4.5 stars for my overall dinner at Jar, 5+ stars for the pot roast. This house specialty is perfection on a plate and perhaps my favorite piece of meat I've ever feasted upon (and I usually pass on pot roast). The roast had the perfect amount of fat--enough to make it super juicy and tender but not so much that it's noticeable and chewy. The jus was unbelievable, slightly sweetened by the onions and absolutely delicious to dip the complimentary sourdough in. The carrots were cooked just right--not to soft but not so firm that they were difficult to cut. I started off with the salad special. I don't recall the name but it was green beans, frisée, crispy shiitake mushrooms, and a whole grain mustard vinaigrette wrapped in prosciutto. It was fine, not nearly as good as it sounds. I also ordered the purple yam on the side, which isn't mind blowing but is tasty and something I'd recommend. It's baked very well (smooth texture) and comes with the perfect amount of creme fraiche. Next time I come (hopefully sooner rather than later) I'll definitely be ordering that pot roast again. I was very excited to try brunch here and it did not disappoint. We ordered the Lobster Benedict and the Corn Pancakes. The lobster benedict was very tasty. I was not sure what to expect but was pleasantly surprised. There is a definite lobster flavor in the béarnaise sauce which can be tasted in every bite. Each portion of Benedict came with one lobster claw, a slice of pork ( this was a very asian style slice of pork that you would expect to get in a pork stir fry reminiscent of the pork ribs you order at a chinese restaurant). It was very tasty however I didn't like the pea tendrils, they were very difficult to eat and the dish would have been much better with spinach instead. The corn pancakes were amazing. They were ever so slightly sweet, fluffy, and had a light crisp. I officially only want to eat corn pancakes! They also serve you a generous slize of a homemade sticky bun, almost like monkey bread. It was so decadent I had one bite to review it, but had to use all my willpower to stay away! it was needless to say delicious. They also have a great cocktail menu with variations of mimosas, bellinis, and even a prosecco and fresh watermelon juice which I should have tried it looks amazing. I would absolutely come back. Unlike many over priced brunch places in Los Angeles this brunch was actually very tasty and lived up to my expectations. Service I should add was also outstanding. Came to Jar for a work dinner and was fairly neutral about the experience. If there was a way to give Jar 3.5 stars, I would. I liked it, but I found myself thinking "I've had better ___ somewhere else" for the majority of the dinner. But I'm getting ahead of myself. Got here around 7pm on a Wed and although it wasn't packed, it definitely got crowded within the following hour. We were a large group and we ordered quickly, but I felt like the food took a fair amount of time to come out. I ordered the filet mignon that came with a starter (celeriac soup). I'm a huge soup person but was very unimpressed by the soup. It was bland and the texture reminded me slightly of applesauce. We also ordered oysters on the half shell to start, but we agreed that they were a little too briny for our liking. My steak was REALLY delicious though, to counter balance the appetizer situation. It came with a little herbed butter and was perfectly cooked to medium. We ordered a majority of the sides to share, although they didn't all make their way around. Must-orders: Purple yams - not as sweet as regular yams. More delicious. Order them! Brussels sprouts - with kimchi instead of bacon! So i could actually eat them! And they were surprisingly delicious. Solid: Tuscan kale French fries Mashed potatoes Passable: Onion rings Turnips Very sad I didn't get a chance to try the duck fried rice though! It seemed to be good. Desserts: Apple bread pudding: the best dessert hands down. Not overly sweet and perfectly dense. Butterscotch Pudding: Delicious but a little too sweet for my taste buds. To be fair, I'd actually give Jar 2.5 stars (largely because of the deliciousness of the haricot vert and the desserts, and giving no credit to the crappy pot roast), but there is no way to do that on Yelp. The interior is gorgeous. It is a bit loud, but not in an annoying way - just in a "this is a busy place - and people are talking amongst each other" way. It was just fine. The Beatles played all night. Perfection. Service started off wonderful, but slowed significantly. At one point, we had a problem with our meal (the fries were ROCK HARD and inedible -- unless you wanted to break teeth) and the server was nowhere to be found. We never did report the problem because by that time, it had just been too long. The kale tastes like an old gym sock. Skip it. I've had great kale, but there is just no fixing bad kale. This was bad. Really bad. As in it might have been moldy bad. We started with salads: hubby got the caesar (yum) and I opted for the haricot vert salad. I almost licked my plate. If I could put the haricot vert salad chef in my pocket and taken him home with me so he could make this for me every day, I would have. The entree: on the advice of our server, we both ordered the pot roast. We knew Jar was known for its pot roast, and we're big fans of the stuff. This was not good pot roast. Half of it was fat. YUCK. The other half was overcooked and dry. Double YUCK. The broth it arrived in didn't help the dryness. And it was