My wife and I went here recently for a late lunch. Not many customers so we got excellent service. My wife ordered a hot sandwich and it was so big she took half of it home. I ordered one of my favorites (Chicken Fried Steak) and if I could, I would give it 8 stars. Usually when you get CFS there is lots of gristle and little flavor. My order had no gristle and was cooked just right. The gravy over the meat was excellent. The home potatoes were good but I would recommend to the manager that they add some onions and maybe a little cheese to them. Our water glasses and coffee cups were filled promptly. Hidden gem of Menlo Park. Completely unassuming and kind of in a weird spot on El Camino (sandwiched between a Chevron and a derelict car dealership), I love this place. HUGE variety in their menu. Copious portions. I don't know if I've ever encountered a place which covers your western breakfast, chinese food, Italian pastas, Malaysian, Singaporean, Hawaiian BBQ, and sandwiches/burgers all under one roof. You would think this would be a weakness 9/10 times. Jason's is that 1/10 which nails both eastern and western cuisines with aplomb. Everything from their scrambles to their mie goreng rocks. You have to be starving in order to finish their portions, but I won't judge. Friendly service, cozy booths (it must have been an IHOP in a former life), and fair pricing. Not at all impressed. Quite disappointed actually and I feel a little sick. For the reviewers that said "better than stacks" shame on you. I'm not like a super huge stacks fan or anything but I wouldn't say this place is better. Had the classic eggs Benedict with bacon. It was lackluster at best. The hollandaise held no surprise, nor was the flavor ringing in my mouth. That left me disappointed as I love eggs Benedict. They didn't even care enough to crisp the English muffin. I've eaten at Jason's several times and it really fits the Yelp 3 star A-OK rating. Just about everything about this place is A-OK. Nothing great nothing poor just A-OK. I've had a couple of breakfasts and a couple of dinners and the food has always been good. The prices are fair and the staff is very nice. The building was a Pizza Hut once upon a time. They have done a good job making a comfortable restaurant out of it. I wouldn't travel any distance to eat here but if you are in town and just want a good meal at a fair price I give Jason's a thumbs up. read more

I liked Jason's. I came for breakfast and got a good, standard All-American breakfast. Prices were fair and portions were big. Service was a bit slow, but I'll let that slide since it is still fairly new and kinks probably will get worked out. I think it is much better than Stacks which is down the street. read more

We pass this place all the time, and finally decided to give it a try last Saturday. To be honest, I wasn't expecting much. I've had some disappointing breakfasts, so I was prepared to be underwhelmed. What a pleasant surprise! Our food was brought out quickly, and everything was cooked perfectly. My guy had a breakfast burrito.It came with an incredibly tasty guacamole mixture. I loved it so much, i would have bout a jar/bottle if they sold it. I had two poached eggs, 2 pieces of crispy bacon (as i had ordered it) and two surprisingly good pancakes. I liked that the pancakes weren't the size of my head, (so i didn't feel quite so overstuffed, and over carbed.) Prices were cheaper than the more popular places, (yes, I'm talking about you Stacks.) This restaurant is really close to our house, so I'm sure we'll return...Now we just need to decide for the area, which is better, Ann's or Jason's? read more

Dinner for breakfast or breakfast for dinner. I like this place... always attentive and they will make you what you want anytime of day. It is a great diner. Not pretentious but clean and comfortable diner. Tried the spaghetti & meatballs the other day. Wow homemade meatballs just like my mom used to make! I was impressed with that. The tomato sauce leaves a little something to desire for those who need more spice, but the meatballs make up for it. Extra star for not overcooking the pasta!!!! I am looking forward to trying the meat sauce served with the linguini. The salad choice is a little weak, but hey it is a diner and it is fresh, and kinda fun old school. The asian owners make things fun, by adding a few asian items to the menu (which are quite good, the ones I have tried, ask for no extra salt tho). Don't be fooled by the dated exterior. It's a cozy restaurant which always has a booth available. The staff are friendly and recognize regulars (me) and how they like their food prepared. The Pad Thai noodles are great, get a side order of nan bread. MMMMMMM! They'll adapt your order anyway you want it. I like the cashew chicken with red curry sauce (not on the menu but no problem). I end up taking half the meal home so it's really a deal if you're on a budget. Strangely Im finding a bunch of places I should have reviewed long ago yet Im only getting to them now. Im always for a new breakfast place and Jason't definitely fills the void. Asides from Stacks and Ann's, basic breakfast fare is hard to come by. How can you not want bacon, eggs, potatoes and toast? Wow! Was I impressed with this mild mannered simple cafe/dinner. I found it via Yelp! Excellent, professional, speedy service, stupendous portions, and really good food. My breakfast was under $7 for 3 eggs, 4 slices of bomb a$$ bacon cooked the way I like it, chunky country style potatoes, 2 slices of toast and the waiters kept my coffee replenished and the waiters didn't keep nagging me about "is everything ok". They didn't have to ask...they already knew! In addition I ordered french toast and OMG, they brought out a platter of french toast that consisted of 4 full slices of bread for a total of 8 pieces of french toast. I guess you can figure out this was way too much for me to eat and lemme tell you I can pack away some food. ...and OMG, the fresh squeezed orange juice was delicious. The atmosphere was Sunday quiet with a small town feeling. There are pictures of trains from days gone by lining a couple of walls. The interior of the restaurant is more flash back to the past but the service and food were excellent. I definitely will be going back here again. read more

