We were on our fourth night in Maui, each day eating at different restaurants along beach near whalers village. Not banging on the food or drink, but it was all the same stuff, cooked the same way. We were on a walk and saw this place and figured we'd cancel our reservations at one of the big places and check it out. Cool vibe, different art and pictures all over the place; don't let it scare you as the grub was absolutely on point and my steak was cooked to perfection. The server was very cool and attentive and the drinks were good as well. To top it off, the guitar player touched on a good variety of music and was very talented. Java Jazz was walking distance from the condo I recently stayed at so one morning I walked there in hopes to get some good breakfast. My java jazz experience was the most unpleasant of my whole vacation on the island. I would not recommend this establishment and here's why: [Ordering Experience] I ordered a coffee and placed an order for take out for myself and my family. The restaurant was not crowded, I was told to wait outside and the food would be brought to me. After 40 minutes I went in to check on the status, I was handed 1 bag with two containers (I ordered food for 4 people). I informed the host/barista and she went back and forth to the kitchen trying to find out what happened with the order - she was very nice and apologized profusely but we never received an explanation as to why we had to wait so long and why the order was given incomplete. After waiting over an hour I finally received my complete order [Food Experience] Eventually, I was told that my order was mistakenly given to someone else who had the exact same order (this person ordered after I did). Everyone makes mistakes though right? Well, my order was vegetarian - an omelet without meat - when I got to the condo I discovered that inside of my omelet it was filled with ham. I asked for sourdough bread and was given white, I ordered a fresh fruit cup and the fruit looked nothing close to fresh and the pineapples were from the can. We were all unsatisfied. A local recommendation right across the street from where we were staying. We went for dinner, the first and only location to ask for our vaccination cards so that was kinda refreshing to see they follow the rules. They were short staffed so we were warned before we ordered that food may take a while. We ordered appetizers; onion rings and the blackened ahi tuna. No pictures because we just dove in. They were good, nothing more to mention about them. I would recommend going for breakfast as that seemed to be the more popular opinion. The live singer was poor but that's not the restaurant's fault. I would go back for just drinks not food but that's just me. read more

This used to be one of my favorite places to come to in Maui but I had a bad experience tonight. We went in for dinner last night and 2 charged appeared on my credit card statement so I called today but was told that the person that could help me was not in and to call back again in 20 min. I called back about an hour or two later and she said he was still not in and that I could leave my number and he would call me today. I never received a call so I sent a message on Facebook in hopes that management or the owner would respond but still nothing. It's our last night in Maui so I walked over to the restaurant and spoke with the owner, who happened to be a very nice man. He said it would be a moment for him to look into it and he asked if I wanted to sit and have a drink to which I asked it the kitchen was still open? He said absolutely and to sit anywhere I wanted. The bar was pretty full so I picked a seat next to the bar at one of the open tables. There were 2 other tables that were full and they were all eating. I sat for about 10 min and nobody came to give me a menu so I approached the bartender and let him know that I had been sitting for a while and asked for a menu. He replied very condescendingly "we don't even have any staff, the kitchen is closed." I told him that I was told the kitchen was open and was told to pick a seat. He said he would ask and walked away. At that point I walked to the front and another guy was there and he asked if I wanted to order something. At that point I was already irritated by the way the bartender spoke to me and having been ignored by him and other staff. They definitely saw me sitting there yet nobody acknowledged me. The owner walked back in at that time and he said he the kitchen was still open and he offered me a drink on the house while I waited which I declined since I was not drinking tonight. He was very nice and tried his best to help but his staff is terrible. I finally got my wings to go and noticed that they were plain but at least they put the Buffalo sauce on the side. Definitely not worth $20 for my to go soda, flavorless wings and being treated bad by the staff. It would have been better to maybe compensate part of my to go meal but anyways...sucks that the place we always go to when we're here and we always recommend to others has now been ruined. The restaurant is very eclectic and interesting. The food is subpar nothing special. They could use a air conditioner. With the right chief and menu this place could be amazing. We had the pasta with meatballs and bread pudding. The meatballs were not fresh they were prepackaged and the bread pudding had Hershey's chocolate syrup from a bottle. Shame on you! Had dinner on July 31at. Discovered the next morning that my charge card was charged twice for my dinner. Server was Claudia. Called the restaurant and Jeff assured me that he would take care of it and call me back before 10:00 pm that day. I have not heard back. Checked my statement again today and of course the two charges have been posted. Now I get to hassle the credit card company to get the funds reversed. Awful baby back ribs Dry and under seasoned. Gluten free Penne pasta was enjoyed by my wife. Asked for side of broiled scallops and shrimp in butter only and lemon wedges. They weren't broiled but didn't want to make a fuss again after the ribs debacle. They were nice size bay scallops and shrimps I just would have like some char on them and a little salt and pepper would not of hurt. Love the feel of the place, like a neighborhood joint. I really wanted to like this place, but the experience was a mess from start to finish. I ordered a loco moco and was served a patty that was literally raw in the middle. Sent it back, and they returned it so overcooked it was like biting into a hockey puck. As if that wasn't enough, we were given the wrong receipt and ended up being charged more than our actual bill. Well this a two in one review because we stopped by twice, once for breakfast and dinner. Breakfast was fast, fresh and delish. We ordered huervous rancheros with egg whites and moco loco. It was more than enough to full our bellies for zip lining. The patty for the moco loco was cooked perfect and egg was on point. The second visit was not as great. We ordered a veggie wrap to go and waited outside for the order. It took 45 minutes for a wrap and side of pasta to go. The wrap was nice and big however waiting for 45 minutes for ingredients that did not need to be cook was disappointing. We are up in the air about stopping here again while on vacay. read more

