Although the food and service were great, the restaurant itself is somewhat overrated. We ordered the Jar Chopped Salad, Garlic French Fries, Prime Skirt Steak with Peppercorn sauce, and Lemongrass Chicken. The salad and fries were both amazing. If I were to choose between the steak and the chicken, I'd pick the steak. The Holy Water was a tasty cocktail, but skip it if you're also going to get dessert. Talk about an overload of sweets. For dessert, we got the Banana Cream Pie and the Grasshopper (which was a brownie/mint ice cream special for the day). Mmmm, both were rich and savory. The ambiance was over the top for a weeknight. I would have said it would be cute for a date, but there were a lot of business execs. Not your typical "see and be seen" type of Hollywood hotspot. Overall, I would recommend trying Jar once, but I wouldn't necessarily say I'm itching to go back. read more

It's been almost a year since we last went to Jar, and I'm still thinking about how horrible it was. We would have been better off going to a food truck or the UCLA cafeteria -- the food would have been just about as good (maybe better), for a fraction of the price. We had pot roast, which was too salty, overcooked and had crappy meat; some sort of rice noodle short rib dish, which had rice noodles that was so overcooked it was almost like rice porridge (although it looks like this is off their menu now, I can't remember whether it was a special); deviled eggs, which tasted fine but like the recipe hadn't been updated since the 80s; and kale, which was too salty. This is our favorite place! My wife and I come here on a regular basis and we are always happy with the food and service. The pot roast in a jar is unbelievable and so is the rib eye. Went for the first time to 'JAR' during dineLA week and wanted to know what all the hype was. Came in a group of six and we had an early reservation, which was a good thing as we were able to speak to each other. The longer the evening, the noisier the restaurant turned out to be and we were glad to leave. The menu for dineLA was ok, the lobster soup on a tomatoe base was very salty and a bit too spicy and not silky ( I know there was not a hint of cream). The steak was excellent and the small baked onion very delicious. I am not a sweet eater, but the caramel pudding with sea salt was excellent. Overall not too impressed, sorry. BRUNCH REVIEW: Jar has no end time for brunch posted on their site, but when I called they said the last seating is at 1:45p. When we walked in at 1:40p, it was half, maybe two-thirds full, and we were seated immediately. Another group arrived after we did, a little after 2p maybe, and no one gave them the stink-eye, so maybe the end time isn't posted because they're flexible. In any case, the meal was lovely. The waitress recommended the lobster Benedict ($16). My husband ordered that, while I ordered the Oven Baked Eggs ($13). The Benedict has large chunks of lobster on it and a lobster bearnaise, which is delightful. They use pea tendrils as their green, which impart a strong flavor similar to broccoli rabe. If you don't like strong, almost bitter greens, maybe ask for them to leave those off. A Florentine it ain't. I think they added a really nice contrast to the richness of the eggs and bearnaise, but that's me. The baked eggs I thought were actually better than the Benedict. You get two eggs, poached in a mixture of cream and truffle cheese. The presentation is simple and straightforward, and when you taste them, you see why they don't bother with much garnish. They're very creamy, rich but not heavy, and the cheese has just the right amount of salt for the dish. I scraped the bowl, it was so good. They served a slice of cinnamon pecan roll to start, before we'd ordered anything. It's a nice bonus, sweet but not cloying with lots of pecan bits. Just watch out for the drink prices. My mocha was six bucks, which I did not expect. Other than that, I didn't think the meal was outrageously priced, considering the restaurant and the ingredients. read more

I went to there for dinner on a friday night with my fiancé and girl friend. They were busy, but were still able to seat us with out a reservation. That was the only good thing I have to say about the place. The food was NOT good. We tried the Steak which was nothing special, they Pot roast (which is what they are supposed to be famous for) it was too fatty and gross. And finally I ordered that lamb shank which was smelly and gross. When I told the waiter I didn't like it and asked to send it back after having one bite she got her manager who came over and argued with me and asks me a million questions about why I didn't like the food! Wow - I was blown away by my dinner last night at Jar. This place has been in business for 17 years, I drive by it all the time, yet last night was my first time there. The decor is exquisite - wood paneled walls, chairs and light fixtures have a sleek mid-century modern feel. The noise level was just right - not too loud even when the place got super busy. The service was impeccable- the staff was available when needed and checked in but not overbearing. The food was wonderful: I had the special of Turbo fish and some side dishes. Everything tasted flavorful and not overpowered by sauce. An all-around top notch dining experience - I will definitely be back! read more