Jason's is a dingy little place on the edge of downtown MP. When I got out of my car and walked toward the entrance I almost turned around because it looked like it was closed to me. The windows were cloudy and dark but I noticed a barely visible neon open sign and decided to still give the place a shot. I walked in and was greeted and seated immediately. The place is clean but dated. I ordered eggs over-easy with bacon and hash browns with coffee to drink. Let's run it down: The eggs were slightly undercooked. There was a small amount of giggly white in there but it wasn't too far off the mark. They were, however, completely devoid of any seasoning whatsoever; not acceptable. The bacon had a funny taste like it was grilled in fat that had previously cooked bell peppers; Weird. The hash browns were cooked on one side only and were not very crisp. The coffee was standard. Oddly enough, the whole grain toast was the only item where I thought: "hey, this is pretty good." Two stars on Yelp is "Meh". I'd say that this place about sums that up in a nutshell: Mediocre but inexpensive. Skip this place and go up to Ann's Coffee Shop on Santa Cruz. read more

The service is quick. There 's none of the long waits I've endured at other places. The best thing about Jason's, and the main reason I've put off writing a review, is it is never crowded. Eating at Stacks or the Creamery can be extremely unpleasant with the noise, the constant rush of customers and staff past one's table, the sense of "hurry up and leave", people are waiting. At first I thought this was just a diner serving the usual pancakes, eggs, hash browns, and sausages but then i flipped through the menu and they also had a whole array of Asian dishes and I am not talking about the white-washed version. Like some serious curries and Chinese food were in the menu. I got the chicken fried steak and seafood stir fry to see what this place is capable of. The chicken fried steak was good, but the hash browns were undercooked and not browned long enough. The seafood dish was good and something I would totally expect at any Chinese place in the area. Even more impressive, all the cooks at Jason's Cafe were Latino's and they did well preparing the ethnic Asian dishes. The 1st thing Turkish noticed was how clean everything was and that was greatly appreciated. I noticed it has had a complete makeover from the days of the burger joint that was here before. The service was seriously prompt, they were on thier game! They are going to give Stacks a great run for their money, and better decor! Jason's has an excellent breakfast menu (their own parking lot), 5 varieties of Eggs Benedict - I had the Wheat Germ Pancakes, they were huge and filled up the plate, they were very very good. My wife and I were visiting Menlo Park for a wedding and in need of lunch before the evening wedding celebration. We spotted Jason's Café close to our motel. The café does not look like much from the outside, but it was pleasant on the inside. There were about 5 other tables with customers which I thought was a good sign for a late lunch at about 2PM. The menu is extensive and breakfast is served all day. My wife ordered the BLT ($8.25) and I ordered the whiteboard special "loco moco" ($9.95). My wife said her BLT was very good but could only eat half the sandwich and I helped with the accompanying French fries. Loco moco is a Hawaiian dish made of a bed of rice topped by a hamburger patty topped by fried eggs and all covered in brown gravy. The Jason Café version separated the three main items but covered all with brown gravy. Also, their eggs and meat patty could be cooked to order. The serving size was quite large and I left most of the large scoop of rice on my plate. When we left Menlo Park on Sunday morning we drove past Jason's Café at about 9AM and the parking lot was full. Obviously Jason's Cafe is a local favorite and now added to my lit as well. read more

