We just had a rehearsal dinner for our son there for a party of 50. We reserved the outdoor and adjacent room for the event and it was just perfect. No interruptions from the other diners. The outdoor area was very pretty, private and cozy but not tightly spaced. Garden was beautiful and we even had a great sunset view. The food was fantastic. Everyone loved it and commented on how good it all was from the hors d'oeuvres to the salad which was outstanding, to the 3 entree options and dessert. The salmon was perfectly prepared over a bed of orzo. Pasta primavera was unlike anything we have ever had, and the free range chicken dish was delicious. Service was attentive yet unobtrusive. Food is great, as is ambiance. Staff are hit/miss. I had one of the haughtiest waiters here that I've ever had. I brought guests from the area and from other cities. One of my guests had not been to the restaurant since it was Cresheim Valley Cafe. When she mentioned this, the waiter was derisive. While Jansen is different than Cresheim, Cresheim was a lovely restaurant. There was no need to insult a guest for having a fond memory of the restaurant that used to be. The waiter shared the evening's specials. The guests had questions, but if they did not follow his direction on what to order, he was downright rude. I hope Jansen takes a serious look at their service. This place could be a gem, but I don't think any restaurant will survive these days with staff that are rude, Guests are guests. We had such an incredible experience last night! It's beautiful inside, the drinks are phenomenal, the service and omgoodness Chef Jansen is a treasure! I am so sorry for not remembering the bartenders name, but I had the best Martini I have EVER had last night. Our beautiful server Anitra (so sorry if I botched that spelling) was so caring, so sweet, informative, on top of everything. Man took care of us all through the night as well. If I lived closer I'd be there every weekend, living in south Jersey, Jansens is beyond worth the drive! Looking forward to returning to see what other amazing creations Chef Jansens cooks up! My wife and I finally had an opportunity to experience the "hype" last evening and we were underwhelmed. First we had hoped to arrive early and have a cocktail at the bar only to be told there's no seating at the bar despite the photos on the Jansen website. Asked why and we were told there's only one bartender for the restaurant and the six bar seats might "overwhelm the bartender". Ok. Our wedge salad came for us to share at the table (note $5 up charge for the kitchen to put it on two share plates), the lettuce crunchy but the dressing was flavorless and very watery. Disappointment #2. My $48 SIRLOIN steak was cooked properly but arrived hardly warm on a bed of lukewarm at best mashed potatoes. My wife's branzino on risotto was hot and had good flavor. Both dishes could have benefited from a pinch of salt. Experiencing too many disappointments we passed on the resident pastry chef's dessert. All in all doubtful we'll be back to experience the "hype" a second time. read more

Sadly my favorite restaurant of all time has fallen off a bit. Several months ago I took a foodie friend of mine from NYC confident that surely Jansen could not disappoint. It did. Drink was way too strong. Food was overly-salted to the point of being inedible. Service was really odd. And not in the wonderfully quirky way that I have enjoyed with several of Jansen's awesomely attentive staff. The woman was brusque. Condescending. Not interested in discussing her menu opinions. Vegan (or vegetarian?) and almost shaming of our choice to have meat. What?!? With incredibly heavy heart I swore I wouldn't go back. When my significant other was diagnosed w a scary medical condition she wanted to go to our (former) favorite restaurant before her big surgery. I said I would give it one more try. Surely the over-salting of months prior must have been a one-off mistake. Sadly, no. Now both of us (and she is FAR more forgiving of restaurants than my NYC friend) said the food was overly-salted, we never ended up finishing either of our meals (she didn't even want to take her remaining bit home for the dog! "I'm not giving him this much sodium") and what's worse, both of our stomachs felt HORRIBLE all night long. No one wants Jansen back to its former glory more than I. It was incredible having such a high-quality eatery just 10 min from my house. As it stands now, however, like the saying says it appears that "all good things must come to an end." Sadly. read more

A wonderful restaurant from start to finish. The place is an old house elegantly updated inside. There is an outside area too. The wait staff was unbelievably attentive and thoroughly professional. We were a party of six and when the entrees came out they had extra servers serve us so everything was presented all at once. The owner even came out to say hello. I haven't even mentioned the food yet. Easily 5 stars, everything was delicious. I had a spring salad special and it was so fresh and subtly flavored. My entree was a favorite of mine, shrimp and grits and it was flavorful and delicious. The chocolate cake for dessert was a beautiful way to end the meal. I LOVEd it! read more

