We usually go to this location for either breakfast or dinner approximately once a week or so. Last three times we noticed an unpleasant smell and not sure where is it coming from! It smells like over used cooking oil. Today we decided to give it one more try, but this time we walked in and quickly turned around and walked out because of the smell. The restaurant is going down the hill, front entrance have never been cleaned as the over sprayed chemicals on the floor has left a discoloration on the door. Was nearby and craving pancakes so we dropped in for breakfast. Jim's has great pancakes and these did not disappoint! They satisfied my craving in every way! We also ordered biscuits and sausage gravy. Just awful. We got a plate of broken up biscuits (no, not sliced, just broken into big chunks) with broken pieces of overcooked, dry and hard sausage patties covered in white gravy with no seasoning whatsoever. Didn't look good and certainly didn't taste good, and I've never said that about biscuits and gravy anywhere else. After two bites of hope, we just gave up. I went to Jim's restaurant location on Hillcrest. That building has been there more than 40 years. It has not one time in 40 years. Been renovated or updated or carpet changed or any type of upkeep. It looks absolutely today we went and water was the carpets are old. It looked dirty and dingy. The food was great as usual, but I'll never go in there again. It was just horrible looking. We read online that Jim's was open 24 hours so when we walked in 20 mins before closing time, we had no idea. Audey was very friendly though. She sat our family in a corner table & made us feel welcome! We ordered pancakes, French toast & a huge yummy omelet. Every bite of our food was fresh & delicious. We were all pleasantly surprised. Our service from Audey was more than fantastic! She went above & beyond to make sure we had everything we needed. She checked on us regularly but not too much. I visited Jim's while in the city for work. I wasn't expecting much but was pleasantly surprised. I enjoyed it so much, I stopped by again on my way back to home. I had pancakes, eggs and bacon. Everything was delicious. The pancakes were some of the best I've had. The service was great. The atmosphere was pretty quaint. The inside was clean. I don't know about the bathroom because I didn't use it. I will be back. read more

Negative Experiences - Repeated Pattern of Poor Service Date: January 30, 2026 Time: Approximately 9:15 PM Location: Jim's Restaurant, 11593 I-35, San Antonio, TX 78233 My wife and I walked into this Jim's location around 9:15 PM. An older Caucasian woman behind the register saw us enter and walked away without acknowledging us. She went toward the kitchen and said, "I'll be with you in a minute," but instead stopped to talk with another middle-aged Hispanic woman. They continued their conversation while looking over at us. Eventually, a Hispanic server approached and told us we could sit anywhere. The restaurant was not busy, there were no tickets in the window, and they close at 10:00 PM. We sat down but were never given menus, greeted, or acknowledged again. Instead, the server cleaned another empty table thoroughly and then walked away toward the kitchen without saying anything to us or offering menus. At that point, I asked my wife if she was ready to leave. We stood up and walked out. No one asked why we were leaving. Unfortunately, this is not an isolated incident. Jim's Restaurants have consistently been negative experiences for us over the years. I do not want to assume intent, but the reality is this: I am Hispanic, my wife is Black, and only at Jim's do we repeatedly experience being ignored, stared at, or treated like an inconvenience. At a previous Jim's location near 410 and Perrin Beitel, we waited at our table for 15 minutes without service and walked out. At another Jim's location (I don't recall which), we were seated and given drinks but never given menus. A couple who arrived after us were greeted and served immediately. Then an older Caucasian woman arrived, was seated, and the server sat in the booth chatting with her. That was the final straw. I spoke with the manager, who comped our drinks. We stopped going to Jim's before COVID and decided to give it another chance after a few years--only to experience the same dismissive behavior again. So long, Jim's Restaurants. We don't need you. We left and went to Denny's, where we were greeted immediately and told, "I'll be right with you--give me just a minute." That is what basic customer service looks like. Please address this. I went to have breakfast one day and when I see law enforcement officer I always pay for the meal anonymously, when I went to pay I received a phone call and was distracted and did not notice that I was over charged. I called and was told to come in and speak to a manager. When I went in I spoke to Tommy the manager on duty and he wouldn't really want me to speak, and totally discounted my complain. If you haven't eaten at Jim's lately you should try it again. Our experience is that the quality of food has returned to its pre-covid greatness and the prices are right. We ordered out recently and I had the Rib Eye steak dinner which was excellent, cooked as I like it. We've also eaten in the restaurants where the friendly service is also back. read more