Awesome local spot in Kaanapali for affordable food and drinks. While we only got a couple cheap beers on draft, we stayed for the experience. The vibe inside was divey and comfortable, with walls filled with all sorts of random things to ogle at, like a museum of memories. Everything from Polaroids taken by visitors, a variety of lanterns and mobiles hanging from the ceiling and random instruments, posters, and chotchkis lined throughout the walls. Lastly, the live music was great (nightly from 7-10p), playing a variety of classic rock songs on his electric acoustic guitar and even taking requests. An amazing little hole in the wall! This place was right across the street from our hotel, walking distance. The interior is really fun, artsy, and eccentric! We spent most of our time looking around and pointing at the cool stuff on the walls. We stopped by for brunch, my husband had the loco moco and I had the blackened fish sandwich. Both were delicious! I loved the fish, it was so tasty and fresh. Service was quick, I think it was the bartender that was serving us and he was so nice. We ordered fish sandwich and Fantapano, and they are both below average, sandwich bread was cold and dry, and the fantapano rice was kinda disgusting, plus the Fantapano was floavoless. They are apparently understaff, there was nobody seated us, and it took about forty minutes after place the order to get our foods served. Terrible. We walked into the door and stood there behind a few other people. After far too long, we realized that you are supposed to seat yourself. So awkward. The people in front of us only had 3 and we had 6. Who gets the next table? Do they just take up a 6person table? Should I suggest that they allow us to cut ahead of them? What if another group comes in behind me? I wonder if there are more tables around the wall that I don't see? How many tables are there? Is the table going to be cleared off? These are all logistical questions that I don't want to be burdened with just to have dinner. After numberous employees walked by an seemed to purposefully avoid any eye contact with us and even turned away after we tried to flag their attention, we left. Awesome little breakfast spot off the main path in Maui. We went here for an early breakfast before we went out for the day. We had pancakes, eggs, and the bagel breakfast sandwich. All were very good. The service was good, though we had to ask a few times to get a water for our son, so definitely some room for improvement there. One part that threw me for a loop was the pricing. At first it seemed like good value, but there is an up charge for just about everything. When the food arrived it didn't seem like the portions matched the pricing. However, when all was said and done, we were all full and the bill was very reasonable. This a is a very unique place for eating and drinking coffe and or alcolhol--it is definitely a one of a kind experience! This a local hang-out and a fortunate find for dry tourists. It is a museum that has accumulated over 28 years by the owner Farzad. All of the walls are covered with his art, poloroid photos of his friends and patrons, and eclectic sculpture. We first went there last night after a romantic evening/night on the beach watching the waves, stars, and clouds. Then we decided to branch out and go for a walk. We headed away from the beach and started walking inland. We crossed the main street towards the local strip mall. It was almost 10 pm, and there only seemed to be one place that was still open--Java Jazz. When walked in to the place there was so much to see, I wasn't sure where to start. It was almost overwhelming...but I got over it. They were already shutting down but I was able to order a chocolate milkshake (that wasn't on the menu). So, there I was slurping on a delicious milkshake and checking out 20+ years of accumulated art. I wished that I had my phone to take some pics. My partner sat at the bar sipping his beer. We slept in the next morning in our time share, and instead of making our own breakfast like usual, we decided to walk over to Java Jazz, and get a bite. I started with a delicious hazelnut mocha--thst was very tasty. I ordered Eggs Benedict with fresh Salmon. I suggested to my partner that we split it, but he wanted the Egg Special with 2 poached eggs with toast and hash towns. We should have just bought one instead of 2 orders because we couldn't eat it all (warning). They were delicious, but we should have shared. BTW, the Hollandaise sauce was made there instead a ready made product like some chain restaurants use. It was delicious!!! I remembered my phone and walked around to get some shots from the "museum". It was soooo much fun to be there. I love the owner's quirky sense of humor. This is a unique place to come to eat and/or drink and experience years of accumulated art and memories. Why not experience something really different. Instead of the same old tourist scene? Needed an afternoon pick me up so wanted to check out this local shop. Since it was mid-day, the place was a bit empty. (Walking by last night, I could see quite a few patrons.) I ordered a white mocha with almond milk. My drink was okay but I do prefer my drinks a little sweeter. While the friendly barista was making my drink, I soaked in the eclectic decor. Tons of polaroid type pix and stickers on the wall with random hanging decorations. Wish I took a photo. I'd like to go back in the evening to have an adult beverage (they had a bar on the other side of the shop) and enjoy the nightly live music! read more
