Life is short. F.....it up! Family, Flavor, Friends Was for my annual visit in Falmouth. For those who follow know that my all time fav place for chowder is Crabapple. Well this time I had my chowder there and this was last minute stop for dinner before heading out. Decided on the clam chowder and a cheese burger and onion rings. This place has been here for years serving vacation goers. Ppl typically get the fried clams which are large and good. This time I opted out. The cheeseburger was good tasty like u would expect at any clam shack. The onion rings were the beer batter type not the kind that falls off like other places. Decent slices of onion in the nice batter. Now to the chowder. This chowder after 1 sip your like woooow! Keep in mind that I just had the chowder yesterday so I got to compare. Just enough chunks of clam, onion, potatoes and other earth goodness. But for me I'm a broth guy and like to add crackers. But the flavor just resonated with me . This place was a contender. We savored Jim's Clam Shack the last day of the season before they closed up. Six of us went. That was my wife and our dog, my wife's friend who I ran a half marathon with the day before, the friend's sister who ran much faster in the same race, and the sister's husband, and me. We, my wife's friend and I, had passed the place at mile 12 of the event -- my running companion is long suffering, since I use a run-walk method timed by telephone poles (2-1, 2-1, 2-1). We already planned to return. Research, including here, had suggested it would be a good choice for lunch, and it was perfect. The full marathon, scheduled a day after the half to allow those wishing to test themselves a two race weekend, was headed past us as we dined. It was sunny but windy on the water where they have three picnic tables. We were the first in line. We were there early, before they opened. So we walked the dog a bit and cheered on the runners -- my wife prompted me to do that. She said I would have appreciated it, which is true, except, as I retorted, it seems strangely a parody if it's a random individual doing it rather than a little group organized for that purpose. With six people, we were able to sample: lobster roll, fried lobster roll, clam belly, clam strips, onion rings. Seafood is what to order when you are at Cape Cod. I had not understood until recently the clam strip and the clam belly are different parts and hence different orders. I wouldn't pick the former. But my wife doesn't like the latter, for being too visceral. The lobster was simple, as it should be, the meat on a breaded bun. The fried lobster roll was, other than the preparation, similarly straightforward. The clam bellies were plump and moderately breaded. The clam strips were plentiful, with French fries. The "boat" option omits the accompaniments (the fries and also cole slaw). The onion rings were standard fare. The pricing was average. The had all the toppings you'd want, whether hot sauce, ketchup, mustard, tartar, or whatnot. The lead staff person was enthusiastic in greeting everyone. She was chatty. I asked whether the marathon was good. She said it was except the crowds made for a crowd. She assured me Jim was real. They are not family though. She was friendly enough I felt I should tip extra. I put additional cash into the jar. If I were in Falmouth, I would go back. Since I don't expect to be there again, at least not soon, I'd encourage others to patronize it. The Cape Cod half marathon, I also would opine, is a well organized race along a scenic route. If I were to return, it likely would be to compete in that. read more

