We went to Ysabel for my wife's birthday and it's a pretty perfect birthday spot if you're parents looking to feel like you actually went out on the town. Especially if you live in the Valley and rarely go over the hill after 6pm. Ysabel has been on our radar as one of those celebrity/Instagram-friendly spots, and the space is the first thing that stands out. You enter through a small, tunnel-like corridor off busy Fairfax, with almost nothing visible from the street. Then you walk in and feel transported. The patio is a must with its twinkly trees, candles, white booths, marble tables and enough LA-ness to make the night feel a little special. We were honestly happy just being there on a beautiful summer evening. The cocktails were delicious and very aesthetic, though not exactly strong for our tolerance levels. Maybe that says more about us than the drinks. Still, delicious. We mostly ordered seafood and everything was solid for a three-dollar-sign restaurant. Good, but nothing life-changing. The warm apple pie-style dessert in a cute cast-iron pan with maple ice cream was excellent and probably the highlight. We went at 6pm on a Wednesday, so it wasn't too busy, which we liked. But as we were leaving, it started to pick up and we realized a little more people energy and people-watching would've been nice. Service was fine, but not especially warm. Our waitress did her job, but she started off pretty low-energy and only became more engaging toward the end. Food came out relatively quickly, though. I gave it 4 stars mainly because the service lacked a little enthusiasm. But if you're celebrating something special and don't mind spending $100+ per person, Ysabel is definitely that spot. read more

Years and years ago, this place used to be IT. Ysabel was popppppping on the weekends, and attracted groups and groups of people living their best LA life. The food was great, the vibes were there, and the decor added to the swanky ambiance. I even remember all of the pictures we'd take in front of their iconic wall of faces! I still have them, and they serve as souvenirs of wonderful memories... Good times. I recently went back to Ysabel on a Friday night and it was much different than what I remember. The environment was quiet, it was about 1/5 full if not a little less, and the food was just okay. It reminded me a bit of Lavo, just before they announced they were shutting business down. Ysabel was unfortunately not great about accommodating a food allergy at our table. Other restaurants swap ingredients or make suggestions or offer up alternatives, but Ysabel pointed out a couple of sides and deterred us from most of the menu. Not the best experience. The food we tried was okay... nothing to write home about, nothing I felt I had to come back for ASAP, and especially not for their price point. Disappointing but not all that surprising - seems like another LA place that has lost its way a bit through the years, especially post-COVID. Valet parking is your best bet here. read more

It's usually crowded so would definitely need to make a reservation, however, you can chill in the bar (they have 2 inside bars) or by the stairs while waiting. Cocktails are a piece of art! I had cactus and it was absolutely amazing! Atmosphere is very nice and even feels slightly private, even though place is super crowded (probably table that are far-ish from each other help). I was having trouble finding a birthday dine spot, and I came across this beautiful gem. From start to finish I've got to say it was one of the best experiences I have had at a restaurant in awhile. The server was super knowledgeable and broke down the menu as first timers, I ordered the miso salmon and my boyfriend had their vodka pasta with chicken. We both were in awe of these two plates, the miso salmon was packed with flavor and paired so well with their "black forbidden rice." The vodka pasta had the perfect kick to it. Our drinks were delicious! I ordered the something about cherry drink, which was a vodka based cocktail (not my usual) , but I wanted to try something other than a margarita. As an appetizer we got the spicy tuna tartar, which is served on crispy rice. Wasn't the best I've had and was kind of pricy, but was solid. For my friend's birthday, they were able to put together a small dessert which was molten chocolate cake with ice cream. They have a lot of staff that were attentive to our table. This included people designated to refilling waters, which was needed several times because their water glasses were so small. One small comment I would have is that their metal chairs were uncomfortable for dining for close to 2 hours, and we would have much preferred another seating option. read more

