We have been going to this place for years, and the past five years it's been slowly going downhill. I was hoping during covid slow time, the restaurant would get a makeover or at the very least get a really good cleaning! Lots of flies with their front door always open doesn't help. The breakfast items we've had, we can taste the oil used. Big jump on their lunch and dinner items. Our highlight stopping here has always been visiting with Nadar, a wonderful server and part-owner, but we haven't seen him for a few months. Nadar's homemade soups are still my favorite, and his dessert is delicious. We prefer Castaway now, and Dollies for HH cheap eats. read more

Let me preface my review with this - I love good food but I'm not a food snob. I appreciate attentive and fast service but am unbothered when it isn't if the staff is kind, fun and you can tell there might be only one server for the whole restaurant. Lastly when I visit the islands, I know not to expect things to be the same as where I'm from and I respect the local culture and community. This place is a whole vibe. It's funky, artsy and eclectic and it has a dive bar feel. I am giving it 5 stars based on its category of establishment and my experience. My husband and I came here for breakfast and then again with my parents for dinner. I had the eggs Benedict and hubby had the eggs with Portuguese sausage, both were good. For dinner my dad and I had the blackened fish sandwich, mom had the lemon pesto spaghetti with shrimp and hubby had the fish and chips. I loved the fish sandwich, as did my dad, fish and chips and the pesto pasta were decent. In the evenings they have live music starting at 7pm which was enjoyable and this place stays open until 10pm! The whole place is covered in patron signatures and tags - walls, furniture, curtains, even the air conditioner!! We got a kick out of that and even added to the collection. I love this place! My partner and I were staying in a hotel across the street during the Covid hysteria last year, and went maskless into Java Jazz (we DO have functioning immune systems, after all!) to start our day with a breakfast of locomoco... or something else. Of course, we often had lunch here. Dinner, too. We ended the evening by going there to listen to music and imbibe in a few cocktails. "Few" is a relative term when vacationing in Maui. The food is excellent. Service was a bit slow, but certainly within reason considering the amount of traffic coming into the restaurant: we really didn't care -- because we didn't have to, and we were having fun. The busy owner came over and chatted with us whenever we came into Java Jazz,. The food is excellent. The drinks are excellent. Best bartenders ever! Any place that has a fund for vacationing veterans is okay in my book. We stuffed some money into the box whenever we came to Maui, including this trip... sometimes just a few dollars; often, a lot more. I "accidentally" marked a bit of currency and each time we've been here, the distinctively-marked $50 bill is still there... so for those of you who insist the owner is using this as his personal vacation fund, I'm here to tell you that you're very wrong. this morning was the rudest barista I have ever had. we went there for latte four times and a nice older man made our drinks. today a younger dark haired guy was extremely rude. I ordered a large, and we paid for a large. he made a medium. I said I ordered a large and he said "no you didn't". then he dumped it into a large cup. I said, the large has three shots and he said "no it doesn't". I told him the menu says that. then he told me I had to pay for another shot and then I had to get my receipt out to show him I paid for large. he slammed things around and was rude as can be. no one needs that at 6:30 am. We went to get a coffee this morning and the mustachioed guy behind the counter was berating a younger staffer about how it didn't matter what the kid believed because at Java Jazz, the rule of the land was Trump. The younger staffer was very polite but clearly had no interest in talking politics at work. I told the mustachioed man that we were on opposite sides of this politically and didn't want a dose of politics with our morning coffee. He shouted angrily back that we should go enjoy Biden's America. He then followed us TO OUR CAR with his video camera - I guess so that he could become a Truth Social mega star. This is the most unprofessional establishment I have ever visited. So yeah, if thinking about Trump on your vacation is your thing, this is a great place to spend your money. read more

A funky little spot that had potential for fun...until we got our food. Stopped in for breakfast, my wife and I both ordered eggs Benedict. Both came out with hard boiled eggs, curdled hollandaise and cold potatoes. We also ordered a pancake with apples and cinnamon (a $4 upcharge for the apples) to split between us. The pancake was not warm enough to melt butter and it had maybe a tablespoon of finely chopped apples. Basically, the only thing we ate was the pancake. They refused to compensate us for the inedible food. So we basically paid $64 for a pancake and a couple cups of mediocre coffee. They know you are tourists and don't care if you come back, there are many more suckers out there! I've driven by this spot many times and today we decided to stop in for breakfast. We walked through the door and you walk into what immediately looks like a flea market, which generally, I don't mind. It's just a little overwhelming. There's no clear direction on where to order, is there a server, do you order at the coffee bar and have a seat? It's so dark inside , depressing even, and makes you wonder what they're hiding? After standing there for just a few minutes without being greeted by anyone, I look over and see a "Let's Go Brandon" hat proudly displayed on the cash register at the coffee bar. We went to Java Jazz on the recommendation of someone that we know. The place has lots of atmosphere. They also have lots of choices for eating and drinking. They have a full coffee and tea bar, a full bar for alcohol and then there is the food menu. We decided to try it for lunch. We both opted to have a salad. My husband had the shrimp salad. He liked it although is was very unusual. They serve a place full of salad greens (the menu said romaine, but the lettuce was not romaine at all and the shrimp are served hot in a bowl with the dressing. Even though it was different, he did like it. I ordered the Chinese Chicken Salad. The menu said that the peanut salad dressing was spicy, so I had them put it on the side. It was good, but I limited the amount that I used because of the spice. The one thing that was not good at all was the chicken. It was all white meat chicken and it was very dry. It was overcooked and barely edible. The people at the restaurant are very nice and the waiter apologized that he was the only staff member serving. Since we weren't in a rush, it wasn't a problem and he did bring the drinks out right away. But the meal was very average. read more

