I wasn't particularly sure what I wanted and I was already in the convention center. The young lady at the counter was very nice and very polite and very welcoming. She told me that they originally had a different location, a true brick-and-mortar location, but they decided to change it to this location dislocated in the convention center, which I personally think is a very good option because of all the people that frequently visit this location I think the value was good for what food I got, I decided to get the whitening fish, a chicken wing fried okra and macaroni and cheese. Everything was on point. The macaroni cheese literally came out as I was ordering my meal, and I had to get it as an additional Side. There is a lot of sitting because it's located inside of the food part of the convention center so it wasn't a long walk from the convention center halls to this particular location. So, this restaurant was on my list to visit, and I finally made it. I walked into the restaurant to get a menu, and there was a noticable odor as soon as I walked in. I was not sure what it was...a little indescribable. Plus, there was a runner on the floor leading to the counter, and it was so sticky. Then, walking on the floor, it was just as sticky. I went to my car to look at menu, and was debating whether to order something, or keep on going. I decided to give a try due to good reviews, and the food looked delicious from pics. I ordered the combo 1 with the wings and fries, and also ordered the pork chop sandwich with fries. Neither the wings nor pork chop had much seasoning, but fried to perfection. I do not have a problem with under seasoning as I usually add hot sauce. The fries were cooked good; but one thing I noticed when I took my first bite of the chicken -- it tasted (or maybe it was the smell still in my nostrils) like the odor I smelled when walking in the restaurant. Fried fish and chicken dominate the menu, but there are other interesting things like pork chops, alligator sausage, etc. I wanted to try everything but settled on just a few things. Got single pieces of catfish and perch, and the sausage sandwich, with some fried okra. The fish was good. Nice thin batter, maybe a little overcooked but not bad- tender and flaky inside. The sausage was great. Actually pork and alligator, it was juicy and tasty. Served on a bun with grilled onions and banana peppers, I wolfed it down. The fried okra was good- big portion, nicely breaded and cooked. I want to try the chicken and pork chops, and I saw sweet potato pie so of course I need to have some. Hours are pretty much weekends only, so check first. Great service, decent prices. Bathrooms are a little odd- there's a little hallway with the women's in it, but the men's is in the main room. The catfish meal with fries and or onion rings is superb. The way they season that fish with those great seasonings and the fries are seasoned well as the good onion rings. My wife had the pork chop meal that was tasty and we enjoyed the chicken wing and fish combo too. The service and cleanliness of the establishment makes it a great place to return to when I go back to Columbus Ohio. Tried it for the first time, some good, some average? As some have mentioned that whiting is sliced thin. Tasty, cooked well but you need a 3 piece dinner, not the 2 piece and that's almost $15. Added one wing for $2.25, a bit pricey but good. Mac and cheese was good, fries were not real hot and a little soft. Could be that they weren't the way I like them, you might be ok. First time at JD's. We had the perch sandwich, onion rings, three pc. chicken, and fries. All were excellent. Service was outstanding and patient with us while we tried to decide what to order. Sweet folks there. And the ambiance was just what you would expect from a southern specialty food joint. Simple and functional. I came across this spot as a recommendation for Black Restaurant Week online. I'm always in support of Black Owned Businesses. Parking was blocked in front of the Business but there's parking on the side. Greeted right away. Cashier was nice and helpful. They were out of beef ribs and brisket @1p but there were other options of course. Decided on a half slab of the St. Louis ribs and 2 combos. Whiting and tilapia with wings. Chili and Buffalo were our choices. Plenty of seating inside. Decor was ok. Clean and no fishy or overpowering smell of chicken. Fish was not seasoned as much as I'd like. Fries were blah but substituted with green beans and greens. Those needed seasoning as well. Fish was cooked to perfection regarding texture and flaking. Wings were great. Added vinegar and hot sauce to greens and that made them better. I'd go back but would ask for extra seasoning for sure. Ribs were TENDER, not too much sauce. I'd prefer a little more on the side maybe. Time to wait was about 20 min. I'd go back for the wings. I'd go back but only in passing. I wouldn't go out of my way for it. Food was good. Sometimes you just want plain fried fish without the high ticket price and fancy ambiance. This was the place. They were out of onion rings, coleslaw, and baked beans when we went on a Saturday at 5 pm so I had to accept the French fries. They were decent. Tartar sauce is in foil packs like ketchup which was mediocre for me. I was hoping for good tartar sauce. We ate inside (food is still served in Togo containers) and it is reminiscent of a southern fish-camp style restaurant which I was happy to see. I get tired of all the upscale looking restaurants. A nice non chain place fit the bill for me that day. I did try to order fried pies. They were out of those as well. I give it 5 stars for just serving affordable fish. My family had JD's today and everything was fast, hot and delicious! My son said the all beef hot dog was BUSSIN! Lol but seriously the whole wings were crispy and flavorful. Had dinner yesterday. Did the Wings and catfish combo. Both were great. DW did the Whiting is was very good. She got the greens; fabulous. The breading on the food has a slight salt and peppery bite. This establishment was within walking distance so I came over and sat down for a late lunch and OH BOY when I tell you that I wasn't disappointed I mean that $hiT... OMG, the food was sooooo damn good!!! Upon entering this fine establishment I quickly noticed the cleanliness of this restaurant! That's a very important feature to me because that dictates how I'm going to enjoy my meal! The service while I was ordering was quite pleasant as the young man that was taking my order took took the time to answer my questions about the menu items. After ordering I went to the restroom to wash my hands and just like the dining area the restroom was immaculately just as clean! As I was coming out my food was being brought over to me as I sat down! Hot & Fresh!!! I Wholeheartedly enjoyed my meal and I am giving this restaurant five stars, if there was an option to give Jd's Kitchen six stars I would do it! I can't wait to come back one day soon! But I was torn because their fish looked good as well. So I decided to order the sausage, some fries and one piece of fish. The cashier was really nice and complimented me on my cologne (nice way to start off the transaction). However, she was not the cashier who helped me. The gentleman who assisted me was kind and professional. I did like the seating area, it was a decent size and they have a nice sized flat screen on their wall. When my food was done, they brought it over to me. The cashier immediately told me he would bring me another piece of fish because the one he gave me was smaller than usual. I thought this was a nice gesture. I was really impressed with the juiciness of it. I did not get much of an alligator taste, but it was not bad at all. Terrible,terrible,terrible! The first sign we were at the wrong place is when I ordered the 12 piece tilapia on the menu for $32 and they ring it up as $36. I show the guy the menu and he reluctantly gives me the $32 price listed on there but he then tells me they charge $4 per piece of fish‍. Not only that but the fries on the menu were listed as $2.50 but they were charging $3.00. At this point, I didn't want to piss the guy off any further and just let it go. Then we go outside to sit and wait and while sitting a white lady pulls up in a car with Aldi's groceries. It takes a her a little while to unload all of the groceries and guess what she took them right in the front!