SMALL. I can't believe these people have the audacity to charge what they do for pot roast and deliver some tiny little thing that is smaller than the size of my 3 year old's fist. I felt ripped off. Dessert was a delicious treat. I never would have ordered butterscotch pudding except that the server raved about it like it was sent from above. Okay, maybe it was. Holy moly was that some delicious pudding! Easily the best I've ever had. Hubby ordered the chocolate paradise, and that was true to its name, as well. Warning: This review is a bit long and detailed! This place was alright. We went last night for Dine LA I have been wanting to go for a while and so we took the opportunity to go check it out. I feel that if your experience does not start off very good it can be difficult to pick back up from there. We got there early, there was 4 of us and we had a 8:30 reservation. so we went and sat at the bar, the bar was not very crowded and the Bartender was not super busy but it took him several minutes to come over and see if we want a drink or a menu or anything. We asked for cocktail menus and he handed us ONE. I asked him if we could have a few more and he handed us one more. At 14 bucks a drink I would think they could afford to make a few more cocktail menus so he wouldn't have to hold back on me. He was not super friendly either but we ordered our drinks, I got a sour berry as did my friend Carlos, April got a starburst and Reza got the spicy jalapenos margarita ( I think that is what it was called). His was not that good but the other two were. I decided to head to the restroom before we sat down and it was not very clean, their was toilet paper all over the floor and no seat covers, water all over the counter as well. I don't mind a not very clean bathroom at a dive bar but seriously this is supposed to be a nice restaurant. We were then seated and our waitress came up, she was super sweet and friendly. They brought us bread which was sourdough and quite delicious. Though Reza found a piece of ice in the center of his ( I guess they do not cook it but receive it semi frozen.) The Dine LA menu was as follows First Course Choices HARICOT VERT SALAD Haricot vert, roasted shiitakes, frisee and whole grain mustard dressing My Note: Reza got this and he really liked it, I tried it and thought it was okay. LITTLE GEM CAESAR Little Gem romaine, caesar dressing, buttered croutons, shaved parmesan my note: I got this is was your average Caesar, nothing to write home about. SOUP OF THE DAY Second Course Choices It was something with Celery root: April and Carlos got this and both enjoyed it I thought it had potential but a little lacking in flavor. We also ordered the Crab Deviled Eggs appetizer. It was pretty good, they used horseradish in the deviled egg which was a nice twist But the crab was pretty pointless in my opinion. It was was overpowered by the egg. Second course COQ AU VIN Braised chicken, red wine, applewood smoked bacon, pearl onions, and crimini. Note: I got this, it was pretty good, the chicken was very juicy and tender. I wish it had more bacon in it though :) JAR'S SIGNATURE POT ROAST Pot roast, carrots, and caramelized onions. My Note: Reza got this and I tried it. It was really good! PRIME SKIRT STEAK Prime skirt steak served with your choice of sauce, French fries, and braised black kale. Note: April got and said she liked it, I didn't try it. the second course meals were pretty big! Third Course Choices CHOCOLATE PARADISE Chocolate cake and chocolate mousse, topped with whipped cream. Note: I ordered this, being a chocolate feign I always end up going towards it, but this was pretty lame. Boring taste and nothing to write home about. We had dinner here last week and had a great experience overall. We were able to make 8 pm reservations for a Friday night earlier that same day on Yelp, which made it easy. When we arrived a few minutes early, they were gracious about getting us seated right away. Everyone really enjoyed their food. Two of us ordered the salmon, which had a perfect sear. Another really enjoyed the chicken, which has excellent flavor is and more than your average restaurant roasted chicken! The side dishes were actually stars, from the fresh and not greasy duck fried rice to the purple yams. I would suggest trying both. While I unfortunately cannot recall our waiter's name, he was friendly and attentive. Service was good overall. Despite some off reviews here, I recommend Jar! read more

Good Evening Yelpers, My friends and I went to Jar last night. I wore a sweater and jeans. I felt completely underdressed. But hey, if the hostess said nothing then I guess all's cool in the Jar. Parking: Valet or meter Atmosphere: Classy. Don't come in looking like a vagrant or anything. Just look halfway decent, Service: Top notch. I can't say anything negative about them. They are attentive, polite, and efficient. Truly great staff. My boss failed to make a reservation....