I'm judging this place primarily on ambiance. It's a beautiful coffee house! It looks like it's a great place to study or hang out. There are a lot of tables, chairs, and couches as well as large windows and high ceilings. If I was still a student, I would probably come here all the time. Coffee is good, but not great; hot chocolate was delicious! Sandwiches looked pretty good, but I can't comment since I haven't tried any of them. read more

Friend and I had some time to spare as we were waiting for our haircuts so we decided to stop into this little coffee shop. I haven't been to too many coffeehouses except your standard Starbux and Pete's so I'd imagine this is how your typical coffee joint should look. The feel is very Bohemian with different types of artwork adorning the walls, strange music playing, and worn down sofas. We went around 3pm on a slow weekday, so seating was more than ample. Even though it's literally a few blocks from CCSF, I wouldn't say it's the greatest place to study or curl up to a book. The noisy streetcar steps away and the slightly loud music can get pretty distracting. The latte I ordered was pretty decent, can't complain. My friend, Eric who's quite the caffeine addict ordered a regular coffee and said it was pretty bold and flavorful. The place also looked like they had a pretty wide selection of baked foods and sandwiches for those who want a bite with their cup of joe. My only complaint about the place was the service. My friend and I were standing at the counter for literally a good minute before we were approached for our order. Now a minute may not seem like much to those of you reading, but for sure it's a long time if the workers two feet away continue to chat away when they clearly see you standing there. I have been here twice now and 4/5 is greatly deserved! The chicken hummus wrap was DELICIOUS i ate here on my lunch break and after i get back i find out my co-worker has NEVER tried hummus wtf...Well shes also never had pho so im not that surprised... Right on the corner of Ocean and Faxon, just a couple blocks from CCSF, Java On Ocean is far from the typical pretentious corporate coffee shops that litter the streets of every neighborhood. You won't find baristas that think they're sommeliers, or poseur coffee house types that are on the brink of typing up the next great American literary masterpiece. It's fairly large and pops with bright colors and mismatching furniture that consists of about a dozen tables, a bunch of chairs, and a few couches. Plants, a handwritten chalk menu, and singing birds in a couple cages round out the decor. You'll hear all types of music being played, mostly chill house, hiphop, Latin, reggae, etc. They also have a couple computer stations to get your surf on if you don't have a laptop. Oh yeah, the coffee. It's better than good but probably not the best in the entire world. I'm not a coffee connoisseur, but I do know think Starbucks tastes like trash and this is much better than that. They have the usual assortment of coffee and espresso drinks, all fairly priced. They also have other stuff like sandwiches, pastries, smoothies, and all types of snacks, though I haven't tried any of them yet. The baristas are friendly and will bring your order to you. Also a good place to read or work. I come here mostly for the vibe. Coffee is fine, better than average. Nice selection of snack foods. What a great place to meet up with friends from the neighborhood. We all love the Middle East inspiration of the store and the coffee. There are many tropical flavors to choose from, flavor syrups too, and sugar-free syrups as well. They also their flavor coffee by the pound. I love the delights they sell, they are so small with ethnic names, but provoking. There are quite few sofas, so the place doesn't feel crowded even when is busy. Located inside an expansive room with beautiful natural light, and a variety of seating options, this cafe is a getaway for all walks of life. The atmosphere is heightened by two adorable parakeets in decorated cages as well as a vibrant playlist with every genre. They have effortlessly combined Mediterranean tastes and artwork with urban couches and lighting. I highly recommend this as a space for studying since wifi is strong and electrical sockets are endless! My favorite order here is a double latte and the chicken hummus wrap with hot sauce. Also against the norm for typical cafes, the menu includes everything from Mediterranean specials, and fresh fruit smoothies, to purchasing coffee beans by the pound! Gives you that lived in living room type of feel. Older couches, tables and chairs. Usually busy most times of the day. Staff is nice, service is a little bit slow, but the people here don't seem to mind the wait. Drinks are pretty good, and pastries are good. They have the typical offerings for coffee drinks, fruit smoothies, breakfast pastries, and breakfast sandwiches, and regular sandwiches. They also offer some Mediterranean stuff like hummus. Today I had the croissant sandwich, on my quest for decent breakfast sandwich, not from a fast food restaurant. It was good: croissant, egg, avocado and tomato. I had been hoping for sausage but it wasn't anywhere on the menu. But when this came out, I was happy with it. Messy but that is not the restaurant's fault, when you put tomatoes and avocados in a sandwich, things tend to get mushy and messy. I come by here, not alot, but every once in awhile. On the surface, Java poses as a normal coffee shop. Good study place, mellow music, and fresh brewed coffee. But that's just for show. In actuality, Java is actually a Utopia for Hummus Wraps. Vegetarian friendly fasheezy! But if you're a meat-loving, chub-grubbing fellow, you can opt for a Chicken Hummus Wrap. The magic lies in the wrap. It's so crispy wispy that you can hear the wrap shatter into thousands of pieces as you sink you teeth in. The flood of hummus that follows helps to soften the remnants of the wrap in your mouth. (Crisp. HummusHummus. Crunch. HummusHummus.) I'm not even a big fan of Hummus, but this is forrreal the deal. Keep your eye out for this coffee shop whenever you're on Ocean Avenue. read more

