I have multiple dental issues due to lifelong teeth clenching and grinding and am experiencing the damage done. They have saved several teeth with their expertise and diligence that would ordinarily have been pulled. They are thorough and do everything possible to achieve your dental health and goals. Hilda in the front office works with you on accessing insurance and making sure you are covered. The office atmosphere is friendly, Professional and there to assist their patients. UPDATE: Rating changed from 5 stars to 1 star due to medical negligence. My initial positive review was premature. After the surgery, I experienced prolonged pain and discovered the dentist , Dr. Ali left foreign tissue deep in the back of my mouth on two separate occasions. My teeth are now sensitive after filling cavities. Also, Dr. Ali prepared my tooth for crown, yet left no space for contact for dental floss which means food kept getting stuck in between and my teeth and my temp crown fell out of my mouth this weekend. This required follow-up care that should have been unnecessary. Furthermore, the office's business practices are concerning. One woman at front desk was defensive w me and kept hurrying Dr. Ali to finish my service so she could have a talk w me before she left for the day and didn't want me to leave bad review. She stopped a dentist in the middle of a job, spoke to me while I was in dental chair w a numb mouth, pretended to apologize for our negative encounter yet took no responsibility, blamed me and ranted about how they never have bad customer experiences. That's not an apology. They also frequently take patients into the back rooms specifically to pressure them into "upsells" rather than focusing on the quality of clinical care. Response to Owner: It is highly unprofessional that the owner responded to my concerns and the concerns of others, with defensiveness by bringing up private dental history (crowns) and using my initial "politeness" to dismiss legitimate surgical errors. I had a very disappointing experience at this dental office. My daughter went in for a consultation after her orthodontist recommended tooth extractions to create space for her braces. During the visit, one of the assistants told my daughter she wouldn't recommend the procedure because it could make her face "look weird." She even said that if it were her own daughter, she wouldn't do it. I found this extremely unprofessional and inappropriate. Comments like that can be very harmful, especially to a young patient. If there were concerns, they should have been explained in a respectful and professional way not by making negative remarks about my daughter's appearance. In my opinion, Jjp Dental is The most fraudulent dental office I have ever experienced. I am reporting them to my medical insurance and to the Dental board of Sacramento. All I can say is be careful because they will tell you that your crown or even say that you need four crowns when you only maybe need one crown, that it is not covered by your insurance and they have you pay cash right at that moment of $927. They also charge me another $500 for something regarding preparing the tooth which I asked several dentist and they said they never do anything like that they never would refund me my money. My boyfriend had a very similar experience with them as they wanted him to have all four new crowns in which he just had cavities I was told by a reliable source that this was a usual occurrence. My opinion is to not use JjP Dental owned by Janet Refoa where I had the majority of my problems with and a very, very, very rude office staff. I have the most phenomenal dentist now in which I would love to recommend everybody to him, but I'm not allowed to. I'm so so sorry. This practice lies about using insurance. I asked whether they accepted Delta HMO and they said yes. I had multiple procedures (crowns, root canals) and the business manager Hilda told me that my insurance only covered a small portion of the fees, which i thought were high. I contacted the insurance company and the practice never used the insurance for any of the work. they had me pay full price without insurance and intentionally and repeatedly did not tell me they were doing this. This business practice and client abuse is is appalling. While the dentists are competent, if you have insurance i strongly suggest that you stay away or you will pay much more. read more

Now comes the checks and balances to the timeline that Janet spoke in court that day. Along with my past google calendar of appointments and emails requesting refunds for the procedures there are a few discrepancies to what was said in court. Not to mention that Dr. Refoa must perform the work of Jesus himself -claiming that she can perform laser surgery for a crown lengthening on a patient leaving them without a single throb of pain or discomfort afterwards. Not likely Sir. So this next round with the Requests for a Reconsideration will look a little different my friend . This round I'll have the tools and the adequate evidence to back the negligence this office has caused. So I've never actually vocalized any context with venom but what you were hearing was the truth. And that comment about other speaking