(DO MAKE A RESERVATION)...but the manager or host (guy in the nice suit) sat us for a table of 6 with the condition we finish by 745PM (It was 530). Food. I wish I could recall the app. It was battered and fried squash. I think. But oh so good. My main course was Prime Rib Eye with a side of Fries and Creamed Spinach. Delicious just doesn't encapsulate it. It was phenomenal. I love Flemmings but this is pretty damn good too. Everyone enjoyed their entrees. How did I know? They were quiet when eating it. Not easy with these guys. From the Pot Roast to the Sole, everything rocked. Price: They print their prices on their website. You can be the judge. Again I eat at Flemings so yes I'll pay $$$ for a good steak. But if you want cheap steak go to Black Angus or grill one in your backyard. Jar has been a success even before Suzanne Tracht was on Top Chef Masters. Set in a pretty small space, jar has sort of an art deco feeling with the panels on the wall and lighting, but sort of reminds me of a throwback to the 70's with the wood paneling surrounding the dining room. But, I don't come here for decor, I come for the food. The beet salad is a great way to start any meal. Roasted baby beets with arugula and roquefort is an almost perfect combination. The salad is lightly dressed in a balsamic vinaigrette. The beets with blue cheese takes this to another dimension. The pot roast is slowed cooked for many hours and just melts in your mouth. The onions are sweet like candy after being braised for hours, and the red wine reduces to a perfect sauce. The Kansas City steak is nicely dry aged and topped with herb butter. I've always been a fan of dry aged steaks as it seems to impart more flavor than steaks that have been wet aged. The bone also gives the beef an added boost of flavor. The banana cream pie was sort of a disappointment. A small individual pie filled a mound of filling looks appealing, but seems to be missing something. Fresh slices of banana are mixed with whipped cream topped with a caramel sauce. The whipped cream seemed a little bland and the pie was lacking in sweetness. We went on a double date to Jar during DinaLA week. The girls (me and my friend) were SUPER excited because we've been big fans of Suzanne Tracht and wanted an excuse to pierce the OC curtain. We were about 15 minutes late to our reservation - we had called ahead to inform the hostess. Rather than reprimand us, she very politely asked us to arrive ASAP because the rest of the evening was booked. We still ended up waiting for about 10-15 minutes upon arrival. But that gave us the chance to hang out at the bar. My Grey Goose tonic was well-balanced and those potato chips were super salty but divine! Overall the food was great. For starters, the crab deviled eggs were fantastic - best version I've ever had. We also ordered the special appetizer of the day - squash blossoms stuffed with lobster. The order came with three pieces but I was kind of miffed when I saw another table (2 people) get five pieces, especially since we had a party of 4. Lucky! They were good - anything deep fried is good, I would say... Our friends who ordered the chia siu pork bun bites enjoyed them immensely as well. I loved my lobster broth while hubby thought it was a little TOO lobstery. Our entrees were our favorite part of the evening. The pot roast melted under our knives. Hubby's chopped sirloin topped with a sunny side up egg was 100% beefy goodness. We also got some sides - duck fried rice (blech, the rice was hard and dried up...almost an insult to an Asian person!), sauteed chanterelles (my favorite side of the evening), Japanese purple yam (delicious with the creme fraiche topping), and pea sprouts (tender and yummy). Service was good - our server was very friendly and personable. She did forget my drink order but I give points for honesty: I prefer "I'm sorry, I forgot." rather than "Yes, the bartender is in the process of harvesting the limes out back so there's a slight delay." as she runs off to hurriedly place the order. Bonus points for snagging us some chips from the bar! We had a small disappointment at dessert when we were told the banana cream pie was no longer available. Our server suggested the butterscotch pudding which we enjoyed much more than the chocolate pudding that was on the prix fixe menu. Our overall experience was enjoyable (minus the traffic going to LA from OC). Next time we go back, we know what to avoid! Just be prepared for a somewhat lengthy meal - but then, good things do come to those who wait! read more

VERY UNACCOMMODATING! I live walking distance to Jar. I really want to love this restaurant but after last night's experience, I don't. Don't get me wrong, this food is what others have raved about, great! ie. 4 or even 5 star level. It is expensive. Fine. The teaser is an open table certificate. Okay, I hadn't realized it required "two" people to attend. Hate when stuff discriminates the single diner. It expires in a few days and I am going out of town and won't be able to use it in time so I ask if I can just use the base value. They acknowledge expired opentables are worth face value. Still they say NO since I need to wait till Monday then I can use the expired coupon. WTF?!? Why can't I use it now? No good explanation other than these interestingly created rules are not consumer friendly simply business being a business. Yes it is tough times, and yes this is an expensive restaurant. What a mistake coming here. There are enough great food options nearby, like Mortons, Lawrys, Mastros. I've learned my lesson from a user unfriendly restaurant like Jar. I am rather sad but it is what it is. Conclusion, there is a saying that the customer is always right. Well at Jar the customer is NEVER right. A great experience is not simply great food but great ACCOMMODATING service which unfortunately you will likely not get here. Editorial: Open table's Spotlight deals like this are not worth it. You only get teased into coming and you still pay a lot. Decor & Ambiance - LOVE it. Contemporary Retro. Finally, my type of restaurant. It