I don't just have hair that constantly garners compliments (I mean, do I ever, though!!), I also have a more pronounced personal look, and a place I know I can go if I want a dose of pure wellness and pampering, without the pretentiousness. James has an innate knack for helping his clients find a look that's entirely them, and also completely in the moment. I change my color constantly, but he somehow makes the transitions seamless - noticeable in the right way, and simultaneously unnoticeable in the right way. I know I'm ridiculously longwinded (sorry!) when I'm passionate about something, but let me break down a few things: JAMES: Kind, funny, visionary, and just flat out the BEST COLORIST you will ever go to. Yes, he's touted as a genius in the media. You should believe them. And you should treat yourself to the experience of getting to know him. He will entertain you, beautify you, and make you want to befriend him! JAMES CORBETT STUDIOS: Asian-inspired comfort, if that makes sense! You can throw your Gucci or bags of farmers market finds on the comfy leather couches when you arrive and not worry about a thing while you're there. With the addition of the Spa and yoga space downstairs, you are truly in for a complete escape from daily stresses. My visit last week, I was surprised with being treated to a therapeutic manicure while my hair processed. I won't lie - I almost fell asleep while magic was being worked on my terrible cuticles. I can't wait to "ohm" there, and follow it with a facial! Want coffee, tea, wine? Basically, the staff caters to your every need or want, but in a relaxed, friendly, melt away your troubles and leave with gorgeous tresses kinda way. Nothing uppity or uncomfortable here. THE STAFF: Speaking of, the stylists are all impeccable. Period. DIEGO: Let me preface by saying that I'm a dog lover. OK, completely obsessed dog fanatic!! I adore this pup! And I must say, I'm actually pretty jealous of the reviewer that said Diego sat on their lap! He typically stays mostly in his cage, and I always try to coax him out with treats. He's a Chihuahua mix and doesn't shed that I've ever noticed. I understand some people have allergies, though, but let me say that I KNOW James would be more than understanding if a client would prefer Diego not be out and about during their appointment time, for whatever reason. His #1 priority is giving his clients a wonderful experience of wellness and beauty, and he would have no problem putting Diego in a closed room if requested. So next time, just speak up! But hopefully no one does so when I'm there, because I LOOOOOVE Diego! OK folks, I'll spare you and end this novel with one final, important note: James did not solicit my review. The James Corbett Studio is by far my favorite salon in NYC. I'm an extremely picky person when it comes to my hair color and James has nailed it each and every time no matter what shade I'm after! Plus, he's super kind and takes the time to listen to you so that you leave with exactly what you had in mind. I also started getting my haircut there with Danielle and she's just as amazing at cuts and styling as James is at color! I've even been stopped on the street with people complimenting my color and cut...not just once but mutiple times. I was recommended by friends to get my haircut by Gigi at the salon but when I stopped in to check the place out they told me that she was no longer there and told me that they had no idea where she had gone and tried to convince me to see another one of thier stylists. I think all women expect something special to happen when they go to get their hair cut and colored, it's normal, we want to look amazing and we hope that the person coloring and cutting our hair will care as much as we do. Well this is the experience I always wanted and that's exactly what happened when I went to James Corbet Studios. James greeted me warmly and treated me like a friend, that made me feel comfortable right away. James asked me a lot of questions to be sure I'd have the hair color I wanted, he was sympathetic and non-judgmental when I explained I had ruined my hair trying to color it at home. I felt so relaxed. When my hair color was done I got a hair cut by Danielle. She has to be one of the sweetest women I have ever met and she was equally as professional and knowledgeable as James. In fact, everyone there was totally nice. I didn't feel like I was "just" getting my hair done, I felt like I was in a relaxing spa-like getaway that made all of my work and family worries melt away. I had my hair done this weekend for a wedding by a lovely girl named Danielle. James came over to introduce himself to me and was super-friendly. I loved my hair, it was so perfect several people asked me if it was fake. "Fake? How could it be fake? No, it's real, thank-you-very-much." That's just how good it was. Diego the Chihuahua is a lovely touch, made me feel right at home and miss my own Chihuahua. Great locale in Union Square, super cute little tucked-away location makes you feel like you've found a rare gem in the city. My only regret is that I couldn't stay in NYC longer and have my hair cut and colored too. Next time I'm there, I'll be sure to visit. The made-to-order tea also soothed a made-to-order hangover from the night before. Would definately reccomend this place to a friend, or to you, Stranger! Oh, an in case you're wondering, it was $159 for my updo. But well worth the price. I'm sure fake hair costs a lot more. read more
