OK, you know, I'm just going to come clean right here at the beginning and say I am a fool--nay, a damned fool--for JUST NOW discovering this Northwest Austin gem of Mexican food awesomeness. I am not speaking as a recent transplant to the city, nor as a recent resident of this side of town. This place has been calmly waiting for me to enter its doors since (at least) the early part of the 2000's. And for whatever reason, no matter that I've passed it a thousand times, I absolutely refused to ever go there. You can't really fault me. Several forces of both food (and general) snobbery kept me at arm's length for most of the time; nothing could ever beat the authentic Mexican food of San Antonio, and I simply did not care to dine in the same ramshackle strip mall that boasted both Shenanigans and Bum's Billiards. In my head, the place was a shack with plastic patio chairs and a menu that rarely diverged from breakfast tacos and burritos. Seriously, I had a MAJOR block against this place. The cracks in my resolve can be attributed to Brian and John, roomies and both friends of mine who live across the street. Many a time, they have struggled to convince me Jardin Corona was not the sh*tshack I had imagined, and that it was actually very decent Mexican food. "Lies, all lies" I thought, and immediately changed the subject. The final break in the case was when the three of us were slated to head to The Erwin Center to catch a taping of "The X Factor". I met John early for pre-Going-To-See-Britney-Spears cocktails, and with Brian on the way, we needed lunch and fast. Perhaps it was the Yelp adventurer in me that finally announced: "Alright, you got me. Let's walk across the street to Jardin Corona". I knew I had made a major mistake all these years the second we walked in. There were tables! And booths! A bustling bar area, a robust lunch crowd...my insane ideas of a small, cramped shed with no modern conveniences was all a myth! I figured we had ought to order quickly, as I didn't want to fill up on all the crow I was already eating. Our waiter was welcoming and genial, and before I knew it we were served a margarita the size of my head. I wept a single tear of joy, and commenced getting buzzed at noon. I ordered a combination plate called the Jardin Supreme Platter with cheese enchiladas and beef tacos. It was hit-the-spot delicious, and un-apologetically cheesy. I'm not saying it was equivalent to my San Antonio haunts, but I have not truly been able to enjoy that unique co-mingling of margaritas and enchiladas in Austin...until Jardin Corona. Messages of support came flooding in from Facebook after my check-in ("We take the kids there all the time!"; "Hubby and I eat there once a week."; "It's big drinks and cheap, good food; what more can you ask for?"), further cementing Jardin Corona as my Official Go-To Mexican Restaurant In Austin, TX. I had found more than a new restaurant in which to meet my friends for dinner. I had found more than a combination enchilada plate. I had a unfavorable experience here one that I honestly can't recommend, thus the 1 star. I came here for dinner for a friend's birthday. The salsa was poured out of a plastic jug. FYI salsa should be fresh and plastic disposable jugs being reused containers procures bacteria. The chips were uninviting. I ordered a drink which was mixed badly. I ordered a Rio Grande, which consists of chicken enchiladas, flat tortilla con queso, a beef taco and rice and refried beans. I never made it too far into eating my entree because my stomach got upset and I got nauseous and had to try to take care of business in the bathroom. The bite I took of the enchiladas was very disappointing flavor wise, the rice and beans was "meh". The ground beef in the taco reminded me of mystery meat from my public elementary school so I steered clear of it. The bathroom wasn't the cleanest nor dirtiest. But one can always appreciate a very clean bathroom which this one wasn't. The service was non existent I was forgotten a few times trying to order my drink and my food. The waitress never introduce herself by name, I wasn't asked how was my food was,even though when I had to ask them to take it away it was pretty much a full plate, because my stomach got upset, before I could get far. It was clear something might be wrong. After everybody ate I went to look for my waitress but she had apparently left for the night. Now nobody else in my party got an upset stomach on site and their Margaritas was good according to them. I just can't recommend this place nor will I be back. However so this isn't a just me review. Please note I did see a few flies flying near my food on the table, and cleanliness wasn't up to pay. I'm considering calling the food inspectors to safe the next sap from my experience. Also FYI for some of the other reviews that calls this authentic Mexican food, that's way off. They might as well call Taco Bell authentic. Well I did have to ask for the bathroom in Spanish... This margarita made me into a believer. I knew it was going to be good as I watched the bartender start the drink with some mango puree and a shot of Gran Marnier. Only then was it time to add the prefabbed frozen stuff. This is a drink with both physical and mind-altering heft. The five pound hand blown glass goblet sends a message that stuff is about to get real, and the drink delivers. As I battled with this frozen lime behemoth, I took down a whole basket of chips with excellent salsa. Service was friendly and fast in the bar. Per the normal north Austin standard, the setting is a functional strip mall (read craptacular). I came here with a large group on a Monday night. You can easily tell from the menu and from the loudness of the restaurant that this is your classic Mexican restaurant (in a good way). I had the sangria