is dim in here, but not dark like in most restaurants these day - which is a major pet peeve. Bread - probably the more memorable complimentary breads that I've had in a long time. Warm, fresh, chewy. I had to ask for seconds. Butter lettuce salad - good starter, fresh, and light Pot Roast - we had to try because this is their signature dish, but what's the hype about? It was good for the most part but I was a little bored with it. As you can see from my pic, it doesn't come with much other than a couple of carrots. Salmon - was better. Good size and served with a side of mashed potatoes, which I did not care for. Unless it's Thanksgiving or a steakhouse, all restaurants need to get rid of mashed potatoes from their menu. Dessert - Ice cream was better and I liked that the syrups were on the side in its own container. I very much appreciate it when they come separately instead of drizzled on top for me. Anyway, the butterscotch pudding was so rich and was like eating butterscotch flavored butter. This was so decadent, we couldn't even finish half of it. What a hidden gem of Los Angeles. I've never have heard of Jar until this past weekend when we were invited to a dinner party. Fabulous place to gather and eat good food, experience impeccable service and lovely ambiance. For a party of 10 they catered to us and all of our food requests, their wine list was great, the chef even came out to greet us! Saw a piece about the Char Siu pork chop and decided to travel across town to try it; best decision I could have made. Perfectly prepared right down to the small roasted onion on the side; side note, the sweetness of the onion compliments the Pork chop so don't dismiss it as a simple condiment such as parsley. Side dish of Duck fried rice rounded out my meal. Lucio recommended a Cabernet which at first I was skeptic but wow! My only regret was that I didn't have room to finish it all. This is a great place for people who don't cook at home and are craving the standard comfort food repertoire. But if you make this food yourself frequently you may feel underwhelmed. We started with the stuffed squash blossom tempura special. The tempura was nicely done but we didn't like the dipping sauce very much although it did add the acidic touch needed. We then shared the scallops which were perfectly cooked and seasoned but again the accompanying condiment sauce was not great. In this case it was a briny salty caper concoction that overpowered the delicate scallops. The famous pot roast was actually a boneless short rib slow braised in wine and onions and other savory elements. It was good but not in any way a particularly creative version of this dish. Mashed potatoes were underseasoned, the pea tendrils were nice but also yearned for salt. The star of the side show was the slow cooked beet greens. All in all, we had a solid meal and an enjoyable time but I personally prefer to go to places that bring a more invigorating level of creativity to the interpretation of classic dishes. Went here on a date and it was romantic. There is ample parking after 8PM on a weekday. The tomato soup was delicious. I would say out of this world, but nothing I can't find at Trader Joes. The steak was chewy. My jaw hurt by the end of the night. At some points, I was concerned that would accidently choke. I was greatly disappointed since this is supposed to be a steak house. I've developed a lady crush on Chef Suzanne Tracht after watching her talent on TV and then getting the chance to meet her, when she happened to come into my work. I finally made it there, and boy did it deliver! The food was amazingly delicious and flavorful, every last bite! I had the chopped sirloin with fried egg and the special butternut squash, and my fiancee had the signature pot roast with duck fried rice! The staff was friendly and attentive, and not too snootie, which is always a plus! With the two entrees, two sides, a glass of pinot grigio, and a cocktail, we put out roughly $125, with tip. After yelping around for Sunday brunch, we decided upon Jar, cuz the Lobster Benedict ($16) looks soooo good on the page, but when ours arrive, the lobster definitely shrunk, unlike what we saw posted. Did the lobster down-sized under the economy meltdown, too? Nonetheless, the flavors are well paired, Asian tinged French. Never would thought to put chashu pork and pea tendrils, which are 2 ingredients we eat often, one with rice, the latter in soup. Give them accolade for creative thinking. Jar Chopped Salad chicken, parma ham, fennel, onion, green olive, cabbage, feta ( 1/2 order available) ($13/7) was left almost untouched. House Cured Salmon, cucumber salad, bagel and cream cheese ($16), looks impressive with a full spread of salmon slices. My friend cleaned the plate so must be good. We also luv the walnut crumb cake, like Tony C., they even gave us 2nd. The place is like a chamber with hardly any window, so feel walled in and too formal for brunches. Let's start with the bad! I've probably had better service at Denny's than this place. First of all, they only have one person manning the valet parking, so it takes forever to valet and get your car back. Tons of cars just unattended with engine still running! I should've left with a new Mercedes!!!! But I don't want to go to jail! =) Next, they promptly seated us, but they put us in the back restaurant, right next to the restrooms! Bleh! The service was inattentive, it took about 10-15 minutes for them to finally take our order. Throughout the entire dining