I try to never leave negative reviews. Despite the fact that their food was subpar in relation to their price, their service rushed, the ambiance loud. Despite the fact that I saw how their valets mistreated a lady walking her dog. I had it when last Sunday they blasted music until 2am, not loud, it was almost like a war zone. After exploring a few options, my friends and I decided to dine at Ysabel for a birthday dinner. Unfortunately, the experience didn't start off well. Upon arrival, our group of five stood waiting several minutes without being greeted. Eventually, I had to ask a passing staff member how we could get seated. The host who finally helped us was not particularly welcoming -- we felt judged, which immediately set the wrong tone for the evening. Thankfully, our server (ginger/red hair) turned the experience around a bit. She was lovely and kind -- as were the staff who brought out our food. We ordered the lemon pasta and rigatoni. The lemon pasta was a 10/10 -- creamy, bright, and perfectly balanced with the right amount of lemon. The rigatoni was an 8/10, rich and flavorful. The cocktails were also beautifully crafted -- the Daisy & She's the Cherry (10/10). However, after finishing our meal and paying, we stopped by the exit to take some pictures together. The hosts appeared visibly bothered and stood behind the host stand whispering and staring at us, which felt uncomfortable and unnecessary. Overall, while the food and drinks were excellent, the lack of warmth and professionalism from the front-of-house staff really took away from what could've been a great dining experience. My server, Sunshine, was lovely. She was super helpful when describing the dishes I was considering. She definitely didn't lead me astray! I was seated promptly, and the overall noise level was comfortable (Note: I dined around 7 PM on a Wednesday evening). What I ordered: Drink: The Something About Cherry -- I really enjoyed it. Appetizer: Brussels sprouts with kimchi sauce, mint, and pickled raisins. Entrée: Lobster ravioli with shrimp. Sunshine mentioned ahead of time that the ravioli didn't contain lobster chunks, so I added shrimp. In hindsight, I probably should've tried a different dish--it was just okay. On a positive note, the staff kindly offered to charge my phone, which they didn't have to do, and I really appreciated that gesture. I appreciate their attention to detail such as cleanliness, food presentation, hospitality, attentiveness, and menu knowledge. Yelp has three dollar signs, believe it. I think there's charcuterie board was like $46 or something. Yeeeaaaahhhh but hey my friend was paying so it worked for me haha! Rigatoni: flavorful, decent size, pretty presentation, very greasy if you're gonna take it home and eat it later! Steak 12 oz: this one I didn't try my friend ordered it. I believe she asked for well done and she thought it was too well done... I don't eat well done steak so I would probably recommend someone to order medium well. The drinks were great! We got harmony and I think something with a Cherry name. I would recommend this place, be prepared to spend at least $200. We ordered the crudo, crispy rice tuna tartare, wagyu yakitori, scallops, and rigatoni. Unfortunately, the wagyu was our least favorite; it was difficult to chew and didn't meet our expectations. Thankfully the crudo and tuna tartar truly hit the spot. The rigatoni featured a delicious, well seasoned sauce, though the pasta itself wasn't quite as delicate as I had hoped. The scallops however were prepared perfectly. The celery root puree elevated the dish even further, making each bite creamy, balanced and incredibly satisfying. We were impressed with this dish. For dessert we ordered the affegato which was a lovely way to end the evening. Not too sweet with a strong espresso that really hit the spot. The biscotti was unnecessary, as the espresso alone carried the dessert beautifully. My name is Ysabel so I was really excited to celebrate my 32nd birthday here. We drove from Vegas and made a trip out of it. Coming from a hospitality heavy city, I found the hostess to not be very welcoming. She kinda just... sat us. And that was that. Not really a greeting or small conversation. Not even a happy birthday. So we sat down and ordered 3 appetizers and 3 entrees and split it between 4 people. Brussel sprouts, tuna tartare, and wagyu yakitori as apps, the tomahawk, salmon & rigatoni. The Brussel sprouts were one of the best things we had, which I think says a lot. The blend of the kimchi sauce with mint and pickled raisins meshed together really well. The tuna tartare, while good, was just ordinary. The Serrano peppers had a nice kick to it. The wagyu Yakitori was decent as well. It had mushrooms on a skewer along with it and I preferred that. For wagyu, it wasn't as fatty as I'm used to. Now the entrees. I really liked the rigatoni. The noodles were cooked perfectly and the sauce was amazing! The salmon was cooked well. Had a nice crisp too it and the sauces paired well with it. The tomahawk was extremely underwhelming. Again, for a ribeye, there wasn't much flavor. And there wasn't any seasoning. It comes with a chimichurri & some other sauce but both of those were just as flavorless. We seasoned ourselves with the salt and pepper left on the table. It does come with arugula (really lemon-y) and grilled onion. I ended up wrapping my steak pieces in the onion to give it some flavor. Food 3/5 Service 3.5/5. Our waiter was nice. Didn't try to upsell anything, answered what ever questions we had on the menu. The food runners and bussers were pretty on it with clearing plates & refilled water. But again, the hostess kinda sucked. Ambience was prolly the only thing that was a 4/5.