I joined yelp! just to write this review. We, for better or for worse, dine at most of Los Angeles' "top" and "hot" restaurants, and none have been more disappointing than Jar. We had a very early 6 p.m. reservation. The restaurant was at least 60% empty, yet we were given a tiny table in a terrible location. When we asked to be reseated, we were told this awful table was the "mogul table" and we were lucky to be seated there. It all became an unpleasant experience, ruining the entire meal for both of us. This is one of only two restaurants in LA where the staff has treated us as "unworthy" of dining there (the other is Dan Tana's). I strongly recommend against dining at Jar, regardless of the food, because the experience is just not worth it. read more

Jar's signature pot pie is well deserved to be their signature dish. Meat was tender and sauce was nice. Creamed spinach as a side was okay, not the best I've tried. However, braised oxtail was a bit disappointing. It comes with a sauce that was a bit too sweet and salty (more of a soy sauce taste) it is hard eat because the meat comes on the bone so it splatters on the braised sauce when you're trying to get in the bone for the meat. Portion is smaller than the pot pie. Great atmosphere and friendly service. Parking is inconvenient - vallet is $6 but if you go early you can find places to street park. read more

Its not often that I feel the need (yes need) to write a post. I am assuming Suzanne reads these posts rather than the little comment cards tucked into the check presenters at the end of the night. My colleague and I drove to Jar last night from Orange County after hearing much about Mz. Tract's illustrious Pig Roast. Suckling Pig is practically impossible to get in L.A., little alone done well. And if anyone is going to do it well it is this place. We had a 7:30 reservation made three weeks in advance, upon being seated we were told that the Pig was sold out. Excuse me? Apparently we were supposed to have read their minds and explicitly state for what reason we were dining on the ONE DAY ONLY PIG ROAST. Absurd. The Maitre'd made a half-assed attempt to appease us by offering other pork dishes in its place, which is hardly the point nor a sufficient substitution . Enter our server, Megan. Where our otherwise dismal night took a shiny turn. She not only somehow managed to secure our table portions of the suckling pig (when even the manager wouldn't) but wowed us in every other way possible. A standout of Jar is their wine menu, and though there was supposed to be a wine pairing with the event (surprise, there wasn't!), she suggested the perfect pairings, even though the suggestions were a little above our price limit, we listened and were SO glad that we did. First two courses were excellent. Baby back ribs with a tamarind sauce and an asian style pork dumpling in a light broth. By the time our entrees arrived the kitchen somehow sent us out a pork chop/shank. I asked where the suckling pig was, and the guy dropping the food told us we were looking at it. Again appalled. Megan quickly swooped in and corrected the error. And I mean, by this point the devil himself would have left us alone, I was fuming. She was gracious and professional, even making jokes to lighten our mood. Nevertheless, I will not be back for another of Jar's special events. I will however be back for the regular menu steaks and seafood. Making damn sure I request Megan as a server. She was honestly the best part of that place. read more