experience outside of bring our food, they've probably checked up on us 1-2 times. Service was just overall horrible. If I averaged in the service rating, this place would be about 2.5 stars! Now the important stuff... the food. The food was excellent! This was my second time at a Tracht restaurant. We came here for the Blackboard Eats pre-fix meals, and this was one of the better pre-fix meals I've had. I'll run them down individually: Bread: Sourdough Bread I was starving so the bread tastes great. Its sourdough, I like sourdough. It's not hot, but I think it's baked at the restaurant. The butter, oh so soft and spreadable!! Appetizer: Soup of the Day: Lobster with Tomato (without cream) Soup This was solid in flavor. You can completely the essence of lobster! Tasty. Slight tomato flavor, but overall, you just drinking lobster! It didn't have lobster meat, but I don't care for lobster anyways. Side: Mashed Potatoes and Pea Tendrils Mashed potatoes are so SMOOTH and sour creamy and slightly herb. I wish it was more buttery, but it tasted more like a sour cream and chive baked potato, but what really stands out is how SMOOTH it was!! The pea tendrils were the worst thing (besides the service) all night. It was bland, plain, and in huge pieces, and so hard to manage. Chinese restaurants cook this vegetable much better. Dipping it in the pot roast juice made it better, but it was still too ordinary and difficult to manage. Entree: Signature Pot Roast After waiting 2 years (since her other restaurant wasn't serving the signature pot roast that night) Oh man!!! Where do I start!? To keep it concise... it's delicious home-style, simple, yet sophisticated at its best! It has the homie-taste but also has something about the complexity of the flavors that you can only get a nice restaurant. The meat is tender and fatty enough with a slight under salted flavor, but when it takes a bath in the juice it takes it to the next level and adds another layer and gives it the right saltiness and flavor. The meat is also "broiled" to have a nice crust. I really loved the flavors of this dish. My brother ordered the black peppercorn New York steak. The steak was cooked perfectly. The steak itself, you can taste the flavors of beef, but with the crust it heightens the flavor and adds the texture. Dessert: Butterscotch pudding The dessert is very sweet. I like butterscotch flavor, the flavor was very intense. If you like it as well, you'll like this. The texture is so smooth as well. Overall, I love this type of cuisine (New American, simple), it's about the ingredients, and how simple the flavors come together. My rating of only 3 stars for Jar requires some explanation, as the food we had ranged from good to excellent. Partly it's because I am trying not to award 4 or 5 stars to place that I have visited only once, and partly it is because--despite the excellent food--I can't see Jar becoming a go-to restaurant for me or even a first choice splurge (like Mozza in LA or Chez Panisse in Berkeley). First things first: the idea behind Jar is to update the classic midcentury, upscale steakhouse theme such as might have been frequented by Hollywood luminaries in the 40s through the early 60s. The décor is a beautifully understated take on the glamour of old establishment restaurants from that era whose later days I remember from my childhood. It is an American sophistication at its best without the stuffiness that sometimes got in the way of enjoyment. The ambient noise was a bit loud on the evening we were there, for dinner with my parents visiting from out of town, but not so loud as to impede conversation. The service is excellent. Our waiter was knowledgeable, attentive, and though he looked handsome and stylish enough to be an aspiring actor (as did most of the staff), he was consummately professional in explaining the specials, advising us on quirks of the house, and seeing that water and wine glasses were refilled and empty plates removed with alacrity. For starters, we shared an order of the crab deviled eggs and the crab cakes among the 4 of us. Deviled eggs, properly done, are consummate comfort food--creamy, tangy, and harkening back to picnics and cocktail parties. These were delicious, with the crab adding just that hint of difference. The crab cakes were almost entirely crabmeat, sweet, succulent, and perfectly cooked, with a tiny salad of frisée, fennel, and tarragon as a contrast. I had the fluke special, which our waiter had described as delicious but slightly fishy. In fact, it was a perfectly delicate white fish with a crisp buttery exterior and tender, sweet flesh with a sauce of brown butter and chopped caper berries on the side. The flank steak was perfectly done medium rare, seared on the outside and tender with slight chewiness on the inside, extremely flavorful. The honey mustard sauce that came with it was a little bland, but the steak really didn't need any enhancement. The lamb shank was braised in what I recognized as a Chinese red braise, which is to say mostly soy with a bit of star anise. It was a wonderful twist on the lamb shank, though as other reviewers have noted, it could have used a bit more salt. The lamb shank was huge, by the way. General notes on the quirks of the restaurant: braised and otherwise slow-cooked meats are a specialty, often with a slight pan-Asian twist, such as the red braise or hints of ginger & star anise. The texture of the braised dishes the is flawless, though sometimes they could use more salt, and salt and pepper are not automatically on the table. Most of the main dishes do not come with a side dish automatically, although steaks and various cuts of roasted meat come with a choice of dipping sauces from an extensive selection. There are a number of set vegetable or starch side dishes, as well as some specials. We had the roasted asparagus, which were large stalks of peeled asparagus roasted to a delightful crispness on the outside and with a hint of butter. Luckily the beet greens were available that night. These are stewed or braised with what seemed like smoky bacon, comparable to the best collard greens I've ever had the South. Frankly, I could've made entire meal of about 2 orders of the beet greens and some of the sourdough bread and been quite happy. 