The sushi tasted as if it was from a gas station- overly chewy and rubbery The orange chicken tasted cheap and old. There wasn't even an "orange" flavor. It seemed to just be deep fried fat. I've been coming here off and on for over 10 years. It's average chinese food but sometimes it's good. So to me consistency is probably the key. The owners are very friendly and cater to everybody, lots of smiles and the waiters are also good. Few years ago, the lunch special, I used to get ton of food for $7, I guess they realize, then they reduced the portion, so I get half of what I usually get. That was a surprise for me. I guess just a business decision. Then recently late 2017, they changed the layout from the outdated look. It looks nice and clean. I can see they really trying. I stopped by to get a few sushi rolls (Alaska roll and Rainbow rolls) for dinner. Even though I enjoyed eating the sushi and through the fish was fresh, the prices here were a few dollars too high and the sushi rolls are smaller than the ideal size. I would suggest making bigger sushi rolls and lowering the price. That would make the crowd come back often. The people inside are friendly and the seating area looked pleasant. I probably won't get sushi here until the price goes down, but maybe something with a better price. I come here about 4 times a month because it's so close to my house and pretty damn convenient for me. I usually stick to the Japanese Cuisine side of the menu because I love Sushi. I always get the Specialty Rolls and they never fail to disappoint. The fish is always VERY fresh. I recently had the Rainbow Seafood and it was magnificent. The interior is very nice and elegant too. They recently redid the place not too long ago. The parking is in the back. This place may not be the best, but it is right up there with the best. read more

I had dine in the restaurant today with my wife and it is our first and also our only time. I had order Chinese dishes chicken string bean and chicken udon and a sushi special for like $47 in total. The Chinese dish is consider ok if you are looking for those fast food take out place but price is double. Sushi is horrible, I'm not a picky eater but definitely worked in the food industry for 10 years and ate all kinds of food. I literally ate 2 pieces of sushi and left the rest. One simple thing with sushi you cannot mess up, fresh fish is a must because it is raw and people can get sick from it.. don't ever serve your customer old fish that left in the fridge for like 2-3 days. But when I came to pick up my order a customer walked in while I was waiting for my food to be ready, he ordered 2 lunch specials in front of me- he said it loud and clear - lunch special! He payed twice less then I did for same food and... well needless to say I was shocked that cashier didn't tell him same thing as she told me - sorry we have no lunch specials because it's a holiday! Worth the gamble when you bet safe on foods your familiar with. I noticed some 50/50 reviews but honestly it was exactly what you expect. Greasy and tasty. I've been here before but this is my first yelp review. The three stars are for the taste of the food and the fast friendly staff. I recommend the spicy chicken and house fried rice as well as the fish dancing on the table w/garlic sauce. The place is nice and clean except for the men's bathroom which had an odor. Also try the Japanese beer Kirin Light it's pretty good. The price was fair not too expensive and not to low. eeeek this place is DIRTY. Came here on recommendation from some friends who rave about the lunch specials and the dim sum. I can't speak for the Dim sum because we didnt order any but from what i saw, i wont be returning. I guess people give rave reviews for this place is because its very cheap and you can have a sit-down meal for the same price as take-out. I don't think the prices are worth it when you have to deal with sticky table coverings, dirty spoons and dirty/stained plates. The wonton soup they brought me was full of oil floating on the surface and i had to basically wash my own spoon with water from my glass because it wasnt cleaned properly. Gross. Sorry, I realize I sound like a total snob but I just can't stand it when things are clearly being handled with a sloppy, careless attitude. The shrimp with vegetable lunch special was basicallly frozen vegetables and tiny pieces of shrimp in watered down soy sauce. So bland and not worth even the $7. I only give the place 2 stars because the owner seems very nice and is very friendly to everyone, you can't say the same for his waitstaff who all looked unhappy to be there. Overall the restaurant looks run down, the wooden majestic chairs need replacing. We were attracted to the dim sum and stepped in for our first time. Miserable selection of dim sum dishes and they were not fresh. They also sell Japanese and Chinese dishes on top of Hong Kong dim sum. This restaurant is trying to offer a lot of variety and trying to look posh but they are no different from other Chinese take-out. I dislike all the dishes. My friend REALLY wanted to go here tonight. I used to go here all the time 10 years ago, so I decided to concede knowing I could probably get a nice sushi combo. We got to the restaurant and were seated in a very large booth. We made a joke about it being unnecessarily large, but I didn't think anything of it until much later. Our waitress came over and was very curt with us and seemed frustrated by questions like "do you have broccoli?" and "are there any sushi combos that have a variety?" She pointed to the menu and walked away. We got our food relatively quickly. My combo came with a great miso soup. However the sushi was a different story. The pieces came out and I tried one. It was pretty "mushy" and tasted a little off. I tried a different piece, same thing. I tried 4 pieces and finally gave up. It was awful. One piece was so bad that I had to spit it out. I was going to leave it, but my friend insisted we ask for a manager and complain. We waited for a while, and our waitress never came back. Finally we flagged down a bus boy who grabbed a manager. This is where things get REALLY interesting - I told him that the fish tasted bad. He then told me that it's because I don't usually eat fish and that's what fish tastes like; I should try another piece. I explained to him that I tried 4 DIFFERENT pieces, and they all tasted the same and were gross. He again tells me that I'm wrong, and I don't know my fish, and tried to blame it on the rice (like that would have been a reasonable excuse!) I explained to the manager that not only do I normally go out for sushi weekly, I also cook fish at home most evenings, and my brother in law is a sushi chef; I KNOW my sushi. I then took a chopstick, held it sideways and smushed through a piece of sushi on the plate and said "If it was fresh, it wouldn't do that." and handed him the plate. I am NEVER rude in restaurants, but I am not used to being treated like a child either. I worked as a server / bartender for 7 years when I was getting my undergrad and masters - I would have never treat a customer like that - berating them because they complained about the food. I also want to state this is the only time EVER that I have sent food back because it tasted bad. I could even get past the awful food if the manager had been apologetic and accommodating, instead of accusatory and berating me for my "lack of" a palate with fish. The check came from a different, nicer waitress. They took the sushi off, but added the miso soup (despite it being part of the combo.) And not long after I got home I was sick, and have been since. Thank goodness I only ate 4 pieces. ....and that solves the mystery of why there were large open booths at 7:30 on a Thursday night. read more