Finally get to eat at Jar. I've read and heard people rave about this restaurant and now I'm finally in. I chose to park on the street. It's free after 8pm on the weekdays so...why risk it with valet when you can park it yourself. Now back to the restaurant. It's nestled along Beverly blvd just a few blocks east of Beverly Center. I have driven by Jars many times never knowing it was there. Last night was our first dining experience here. We were greeted with enthusiasm and being that it was a Monday night, we got seated right away. The restaurant is spacious and medium full but there was no need for the host to sit us in the dark. Wonder if those window tables were reserved-but not for us. I'm not one to complain. However, I did like the privacy of the table we were given but still...why this table? Why so dark? I can't even get a good shot with my camera without pulling out the flash? I'd give more details on the décor, but again I just couldn't see. I could barely read the menu. BTW, the online menu prices are old...they've gone up since then. So if you see $65 for the porterhouse for two...its $110 and the Kansas City is now $49 and not forty. Sparkling water with free refills ($4) Nice cold refreshing sparkling water in a carafe. Appetizers: Fried Ipswich Clams ($17), cocktail sauce and roasted garlic tartar sauce - It has the texture of calamari; crunchy breading and chewy. You can barely taste the clam. The sauces didn't add anything extra to the clams other than hide the clam flavor. Good for two people but not enough for 3. Maine Lobster Cocktail, mango, harissa, lemongrass, and ginger. I think we got 1 ounce of lobster for ($18). This appetizer tasted exotic. The sweetness of mango and moderate spice of harissa (a fiery garlic and chili paste that hails from Tunisia) meshed well with the tanginess of lemongrass and ginger. Debating if the price justifies the experience. Soup: Tomato Lobster Soup ($12) No butter, no cream...straight up delicious. Main Dish Jar's Signature Pot Roast($29) - This is what everyone raved about and they're right. Braised short rib never tasted soo good. The tender meat, so juicy and tasty, just melted in your mouth. It's a must at Jars. Prime Kansas City Steak ($49). Tasted better elsewhere. Menu says 16oz...it looked like 12oz. Host recommended the Pepper sauce but the steak had enough pepper on it already. It's tasty and tender but nothing spectacular considering it's $49. I was expecting more. The service was attentive though the main dish took awhile. Tables are a little too close; so when the waiter was attending to the table next to us, his bottom was touching one of our appetizers. Anyway, they had a variety of wine selections. I had a 2004 Spanish red wine (Rioja) for $13/glass. Sides Braised Brussels Sprouts ($8)- interesting flavor. Can't describe the flavor. I think you have to like Brussels sprouts to enjoy this. Purple Yam, crème fraiche, chives($9) - This is Good. Try it. It's sweet and the modified sour cream topping just adds more to the experience. Again I just couldn't see what I was eating. Onion Rings, spicy aioli ($7)- we could have done without this dish. Nothing great. Duck Fried Rice($9) - brown rice fried with some vegetables and tender duck. Very unique taste and texture. Worth a try. Dessert Butterscotch Pudding($10)- Creamy, buttery, sweet and delicious. Banana Cream Pie($10) - Crispy crust, 3.5inch diameter, banana, whipped cream and more butterscotch flavor. You can see the pattern here. Regular Coffee($4/cup) Bottom line: $220 not including gratuity for two people. Thank God for Gift Certificates. Humm. No plans on coming again for dinner any time soon. This place has incredible gourmet food. It's great for a special occasion, but not many can afford to eat here on the