For fresh fried seafood, Jim's Clam Shack can't be beat. They serve generous portions of lightly battered clams, fish and scallops with perfect golden fries and coleslaw at market prices. On hot summer nights, it's quite pleasant to sit outside in the sea breeze at one of their picnic tables overlooking Falmouth Harbor. We had dinner here on Monday July 15, 2024. Sadly I have to say this place was very very disappointing. I have written several reviews and I have to say this is one of the worst places I've ever eaten. My wife and I each had a dinner. I purchased the fried whole belly clam strips and my wife had fish and chips. Fried food can be super greasy or very clean this was super greasy. You could taste the grease. It was terrible. On top of that both the french fries my wife had and the onion rings I had were lukewarm at best. And finally the coleslaw was horrible . Fresh seafood isn't cheap, so you can go to Seafood Sams if you or Popeye's fried chicken for their shrimp if you want a bargain, but if you want fresh seafood, with a great light batter, that's fried but not greasy, Jim's Clam Shack is the place to go. I've eaten at a lot of seafood places in the Falmouth area over the past few years, but Jim's Clam Shack is by far the best for whole belly clams. Only had the opportunity to eat here four or five times this season (2022), each time getting either the whole belly roll or plate. Went twice in one long weekend. The clams are sweet, and the breading is light- they are great. Parking can be tight, as there are only a few spots in the lot, but there are several metered spots on the street. Wife and I ride our bicycles, so no issues for us. Sitting on the dock watching the boats come and go is just perfectly relaxing. Overpriced tourist quality food. For $65 we got a overcooked and tasteless small size lobster roll on a cold hot dog bun and order of XL Clam belly. The lobster roll was shreds topped with two larger pieces of meat to mask the quality. That would have been fine but it didn't taste like anything. I didn't know lobster could taste like nothing. The clams were mostly bread and a bit soggy - I like a crisper breading. Left still hungry as an XL is about 1.5 handfuls of clams. The view would have been nice but they park the sunset cruise boat out back and so you can't see the water. We left right before 40 people descended on the landing to board. Uncharacteristically, I came to Jim's Clam Shack friends - without first checking Yelp! I'm glad I didn't see the 2.5 star rating or I might not have come. Jim's Clam Shack is aptly named as there's not too much too it. A handful of four seat tables in a very narrow space that faces the length of the restaurant kitchen. Outside there are several large picnic tables that comfortably seat 6 and could probably accommodate 8. Our service was quick and they use a PA system to let folks who are sitting outside know their food is ready. The view from the picnic tables was gorgeous, though the sailing ship Liberte' was not moored at the dock while we were there. There was also a pleasant sea breeze that made eating outside a great option for us. Our party of six had the whole belly clams, add-on lobster, add-on fried shrimp, fries, coleslaw, and onion rings. The fries and coleslaw were just okay while the beer battered onion rings were a perfectly browned, crispy deliciousness- definitely try these. The whole belly clams tasted very fresh and the cooking grease seemed clean. The shrimp were about what you'd expect, crispy, tasty but didn't wow me or anything. I liked that they use single-serve condiment packages for everything since they get that moist, salty air all day long. Wifey and I had the big plate of whole belly clams which comes with fries and slaw. We ordered two add-on shrimp plates, onion rings, an iced tea and a bottled water and our tab was a little over $70. It was a lot of food and was served quickly by friendly staff. While a bit pricey all in all I will certainly visit Jim's again soon. read more

One of the worst places I have ever eaten. Ambiance is a zero. I've had a lot of clams and these were just lackluster and bland. The fries served were old and not even warm. Cole Slaw inedible. We first ate at Jim's Clam Shack ten years ago and it was fantastic. The seafood was fresh and the fried everything was crunchy and tasty. Ten years later, we again ate at Jim's Clam Shack and we were sorely disappointed. We ordered fried clams, scallops, fish and shrimp and, except for the scallops, everything was terrible. The fish in the fish and chips was mushy and probably frozen and it was poorly cooked and it did not hold together and, most importantly, it did not taste like fresh cod or haddock; it barely tasted like anything. Likewise, the shrimp was slippery (not in a good way) and was not fried well. In addition, the fried clams were very disappointing. They tasted old (not fresh) and they were mushy with no crunch - very, very disappointing. The only item that tasted good was the scallops, which were fresh and tasty. Even the French fries were poorly cooked and undercooked (with several fries still raw) and the cold slaw was inedible. We will not be returning. Jim should get back to work and buy better product and cook it well. read more

Buyer beware. We have been going to clam shack for more than 20 years and under previous owners it was one of the best. Since changing owners a few years ago it still retained some of its quality food and has the most spectacular view. I'm sure what we ordered last night is the reason of us are ill this morning. No question the clams were bad - as well as the batter they were fried in - likely old and not clean oil.