I had a fantastic meal at Jansen for dinner tonight. I've been wanting to try it since it opened, finally got there and it definitely didn't disappoint. The wait staff and manager were attentive and had great menu recommendations for my friend and me. I'm a sucker for an amuse bouche and we got tiny squares of brioche topped with salmon to start which were delicious. They also brought us freshly baked bread. We started with the Prosciutto Wrapped Romaine Heart which had delicious croutons and a balsamic drizzle. We also had the Hamachi Crudo which was so fresh and delicious (especially with the champagne mango and pineapple salad that was serviced with it!) it was the perfect appetizer to eat on a hot day. For our main meals my friend had the salmon and I had the lamb which was a special. His salmon was cooked in a curry that had just the right amount of spice. My lamb came with spinach orzo which was one of the best pastas I have ever tasted. The lamb was cooked perfectly as well. I would have loved to have tried a dessert but was so full after eating the appetizers and my entree that I couldn't. I will definitely be back soon. read more

The 4 of us felt very comfortable. You wouldn't even know it was raining out, the tent outside is perfect and not one bit of rain came near us. They must of had 7-8 heaters heating it up last night. On the plus side: Service was great, ambiance is great, and I like neighborhood places. I haven't been back here in years. Took a work colleague here. Food was mediocre at best. Duck salad was swimming in a near ocean of dressing, like 10x too much for what should have been a lightly dressed salad. Not sure what the presentation was supposed to be, but with the bits of egg and/or cheese in the salad swimming in the dark colored dressing it was, honestly, the most unattractive and unappetizing presentation of any dish I have had in recent memory. Duck was fine, if very plain, and small-ish... probably should have had the thigh still attached. There were only three pomme dauphine balls, which looked tiny and an afterthought on the plate, but, more importantly, didn't go with the dish, as they were made soggy by the sloshing dressing, and didn't seem like they belonged in a salad bowl at all. My colleague had the halibut, which was overcooked by a significant margin (well past what fish in a high end restaurant should have been), among other shortcomings with that dish. We happened to be in the Chestnut Hill area. Compared to any similar priced restaurant in CC, this meal was a disaster and a waste of money. Individually, certain elements tasted good: duck was tasty, dressing was fine (though not outstanding), pomme were yummy, but overall? Not good. I wanted to like it. read more

We've been dining here for a few years starting pre pandemic. The value for the quality/quantity was inline with similar upscale restaurants. That was then-this is now. The prices have risen higher than their competition and the serving portions have been shrinking. Example: The salads are close to $20 each including the wedge salad with blue cheese dressing, touted as sharing size. However when we asked to share it we were changed $5 to cut and plate it. Worse, dressing had no evidence of cheese or cheese taste. Sorry Jansen, this crowd has better options. read more

Despite positive prior dining experiences, this particular evening (July 24th) was disappointing on so many fronts. We dined with another couple, who seemed to enjoy their meal. Ours, however, particularly mine, was a different story. My husband and I shared an unrecognizable caesar salad. It bore no resemblance to a traditional caesar and was too bitter to be enjoyed, so most went back to the kitchen. My salmon entree was undercooked and basically inedible, although the sauce accompanying it was five-star. While I do enjoy sushi, this salmon was simply so undercooked that I thought it would be obvious to the staff when my plate was packaged to go ( I thought perhaps I could cook it properly once home, but ultimately could not face it again). At this point I was convinced that Chef Jansen was not in the kitchen that night. The desserts were all award-winning and we had nothing but applause for the pastry chef's talent. Our bill for the dinner was $300 which included the 1 appetizer, 2 desserts, and no alcohol. As our friends picked up the check to celebrate my husband's birthday, I noticed that the husband had added a $60 tip prior to handing the signed copy to our waiter before we left the table. Upon leaving, we turned to the left to walk down to our cars and were talking and enjoying the nice evening when our waiter came running after us loudly accusing us of taking the merchant copy of the very check I personally observed my friend placing in his hand at our table. Our friend was very embarrassed, as were we, and he returned to the restaurant to assist the waiter in locating our check, but we all felt accused of attempting to dine without paying. My husband will not make a return visit. I am happy that others have had a more positive dining experience at what had been one of my favorite restaurants. read more