regular. When I come with my boyfriend our bill is usually about $80 for the both of us. We always order the skirt steak, creamy spinach, crab deviled eggs, and the butterscotch pudding dessert. Food is to die for. Service can be a little snobby/catty, but that's probably expected with an upscale restaurant such as this. For the killer food alone, this place gets nothing leas than 5 stars! My partner and I had a holiday dinner with a couple friends of ours to decompress from the bustling holiday shopping day. The meal was exceptional. From the time we pulled up to valet, from the time we exited the restaurant, service was friendly and knowledgable and the food was exceptional. I've heard about the restaurant from mentions on Bravo's Top Chef Masters, L.A. Times, and even a scene from Modern Family was filmed there. *Occupancy is around 50-75. Interior design and lighting of the restaurant exuded a classy ambience. Booth seath along the walls and individual chairs across the table. Round tables available in the middle of the dining room. Service: The staff were all presentable and knowledgable. Specials were described with detail and told like a story. Provided recommendations for the wine when asked. Very attentive to each table and just improved the overal dining experience. Food: Wine list was decent. A nice mix for a variety of tastes. The food was great. Portions were just right and the design of the menu was perfect for the table to enjoy an entree and share sides if you preferred. The crab deviled eggs are not to be missed. Mashed potatoes, duck fried rice, brussel sprouts, and creamed spinach were all ordered at the table to accompany our entrees of lamb shank, filet mignon, and braised beef ribs. Cooked perfectly, and everyone at the table couldnt stop making "mmm" and "aahhh" sounds from the delicious food. Dessert of apple bread pudding and butterscotch pudding was a high note as well. How do people do a half star? If I could I would have given this place a 3 & 1/2 star. The steak WAS pretty tasty but I wasn't THAT impressed for the money. It's also very loud. The service was very attentive and the cocktails were very good. Overall, it was a nice experience. I love everything about this restaurant, from the modern decor and the bar area to the seating and staff. Everything was absolutely delicious, from the homemade potato chips with chive dip at the bar to the actual meal. You have to try the Bug Juice martini also, just because the name is fun to say! All of the salads on the menu (and the specials) sounded so amazing, my date and I had a hard time deciding. I went with the Belgian endive caesar and it was fabulous. Date had the Jar chop salad which looked awesome too. We both had steaks which practically melted in the mouth. The waiter recommended the lobster bernaise sauce and it was perfect. I am not a sauce person so the fact that I liked this should excite sauce enthusiasts! We were so stuffed that we couldn't fit dessert, but they had some pretty yummy selections. The waiter kept the water coming and checked up on us often enough that we didn't feel ignored, but not so often that it was excessive. The only reason I give it 4 stars instead of 5 is that I felt a little sick to my stomach afterward, but that could be my own fault considering I stuffed myself and I don't eat red meat that often. There could also be better spacing of the tables. I'm not a fan of close seating, and we sat in a row of 3 tables with a booth as one seat and a chair on the other side of the table, so halfway through our meal two other couples got seated on either side of us. It was a little close for private conversation, but one of the couples ended up being regulars and gave us a few ordering tips for next time. Can't wait to go back! read more

