My friend and I always get our moneys worth here at Jason's. Their portions are really generous and the service is mediocre. I mean, they stay busy, and the servers come around as often as they can. The toast is usually burnt on one side and there's already butter on it. They have fresh jams at the table and the OJ is fresh squeezed. Parking could be tough, but there are street parking also. Sometimes its best to get one of those spots instead. Restroom is outside of the restaurant and reminds of the restrooms that you can find at the gas station. However, they try to maintain it as much as they can, but i would personally suggest you wait until you get home to use the bathroom. read more

Not the fanciest name around, but wait until you try the food. I was looking for a place that had breakfast in the evening without having to go to the big name breakfast joints.. you know the ones I'm talking about. Jason's serves breakfast all day and at really good prices. I had two large pancakes, three eggs and two pieces of sausage for $7.50. If you're familiar with Palo Alto prices, you know that's a great deal. My wife had the chicken fettuccine With broccoli and she really enjoyed it. The broccoli was fresh and was served with a full grilled and cut up chicken breast. You didn't get just a few pieces of chicken like most places. They had everything from vegetarian meals to chicken and everything in between. Don't pass his place up. Go grab some hot cakes, trust me, they are fantastic. Four stars read more

Jason's is a tiny, odd place that looks like it used to be even tinier before a window- filled frontage was added (circa 1980 is my guess). Decor and vibe is dated with no central theme: Black and white photos of old trains line one corner. Sculptures of farm animals sit along a divider. Other walls are blank, and another side is fully mirrored to make the room look bigger. I came here with one daughter for some basic breakfast needs: -- 2 eggs, potatoes, rye toast: ($7) The eggs were cooked per my order but on the small side (I'm guessing large eggs, not extra large). The toast was good. The potatoes were boring. My coffee was mediocre and took 5 minutes to hit the table. (A mortal sin for a breakfast place; doubly so had I been in dire need). My daughter enjoyed her pancake plate, though her bacon looked oddly squared-off and artificial (?). I sampled one pancake and and it was pretty good. Service was initially slow but was speedy after that. The mediocre coffee was refilled quickly, and the waitress was friendly and patient. Jason's biggest issue, IMHO, is that the bathrooms are outdoors from the main building and not climate-controlled. That wasn't so great on a freezing winter's day, especially for my daughter. And I can imagine on a hot summer day these are no peach either. Lots of positive reviews for Jason's on Yelp, which is part of the reason we came here. I can't say I agree. I came here with my daughter after my quick errand in rainy Palo Alto. I found this Asian-owned diner as I was blasted Jason Derulo's jam on El Camino Real. And that addicting song has also gone, "In my head"! Yes, I also spend a lot of money on soundsystems in my car and downloading music. The diner is your typical diner that serve your authentic American meal. The diner goes by your schedule and serve all meals .i.e. breakfast all-day til closing. We split an order of Florida French Toast and some Chicken Strips. For $7.50, I get six half slices of thick Texas-Style cooked and battered like a pancake with fresh slice Strawberries, Kiwi and Banana as the colorful garnish topping. According to my daughter, the French Toast dish was too pretty eat. But we end up finishing it. Came here with a group on a Sun. morning. Our first choice was Stacks but the wait was too long and we were starving. We walked down the street to Jason's and were seated right away. This is your standard friendly family diner. Service was um.....interesting. About 2 minutes after we sat down the waiter asked if we were ready to order (?). We were like "uhhhh, no." HA! Then when they brought the coffee they gave it to the wrong people at the table. When I pointed to the person the coffee went to the waiter just laughed. It was kind of odd and funny. I had the Fruit Crepes with strawberries, blueberries and banana with a side of potatoes and strawberry yogurt. Even though the crepe batter was cold I didn't seem to mind since all the fruit was fresh and yummy. I tried a bite of the French Toast and they were really really good. They also have all the usual American brunch stuff like waffle, pancake, egg benedict, etc. The corn beef / hash-brown combo is also pretty good. Personally, I would prefer the hash-brown to be more "brown"... but I am sure that if you ask for it they will do it just the way you want it. They also have a full menu of Asian food. For the most part, it looks like a menu from a Thai or Indonesian restaurant with dishes like Pineapple Fried Rice, Basil Fried Rice, Pad Thai, etc. The owner is Vietnamese Chinese and he prepares the Asian dishes himself. I used to be a regular at Jason's when I lived in Redwood City. I was recently reminded by a friend of a time we all went to brunch here and I ordered the Harbor Crepe special. My friend Jon was never a big seafood fan, especially whatever is dragged up by the dock trawler. However, the beauty of