2 or 3 side dishes are easily enough for 4 people, depending on how hungry you are and whether you've had starters. The dessert menu is fairly limited, but reputed to be good. Our consensus was that the butterscotch pudding completely blew away their "signature" chocolate pudding. The latter was a well executed but fairly standard chocolate mousse sort of the dish, while the butterscotch pudding was an intense flavor of caramelized burnt sugar infused into a creamy base, reminiscent of the famous burnt sugar ice cream at Herrell's in Boston. So why only 3 stars? Price and value. The food ranged from good to great, but except for the beet greens and the butterscotch pudding (and perhaps the first few bites of my fluke), it was not amazing. Everything on the menu is à la carte, with the least expensive main dish starting around $25. My father noted that a $40 bottle of wine he'd recently purchased was listed at well over $100. Our tab came to nearly $100 per person, for a main dish each, sharing 3 appetizers, 3 desserts, and 2 side dishes among the four of us. I'll pay that for amazing food, but not so satisfied here for the price. read more

I've always liked Jar. Ten years ago I had the most amazing pork chop in my life--perfectly cooked and seasoned, and so damn full of flavor. So five years later I went back and it was the same--brilliant. So I've been meaning to go back, but didn't until my companion pulled out her Gilt City coupon for brunch. Brunch? Isn't Jar more of an even place for an elegant meal? Well, yes. Weird to be in swank place so early, so the vibe was off. But unlike the Yelpers here describing several nightmares in ranting detail, our brunch wasn't bad at all. The lobster benedict was good, albeit missing some kick, and the pot roast hash was good and plenty for two (considering all the items on the prix fixe Gilt City menu. We had a Bellini and Bloody Mary, both good. And while the starter pecan bread was dry, the Butterscotch pudding and Strawberry Rhubarb crumble were first rate. Given that it was a limited Gilt City menu, it was a very good deal. No issues with service, either. So while brunch is about 3 stars, I trust that when I go back for dinner and the vibe is on, it'll live up to the 4 stars it has always earned in my heart and stomach. read more

Review # 300! Been wanting to try Jar since Suzanne Tracht did well on Top Chef Masters. Cocktails: Sourberry (Ketel and muddled strawberries, lime, simple syrup), Koh Samui (ketel and lychee juice), Spa Water (gin, muddled cucumbers), Clean and Serene (uhh I don't remember what was in this cocktail other than mint and it being my least favorite). Entree: Jar signature pot roast. The meat could have been a bit more flavorful, but was really tender and well cooked. I also tried my friends' Coq au Vin which was actually my favorite. The chicken was so moist, juicy, and flavorful. The red wine sauce and the crimini mushrooms were all delicious. The lemongrass chicken was just okay although the chicken was cooked well. The lemongrass flavor was definitely strong. Someone else got the lamb shank, which was okay but then again I'm not a huge fan of lamb so... Sides: Was debating between the kabocha squash puree or the Japanese purple yams and was recommended the yams. Got the yams and I didn't think it was great. Informed my server and he brought out the kabocha squash, which was better (although I continued to taste the yams and they started to grow on me). Other sides were fries (crispy and flavorful), creamed corn (which was also good). Desserts: Everyone was so full that no one really wanted dessert except one person. It was his bday the next day so I told him to treat himself and get both. The ice cream sundae was okay..nothing spectacular but the banana cream pie was REALLY good. Came out to be close to $100 for me..but that was because we had a party of 10 and tax/gratuity was like 20/person... Note to self..do NOT go fine dining with that many people (when you are on a budget) if you don't really even know some of the people in the party. read more