If you're in the mood for a big plain breakfast, then this is a good spot. The restaurant was pretty empty for a Saturday morning (which I took as a bad sign), but the service and food were fine. The portions are huge--I don't think I've ever received three sausage patties with a breakfast before. They are also pretty much the only place to get breakfast in the evening around here, so that is a big plus. Other reviewers have it right that the food isn't going to be crazy good. Location: right on El Camino and close to the intersection with Oak Grove Ave. Parking: Dedicated parking lot with a good number of parking spots for the diner's customers. Ambiance: smaller diner, a little more mom and pop which is nice. Nothing fancy. Saw a glass counter with a few empty cake stands. I presume there are pies or cakes in there at times. Wooden booths with cushioned seats and seat-backs and stand-alone tables fill the eating area with some dividers with some random "country" themed decor-- like a hen with eggs, or a pot-belly pig. Service: Nothing but praise for the service. Service is friendly, efficient, and just plain good. At no point were they slow with anything. You don't have to wait long to get your order taken, delivered, or for you to catch their attention for the bill and a to-go box. One thing that I really liked, that's simple, but often not remembered when I go to restaurants is having water with no ice. We had a couple of waiters. The first waiter brought us our waters with no ice. The other waiter, who refilled our waters knew/remembered to refill water with no ice which was nice-- shows there's good communication happening with staff. Food and pricing: Menu has a good number of items and a good selection as well. Food comes out pretty quickly. Portions are pretty decent with decent prices as well. Slightly higher pricing than my usual diner, but it is Menlo Park. A lot of dishes on the menu are between $9 and $13-- definitely reasonable. There are cheaper and more expensive dishes, some side dishes, and various beverages. I ordered the country skillet which was nice and hearty. My dish had things like potatoes, grilled onions, bell peppers, and shredded cheddar cheese topped with a well cooked chicken fried steak and finally topped with over easy eggs cooked just right. This dish came with a side of gravy and your bread option (in my case, I chose the English muffin). Also, got to love breakfast all day long. They have slightly different hours on various days. But typically they have a closed period between lunch and dinner of about 3hrs. Overall impression: Good, quick service; good food; good prices. Return factor: Yes. read more

Jasons takes you away from the high end snob types of restaurants that surround Menlo Park. They have great service, good food, and good size portioned meals. The restaurant takes you to a more Midwestern feeling vs Silicon valley. They have a large selection, almost too large. There's so many things to select it can get confusing on what you would want. My husband loves all their food and my kids can always find what they want. I only take away one star because they restaurant lacks in decor. They could just do some simple changes to help make the restaurant feel cleaner and more comfortable. Other than that I would highly recommend them. read more

Eggs were not scrambled, came as 1/4 inch thick, 12 inch diameter and completely overcooked. The giant pan shaped overcooked eggs came covering a bowl full of sad looking meat and potatoes. At the bottom of the bowl was a giant puddle of grease. Disgusting. The toast was not actually toasted - soft and almost felt microwaved. I wasn't expecting much as I know it's a no-frills style diner. What I wasn't expecting was for them to screw up every aspect of the dish. Didn't help that we were sat next to the bathroom, an obvious longtime smoker who nearly coughed up a lung, and the general dirtiness of the place. Really not a pleasant experience. Best banana pancakes I've ever come across! Everyone in our group thought the food (breakfast) was excellent and well executed, be it egg dishes, french toast, or regular and pancakes. Yes, the decor is like going into an old IHOP, but it's just fine. Been here a few times - actually ended up eating here the first day they were open. What I can say about this place, is anything you want to eat - they probably have it. If you are in one of those moods where you cant decide what kind of food you want...or if you even want breakfast, lunch, or dinner - no matter, they are probably serving it. My parent's have been coming to Jason's for years. The people that work there are so warm and kind to my parents. They treat all their customers that way. I decided to have my father's 90th birthday lunch there. There was about 12 people in our party and everyone loved their dishes....the menu is so diverse that you can choose anything from brunch items to a curry dish, to a steak and a salad. Standard American breakfast joint. Gotta say, though... this place could seriously benefit from a makeover. Sure, the Creamery and Stacks may have the same level of food, but a good paint job and some attention to the aesthetics would seriously boost business here, particularly in the Peninsula where looks go long for businesses. I'm not a big stickler for atmosphere, but I am a big supporter of successful independent businesses-- so Jason, if you're reading this, take my advice and get an interior designer! Take a few cues from the Redwood City Stacks or any of your neighboring restaurants and work a bit from the inside out. Your food will continue to speak for itself!
