I read multiple reviews about James Hook so on a recent trip, I made it a point to go there on my last day in Boston. I had heard that it's pretty much a trailer with some picnic tables. The GPS took me across the walking bridge, but it was a beautiful stroll nonetheless. At the other end of the bridge was literally a trailer. I didn't see any picnic tables (maybe only during the summer), but there were four small...very small tables, inside to sit. I could tell immediately that I would like this joint. Talking to one of the workers there, it seemed to be a family-run business. I saw their lobster rolls and ordered one of those and then a cup of their clam chowder ($6). Their rolls come in a small size, but I opted for the larger ($15). Though the lobster rolls were pre-made, it tasted heavenly. So much lobster in it and could taste lobster in every bite with just enough mayo. The soup was phenomenal. Also tried their lobster bisque which was amazing. Ended up buying some frozen soup to bring home. The workers there were really friendly as well. Really, everything else there was fresh seafood of all kinds that you could buy and cook at home. Small fish market style restaurant where you can buy lobsters, chowders, oysters, etc. We came here for the lobster roll and clam chowdaaaa and ended up with lobster bisque and lobster mac and cheese too! They have 2 sizes of lobster rolls. The regular is $14 and the lobster mac and cheese is $9. I think the clam chowder was around $7. I wasn't a huge fan of their lobster roll (compared to North End Fish Market) just cause their bun was a piece of toast, not buttered or anything.. and their lobster salad just seemed like lobster and mayo, BUT it was still delicious and I would still get it again if I went back. I just prefer North End's because it has other stuff in the lobster like celery and lemon zest. Clam chowder was just okkk. Nothing special I liked the lobster mac and cheese, but it seems like it's hit or miss. They use pasta shells and put chunks of lobster on it, then top it off with lobster bisque. MM! But when my friend went there a few days later, she said her pasta was really hard.. so I guess it just depends how long it's been sitting there?? Come here for the huge chunks of lobster! read more

This is really a seafood market with tubs full of live lobster and coolers full of excellent seafood (the boat dock is around back). The service is great, just know it's not a traditional restaurant. I had the best boiled lobster from Key West to Maine. Washed my hands and continued my walking tour of Boston. This was the highlight of my day, no disrespect to the founding fathers. A great place to go if you want to grab fresh lobster rolls! If you're looking for a lobster roll that has all the other stuff (veggies, fancy seasonings), this may not be what you want, BUT if you want a lobster roll that has plenty of lobster and not much else (which is what I want in my LOBSTER roll), this is the place! You can also buy fresh lobster to take home or for them to steam it for you! Also their freezers are worth checking out for their frozen seafood for a great price. One complaint is that the drinks are ridiculously overpriced. Regular cans of soda are $2, it may be a better deal to get a larger sized bottled tea for the same price. read more

This place is great! All of the seafood looks super fresh and delightful. I got the lobster roll and stuffed scallop. Lobster roll was so good! Cold roll with the perfect amount of mayo and seasoning. I'm an old bay seasoning lover so I added a bit more to the top and it was perfect. The scallop was okay, a bit too much filler for my liking, I wouldn't get it again but it's not untasty, I just dont like bread! The employees here are great! Very very friendly and accommodating. I am not a lobster roll expert, so take that into mind when reading my review. The lobster roll was tasty and simple, it does not come with fries or anything else. The bread is a simple hot dog bun. The space is basically a seafood store with a few tables. The service was really fast and the cost was $20 for a large (1/3 pound of meat). There is free parking available. We've been going to James Hook for the past 10 years or so. The lobster rolls are always delicious! Very fresh, and they don't skimp on the meat. Also, their prices are influenced by the lobster market. When the market is tight, the lobster rolls could go up to like $30. But it's not their fault! We always order their large lobster rolls -- worth every penny! With that said, they used to toast their rolls, but haven't seem to do so in the past couple of years. In fact, we just placed an order yesterday, asked for the rolls to be toasted, still, they came out untoasted. Why oh why??!!! During the lunch rush they can take your lobster roll order (most popular item) outside to cut down on wait time inside where others might be ordering more complicated items. Clam chowder, which was chock full of minced clams, was thick and hearty and definitely hit the spot on a cold winter's day. The stuffed scallop (stuffing made of panko bread crumbs with seasonings) was good but nothing I'd write home about. We also received complimentary lobster bisque samples which were rich and creamy and the perfect addition to our seafood feast. Price: On the expensive side but the quality is more than worth it. First timers in Boston, here! Now, how we found this place is a good story. We had a flight leaving in the afternoon and some time to kill. Quick google search sent us to Neptune Oyster, where the line was already long before opening. We had luggage, too. This is a small restaurant with fresh off the boat seafood. There is nothing fancy about this place. The inside has a few tables, a small area to order from and a large case holding all the fresh fish they have for sale. They also have a few table set up outside for use, weather permitting. The clam chowder is just the right consistency and full of clams. My wife had the shrimp chowder which had a very generous portion of shrimp and seasoned just right. We also had the crab cake which was full of fresh crab meat and little filler. If you want fresh seafood for a reasonable price, James Hook is your place. read more

The lobster roll was stuffed with huge chunks of fresh, quality lobster meat, dressed in light mayo. Surprisingly, although the bun looked like a typical hot dog bun, it had a nice chewy texture. The lobster bisque for $7.00 was also very savory and delicious without being too creamy. It complemented the lobster roll perfectly. We also tried the stuffed scallop for $4.50, which was alright.