After all the years in business Jar is still one of the best restaurants in LA There is outside seating with heaters and the inside space is available with lots of social distancing and portions of the restaurant still out of bounds. Good food is an understatement , fresh simple quality ingredients prepared impeccably is the standard here. Why not 5 stars ??? Last night my two friends and I visited Jar to celebrate my birthday. Let me start by giving credit where credit is due. The service from Jessica B was outstanding: knowledgeable, delightful, attentive are only a few ways to describe her. The food was great, I had the short rib. My friend's pork shank special came out cold, which was a bit disappointing but the flavor was on point. Now, to start with the nightmare that was Jar Restaurant. We intended to pay our bill with two $100 gift certificates given to us years ago by a dear (reliable I might add) friend. We provided our certificates and patiently waited as we were told the host had to review and "look them up". After about ten minutes our server, Jessica B, kindly popped by to update us saying it would only be a little longer. After approximately another ten minutes we were approached by a young woman who did not introduce herself but we later found her name to be Renata the manager. Renata informed us that the certificates were "not their's", she went on a lengthy dissertation about why they were "not from Jar". The certificates we brought were numbered 245 & 246 and the one that Renata held in her hand as reference was number 1956. She claimed the certificates issued by Jar started at number "1000" and issued on a glossy stock of paper (our certificates were more a flat finish). Now, this restaurant opened in 2001 and Renata could only recall gift certificates back ten years, and bear in mind Renata has only been working for Jar for three years. So, this led us to question whether or not Jar was being truthful, it seemed they merely did not want to honor our gift certificates because they are older. We then asked to speak with the owner, Suzanne, knowing she was onsite. After waiting another 30 minutes still no Suzanne, still no answer. By this time Renata comes back to our table with our certificates and she tells us they cannot be accepted because they are "fake". Her tone has now shifted to a condescending one as if we intentionally walked into Jar to try and "scam" them, treating us as less-than and telling us the owner refuses to speak with us. I would imagine as a patron of an establishment when one asks to speak with the owner, knowing they are present, the owner would oblige such a request and come speak to their patrons...I mean either way we were going to pay for the meal, but we would've liked to have an answer straight from the horse's mouth (for lack of a better term) as to whether or not our certificates could be used and an answer as to WHY they will not be accepted. Once again we walked into this place with the thought that we could use these certificates as money to pay for our food. After an hour of this insanity we gave up on the certificates and we paid with our credit cards. We then find out from Renata that they have called the POLICE on us!!! LUDICROUS. The owner Suzanne refused to even walk in our direction to talk with us but has the audacity to call the local authorities?? All the while, I'd like to add, our server, Jessica B, continued to stop by and apologize profusely for everything (we took care of her with the tip). We left Jar only to realize we forgot our paid receipts at the hostess desk. So, we went back to retrieve what was rightfully ours. As we approached the front door the owner, Suzanne, is standing outside and mutters to her colleague "is that them?". Once we approach the door Suzanne starts to bark obscenities at us in a deranged fit telling us to "Get the f**k out of my restaurant", we gently responded to her with "How professional of you to address us now in this obscene manner rather than to come speak with us when we asked for you hours ago" and with a smug look on her face she says "You're scammers!". We had also asked Renata for our certificates back and she REFUSED to return them with a smirk on her face! In closing, the treatment by these people was subhuman. We were given gifts and we were just as shocked as they were when they told us they were "fake", they refused to give us any proof of this aside from the new, glossy certificate they held in their hand as reference. All I can deduce is this restaurant probably isn't doing so well financially and they didn't want to honor our gift certificates that were issued at the advent of their establishment. I will never return here, and I will never suggest to anyone I know to visit this establishment. With so many choices in Los Angeles I'm happy to take all of my business elsewhere. I went to Jar last night and it was really good! Yes, I know last night was a Monday night and they are closed on Monday nights but this was a private dinner and this review still counts. Why does it count? Because the pot roast coming out of the their kitchen on any night is still their pot roast coming out of their kitchen! So, I have been to Jar many times before, through all of their evolutions and incarnations and each time they were very good. Last night was no exception, they were still very good. The tuxedo I was wearing didn't make the food any better or worse. It was just Jar doing what it does best and that is comfort food. They are the "Doctors" of comfort food. The Asian pear apple salad, the scallops with avocado, the duck fried rice and of course the pot roast were really really good. The grand finale was the butterscotch pudding with salted caramel whipped cream and that was killer good. What a wonderful dinner - period. Will it ever earn a Michelin star, no. Was it just very yummy and happy and tasty food.......a resounding YES! read more