of the misfortune procedures form this office all being chalked to nonsense. People that don't know each of a course of time singing the tune about mistreatment for dental work or paying extra out of pocket or the staff harboring a conniving environment is highly unlikely. Listen to the reviews. They take any opportunity to nickel and dime you. A routine visit with an upfront charge of $100 for new clients that has been included with the last 4 dental practices I have been to (traveling nurse). The DDS was on "vacation" during my visit so I never saw anyone other than assistants. I made numerous calls and an in person visit after my appointment to get a refund for the medical billing error. The anxiety and stress alone was enough to make me never want to return. This place is so dirty. And from the moment I made my appt I was I met with unprofessional and unethical behavior. My appt was cancelled 30min before. And I was lied to about what type of cleaning they did. (I wanted hand scaling). The lead aprons were completely disgusting w all types of residue and cracks all over them. And the staff doesn't introduce themselves so I had no idea a dentist was cleaning my teeth, I thought it would be a hygienist. He was terrible. Didn't even floss behind my back teeth nor my front bottom. The "drill" was the loudest and most painful -and it kept stopping on him, I'm sure it was broken. It also had no plastic sheath cover so it was also disgustingly dirty. Please do not go here. Even their lead aprons are filthy and full of cracks, so you won't be protected from the radiation of the X-rays if you care. And they charged me $100 for the X-ray results and the dentist refused to even give me the results at first. Horrible experience. This place is HORRIBLE! I'm a dentist myself and I did 1/2 day of working interview there. The place is a mess. So dirty. They use expired products. The owner doctor does all the treatment planning and expects the associate to do the work she diagnosed. The associates there have no experience and do a horrible job on the poor patients. I'm an open minded person, and generally OK with good to moderately sub-par service, but I really didn't feel the love or attention at Dr. Refoa's that I would expect from someone as intimate as a Dentist. If anything, the whole process was kind of scary. In 2017, my Front tooth (a veneer) cracked after some rigorous fruit eating, and I immediately hit yelp to find a decent Dentist who accepted Denti-cal (Covered California's version of Dental Insurance). I read the coverages for my cut-rate insurance at the time, and was pleased to find that anterior (front) veneers were covered, so I reached out to Dr. Refoa's office. I informed them that I had Med-cal, they said they accepted it, and we set up an appointment. The receptionist was nice, and the assistants were all pretty accommodating, but I couldn't help from feeling that because I was using my poor-man's insurance, I was also getting the he-doesn't-need-any-frills treatment as a result. My first red flag was when Dr. Refoa informed me that the veneer wasn't covered by my insurance. I asked why the Medi-cal info said that it was and she mentioned that because of the delicate nature of the tooth, it would require an upgraded, not-covered "cosmetic" veneer. I thought this was annoying but still in line with the typical Dentist MO, and I needed a front tooth for work and general existence, so I bit. Upon accepting the implant, Dr. Refoa asked me what I did for work before sending me to the receptionist to "run my credit." Second red flag. Before really knowing what my mouth would need, I was sent to the finance office to approve me for a care credit line. Then, to seal the nightmare, Dr. Refoa skimped on services (no mouthwash after opening my gums, no Novocain during certain cutting procedures--this even shocked her assistant who replied "she hasn't numbed you yet?!!") and seemed to use as few resources as possible. The worst part is, I ended up paying thousands (yes, plural) for the services I needed that my insurance didn't cover (front tooth), and she did a really poor job. I mean I wasn't expecting her to give me a Jim Carey smile after, but at least a "cosmetic" tooth that matches the shape and color of my other teeth would be nice. All in all, Dr. Refoa's attitude changed as soon as she realized I wasn't using good insurance. As difficult as it is to trust a Dentist in the first place, this was a super disappointing and pretty shocking experience. Why "accept" Medi-Cal patients when you don't have to? I can't wait for this thing to fall out soon so my new dentist can replace it. read more

