The Black Dog Gelato is such a cute neighborhood dessert spot. When we went around 10 PM on a Friday night, luckily it wasn't too crowded, so service was friendly and quick. They didn't have a huge flavor selection, but they covered the basics (vanilla, strawberry, chocolate, hazelnut etc). I chose the pistachio and it was so good and really satisfied my sweet tooth. They did samples when I visited, so I tried the goat cheese caramel, but it was a bit too tangy for my taste. There isn't much indoor seating, but they have cute, little patio seating just outside. Parking isn't ideal if you're coming from a long ways away, but I'm guessing a lot of their customers live close by to walk to it. We may have to visit again before we leave, but high recommend! read more

Honestly the best thing about this place is how nice their presentation is. Service was slow and the staff were rude. They were annoyed and short when explaining what some flavors were when I asked. There was a constant awkward and weird feeling while we were there. We got their Goat Cheese Cashew Caramel and Malted Vanilla Pretzel. The gelato is much prettier than it is tasty. The pretzel was the better of the two, but that doesn't say much. The texture was more like ice cream and it was not satisfying overall. Pricey considering the lack of quality and flavor. read more

The goat cheese flavor is prominent & there is plenty of thick caramel and cashews that compliment the goat cheese. I decided to indulge in a two scoop selection of birthday cake and mint. It was delightful. If I ever need a sweet treat and I'm near by I'll definitely consider stopping in again. So much variety in the flavors - which was really refreshing, as I know a lot of ice cream places can get monotonous/repetitive with what they serve. Prices are high because of course they are so fuck it. Try some anyway because it's some cool stuff. Because it was hot I needed to cool off so I stopped in. It's about $6 for a regular cup, which is a lot. That's as in the price, but they fit a lot in the cup as well. Lots of flavors to choose from. Some non dairy, and I got the Dairy Free Lemon Passionfruit. Cool flavors. This was both sour and sweet. Could have gotten more but it's expensive. That's the only bad thing about it. Head to the Ukrainian Village one because the other closed. It's all good except for the prices. Have been going here for years now as my family has a black dog and we thought it was fun to visit "his shop". It's a small shop with quick counter service and no indoor seating, but if it's nice out they have outdoor seating, and the neighboring blocks and wicker park are lovely so I tend to get mine in a cone and walk around when possible. Favorite flavors are the Sweet Corn (sounds odd i know but so good), the Raspberry Chocolate Truffle, and the Dark Chocolate. The sorbets are usually good too, especially on really hot days when you want something lighter. Yesterday, my two scoops in a sugar cone came out to $7. I got here a little before 10pm and was saddened to see half of their freezer was empty. I was really looking forward to getting their butterscotch bourbon pecan flavor gelato. The other flavor I wanted was expresso chip (which they had) and chose goat cheese cashew caramel as my second scoop. The expresso chip was as delicious as expected and I was pleasantly surprised with the goat cheese flavor. The cheese flavor is subtle and the cashew caramel flavor dominates more, but there's definitely a stronger dairy flavor profile. I wouldn't necessarily say it tastes like goat cheese though. They also give samples, so don't be afraid to ask! They have such good gelato- dairy and non dairy too! This place even dedicates one day for non dairy! The best idea I've seen! So many places either have all dairy one just one non dairy. More than one usually has coconut as the base for non dairy ( but not all, they vary) There's multiple options. We have a hard time getting a number one ... for non dairy we love both mint and the lemon passion. There is one that when we went (might be updated now) didnt have indication that it had coffee.... Almost gave it to my kiddo (don't give my kiddo. Coffee).... I tend to have a strong taste bud for cofffee so when I thought I tasted coffee I asked and they confirmed.... Everything I've had here has been incredible. Service is always good but I don't really care... the ice cream is the star of the show. It's expensive but it's some of the very best ice cream I've ever had, and I LOVE ice cream. The flavors are interesting but not too crazy for most people (personally I would be open to even more unusual flavors). It's not too icy and not too rich. Does not leave a buttery film like some ultra-rich ice creams do (not good). The flavors are strong, balanced, well thought-out and just exceptionally delicious. The vibes were bad here!! This was our 3rd time trying to come here because the first 2 times they were closed when they were supposed to be open. We walked in and they were so unfriendly it was so uncomfortable. They didn't say a word to us as we asked to try things (again our first time) I even apologized for trying 2 different ones because they were so annoyed. When we were leaving the lady rudely said dogs weren't allowed for next time. Luckily for her there won't be a next time! If they were rude because our dog was in (we saw online they were allowed) they should have politely told us when we walked in it would've been no big deal! I got a kid's scoop of the Peach Tea Sorbet flavor which was from August! I thought it was super creamy & had a yummy peach flavor. The tea flavor definitely came through but it wasn't too overpowering with just one scoop. I felt like one scoop was perfect for this flavor - two scoops might've been too much tea flavor imo. My friends got the same flavor the week before and thought it was too icy then, so the texture of the sorbet might vary as i believe it was dairy free, so it's harder to make it creamy. read more