I went to Jars last weekend! And can I just say OMg, this place is amazing!! Best Chophouse by far! And I'm a sucker for steak! Overall the experience and food at Jar was splendid. The ambiance and decor was pretty amazing, great vibes and awesome place to people watch while having a drink. "Celeb' watch too" lol -let's start on the menu!!! *french fries- omg! Their fries are so darn fresh you bite into the soft crispy potato and taste every piece of garlic and parsley seasoned on to them, it's like you're in heaven! Ha *Crab deviled eggs- wow! These babies were nothing like I've ever had, they were amazing! *Black Mussel-SOoo fresh and flavorful These were good. *Steamed colossal Asparagus- wow can you say fresh?!! Perfectly fresh and steamed. *purple yams- Wow! These are backed to taste! So sweet and delicious! I just recommend sour cream and chives on the side:-/ *Long cooked black Kale-it was yuMm *Farmers Market Cherry Tomato, burrata, pesto-The pesto made this sOoo good! *Creamed Corn- cooked amazing well! ****Prime Filet of Beef (10 ounces) -OMg!!!! We found this place on one of the LA best lists. It was listed as one of the best Sunday Brunch places to eat at. So we decided to make a reservation and try out the place. The restaurant is located right off of a main street (Beverly Blvd.) and right by the residential areas. We were able to find street parking pretty easily since it was a Sunday morning on July 4th weekend. Once you walk inside, the place is nicely decorated and they have the Sunday papers and the gossip trash magazines for you to read while you eat your huge breakfast. It kinda felt like a cozy business environment. People were dressed up to eat there even though it was an early Sunday morning. We had the following: - Lobster Benedict, two poached eggs, Char Sui pork, pea tendrils, lobster béarnaise (yummmmmmmmms! I love poached eggs and to have it with lobster... yums! The Char Sui pork was huge in size but still good.. ) - Jar's Signature Pot Roast Hash two eggs, potatoes, onions, peppers,mushrooms, coffee gravy (yummy! ) - Complementary coffee cake (sooooooooo good!) Everything had great flavor and HUGE portions. I was basically full for the entire day from that one meal. If I lived in LA, I'd eat here every Sunday and be 300 pounds. This not so much a review of specific dishes as it is a thank you to Jar and their staff for a wonderful evening. As COVID restrictions eased and allowed take out and outdoor dining, we started trying out several highly-rated restaurants around town to start reconnecting with the our world again. Although most of them were quite good and at times excellent, we were occasionally unimpressed with particular dishes or experienced inconsistent quality from visit to visit. Around the end of March we were itching to expand our rotation of places to eat or take out, but had run out of ideas. So we pulled out our past copies of Jonathan Gold's 101 and came across Jar. How they were not on our radar all these years, I don't know. But our first visit was wonderful, and we have returned ever since, mostly forgoing many of the other places in our rotation. As for last night, we have one circle of friends with one couple who had moved out of state many years ago but that we have kept in touch with. The husband passed away during the pandemic (but not from COVID), but the family decided against holding a memorial until it became safe to do so. Others in the circle had also lost family members relatively recently. So when some of the family decided to visit LA this summer, we wanted to host a get together to see each other after a long hiatus and to remember those we lost. So at our previous visit to Jar we inquired about reserving a table for 11 people outdoors. We were told that the maximum table was for 8, but they could seat us at adjacent tables. Not ideal, but not really a problem, kind of analogous to hosting a multi-table banquet at a Chinese restaurant, but at a smaller scale. We also booked for 7:30 pm hoping that we would be less likely to be shooed out after the 90 minute limit! When we arrived we found that they had indeed set one table for 11 people, thumbs up! And we were able to stay until just as they were starting to close up. From start to finish, it was a most successful and meaningful evening, excellent food, atmosphere, and the most welcoming service from everyone from the receptionist, servers, busboys, and especially our waiter, Kevin, who has served us at most of our previous visits. And kudos to the unseen kitchen staff. Keep up the great work, and we will return! read more

I'm giving this review on a curve (one extra point) because it was delivered via Postmates (pandemic) and the restaurant has no control over how that affects quality. I've ordered this place twice during quarantine and here's what I've had: Kimchi Brussel Sprouts - Not the best brussel sprouts I've had, not the worst either. I definitely got more kimchi then brussels in my order. I love both ingredients but they didn't match as well as I thought they would Char Sui Baby Back Ribs - The meat was great, great meat:fat ratio, just wish there was a little more flavor in terms of seasoning/sauce. BBQ Lamb Ribs With Apricot Sauce - Great meat texture. But while I was looking for stronger flavors with the pork _ i found the flavors on this dish were too strong. The apricot BBQ sauce was really overwhelming and masked a lot of the lamb texture. Jar Burger - Best thing I had from them, it was great. One of the best meat textures I've ever gotten on a burger, with a great char. It was enough to make me dismiss a lot of my dissatisfaction over everything else. The awesome burger did a lot of redemption here, but also the price was wayyyy to steep for the quality of what was offered. read more