Just returned from our dinner at java jazz. When I received my order of shrimp quesadillas I was surprised to find onions inside the cheese quesadilla with shrimp. I promptly told our waiter that I couldn't eat them due to the onions (allergies). I was surprised they had onions since the menu said picco de gallo was on the side. I have never seen onions on a cheese quesadilla and it wasnt listed on their menu. After telling the waiter politely to take them back to remake them, the waiter went to the kitchen and came back with the same quesadillas and told me the kitchen wouldn't take them back and I had to eat them just the way they were served. I told him to take them back and he informed my husband and myself that they would be on our bill anyway. To make a long story short, we were charged the full price of $21.00 plus $4.00 for my diet coke. No sorry, no accountability, no more going back there. The waiter said he would have to pay for them out of his own pocket and that he couldn't force the cook to remake them. My husband had the shrimp pomodoro which he enjoyed. I on the other hand only enjoyed my husband's company. Another thing the waiter mentioned is that we should come back when the owner was in. My husband and I will NOT return and they should be ashamed of the way they treat customers. We are more than willing to go to the many locally owned restaurants in this area. I have been visiting the Islands for years and have somehow never been in Java Jazz. (crazy, I know) It is a cute little eclectic restaurant with tons of character. They have live music during the week that we will definitely look forward to on our next trip. I enjoyed my lunch while sitting at the bar and speaking to the staff. I have to say the burger the bartender recommended did NOT disappoint. The drinks were well made which is always appreciated. The bartender was pulling double duty, waiting tables, and bartending. He was great! The staff was very friendly and welcoming. It was surprising to see the restaurant quite empty. Hopefully, the owner will tap into the crowds that come to the food truck court across the street. We wanted to come back and try the breakfast menu but just didn't have time during this trip. Next time... The other recommendation would be to make your own ranch. For those of us who love ranch with your wonderful fries, we appreciate good ranch:) read more

Food was nothing special. We ordered spaghetti and meatballs, garlic bread, coconut shrimp, and loco moco. The loco moco was pretty good but everything else tasted like it had come from a box. However, I really did not appreciate the decor that was alt-right. I think there's a line between libertarian and alt-right and this place crossed it when they put a "let's go Brandon" hat on the counter. There's plenty of other stuff on the walls but that one was really in your face. I don't like it when people put trump flags and crap on their front lawns but I have to be okay with that because it's their right. I don't like walking into a restaurant and feeling like I'm any more "other" than I already am. There are very few places around the Westin resorts with good coffee, this is by far the best we've found and we've tried them all. They open 6am and were open on Thanksgiving:). Art is very bizarre, my niece was afraid to go inside. I always got my coffee to go (would probably have ordered food and sat inside if it wasn't so dark and creepy). I believe they would get a lot more customers if they got rid of all the eclectic art and creepy dolls; the place would look a lot cleaner and less cluttered. 5 stars for my delicious daily latte :) read more

This is not a good place for Democrats or animal lovers. I'm a Democrat and could've done without the political decor and animal skin. That said, the food was good. Our waiter was very nice but overworked. Everywhere is understaffed right now so we all need to be more patient. The angrier you get the more people quit. This is a true hidden gem! Who knew that good music and great Italian food can be found in an ordinary strip mall in Maui, but it's real! Java Jazz has the nicest staff, who really go above and beyond to make their customers feel welcome, even though there were only 2 waiters working the floor on a busy weekend night. The pasta dishes are terrific - we were so hungry we forgot to take pictures! The spaghetti and meatballs and the pesto lemon linguine were standouts. The salads are piled high with fresh ingredients, so they're great for sharing. The music is very good too: we came on both Saturday and Sunday nights and the performers were quite talented. Sadly, we found Java Jazz on our second to last day on Maui. Recommended by a fellow Maui tourist, "The best food and a cool ambiance...kind of a dive but totally unique." My husband ordered shrimp fettuccine Alfredo for dinner while I ordered the fajita/burrito, both were AMAZING! And for breakfast, he got the eggs Benedict and I got the French toast.
