I went in there one day 2 years ago, sick as a dawg, with a long day ahead of kitchen cabinet installation and nagging. I asked the fella behind the counter with the big, understanding eyes for something that can make me forget I'm sick, and somehow fuel me through to bedtime. Damn if he didn't make me a zebra mocha with some extra octane/magic in it that did just that. Usually when I come here I receive average service with average coffee. Today, an older employee (possibly the owner?) raised his voice and was extremely condescending to me after apparently misunderstanding my order. I have never been spoken to so rudely, and he had no problem spending almost 5 minutes verbally attacking me. Additionally, I was yelled at repeatedly for only having a debit card - no cash - when I have always been able to pay with a card. Unacceptable. read more

Another great free WiFi coffee shop! This place is down the street from the 24 Hour Fitness. The sandwich, bagel, and cooked food selection is great! They also have some good looking red velvet cake!!!Had the turkey sandwich on wheat and it was really delicious! They put in some greens tossed in some really sweet vinagarette along with tomato and mustard! Surprisingly a good sandwich! Also had their caramel macchiato and it was way better than Starbucks! Good coffee, tea, and smoothie selection. Overall, a nice quiet place to eat and study. Very friendly customer service was a bonus! read more

Superr cozy studying place. My friend and I studied here on a rainy day and it felt nice and warm. I love the chicken hummus wrap here. It seems a little pricey, but it is huge and really good. I have also had a smoothie from here and it was quite tasty. The man who seems to be in charge has always been nice to me. I love the space, it is very cozy. Can you say charming? Homey? Comfy, but with no frills? This place reeks of a place where college students and those in the neighborhood can grab a cup of whatever they might feel like -- from hot cocoa to chais, mochas, and even smoothies. This place isn't too much like your typical coffee house chain --the menu is handwritten often and overwhelming. It's brimming with toasted fresh bagel choices, mozzarella sandwiches, quiche, and hot and cold drinks. The counters are literally lined with pastries that look so home made I wouldn't have known unless the cafe at the time I made my purchase had received a delivery of what looked like two Costco packages of baklava. Either way, the selection of foodstuff is impressive. Will need to come back to try more of the items on the menu, but I think I may just need to take a good look at everything on it for about 5-10 min. before I can order anything else. :) read more

I never can seem to get a good cup of espresso here. Let's see... I was in the mood for a vanilla soy latte, so I decided to give JOOCH another try after vowing not to go back because of bad experiences. "Support local business", I thought. This was really early, around 7 on a Sunday morning. Many people were up during that time, and the place was lively as evident with the bunch of them inside relaxing. The employee behind the counter seemed dead though. I saw that he was busy making some kind of cracker-cheese thing, so I waited patiently. I went up to the counter and I stood there for like 5 long minutes while people were queuing up behind me. The gentleman never looked my way, acknowledged my presence, or said a word. I began to think he didn't even work there. Then after the longest time, he finally came over and said "Good morning." Ok..... I ordered my drink and that took the longest time too. People who ordered after me got their drinks and food right away. When I finally received my drink, the same gentleman put it on the counter to the side and left it there without announcing it was ready. When I got to it, it was lukewarm. No, not because it cooled down, but because it was made that way. I tasted it and regretted spending $5 on something that reminded me of warm water mixed with soy milk. I drank as much as I could. Don't get this review wrong, I have had a nice cup of coffee here. Once. Maybe twice. (That was when there used to be more than one worker behind the counter.) But once out of many? I came here when I was in the bay area to visit my sister. I went a day with visiting my friend in the City College area and my friend, Marissa and I came here to have a nice little cup of coffee while walking all around the town and etc. When I came here, this girl named Sindy really helped me out in decideing what to order. I wanted something sweet, but still with coffee and she found something that really made something up for me that hit the spot. This is one of the few coffee places I enjoy getting a drink at and actually staying there to drink it. The couch is super comfy, and the chirping birds are cheerful to my ears. It's easy to sit in there and relax with a friend or by yourself. I always order the same thing-- the zebra mocha, but it's so good I can't branch out. Java on Ocean makes me remember that there is almost always a little time to sit down, relax, sip a cup of whatever makes you happiest, and forget about all the stresses in daily life. Every time I come here I usually plan on ordering a cup of joe and getting out the door, but always end up busting a book or magazine open and chilling out for a while. I haven't tried much of the food other than the bagel (better than your average), but the coffee is quite good and the cappuccino's are even better. In my opinion, you can always judge the competency and class of a coffee shop by their cappuccinos, as many people have no clue how to make them correctly. I have a difficult time studying here because of the live birds that hang out in cages and chirp a bunch - not to say that they're annoying, I just have to have absolute silence when I study. Generally, the worker(s) are very friendly: just a few days ago my total was like $3.05 and I when I handed the guy a 20 he handed me 17 back and pulled a nickel out of the tips. I've never come in the mornings or during rush hour, but I'm sure they might get swamped with a higher volume. I'd suggest coming when you're not in a rush. If you ARE in a rush or running late, why didn't you just make coffee at your house before you left anyways? Buy a damn plastic filter for 4$ from safeway and you can make it in the time it takes to boil water! =] read more