the Harbor Crepe at Jason's is that everyone else at the table has no choice but to enjoy the unique flavors that permeate the entire establishment. I ordered the California Benedict (think Eggs Bene with Avocado & Turkey), and they did me a solid. Service was pretty good...our experience doesn't appear to be as good as others. We asked for pancakes without butter, and the big heaping mound of butter in the middle of our pancakes mocked us, when they passed out the food. The menu is huge. We're talking Cheesecake factory large. No idea if the lunch items are good, since we were there for breakfast, but you'll definitely have selection. Parking seemed to be the largest worry for me. A small lot, with less spaces than tables. You can do the math on that. I would say it's a great breakfast alternative to Stacks', and I'm sure we'll give it another go. This is the 1st time I try Jason's Cafe, but does not really capture heart to visit again. I will definitely visit again if there is no other choice in the area for breakfast or lunch. Pork chop is over grill, and the top look fine, until I turn around the bottom side it's OVER BURN with dark color. The price is more expensive if I compare the size of the pork chop, and quality. I expect a small independent cafe should do much better then Stack or IHop or Creamer...etc. They do ask me how is the food after we finish, of course I gave my feedback about over burn on the pork chop. The guy explanation is ... today we short of staff, and one of the cook not working. Conclusion is short of staff and cause the quality of the food to be worst. I feel like if you serving the food to customer, no matter what condition the food have to serve perfect + Excellent! You can not give me excuse of employee not working, and not enough cook. Then this is the management responsibility, and why customer have to pay the price for their problem. The Swedish pancake is Ok, but not resonable price if I compare to other restaurant. Overall service is great. If you getting a small bite for lunch or breakfast, I do recommend. The price of the food in menu need to be more resonable, unless the interior look much nicer or faster service. Overall the menu price is either same or more expensive compare to STACK. ** If the onwer of Jason's Cafe reading this, I really hope you have improve on the quality of the food and service time. I was in need of breakfast this morning and used yelp to find Jason's cafe. I was seated quickly, served good coffee and I ordered the garden omelet with potatoes. No gluten free option for bread so I skipped it. I asked for salsa and they brought out something that obviously came from a jar. The taste of it reminded me of Pace Picante. When I searched Yelp for a place for breakfast, this is the place I found. When I asked friends for a place for breakfast, this is the place they recommended. When I asked at the hotel for a place for breakfast, this is the place they recommended. High praise, huh? No, this is just that place where, when you wake up feeling famished but don't want your taste buds - or other senses - challenged, when you need some just plain old coffee before you even think about anything involved with acai or food with the word "chai" in it, when you want to go to the place where everybody knows your name, you go here. Menlo Park is in the heart of Silicon Valley. There are a boatload of rich people here. So it was funny that there were Maseratis and Bentleys (that's an "s" at the end of "Bentley", all y'all) and Mercedes that start with 6 in the parking lot, but I went inside and it looks like that diner down the street from me that's a converted Pizza Hut, with '80s-style chairs and overstuffed vinyl (well, might have been leather, but I wasn't awake enough to see) booth bench padding that ran halfway up the wall. It was a little dark (whew - wait'll I open my eyes a bit before you turn on the lights), but I didn't need them to find my way around because it was just a plain ol' diner, one my dad would have been comfortable in. And the food was comfortable, too. No challenges, just pancakes and waffles. Yeah, the toppings were a little fancier, and there were a couple of additional choices of things you could stick inside your omelet, but you can order without opening the menu even if you've never been there before. The orange juice was fresh and good, but not spectacular. The chorizo scramble was comforting and familiar and there was a lot of it, but the chorizo itself was a little less than mediocre (dude - there's a really vibrant Hispanic area a few blocks away - consider a partnership with one of the butchers there). A waffle was a waffle; the fruit on top was good and rich-California big, but not great, and you can get great in restaurants close by - just not at breakfast. It wasn't a great value. Not terrible, but not cheap. Thinking the real estate taxes are more than most restaurants in Alabama pay for rent, so the money's gotta come from somewhere. And it really does seem to be the only place around, unless you want a McBurrito. I'm pretty much a morning person. I wake up and like breakfast. OK, I usually have cereal, but I really like cereal, and there are more than a half-dozen different varieties, including steel-cut oats and a couple of different granolas, in my pantry to choose from, not just corn flakes. When I travel, I know I can't get Cocoa Puffs (unless I stay at a Comfort Inn), but I look for places with locally-made granola, interesting and excellent coffee (yum!), and omelets made with really good chorizo or super-fresh and crunchy local mushrooms and green peppers. I couldn't find that place in the area. Great lunches, fantastic dinners, lots of choices there. Breakfast? Bupkes. (DID find great coffee not too far away, but that's all they've got.) People in the area just don't do breakfast, apparently. So I guess you gotta go there. Whatever. read more