Not bad, not great. In its 2001/2002 heyday, Jani won "best of" LI foods. I suppose it's fair to say that while good, they're not where they used to be. The Chinese menu offers good variety and fair prices. Taste and portion-wise, the shredded beef with string beans, sweet and sour chicken, and fried dumplings are among their better choices. Wontons and twice cooked pork, rather chewy and dry. I'm always wary of Chinese restaurants that try their hand in the more profitable sushi market. As with other Chinese restaurants that offer sushi, their sushi is middle of the road at best. If I'm here with others who want sushi, I'm in. Otherwise, I stay with what I feel are their much better traditional Chinese selections. The staff is attentive and friendly, with waiters happy to help each other's diners. Special requests have never been a problem, and we've never been left to wait. Decor is a cross between Ming Dynasty and a flop house. A glass display case filled with tea kettles and curios. Those mahogany booth seats, while impressive, need an update. The upholstery looks like it came out of my 1974 Torino, and at 5'8" tall, I feel like I need a booster seat to reach the soy sauce. The whole effect is a bit aged and gloomy. Good Chinese meals make for a great place to take out. Dining in? Not too bad. The Sushi? Try Nubon, a block down. With a new look and new attitude, Jani could be a contender again. Until then, this former beauty queen is showing some wrinkles. read more

REVISION ********************** I always visit this restaurant to pick up lunch or dinner. I'm revising my review because I am very disappointed with my most recent visit. A week and a half ago I order Chicken Noodle Soup and placed my order over the phone as I usually do. I picked my order up and arrived at work. I opened my container and realized that it was some sort of vegetable soup, I tried some but it tasted like water and noodles. I called the restaurant to complain about my order being wrong, I informed the woman on the phone that I wouldn't be able to return today because I would be out of work until after they closed. I told her that I could come in on that Friday to pick up my correct order and she said that was fine. I wasn't able to make it there until a week later, the woman remembered my situation and told me that there was chicken at the bottom of my soup. I told her that it tasted like water and noodles. She now told me that they wouldn't give me a replacement soup because the chef told her he put chicken in the soup. Keep in mind that I always order this soup and I never order it with vegetable, so she was the one who decided to put in for this veggie soup. I reiterated what she told me that day and she told me that they only do exchanges and I should have come back with my soup that day. Then her manager backed her up and I didn't want to argue because I was on my lunch break and needed my meal. I'm very upset that I was treated this way by the restaurant and I will think twice before ordering again because their customer service is horrible and they take back their promises to customers. read more

