We walked here for breakfast with a group of 10 and were able to get a table outside together. The setting outside is nice and you can see the beach/ocean. You can not make reservations so we went closer to when they opened. This is a casual restaurant which is the vibe we were looking for to start the morning. Our waiter was newer and wasn't able to answer a lot of our questions. He was friendly and attentive. One person in our group has celiac's and he said there was no gluten in the dish she ordered and then brought her a dish with gluten. I wish they had a gluten free menu or a menu that labeled which dishes are or could be gluten free. Besides that hiccup we all enjoyed our meals. They have a keiki menu for the kids. Went to Castaway Cafe right when it opened at 8am. The parking situation is pretty confusing as most of the parking belongs to the nearby hotel (tow away zone) and there isn't any clear signage for restaurant parking. After some back and forth with the restaurant staff we learned that the lot closest to the restaurant is okay to park. As As we got in early we managed to snag a table overlooking the beach which was gorgeous. We got the Castaway Eggs Benedict and Kalua Pork Huevos Rancheros. The eggs Benedict was disappointing - the hollandaise sauce lacked flavor and the side of potato wedges that came with it were clearly a day old and inedible. The Huevos Rancheros had more flavor and was better than the Benedict. While the service was quick and the serving staff were friendly, I have to give it a 3 stars because of the disappointing quality of the food and the confusing situation with the parking. read more

This was our first stop after checking into the hotel. Views of the ocean are great. They seat those tables first. We ate here twice - both as lunch. We ordered the Ahi Poke and chips which comes with Avocado. Decent size. A good appetizer. I also had the castaway fish sandwich. It's cajun grilled mahi mahi. Good size. Tasted great. The cajun was more of a hint and didn't dominate the flavor. We had some drinks as we sat at the pool. A bit slow on that end. Paniolo Breakfast 2 eggs any style; choice of bacon, link sausage, spam or portuguese sausage; choice of roasted potatoes or white rice; choice of toast . Spam was delicious. It was sliced then and heated to perfection. Macadamia nut pancakes were delicious. Pancakes were served in a generous portion almost could not finish. Crabcakes egg Benedict were super rich and filling. Love the potatoes served with breakfast. Plenty of potatoes came with your breakfast. They were small potatoes cut in half. To eat them you had to cut them in half again they were great. The views of the other islands and the ocean was amazing. read more

The line here was hella long and out the door. I know many love this place but I thought it was just OK. I'll say though the hostess was very friendly and welcoming, like she loves her job. I got the short rib loco moco. Presentation wasn't the best, it looked dumped on the plate, but everything was pretty good flavor wise except the rice, it was hard as a rock and hubby agreed. I let the server know and she took my plate away. I wish she would've left it and just brought me a side of new rice. It took a while though for me to get my new plate so I sat there w/o food for a while. By the time I got my food, hubby was done w/his. Also our server hardly checked on us and I had to ask other servers if they could go get our server. water refills were scarce, hard to come by, again, the server. I think also b/c where were sat, it wasn't in a good spot. Don't see myself coming back here though as there's plenty other breakfast places in Maui. read more

Castaway Cafe in Lahaina was such a beautiful dining experience and definitely one of the highlights of our trip. First off, the setting is absolutely breathtaking. Being able to sit right by the water and watch whales from our table was unreal -- one of those moments you just can't plan, and it made the whole experience feel extra special. The service was top notch from start to finish. Everyone was warm, attentive, and really made us feel taken care of without being overbearing. For food, I had the short rib loco moco, which was rich, flavorful, and super satisfying. My husband went with the traditional loco moco, and my son had the short rib benedict -- both were really good and full of flavor. The kids had the pancakes and had zero complaints (which is always a win) That said, I would absolutely come back. This review is long overdue! In our recent travels to Mauí, we found some pretty amazing brunch spots. Castaway Cafe is a hidden gem located in the Mauí Kaanapali Villas. It is a casual, beachfront restaurant that serves some of the best brunch food and cocktails on the island. Like most brunch spots in Hawaii, they're known for their classic Hawaiian dishes, like loco moco, fish tacos and fresh seafood. I am more of a hearty breakfast eater, so I settled for their portuguese sausage, eggs, potatoes and toast. My family enjoyed the banana pineapple pancakes and fresh fruit. But the real highlight of our dining experience was the banana bread! That is an absolute must! Overall, service was great, and the prices were reasonable! If you are lucky enough to sit on the ocean facing patio, you'll enjoy stunning views with amazing food and friendly service to match. Came for breakfast and hung out at the bar for a few hours. Rikki tending the bar was so friendly and fun to talk to. Absolutely loved hanging out with her and the others surrounding the bar. Great little hidden gem. Ocean front eatery that's actually the poolside restaurant at the Ka'anapali Beach Villas by Aston. Big grassy area to run around that butts up against a narrow beach. Fantastic views! If you are staying at the Sheraton and other resorts off the parkway, this very close and an easy to get to. You park in the main lot then walk about 40 yards to the restaurant. We had the coconut shrimp (which is dairy free) the castaway burger and some spring rolls. Fun experience if you are ready to take a break from the high resort prices. read more