Despite a huge following, came here twice and was disappointed on both occasions... First with my cousin and later with my girlfriends. The inside is a classy dining room thats dimly lit, and the crowd is a little more "older" (but some you could tell came from $$$). The service was great and the waiters are really knowledgable about the menu and wine/cocktails. However, what was disappointing was the food. For starters, the wedge salad was just ok, nothing amazing. Then had their signature pot roast which was good, but it was a taste you felt something was "missing". Maybe it was bland? Or just an ordinary pot roast? While tasty, after the first few bites it got old. Maybe they hyped it up a bit, but I wasn't sold. I think the vibe outweighs the food for me at Jar. read more

I wanted to love this restaurant, but I don't... however, I am willing to give it another try. I have a sneaky suspicion the day was a fluke.. We went for brunch this past Sunday. I was excited to order the pot roast hash as I had read pot roast is one the restaurant specialties on the dinner menu. Although it has lots of goodies such as bell peppers, onions, mushrooms and au jus in addition to the traditional potatoes, it tasted INCREDIBLY bland. So bland that it was not worth eating the calories just because I was hungry. I grinned and bared it then stopped by In-N-Out on the way home. You're probably thinking to yourself "why didn't she send it back for something else"? Well, one of my pals at the table had to send her entree back and exchange for something else. (She originally ordered the baked eggs and they were just awful. It was like a weird tasting soupy thing. She reordered the omelet that was pretty tasty.) I just didn't want to disrupt the vibe at our table with another send-back.. so that's it. I also had a nibble of my sister's Lobster Benedict and that was pretty good. Our other friend had the Chiliquiles and she seemed pleased. -I would actually give this review two stars but we did have the most incredible butterscotch pudding with salted caramel. SO YUMMY!! My last little gripe: although our server was SUPER SWEET, she just was not attentive at all. She really should have noticed I only ate one or two bites of my meal but she never checked on us, even AFTER our friend who sent her entree back received her new omelet. We had empty coffee cups and beverage glasses and it was hard to get refills. Jar is the caliber of restaurant that I would expect excellent service. They were busy but there were still some empty tables so there is not excuse. Well, to top it all off, I was double-bummed when I realized later that night they had charged my credit card twice. Not all the seats in the house are good; some are kind of "hidden" where you're secluded in a corner but some might prefer that. Just had dinner here and was very much satisfied. Here were the cast of characters: - pork chop: delicious crust...extremely tender. and juicy (esp for a pork chop!) - 8 oz steak: DIVINE. the flavor of the peppercorns really came through...perfectly delicious - pot roast: they say they're known for their pot roast but in all honesty, I didn't think it was anything to rave about. It could be a personal thing bc i'm not keen on this type of meat so I may be biased. - butterscotch pudding: best pudding ive ever had. it's quite rich for a pudding...but I'd definitely order it again - apple bread pudding: sounded amazing....but it fell a little short. I'm not sure i'd recommend it - squash blossoms: really good; lightly fried and stuffed with crab - duck fried rice: this is a must-try. great flavors! - creamed corn: right from the cob...how can you deny corn anything? - broccolini: cooked perfectly...nice green to go with your meal - japanese purple potatoes: love purple potatoes...also yummy but it's not too far off from what you can make at home. Jar is consistently one of the best restaurants in LA- i can't believe I havent reviewed it yet. I ate dinner here last night and had one of the best meals in history: stuffed squash blossom app, wedge salad and steak, with a side of english peas. AMAAAAZING. We also had the butterscotch pudding. i can't even tell you how incredible it was. I have also been to Jar for 'special occasions'- usually when a restaurant has a Prix Fixe it is thrown together and thoughtless- subpar. I went to Jar for New Years Eve 2011 and it was so fantastic that I took my mom there for Thanksgiving this year. Amazing food, fantastic service. Dined here with 4 companions on a Saturday night. Very very noisy, very good service. We had the deviled eggs for a start and they were forgettable. I had the Coq Au Vin which was awful. Who puts smoke on Coq Au Vin. My companions has steaks and loved them and the sides were very all delicious. Dessert was all soft puddings. What happened to tarts and cakes. Food - While it bills itself as a "modern" chophouse, I did not expect much in terms of creativity from Jar. As expected, the food was well-prepared but did not wow me in terms of new flavors or flavor combinations. I started with the special mozzarella salad. The mozzarella was of good quality as were the cherry tomatoes. But there was nothing on the plate that I couldn't do myself after a trip to the farmer's market and The Cheese Store of Beverly Hills. On the other hand, the pot roast was a dish that few would have the patience to make at home. Though there was nothing particularly creative about it, the meat was slow-cooked to perfection and perfectly seasoned. The garlic fries and asparagus were also good but not great. Service - The service was friendly and helpful. In spite of being late for our reservations, we were seated promptly at a very nice corner table. The waitress was prompt and our water glasses were refilled as soon as necessary. The check also came quickly once we informed the waitress that we needed to catch a flight. Atmosphere - Elegant decor with a mix of photographs and modern art on the walls. My dining companion thought that some of the textured paintings looked like carpet. I cannot disagree. Nevertheless, judging from our fellow diners, this is a fine environment for a wide range of occasions - from a celebratory dinner to a romantic evening. Overall - In terms of the food, one could say that this restaurant is the polar opposite of Ford's Filling Station (reviewed earlier this week). It doesn't try anything too spectacular but everything on the menu is cooked well. Of course, the atmosphere is completely different, as are the prices. There are enough fine restaurants in Los Angeles that I don't feel compelled to revisit Jar but I would not refuse to return if there were no other options available. Rating: 7/10 read more

Last night I went to Jar and I felt like I had been swooped bar to old school LA with the very cool decor and ambiance. The customer service and attentive wait staff are impeccable. The wine list is extensive, but a bit pricey. We shared a bunch of things on the menu. The crab deviled eggs weren't my cup of tea, but the other diners at my table loved them. The pot roast was to die for -- seriously, yum. They don't even give the diners a steak knife because I bet my butter knife could slice through it. As for the sides, I particularly liked the cream corn. It's too bad that to food and wine was so rich, I didn't save room for dessert. Next time! read more

