Joined my Aunt and Uncle in Maui. We didn't realize how early everything closed in Kaanapali and that side of the island. This place was the only one that was open later according to Yelp and Open Table. We were so lucky! We got the last open table and there was live music that was good. We had so much fun! The best part is we were surprised the food we ordered was delicious! The best dish was the fresh Ahi on a bed of sautéed veggies and an amazing sauce. Their fries are nice and crispy. My uncle had the minestrone soup, he loved it. My aunt enjoyed the Coconut shrimp and the lemon pesto shrimp pasta. We shared everything. Unfortunately, they were out of our first choices. Food: The adult beverages were very reasonably priced for Maui and great (bottle of wine for $30 and cocktails under $15)! My family ordered a couple pastas and the fish and chips. The pastas were all 5/5, the fish and chips were 3/5, but the portions large. Ambiance: We came in knowing they had live music starting at 7, but we could not even believe what we heard. We enjoyed this little breakfast stop with a hippy dipoy 60s vibe. The place was pretty packed, had to notice it was an older crowd (use included), maybe enjoying the retro decor along with the music from back in the day. We sat closer to the bar so the bartender was our waiter....he was on top it! Never had to ask for coffee or wait on service. The food was pretty good too. I had the Huevos Rancheros since I can't turn down eggs with chorizo. Lots of bell peppers, cheese, guac and side of spanish rice. Too much food but hubby helped. This was our first meal upon our arrival in Maui! We were going to hit the L&L Barbecue but it was so crowded we decided to try this restaurant instead. The service was super friendly and everyone enjoyed their meals! I had the Loco Moco, pretty good and super filling! My spouse had the BBQ Kahlua pork sandwich which I tasted a bite of. It was not the traditional flavor because of the sauce, but still a good sandwich. The mochas were also good, perfect for an afternoon pick-me-up. First of all, I will say that we are residents of the island for over 35+ years. We often formerly frequented Java jazz and have enjoyed our time there, until recently. We went with some former Island residents who come back every six months and bring their large family. We often visit Java jazz, and thought we enjoyed it until recently. We went with these friends from out of town to have a good night. All of us wanting expecting to enjoy some music and have a nice time. We shared multiple bottles of wine plus entrées. Later as the owner was cruising the room we thought the he would come by and say hello...Hope you enjoyed your evening! ... But instead , the owner went on a lunatic rampage, spewing all kinds of political crap and directing his anger to one of our friends. He was totally out of line and told us if we didn't like what he said "we could get the fuck out and not come back". He pulled out wade of cash for some reason? to show his manly ? Status? He then began spewing off about his last 3 Ex wives and something about being born from a vagina? We were all in disbelief, staring at each other wondering what the world he was talking about. Obviously, he was out there mentally and does not care about his clients. We were there to enjoy a nice evening out with some good food and music. Needless to say that was ruined.! We will not be back and we will tell others to not go there. And I won't even go into the wild decor of naked barbies in cages and eye opening art hanging from the ceiling. I always thought of Java Jazz as a breakfast place and can only recall coming here for breakfast, but we had dinner our last trip to Maui. I had the spaghetti lemon pesto with shrimp, my husband had spaghetti and meatballs and we split an order of garlic bread. The food was pretty good, very plentiful (enough for lunch the next day), but I'd probably skip the shrimp next time. The decor is fascinating, probably to distract you from how long it's taking to prepare your food. (Kidding not kidding. This place is truly one of a kind. It's a fun gathering spot off the beaten path across the highway from the Kaanapali shoreline. The setting is Barbie torture tiki kitch... lots of original art proudly displayed in a hap hazard way, and an incredibly friendly Alejandro took our order. We have a been coming to the islands for over 25 years, and Java. Jazz has been a great place to hang out and have a meal. We have had breakfast and dinners here and have never been disappointed. Last night, my wife had the filet mignon and I had the fresh fish and both were truly outstanding meals full of flavor, and her steak was as tender as can be. The service is awesome, the ambience is truly funky, but clean, and anyone saying that the place is dirty or smelly is just not giving a proper critique. The walls are certainly cluttered, but the dining area and bar are spotless. The servers go out of their way to make sure you feel welcome and they cater to your every needs.