I've been to Jim's about 3 times this month. Our server was the best! Tris was our server and she's always so patient and answers all my questions about the menu. She always has a smile on her face and always very attentive. My coffee never goes empty. Food: tortilla soup is delicious, so is the cheese soup. Carrot cake is just ok. Omelettes are delicious. No on the onion rings. Burgers are good. Make sure you tell your server how you want it cooked. Pork chops have a good flavor but they're kind of to thin. Pancakes are pretty good as well. Over all good experience and make sure you to tip the servers. This is how they make a living. Apparently Texas has a $2 an hour minimum wage for tipped employees, which is terrible. read more

This review applies to ONLY the Jim's Restaurant at 1604 and Nacogdoches on Friday, Sept 13, 2024. Had the fried catfish and it was, as usual very, very good. The green beans were good. The cole slaw was the worst I've had in San Antonio, but I've only been here since June of 1983. It had absolutely no taste, no creaminess. Want good cole slaw? Go to Sea Island. Three fourths into my meal, the server finally brought my "Texas Toast", which was fine. Because of this oversight and no attempt to refill our drink glasses,s I would rate the service as mediocre. At no time did anyone suggest an appetizer. It's just as well as my experience at this property is that they tend to bring appetizers NOT ahead of the main meal but with the main meal at the earliest. A poor experience today. read more

She was no where to be found few minutes later she came she took it back and few minutes later again I get the second one And again meat literally raw. Wth! These ppl do not know how to tell rare from well. I told her again she takes it back for second time. She says if I just wanna replace with something else. I tell her I want chicken fried chicken. She offers to bring cranberry juice. Order comes back for third time and I get a chicken fried steak instead of chicken fried chicken..omg. So freaking annoying frustrated already. They literally hire people off the streets with o training whatsoever. We go up to manager. Tell him about all this inconvenience and if he can do something like a discount something. Wife and I have been to this restaurant many times. But this time it was the worst food I have ever had. One of my favorites is chicken fried steak. I know the stake is thin but this time it was literally chard and the cook cover the burned stake with gravy to cover it up. By far this was the worst food I ever had at this location. I frequent Jim's very often. So I do have my favorite staff, Jane, Lisa, and Jackie for breakfast. My evening choices are Audi, and Sloan but never ever have I had a bad experience! The staff is ALWAYS friendly making you feel at home. The food has always been good, some food items are OK but this is Jim's guys not a Mexican restaurant nor an Italian restaurant it's your NEIGHBORHOOD go to place, I never have to worry about if the food will make me sick or give massive heartburn lol. The establishment is clean and no riffraff to complain about. Yes sometimes on certain days there is a wait but in all it's worth it. IHOP closed down, down the street leaving Jim's to carry the weight which can cause a wait BUT be patient the staff and the food will make it worth the effort! MY GO TO PLACE I LOVE THEM!!! Personal favorite recommendations over the years: Fried Mushrooms, Chicken Tortilla Soup (love the melting cheese garnish), Chicken Parmesan with Fettuccine Noodles (extra noodles), Catfish & Shrimp (Catfish tender, fried shrimp impressively tender, coleslaw kinda sweet but not overloaded with mayonnaise, fries are soft but not mushy) Not so recommended: Eggs have never been good, Steaks have been chewy, Vegetables are very limited in selection and always watery, Tex-Mex options usually mediocre and overpriced considering the myriad of options nearby (although maybe not in the early hours!) This location specifically has a open floorplan, always seems to be a little more populated but never too loud; one of my preferred locations. Service here is typically good to great. A long time family favorite, because of it's home style cooking, we've always enjoyed coming here for breakfast. Food always comes hot and made just right, service is fast and with the Covid restrictions they have put laminate between each booth to separate customers and make everyone comfortable in their seating arrangements. Menus either come made of paper or you can scan a code and since they are also sanitizing between customers, you feel very safe. Service is always friendly and fast. I've given this place a 5 star review because this is as good as it gets at any Jim's restaurant. I wouldn't go to any other location, its very hospitable! read more

Absolutely love this place for breakfast or lunch. Always go with the family and at times it does get busy and there is a bit of a wait but it's mostly easy going. The staff are wonderful and always tend to your needs, they're always nice and such a pleasure to be around with. Both chops had great girl marks and MOIST inside; unlike the micro-planed shaved see-thru brethren I endured at a local Mexican establishment (I still have flashbacks...ugh!). My lightly scrambled eggs were fluffy and satisfying, as were my crispy hash browns. While sipping my hot cup o'Joe I had a whim for a slice of pumpkin pie ('tis the season, don't judge). It was nutmeg-forward, but in a good way. Have always liked this location (Nacodoches/1604) and the staff's welcoming demeanor is consistent. Jane, my server was always zipping by asking about my coffee and other things I might want for this visit. The tree in the lobby made me smile and reinforced the season sentiment.