3.5 stars (but set as 3 stars to even out ratings for those who put 4 stars for 3.5) Loved the ambiance... and It was good food. Started off with the sourberry cocktail which I thought was good - I thought it was a nice balance of sweetness and alcohol (not too overpowered by alcohol) which I personally like. I agree with the reviews, It's a good restaurant if you want steak. I ordered the "famous" pot roast and I didn't think it was anything special....actually wished I had ordered a steak instead. Not that the pot roast was bad... but my boyfriend's steak was MUCH better (maybe I'm just partial to steak! heheh). We also started with the half dozen oysters on the half shell (good but I thought the oysters were on the smaller side). Our neighbours ordered the fish and it looked really good as well. So if you're in the mood for beef - order a steak. If you really really really love pot roast, or you're craving a home cooked meal like a pot roast, then get the pot roast. We also used the blackboard eats coupon which was nice. We also saw a few cast members from CSI Miami so that was nice cuz I'm a sucker for those kinds of things. =) read more

This is a great steakhouse that not many of my friends knew about. My ribeye was solid, juicy, and flavorful...as well as my friend's filet. This place prides itself on it's meat so unless you have that, you really don't know the place. The meatloaf is very good as well. If you get there early before your friends, have a drink at the bar and sample the potato chips you dip in whipped horseradish, who would'a thought that combo is so DAMN good! The pricing is what you'd expect from a nice steakhouse and the service is superb. Make a reservation as this place isn't ginormous and if you have a party, try to get the round private room on the side. Get their signature pot roast, obviously. It's delicious. I felt transported to another decade, everything from their furniture to lighting down to the staff's uniform was from 30 year ago, but not grungy, so it was interesting and ambient. I had been highly anticipating my visit to Jar, and I was not disappointed. Their website says that the dress is business casual but the guy at the next table was wearing a white t-shirt. The décor was nice, a bit dark, mellow, and simple. The chairs were soft, big, and really comfy. I had planned my meal long before setting foot in the restaurant. We had the appetizer special which was squash blossoms stuffed with lobster, shitake mushrooms, and herbs and lightly fried in a tempura batter with a ponzu sauce on the side. It was incredible, delicate, flavorful, and just a great melding of flavors. A little baby zucchini was attached to the bottom of the stuffed blossom, and it was cooked to just the right level of firmness. For my entrée I had the char sui pork chop. It was THE BEST pork chop I ever had in my life. The chop was thick (over an inch) but cooked perfectly- so tender and juicy. My husband had the skirt steak with a tamarind sauce which he liked (although he thought it was a bit too buttery for his taste), but he adamantly declared that they next time we go back, he'll get the pork chop. We shared a side of garlic mashed potatoes which were really flavorful and silky. We limited our food intake during the meal because we wanted to make sure we had enough room for 2 desserts. We had the banana cream pie and the butterscotch pudding with caramel on top. Jar's desserts seem to be fairly simple and straight forward, but they're excellent. The banana cream pie had an almost shortbread-like crust, with fresh bananas and a really flavorful cream. The butterscotch pudding was out of this world- tons of flavor, really smooth tasting, and the caramel was some of the best I've ever had. Oh, and the butter that came with the bread (pre-entrees) was really good. The service was great. The wait staff knew a lot about the food and gave good recommendations. I noticed that their "front of the house" people were really attentive and would walk around every so often making sure things were OK and that wine glasses were filled. I had the corn pancakes with strawberries and syrup plus two scrambled eggs. I did not think the food was that great. The decor and ambiance of the restaurant is awesome. It does take you into a different era. The other plus was the Coffee Cake. I can not recommend this place for brunch. Jar is one classy joint. Great service, wine list, and ambiance. The dishes on the menu constitute a series of sophisticated takes on traditional food - the pot roast is SERIOUS. Great for dinner with friends, family, or clients. I even took someone who was vegan there and he was pleased to find that he had a number of meal options (it helped that our server & the kitchen were very accommodating). Sommelier was extremely knowledgeable. This is in my 'hood, which makes it a good option when I want to dine close to home (read: drink lots of good wine), and generally, you don't get the runaround when it comes to reservations (unlike other places in this town, which shall here remain unnamed). A stalwart and consistently palatable upscale dining retreat. read more