Dr. Refoa has treated me, my husband, mother, father, and son for more than 40 years. 25 years ago she made beautiful veneers for my front teeth that took care of enormous gaps in my teeth that I had inherited from my mother. Terrible service from billing and front desk. Insurance approved dental work for my mom. The dentist and front desk person insist that it wasn't approved and that she could can get CareCredit to cover costs. My mom told them she was on disability and wouldn't quality. They told her they could make it so she qualifies. We talked directly with the insurance and they said it should be approved. They're trying very hard for us to go out of pocket. Cost wouldn't be an issue but we received verification that insurance covers it. No respect toward client/patient on 3 separate interactions with front desk. 1. I called to ask if my moms work had been approved. The front desk person kept on interrupting me while I was trying to talk. I asked her to let me finish and not interrupt. She kept talking. I asked her to let me talk. So she hung up on me. 2. I called and asked to speak with a manager or anyone that wasn't this front desk person. She said no one was available. I asked for her manager's email. She said she didn't have it. I find that hard to believe. 3. I stopped by and asked for my moms paper work. Front desk person said she couldn't help me. I told her I needed the paper my mom brought (insurance told us my mom should keep this paper) so she could see another dentist. She said ok and went to the back to eat. She literally left me standing there, didn't even bother to tell me how long it would take for her to figure it out, come back from lunch, or ask someone else to help me. I was raised in Beverly Hills 90210 and I can speak very badly about this dental office , the work they did to me has to be done again and I have to spend thousands of dollars to repair my teeth , my new treatment started with another dentist. Among the list of all the work that another dentist has to do ,for example a tooth is so bad as they did the work that there is no solution other than to do an implant ,I have to pay now over $5,000, for just one tooth. I came here for a wisdom tooth extraction. Doctor Janet tried to force my tooth loose after four unsuccessful local anesthesia attempts that only numbed me a little over halfway. Would keep going even after I'd tell her I could feel everything. Her office also tried to upsell me on a $2200 procedure I didn't go there for. When I said I'd resist it at a later date she later questioned me about why I didn't want to do it today along with everything else. The multiple stabs of novocaine have worn off and now I'm in more pain than I started off with. I do not recommend this office for any kind of oral surgery or similar procedure. Also their staff all speaking another language around me the whole time I was in their presence didn't inspire confidence at all. I definitely felt like they were talking about me several times during my visit. Also I found out later that they had other anesthetics like nitrous oxide that whole time and never offered them to me. And when I eventually asked them about any other options they told me the more advanced anesthesia would cost $1200 for an hour and wasn't covered by my insurance (which it is. I called my provider while still in their office to confirm). I do not feel like my best interests were being attended to here whatsoever. I won't be back and am honestly considering contacting the Dental Board of California about their failure to offer me their full range of options despite all the unnecessary stinging pain they caused me. OH and on my way out I had to remind THEM to refund me $175 for a part of the procedure they didn't even do. If I hadn't brought it up myself they were just going to keep my money. read more

just now NEW Dr Janet has been my dentist for a year now. The first thing I can tell you is that I have been treated like family since day 1 and I have fallen in love with her entire office. Dr Reza has helped me through some scary procedures including an implant, with his corny jokes and laughing at my even cornier jokes along with the lovely Jasmine assisting him who seems to have better jokes than both of us. Dr Janet feels like an auntie to me with her warm and caring smile. She has been involved at different capacities with every one of my procedures which is a constant reminder that I am getting the best treatment possible. I hate doing negative reviews, but take this as a warning. My mother got 2 implants at this place, one of them would never heal. After going back, they told her it was all normal. She ended up going to another doctor, trained at Loma Linda, who identified a long term absess. Both implants were way too high, way into her sinus, and had to be removed. They posts that this doctor uses are off brands, and not compatible with the tools of other dentists. The surgery to remove just one of these units required 16 stitches and they ended up having to do bone grafts. So not only wasting the $5800 spent at Dr. Refoa, the healing time, time with the infection, and having to pay to re do it. Find a better dentist that actually cares. read more

