We rarely saw our server throughout the meal and eventually had to ask the manager just to get our bill. My husband and I were staying at the Hyatt regency and we were lucky enough to eat here a couple of times. It's a great place for drinks or more. We were here with large group of 8 for dinner. Service was excellent and attentive. Great cocktail selection. The Kaanapali spritzer was light and refreshing. Tried the hamachi sashimi with watermelon, Hawaiian big eye red tuna sashimi, Ahi tuna roll and the chef special roll. Sashimi quality is excellent. Kids menu had good selections. Others at our table had the Vietnamese pork chop, ribs, and upside down pineapple cake dessert. The cake is flambé at the table and you get a nice blue flame entertainment for a few minutes. We stayed well into the night and never felt rushed. You get a beautiful view of the sunset if your table is close to the edge. Menu is pricey but as expected for hotel restaurant. Our first night of our honeymoon we ate at Japengo. I had made a reservations about 4 months prior. They were VERY busy when we arrived and they seated us about 10 minutes after our reservation. To be honest because they were so busy the service was lacking and just did not give you an upscale feel/ nor make us feel special about celebrating our honeymoon. But that is fine because the food was great. The ambiance was amazing and the food was incredible. I'm still dreaming of that sushi!! Absolutely loved this place. The seared penguin is to die for......ok, just kidding. The duck meatballs were perfectly prepared and delicious. Wasn't sure what they would be like ordering them off the menu but they were excellent. The Ahi was fresh and very good too. We got three rolls to try a sampling of different dishes and the ribs as an appetizer for the rolls. The atmosphere is beautiful, there's a view of the sunset from the restaurant which is very nice. We stopped in a bit beforehand to take some pictures and take advantage of the view. The rolls were spectacular and we split them with the ribs between three people. They have excellent service. The cocktail menu was very expansive and the drinks were quite good. It tends to get a bit chilly after sunset but they had some torches and they put up screens between the dining area and outside to keep it warm. The crap restaurants in Lahaina, 5 minuets away are as good at half the cost. The tiki bars at Marriott or Hyatt residences club are as good at half the cost. We were sat at the indoor sushi bar with no reservation, which was perfect for us. We got to talk with our sushi chef and willingly accepted his input into our orders. We had soooo many delicious things. And I'll admit that we waaaaay over ate! The lobster dynamite was UHMAZING!!!!! Also, GET THE POKE APPETIZER! it comes beautifully plated and then you are supposed to mix it all together. Love it. Like it's an excuse to play with your food. The blackened ahi roll was very good as well. We were told it's the house special and it did not disappoint. The maguro, salmon and toro sushi was also very very fresh and tender. We were very excited to try Japengo and our excitement was met with sore disappointment. The sushi quality was poor, we couldn't even finish the two rolls that we ordered. The description of the rolls on the menu online is outdated, so you can expect to get something different than what you ordered if you order take out. The site says they close at 9 but they turn their lines off earlier and you can't get ahold of anyone, even as a guest staying at the Hyatt. Don't recommend and won't be returning. read more

We made a reservation (highly recommend) and arrived just in time, it can take some time to walk to the restaurant from the hotel parking lot. We were glad to see substantial distance between the tables and were immediately welcomed and seated upon our arrival. The drink selections were good and we ordered the miso soup and spicy umami for starters. The view of the ocean never disappoints from this restaurant. They are currently only serving guests with reservations. I spoke with a hostess today who said they are fully reserved for the month of November. I unfortunately didn't plan ahead and thus had no reservation, so take out it was! My partner and I ordered the Veggie Roll, Spicy Tuna Roll, and Spicy Edamame to go. We enjoyed all of it! The only thing I wish they had done for the take out packaging was place the veggie roll and spicy tuna roll in separate containers - they were both placed together into one.