Jansen never disappoints. The service is amazing every time. Attentive. Accommodating. All about the customer experience. Creative craft cocktails that change seasonally. The menu is innovative but still sticks to classic flavors and dishes the chef puts his own touches on. We got the mahi jambalaya this time and it was excellent. My partner and I come frequently and we love the ambience outside, especially in warmer months when it's lush and peaceful. My recent dinner at Jansen was more than a little disappointing, considering how impressed I had been at my previous visit. This pricey restaurant is still beautiful with great service and one of the loveliest outdoor seating areas in the City. But this time, the food was excessively salty - the Sirloin Steak, the Frites, the Milanese Veal, even the salad. I don't know if this was due to an unhappy staff member taking revenge or just an "off" night. But even our dessert was a disaster. We ordered what had been described as a "seven-layer" coconut cake which sounded moist and scrumptious, only to be served what appeared to be an ordinary two-layer cake that was dry and tasteless, covered in overly sweet icing. Food is delicious and the service is impeccable. We visited on a busy Friday night and initially we were told there were no reservations until 7:45. They called us back and said they could seat us. We ordered the baked oysters and bib salad for appetizer, very tasty. For our entrees I had the Halibut and scallops (I'm not a fan of scallops ) but these were very good, this was a special. The sauce that accompanied the dish was delicious. My husband had a chicken dish which was tasty. We were too full for dessert but they gave us these chocolate chip cookies to take home ohhh my these were amazing you could taste every ingredient the dark chocolate the salt and milk chocolate they were soft and melted in your mouth. Wonderful dinner experience at Jansen when I visited on July 25. My friend and I were treated famously by the attentive staff. I was a few minutes late for our reservation (parking is on street only and I should have ubered) but, when I arrived, I found that my friend was seated happily and enjoying a French 75. Very nice. We both had the corn vichyssoise which was perfect for a hot summer night. Then branzino for me and steak frites for my friend. I also enjoyed the tempranillo blanco which was outstanding. Had an excellent meal at Jansen last night. The service was very good, although the hostess only gave us a wine list when we sat down. Do people really know what they want to drink before they see the food menu? Didn't work for me but as soon as I mentioned it our waiter brought a food menu to the table. I thought the wine and cocktail list had some very good options. Normally I would have had prosecco or chardonnay to go with my starter and then moved on to something else with my entree, but I wasn't feeling well and knew I was only going to have one glass of wine so I chose the Simi cab and it was perfect. We started with a shrimp cocktail (for my husband) and black truffle infused eggs (for me) - creamy and delicately scrambled with black truffle shavings on top - served on a piece of toasted brioche. I will probably crave those eggs. For the second course we both had the beet salad which was excellent and perfectly dressed. For our entrees my husband had the salmon and I had the short rib. It was recommended that the salmon be cooked medium rare and he said it couldn't have been more perfect. The beef short rib was very good and I loved the other things on the plate (brussels sprouts, pureed parsnip, au jus and crispy onions). The meat was a little stringy but short ribs can be that way. Even though they might be perfectly tender, they can be a bit stringy and hard to chew at times. I wonder if they use local beef. If not, I would recommend that they do. I have found that I get the best quality and most consistent meat when I buy from a local farm. We declined dessert because we had a birthday cake waiting at home but our waiter wanted us to see the menu anyway. For me, the dessert menu was probably the weakest part of the food offerings. Nothing really appealed to me. For times like that I always wish that there was a sorbet, gelato, or ice cream on the menu - maybe with a wafer or cookie. Can't go wrong with that! Zack, our waiter, was was not hovering but always there just when we needed something. All around good food and good service. Will be nice when they open their patio for the warmer months. Jansen is northwest Philly's most gourmet restaurant. This Mt. Airy French outpost is located in one of Philadelphia's oldest houses and it offers indoor dining as well as al fresco dining on their terrace in season. The chef owner was previous the executive chef at the Four Seasons Hotel in Philadelphia until moving on to his eponymous restaurant. A high quality meal is provided here and unlike some other restaurants of its ilk, portions are actually large enough to be seen by the naked eye.The meal starts with an amuse bouche and bread course before heading into the serious dishes. My friend and I recently enjoyed a crabmeat cocktail and baked oysters for our starters. Entrees took us away from shellfish to a delicious Wagyu beef special and grilled lollipop lamb chops atop cous cous. We ended the meal splitting a traditional French Financier (Almond) cake. I enjoyed a pleasant glass of a Cote du Rhone to accompany all this goodness. It's nice to have such an outstanding restaurant close by and even though it is def expensive and could never be a regular hangout for me, every so often it could be a treat for a special occasion. A couple of wishes - I was hoping to find an Austrian wine or two on the wine carte but to no avail. And the banquette seats are really low unless you happen to be really tall. I had to push the man at the table next to me out of his banquette seat as he couldn't get up. And I felt at least15 centimeters (a half-foot) too low to be totally comfortable while dining. read more