Java on Ocean makes some delicious food, and awesome shakes (I've yet to try their coffee, as I've always visited in the afternoon). They're really friendly, and the ambiance is really great. The huge windows bring so much wonderful natural light into the place, and the birds that live there are charming. They put time and effort into each thing they make (which a lot of people have complained about, but HELLO! This isn't a "everything's premade!" Starbucks! It's an actual cafe! Things are going to take a little time to be made fresh just for you!). The staff is friendly, and they offer good WiFi if you're in the mood to access the internet. This is a cool place to study or write, or meet up with a group. And it isn't limited to just young people, trying to look hip, but people of every age who just want a decent cup of coffee and good food. Four stars because of the kind of funky neighborhood. The whole place has a much different feel than the rest of Ocean Avenue, which has other stores and restaurants that are a little bit funkier, and feel less finished and sophisticated than Java on Ocean. The neighborhood around Ocean Avenue is not much fun to be in when getting to Java on Ocean, and hopefully will clean up a little. It feels like Java on Ocean would be better situated on a place like Filmore or Sacramento street. read more

What a great neighborhood coffee house! If I lived close to it, I think I'd swing by all the time. The house coffee is good (and served piping hot - it was still giving off steam 10 minutes after I picked it up), and the sandwiches are delicious (and generously portioned). I got a turkey sandwich to curb the hunger pangs, and it was really really good - they toss the lettuce in what appeared to be balsamic vinaigrette -- a trick I'm definitely going to remember for home use. The interior is cute, a few table/chair sets, sofa/coffee table and a cute window seat area that I scouted immediately. There is also a cute resident birdie that sings melodically while you're sipping on your java and while I was there, a visiting birdie wandered in off the street to check out the joint for a bit. I love their Raspberry white mocha!! When I use to go to CCSF this was a spot worth walking towards if your heading to walgreens! I would come here from time to time to just order the raspberry white mocha! It is so good! =) Sometimes I would choose this place to meet up with friends just to socialize or study for midterms or finals. THe place is a casual place but I think its very decent. Although parking isn't so bad just park up the street at the 2 hour parking spots in the residential area. I haven't been here at night just only in the mornings and some afternoons and its a nice walk if you have a big break between classes. It does the job. Nothing horrible nothing special. I live a few blocks away from this coffee shop and sometimes when I need a quick cup of coffee or somewhere to get decent internet this is where I go. The girl that works there is really nice and attentive. The only thing I do love about this place though is the sitar music I hear every time I come in which is a hell of a lot more interesting that the mainstream pop music. So if you're looking for amazing coffee maybe this isn't the place to go. But if you're just looking for something quick then it's definitely a good spot for that. read more

3.5 stars. Ahh... not much has changed about Java on Ocean since my last visit about seven years ago. This quaint and charming little coffee shop has an ample amount of open seating, big windows for people watching, the occasional musical entertainment, supposedly free WIFI (didn't have my laptop with me, but just saw the sign and a bunch of people burrowed in their laptops), and a good selection of blended and espresso drinks available. Prices have gone up since I last visited. There is also a wider selection of food now. Nothing too special about the coffee, it was just okay. Good place to study if you're a student, telecommute if you're working, or lounge about if you're just looking for a place to enjoy a good read. read more

I've gone to this place several times to study with friends and the people are great, but on some days, it's a real miss. I mean, I can spend my whole day here; enjoying the sun shining in the store while drinking coffee and studying, but sometimes when I come at night, the people seem really irritated. Twice have I gone when they'd tell everyone to leave earlier than closing when it clearly says they're open till 9pm. I work at a food business as well and although my co-workers and I have to start cleaning up the store, we still give customers till the actual closing time, and also an extra ten minutes to finish up. I don't know, but I guess it's just me being biased? Other than that, I really like coming here in the afternoons; actually prefer it. The place has a great atmosphere and lighting for relaxing or studying. It does get pretty hot in there sometimes. Sometimes when you use their WiFi, there's some kind of 1 hour time limit, but I always exceed it without it kicking me off, so I don't really know what is going on with that. This place is really just an average cafe to me with the absolute perfect location of being a walkable distance to CCSF. read more

My first time at the coffee house and I have to say I like all of the space because at most coffee houses u have to fight to get a spot. I also have to say I liked the coffee a lot I ordered the white chocolate raspberry or something like that and it's delicious, not too sweet with the perfect hint of raspberries. What I didn't like what how expensive this place is for how small the cups were. My mom ordered a small and this cup is tiny for 3.95 or around there I know it was close to four bucks...I'll include a picture so you know that a small isn't for you if you're a coffee lover. There are also a lot of snacks to choose from which is good but I didn't try any so it's good there is a lot of variety but I just don't know if I like spending the same amount on Starbucks or Peet's for a tiny cup of coffee at this place, can't do it. read more

I just tried this place for the first time today and I think it is absolutely delicious. I can't believe it took me this long to try out this place which is so close to my house. I ordered a chicken hummus wrap and a white chocolate raspberry mocha with soy milk. The hummus wrap was very large and it is reasonably priced (6.25). The hummus is delicious and the chicken was very tender. The white chocolate raspberry mocha with soy milk is incredibly smooth and delicious. It was about 4 bucks for a small cup so that was a big pricey but definitely work it. They also have free wifi and who doesn't love that. It is in a great location too. read more

I used to come here a lot when I had to attend group meetings for some sort of class. I remember the place being affordable and friendly, without your usual cues of laptop junkies dominating the landscape. (I looking at you Starbucks!) Came here again this past saturday when I needed a pick-me up in anticipation for a grueling move day for my friend and his fiance.