My college days were a blur. Sort of. The only thing that really stood out in my mind was discovering this place one afternoon while strolling through Ocean to kill time before class started. I had always walked by this place but never bothered to saunter in until my curiosity got the best of me. After finding the priceless jewel that is the 'bagel with sundried tomato spread', my life was never the same again. Before classes, inbetween classes, and even after classes - I was here. Sometimes I had my nose buried in a book and a bunch of notes - but most of the time I was sinking myself onto the couch with a friend or a classmate and having some tea and bagel and pretending we were cool because we were in there. It's an amazing cafe to just lounge around in. I haven't been back in a while however - only because I know that if I find myself in there, holding a bagel with sundried tomato, I'm going to end up practically living there. Again. read more

If you want tea, the lemon ginger is decent. I like the chair in the bathroom-nice place to put your purse/computer bag down to avoid putting it on the floor. I was very pleasantly surprised to see this cafe still in business after having been gone for nearly 8 years. I popped in recently to get a breakfast sandwich and a drink before work. I do love the atmosphere of this place. Definitely a place that I'd study in or just meet a friend for coffee. Their breakfast sandwiched are yummy and so are their drinks! I had the green tea matcha latte with vanilla, which was very good! The green tea flavor was perfect and the vanilla gave it just the right amount of sweetness. I'm living in Philly for school right now, and am missing my favorite neighborhood coffeeshop. I spent many hours at Java on Ocean studying for the GREs! Anyway, I'm trying to find a new coffeeshop home in Philly, and am annoyed with the hipster places in my 'hood. While the places are clean and unique, I always end up feeling like I'm not cool enough to be there. That's what I miss about Java! The Bohemian, we-take-you-as-you-are vibe. I miss seeing anyone and everyone at Java, from the middle-aged Chinese men to the college students to any other folks from the neighborhood. The coffee there was pretty decent, food just ok, but I really miss the vibe. Biking around the city on a humid Sunday afternoon I stopped here to get a quick thrist quencher. Very chill atmosphere with huge bay windows that give an excellent view of Ocean Ave. This would be a great place to come and work. If you don't buy anything. Not wanting coffee, I ordered an Italian soda should they made with bottled water and served in a non-compostable, non-recyclable plastic cup. I was not impressed. The worst part was that they charged $4 for it. Ugh. read more

This place is the bomb! My favorite here is iced coffee with a shot of expresso and a splash of almond milk. It tastes so decadent that I have asked several times... is there chocolate in this?? The owner is a very nice personable gentleman and the young women the work here I look forward to seeing. Really great laid back cafe. I ordered the egg and cheese on a croissant and a mocha blend. My friend ordered a turkey (bacon), egg, cheese, tomato, avocado on a croissant and a smoothie that was chai pineapple banana themed. We both were so HANGRY when we started eating we were amazed by how good Everything was. I loved the mocha blend. Probably the best coffee experience available in the neighborhood, both for quality of the brew and food, and for the warm service and relaxed ambiance. Java on Ocean is definitely a much-appreciated anchor in the community, primarily because the product is good and Hossam treats his highly diverse customer base with genuine warmth and caring. The decor is funky, but clean, and it's a comfortable place to read the paper or catch up on email. While the main draw is the coffee, don't overlook the Mediterranean food items if time and circumstances are appropriate. While grabbing coffee and scones one Christmas morning a couple of years back, my wife and I were lamenting to Hossam about an upcoming pot luck celebration later in the day for which we had yet to prepare anything. By the time we left, I was carrying a platter of assorted items that were the hit of the gathering (he loaned us the platter as well). Parking is not too bad, as Ocean Ave. doesn't draw crowds. The Walgreen's lot across the street is usually OK for a quick take out, and there's metered parking all around otherwise. read more