and crispy tacos with ground beef. The tacos were simple and delicious and came with rice and beans. The beans looked exactly the same as beans at other Mexican restaurants, but for some reason these just tasted better, although I'm not sure why. The sangria was just okay; something about it made me think it was really cheap wine, but I could be wrong and I wasn't expecting much anyway. My friends all ordered margaritas and they had no complaints. Service was the bare minimum. Food and drinks came out in a reasonable amount of time, and prices were pretty low for the most part. The service was really nice and I enjoyed the sunshine but must have ordered the wrong thing. We had a michelada, a margarita and some queso (fundido, bacon, poblano). We went there for the micheladas but since it tasted like one from Chilis, we moved on to a stronger beverage. So upon a recommendation from the server, we had a margarita as our second drink. As advertised "cointreau, top shelf tequila, fresh orange juice". As drunk, mix + tequila. Not any different from any other mediocre margarita. The queso was actually good -- served with flour tortillas, it was the white stringy cheese, with bacon, poblano peppers and onions. Really greasy but the flavor was great. We immediately felt better once we got inside -- friendly service, hopping restaurant, and good looking plates of food coming out of the kitchen. I can't say enough good things about the service - very friendly and proactive -- bringing more chips and salsa before the first round was even half empty. Drinks were good. But the food was definitely MEH. I had the veggie fajitas, and what wasn't charred to blackness was undercooked. But, the tortillas and guacamole were A-OK. Took 15 minutes before we were approached for our drink order, never got some of the condiments we asked for, waited 30 minutes for a drink refill after we had to ask a different server after ours would check on every other table except ours. Service was great - very attentive. Definitely try speaking Spanish to the staff if you're bilingual - our server spoke to us in Spanish some and we understood. Margaritas were good and food was also. We got 2 large quesos as our appetizer and it was tasty. For our meals we ordered: Carne Asada Tampiqena, Quesadillas, bean & cheese nachos, and Enchiladas Rio Grande. All the food was good - quesadillas were a little bland, but still good. Would definitely order the enchiladas, nachos, and Tampiquena again - it came with a HUGE piece of steak!! Service was very good - we never lacked for refills in drinks and chips! The BEST place for both food and drinks in North Austin. Love the patio, something they've improved over the years more and more, and a great place to drink and smoke with friends. They don't shy away from making the drinks extra strong, with high points going to both the Mexican Martinis and the frozen margaritas. My husband and I were a little skeptical after reading some negative reviews this place had but decided to give it a try. We love Tex-Mex and my husband is half Mexican so we knew that if it wasn't good we wouldn't be bad. We're so glad we didn't let the one or two negative comments deter us from trying this place! The service was perfect. The waiter was attentive but didn't hover and we never had to look for him. My husband ordered one of the enchilada plates and I ordered the Carne Asada Tampiquena - something I never had before! Our meals were delicious and was made as we ordered it. I've been here twice now and both experiences were OKAY. The first time I had the milenesa. It was a very generous portion, however the breading was a little thick and since the steak was doused in sauce, soggy by the time it got to my table. The steak itself was also a bit tough. Second time I had the chimichanga. I definitely won't be ordering this again. It's just way too greasy. I think it spent a bit too long in the fryer, and on top of that the filling had WAYYYY too much cheese. A bit too rich for my tastes. Things I did like were the guacamole and the queso. The large queso is actually LARGE (unlike some places where a large queso is like the size of a small soup bowl). And the service here is very friendly and fast. I really need to go here for breakfast sometime based on the reviews I've read here...and especially since breakfast tacos are one of my favorite things. I'll continue coming back here (at least a few more times) just because the menu is very extensive and I'm sure i'll find something that I really like....eventually. read more

We usually come for shrimp cocktail which is always fresh and delicious. The servings are generous as well. Papa flauta and enchiladas were on point as well. Only been here once but will be back. Salsa - not chunky- which I prefer. Nice flavor with just enough heat. Pleasant surprise for my dinner and price for 4 adults, 3 children. One plate can easily feed two regular sized humans. Hamburger looked boring, meat, cheese, bun. Enchilada w Molé was good, not great but better than okay. The meat platter, the Parridella ( sorry if I mispelled it), was actually a pleasant surprise w assorted meats and even some tasty prawns. I had previously left a great review for this place in 2018. Can't say I feel the same about it after 2019. I'm really unsure how in the fuck they have 2 health reviews that are 94/100 score after getting three people in a single visit (that ate completely different things) disgustingly sick. One was so bad off after eating here she spent time in the hospital and nearly died from the Salmonella poisoning. These guys managed to give a vegetarian food poisoning too. What the hell changed?!?! Stopped giving a fuck? Poor management? Crappy vendors? I used to love this place. Now I wouldn't recommend anyone let a stray dog eat here.