This is a surprise little restaurant right on the water. Looks like it's been there for awhile, so it gave us a bit of an old school look. Definitely not flashy or loud. Just a great place to have lunch or dinner in a calm environment. We sat out doors and watched the sunset. Beautiful place to be! It wasn't very busy, so our waitress was very attentive to our needs (not that we are generally needy). Our party of four had two fish & chips and the other two, the fish of the day, a lovely Butterfish. I've never had it or even heard of it, but it was the BEST! The sauce over the fish just enhanced the flavors. Overall highly recommended for a nice dinner in a quiet space. read more

Very disappointed! Castaway had been our favorite. This time, the food and drinks were not nearly as good. I started with a bloody mary. It tasted watered down. Very little vodka or seasonings. I had to add tabasco and pepper at our table. My wife had the huevos rancheros and said that the dish lacked flavor in comparison to the last time we visited. I had the short rib loco moco. I should have sent the dish back because the egg whites were very runny. The gravy was good but they skimped on the short rib. We usually visit several times for breakfast, lunch or dinner on our annual Maui trip but not this time. Doubtful that we will back next trip either. The quality is just not the same. read more

I stayed in the Aston resort that this cafe is part of, and came down one morning expecting a usual hotel breakfast. But to my pleasant surprise the quality of the food is way beyond my expectations. The loco moco has a burger steak that is extremely juicy and flavorful of natural beef - it reminded me of the higher quality Japanese equivalent burger steak with eggs dish. The short ribs on the eggs benedict are so juicy, tender and flavorful. The mai tai is made well and is one of the better mai tais I had in the trip. Sitting towards the back terrace you also have a pleasant partial ocean view with a garden in front. Definitely recommending this place for breakfast if you live close to the area! read more

OK, first thing to know is if you aren't familiar with the area, this place is darn near impossible to find. The sign on the road that lists it takes you to a random parking lot that is so far removed, you'll be walking around in circles (or driving) for awhile trying to find it. If you face the main hotel/apartment/condo that's at the end of the road (with the U-shaped drive through in front of you) you need to walk right, towards the ocean and behind the property. There are two reserved spots (taken so we didn't see the signs) and it's all permit parking. I went into the hotel place and the lady there said that no one actually checks the permits, but gave us a pass to put in our window anyway--so take that for what it's worth. I'd rather have a pass than have a rental car towed, so that's my advice--get one just in case. So, now then, when we arrived it wasn't very busy, and we were asked if we were there for the live music or the sunset. We were there for the sunset, and were seated outside on the deck area. Pretty view. Our server was great. Very helpful and friendly. She even gave the wife advice on a local "greenery" shop. I got the Ahi, market price was 52 I believe. Wife got fish n chips. Her fish was good, she enjoyed it, though thought the portion was small--3 strips, but smaller than most strips from other locations. She said the fries were good as well. She enjoyed the tartar sauce, not sweet. The Ahi was good. You don't get a ton, and it's pricey, but it was our first night and I wanted some fresh fish. They seared it perfectly, with a delicious crust on it. The jalapeno mashed potatoes had a good pepper flavor to them--not spicy--but needed a bit of salt. In contrast the asparagus was fairly salty, but still good. If you like ahi, this was a great dish, but you do pay. DRINKS: Wife got the Lava Flow, a frozen blended drink. She said it was really good, sweet obviously. When I tasted hers, it had zero alcohol flavor--which is what she likes. I had the good old Mai Tai and it was perfectly floated and when mixed a great blend of flavors. Great view, sunset, service, food. read more

Mahi tacos done perfectly- gentle grill marks, tender and moist, exactly right. Corn tortillas also gently grilled, hot with a little texture, they don't fall apart when you pick up these juicy tacos by hand. The salsa is simple amazing too. We recommend ordering the side salad too, one order of tacos (three) and the side salad was enough for the two of us. It's hard to find, literally no signage. You must park where hotel permits are not required, and walk past the hotel lobby to find the path to the beach, past the pools. read more