I came here about a few weeks ago for the first time. I ordered an everything bagel with sun dried tomato cream cheese. SO GOOD. It was PACKED with cream cheese. It was definitely worth the $3-4 I spent. CON: Inconsistency. I came here two times after and ordered the same thing. I was disappointed by the scarce amount of cream cheese I was given the last two times. This is a good spot for me to work at especially when I need to get things done, there's also free wifi which could get distracting for people like me. There' s also computers at the back, but I'm not sure if you have to pay to use it.... If you have a laptop, make sure it is charged since it is difficult to find an outlet to plug your laptop in. Ambiance is great, the place looks really inviting. Java exudes warmth and comfort which is so inviting since it's always cold and foggy on Ocean. Staff is really friendly too. I've only tried their coffee and it is okay, nothing great. Parking isn't so bad, you can park at the residential area for about 2 hours. read more

Came here on a Sunday afternoon as a second resort since the first cafe I went to was packed. It was equally as busy but luckily, there was one table in the sun that nobody seemed to want so my boyfriend and I took it. Upon ordering coffee, I felt a tad overwhelmed. There was so many things written on the menu. But what caught my eye was the matcha green tea latte written right next to the register. I ordered it with soy milk (which I love that they have). The latte tasted better than what a Starbucks would make but it was a little too sweet for my liking, even with the soy milk. I wanted to order food but nothing too special caught my eye. Like far, far too many places their chai is little more than Pacific Chai's unpleasant commercial slurry with some steamed milk added to it. Is it really so hard to make decent chai or offer tea that isn't dead, boiled water with a tea bag shoved into it? The coffee might be great (I don't drink coffee so I wouldn't know), the atmosphere is ok, and they have a great location across the street from the library, but a place with bad chai simply isn't worth my business. read more

This place is down the block from my house so I used to go all the time. The atmosphere is very inviting, the variety and taste of the food is great... but recently I started paying more attention to the prices, and now I'm turned off. They charge 25 cents more just to toast your bagel... the 20 oz. coffee is a whopping $2.75... little things like that just rub me the wrong way. Most bothersome to me personally: the enormous windows let in plenty of natural light during the day (when it's nice) - they definitely do not need to keep the lights on at that time. I once asked the owner if he would turn them off - he did and then insisted that no, the customers needed them on, even though it made absolutely no difference. I even surveyed a few of my fellow study neighbors and they felt the same. I'm sure I'll be back because it's convenient, but I really wish they would think more practically about their prices - maybe if they improved their energy use they wouldn't be hurting for that extra quarter so much! read more

All I did was go up to the cashier and say " I want a grilled chicken herb sandwich with everything". He immediately took my order and in less than five minutes I had my sandwich to go. Initially I planned to leave asap due to my schedule. But I stayed to killed another five minutes to taste their sandwich while it was still fresh. During my first bite into the sandwich, I was astonished by the taste. The sweet sauce, spicy herb and freshness of the veggies took my tastebud to another level. I never had Middle Eastern type of food, let alone a Middle Eastern sandwich. It was crunchy and flavorful during the first few bites. What threw me off was how soggy it got after the first half was finished. The sauce was pretty heavy in my opinion. Still loved it. read more

Today, an older employee (possibly the owner?) raised his voice and was extremely condescending to me after apparently misunderstanding my order. I have never been spoken to so rudely, and he had no problem spending almost 5 minutes verbally attacking me. Additionally, I was yelled at repeatedly for only having a debit card - no cash - when I have always been able to pay with a card. Unacceptable. read more

He didn't acknowledge anyone who was waiting and because he makes the drinks himself, as well as taking orders, he was slow and could only make one drink at a time. He was abrupt and brusque in his manner. My toasted bagel was just ok. It was really hot and stuffy in the cafe. The counter is ridiculously crowded with stuff and it's hard to tell where you're supposed to collect your order from.