Worst sushi place in my life! I ate dinner few days ago water cup and chair were really dirty. Someone's lipstick mark was in the cup. And I ordered Tuna lover and Young Chow fried rice. Tuna was too fishy and rice were so awful,I leftover all of rice. Young Chow fried rice has to be all meat and veggie in the fried rice but only chicken and shrimp were there. Food was awful. I have been to the Jani in Wantagh many times and always enjoyed the food. Hickville restaurant must be a different owner. The chicken was old and dried out. Rice served in bento box with chicken looked like brown mush. The sushi not rolled tight and rolls fall apart. The food had no presentation like other sushi places and was just plopoed on a plate. The tempora shrimp was fried in old oil and tasted nasty. Never again.... Adding to review: Hours later bad pains in my stomach. My friend who ate there is sick as well. I should have read all the other bad review before going. I hope I don't have food poisening. This was the nastiest food I ever eaten. I strongly suggest you avoid this place. read more

Hicksville, NY is typically a town that is frequented by most for Indian food and not Chinese food. Well, that was different this past Saturday and the location was Jani on the west side of 106/107, just before IKEA in a strip mall on the right. Alex, the manager, is still here several years later (It's probably been a good 3-5 years since I've been there) and is still wearing a suit and rockin' his slick straight back hair. He's still extremely friendly and accommodating, and runs the place well. Jani is a solid 3.25-3.5 stars as many of my Asian friends will eat here as they consider it a "pretty decent somewhat authentic" option for Long Island...outside of Flushing, Queens. Their menu has everything from dim sum to your standard American'y/Chinese dishes to authentic Chinese dishes...they even have those cocktails that you're used to seeing in ALL Chinese restaurants from the 80s! We ordered the: 1. Crystal Shrimp Dumplings ---- very tasty, good dumpling consistency and the soy sauce/chili paste combo was good 2. Wonton Soup ---- very soft wontons, broth was good and not "watery" 3. Vegetable steamed dumplings ---- moist and delicious 4. Spinach Fried Rice ---- this was good, filled with spinach done 23423 different ways haha...you better like spinach! 5. Garlicky shrimp ---- it was damn garlicky but damn good 6. Chicken with Broccoli (requested strips of white meat) ---- this was your standard run of the mill Cw/B and is nothing to write home about overally, Jani was a solid performer for our Chinese food cravings and we were quite happy to see that the food wasn't oily, greasy and tasted "pretty fresh". give it a shot...it's not the most authentic spot, it's not expensive by any means, and if you're Oh-KAY with a 3.25-3.5 star experience for the evening, do Jani in Hicksville. read more

After visiting this restaurant I felt like I just traveled back in time to a Chinese restaurant in the 80's. Very outdated and the food is similar also. They have a very limited selection of dim sum which is why I visited and for the price of 3.5 per dim sum I would go somewhere else with better quality. I don't know why some restaurants try to incorporate so many different type of cuisines into one restaurant. Focus on the core and what you are good at. If you are offering Chinese American just be good at that and don't try to also offer Japanese and Cantonese. This will only incriminate customers when you offer lackluster food. We also decided to order the beef chow mein off their Cantonese section which was another disappointment. Unfortunately, they used noodles that were suppose to be hold dishes as decoration and not to be consume. I am kind of disappointed in this restaurant given the proximity to Queens and their inability to hire real chefs. This is a 1 1/2 star. read more

Not impressed. We had a work function here. $25 a person for a bowl of sweet and sour soup, some fried noodles, a family style portion of rice, general toes chicken, and beef and broccoli. The food was mediocre. It wasn't hot like it had just came out of the oven which was disappointing. The place is clean, nicely decorated but the food wasn't great. Service: extremely slow. Food: zero flavor. The shrimp shumai had shrimp but lacked flavor. We ordered the orange chicken (waiter asked if we wanted mild or spicy and we ordered it medium). The chicken had no orange flavor. As a matter of fact, it lacked flavor altogether! The pan fried noodles and the menu described the dish as having scallops, chicken and crab with veggies. It's KRAB: imitation crabmeat. For $18, you'd think they had real crabmeat with the chicken, scallops and veggies. Again, no flavor. This is my go to lunch spot since I work in hicksville, but I visited for dinner the other night and it was delicious. Their egg drop soup isn't thick or liquidy, just right. They have amazing shrimp dumplings and the service is so quick and friendly. Recommend this if you want something different especially before catching a movie read more

I just dont know. The staff is very pleasant, welcoming and courteous which is what you would hope when you try a new restaurant. Unfortunately, the decor is a sight for sore eyes. The furniture is beyond dated and the booths are a pain to sit in. The cushions in the booth are split so it makes it very hard to sit in. As for the tables, the chairs are what you expect from a very stereotypical grandmother's house. Now for the food I thought it was OK; it was nothing spectacular but also was nothing terrible. I got the General Tso's chicken and my partner got a sushi roll. The chicken wasn't bad but it wasn't good either so I really have mixed emotions about this place as for the sushi my partner said it was good but kind of soggy like It was kept in a low-temperature frigerator. read more