It's classic breakfast the way you imagined it at a decent price! Got myself the country skillet. Bed of potatoes, onions, tomatoes, and peppers tossed with some cheese, then a giant steak on top with my eggs over easy, sourdough toast on the side, and a little cup for gravy. Damn good food with fast service. A lot of the guys who served was Viet, so I'm still wondering which one is Jason lol. Nevertheless, I love this place for a decent bite to eat. It's a cute little diner. I would take it over Denny's any day. My fiancé got the Benedict and it was very flavorful. I got the Cobb salad and it was great. They had fresh veggies and I put the dressing on the side so I just drizzled just enough. The garlic bread was toasted well and it smelled so good. The portions are huge and well worth the price. The place is old could definitely use some remodeling. I would avoid the bathroom if you're able too. It is gross. read more

We have been coming here frequently for over two years. It's definitely the Best Breakfast in Menlo. Damn good lunch, and pretty good dinner too. Pass the line at Stack;s and come here for breakfast. Burgers? On the ambitious menu they may be hard to find but they are great. Better, Yes, than the Oasis or Goose. Another Yelp complains about the crab cake sandwich. Mine was great, but another day I sent back a fish sandwich for a burger. No problema! The service is always top notch. My latest menu find (in the veggie section): Eggplant on rice. Loved it. For awhile we lived nearby and we frequented this delicious best for breakfast spot regularly. I have been here many times and brought loads of friends who all stick to the breakfast items. The plain waffle is my favorite, it is the thin kind so it really soaks in the syrup. They make a mocha smoothie that's extremely tasty and totally energizing it actually tastes every bit like a milkshake. The environmental is that of an old school diner with no frills, but it is clean and the few servers they have are fairly efficient. I took off a star because this latest visit was hampered by a less impressive experience. The server had difficulty getting our order right and our portions seemed a little skimpier than usual. The taste was still on par and I would definitely recommend and return. Side Note: I usually don't critique patrons, but also during my last visit there were a couple of normal looking fellows who made a few suspicious gestures that made me feel uncomfortable. I recommend simply paying attention here just in case folks are trying to take the laid back atmosphere for granted in hopes of outwitting unsuspecting patrons. There are a few things I notice that this place needs to improve on (I think): Appearance: 1. Booths are ripped (at least the 2nd one against the mirror, from the right) 2. Carpet is dirty 3. Interior overall doesn't look clean 4. My cup, during both visits, were dirty (lipstick) Food: 1. Fresh produce (I got dark brow aguacate that didn't taste pleasant) 2. For the prices and the portions and the diversity on the menu it's hard to beat this place. It may not be a chic environment, the food quality may not be 5 star, but when you calculate in the wonderful service, its one of my local go to places. All the staff there seem to be happy which is so rare. The chef even sings quite loudly sometimes which I love. Others may not like that but its nice to know my food is being prepared by a happy man. Jason's Cafe is a typical American brunch spot located near Gombei Restaurant in Menlo Park. They serve breakfast throughout the day, but have a diverse menu that includes soups, salads, sandwiches, pasta, and dinner entrees. In the mood for breakfast food at 2 pm (sue me, I woke up late :), we decided to give Jason's Cafe a try. While the breakfast items included skillets, pancakes, waffles, omelets, and fresh toast, my eye was drawn to the advertisement for the "World's Best Eggs Benedict." Those are pretty strong words! Four types were available; one with lean ham; a traditional with Canadian bacon, tomato, and mushrooms; one with crab; and finally one with salmon. Our order was as follows: Bowl of Soup - Mexican Tortilla soup with chicken and vegetables was a bit bland and surprisingly sparse of both tortilla and chicken. I also thought the soup was only warm, rather than piping hot. Eggs Benedict - the eggs were done quite well and the Hollandaise sauce wasn't overly powerful. I enjoyed having mushrooms and tomatoes too. The highlight of the meal. Florida French toast - consisting of french toast with kiwi, strawberries and bananas, the fruit were fresh and the french toast was ok. Overall, Jason's Cafe was a decent dining experience. The menu is extensive enough that it'll be worth a try to taste their other selections. The Eggs Benedict was very solid, though "World's Best" might be a bit of a stretch.