Stay away from this place. (I'm on Medi-Cal and, heads up, most of their dentists seem pretty terrible, I suppose unsurprisingly, although poorer people deserve great care too.) 1) To start with the worst of it: I was in pain due to a needed root canal; they began the work, promising to relieve the pain, while they said they had to put in the request to Medi-Cal to finish / do the actual root canal. They messed that up and I left in WORSE pain. So, I went back a second time and they again said they do work to relieve the (now worse) pain; AGAIN I left in what has wound up being more pain. Crazy. I am still in pain as I wait to see a new dentist. 2) They put in said root canal request to Medi-Cal by snail mail (insane for a time-sensitive, pain-filled, just-started root canal, not to mention the year 2023). Two weeks later Medi-Cal hadn't received it so I called and they re-sent the request. First procedure was on 3/9, Medi-Cal never got the request till 3/24. And when they did, they denied the root canal because Refoa's office didn't send all the correct x-rays. When I called Refoa's office to complain about this they said sending the request electronically "wasn't set up yet" (???) and as far as sending the incorrect x-rays, they blamed Medi-Cal and said "no matter what we send them they say it's incorrect." Uh-huh...... 3) They tried to get money out of me multiple times during my two visits, and again by phone when I would call them to check in and/or complain I am still in pain. Granted, some of this was legit in that I need implants and Medi-Cal won't cover implants. But they were VERY pushy about it, pressuring me to make appointments, give them down payments (without even consulting their actual surgeon), telling me I should talk to my parents and/or that I could open medical-specific credit cards to pay with credit or in increments -- I mean Jesus Christ. This is painful to even put in writing. 4) I just called them to complain about the fact they've messed up my procedure and TWICE let me leave in more pain than I arrived in, to let them know they fucked up the root canal request, and to ask why they use snail mail for time-sensitive medical procedures. And to let them know that I am, obviously, moving on to a new dentist. I'm sure it'll surprise you to hear they didn't give much of a shit. Beware. read more

My X-ray technicians Jason & Mojdeh were SUPER sweet and all about the "technique" so you never ever feel pain! They're the best! I needed a filling and Janet was really accurate. SCAM ARTISTS!!! Beware of this place! They act nice and welcoming at first, claim they'll work with you on prices, claim your insurance covers things it doesn't. I got a root canal and was told my Insurance would cover the canal and crown. Then suddenly they claimed they never said that, and I had to pay for the canal. I did so, but they still said the crown would be covered. Then once the canal was done, they claimed the crown ISNT covered, and that I needed to pay for it within the week or else my tooth would fall apart without a temporary crown, which they wouldn't do unless I paid for it when we had already agreed I wouldn't be. Hilda is the rudest person I have ever met. She acted SO nice the first appointment. Like an actual angel. Then suddenly she flipped a switch, lied to my face multiple times, and even made snarky and rude remarks like "well maybe you should go rob a bank to pay for it then". Don't fall for the nice act, these people are NOT good people. They're unprofessional liars that don't care for your well being and simply want to take every cent of yours. Terrible people and I'm mad I fell for the nice act. I sat in the dentist chair for an hour after being numbed because my dentist was talking to another client next to me. After waiting an entire hour, the numbing wore off, and once he started working on me I felt it all. He kept going when I said it hurt and only renumbed me once I complained the third time of the pain. After refusing to pay for the crown, i left and will not be going back. Now im in horrible pain, but thankfully found another dentist who quoted me lower for the crown and actually cares about my wellbeing! They do not care about you. This practice has a handful of lovely staff members (Hilda, Jason and Mojdeh), so I'm wary of being overly critical of the entire practice. Also Dr. Refoa can be friendly and they did an okay job with cleanings. But buyer beware of doing serious dental work here. Over the years I was a patient, I had more bad experiences than good. The worst experience was a decayed molar that went from an onlay to a root canal in less than 6 months because of constant pain (Refoa, personally, overruled the dentist's recommendation for the root canal only to have to do it again in shortly). Then the root canal was a marathon, 2 day, 8 total hour procedure by a specialist who didn't seem at the... how do I say this delicately... peak of his powers. The prongs weren't inserted into the canals properly and the whole thing needed to be completely redone. It was so bad that the insurance company refunded the cost (after JPP refused to comply), which I've never experienced in my life. My insurance company also discovered aberrant billings one for a root canal that I'd had done at another dentist some 5 years previous. Again, I think they have a lovely staff, but my experience was pretty awful and I now realize the importance of having a fantastic dentist that you can trust. read more

My friends elderly father had a dental emergency, and because I was a patient, Janet and her team saw him ... even during this COVID pandemic. They were professional, they tested him for the virus and wore PPE so we felt a high level of safety and comfort. The work they did was phenomenal ... gentle yet effective.
