I'd be surprised if you ever said anything nice about anyone in your life. Jim's is a wonderful place with good food, a great view, and that at-home family atmosphere that is lacking in most places these days!! I was only in Kentucky for a week, visiting some friends and we ate there two days in a row!!! To be able to sit outside and watch the Kentucky River flow by while enjoying an appetizer of raw oysters and a few cold beers, is a real treat. Everything we ate was fresh and delicious and the service was excellent; the owner / manager even came around to see how everything was. Talk about class! Based on the mixed reviews and the fact I didn't see any other food options around I decided to give this place a try. I visited at 2:30 on a Sunday afternoon and the place wasn't very busy. I was immediately seated and got a drink. So far so good but the rest of the visit wasn't very memorable. The servers aren't very attentive or efficient at their jobs. Many tables stayed dirty with hardly any patrons around. I think they spent more time talking amongst themselves than waiting on the customers and keeping the place clean. I got a southern catfish dinner. The cole slaw was promptly served and was pretty good. It has an ever so slight hint of heat probably from the horseradish mentioned in another review. The portions were uninspired for the pricing. The catfish was decent and helped by the creole dipping sauce. The sweet corn was straight forward. The hush puppies were nice but small. Once I got my food I was practically forgotten and had to wait a long time for refills and my check. The inner decor was a throwback to 90s cheese and the music was some light pop. I'm giving Jim's Seafood two stars for the view. What makes for a "waterfall" in Kentucky is the backdrop for this establishment. Located in the capital city of Frankfort, I at least hoped that this would be some good down home cooking. I was sadly mistaken. I had the salmon with green beans and rice pilaf. The green beans were probably frozen and then mixed with the fatty parts of bacon (it didn't work). The salmon was pretty good. The seasoning seemed to mask something though (yikes). Then there was the rice that was underwhelming (it was far from a pilaf). At the prices that they charged, I feel like they just took our money. I must say that I won't visit here again, and I cannot in good conscience recommend this place to anyone else. Sorry Jim... take a lesson from Gordon Ramsey and start using fresh ingredients!! read more

A pretty dang good little seafood place down by the river. I've been by it several times, but never gone in until today. I went down there for lunch, and one thing I noticed right away is it has an outstanding view of the Kentucky River. Once inside, it's apparent that the dining rooms are built specifically to show off this view. There is outdoor seating overlooking the river, but on this very rainy day that wasn't an optioni. The service was decent. Drinks were refilled promptly, and the server was polite and efficient. I did notice the clientele trends towards the middle aged and elderly when I was there (midday for lunch). I was clearly the youngest person seated there. Did not change the quality one bit, but it made me wonder slightly about bringing small children there. The food itself was actually quite nice. I had the lunch special and unsweetened iced tea, which was a fried whitefish sandwich with fries and cole slaw. The slaw itself was served first, and had a good texture (not too dry, not too soupy) and flavor. I detected a little hint of horseradish in the slaw. The sandwich was flavorful, and for being fried was definitely not too greasy. The french fries were typical crinkle-cut fries, nothing special, but they were warm and not soggy. This entire meal came out to $11, with gratuity. It was a fair price to pay. The entire place reminds me of the kind of places my family ate at when I was a kid. read more

Two stars for the view and the cold beer. It's the sort of place where the crab is fake, the fruit is out of a can and the answer to "what local beers do you have?" is "Sam Adams". The waiter gave us a menu before we sat down and asked us if we wanted an appetizer, Ummm we haven't even seen the menu yet! Pretty much everything is fried, I ordered a shrimp cocktail which came at the same time as my salad. My sister order a fried fish plate with was below average but edible. I ordered a shrimp salad which was horrible and I only ate 2 bites, the shrimp appeared to be spoiled. Don't eat here go eat fast food over this. read more

I wanted this place to be a five star review for me, sadly it was not. First, the good things. The girls working there were great. They were funny, knowledgeable about the offerings, and prompt with service, especially with keeping my drink filled which you all know by now is the main thing I care about. It is the employees that get this place the two stars that I'm offering. The bad. The food wasn't even so so, it was very bland. I have actually had better fish at a chain restaurant and you all know that i despise chains! The toast on my buddy's sandwich was burnt, they didn't have about a third of the things on the menu (they told us it was because of the 127 Yard Sale being that weekend and they hadn't received their truck delivery yet however with everything else in just going to have to say this is how it usually is), and the interior decor is awful... so bad in fact that it literally made the meal and experience worse than it probably actually was. They need to update the interior, add flavor to their fish, and either keep their offerings in stock or reduce the offerings on their menu. I wish them the best of luck. read more

Spending the night in Frankfort and found this restaurant on the internet plus recommended by an employee of Buffalo Trace. My friend and I ordered the Bourbon Glazed Salmon which was drastically overcooked and tough. My Brussels sprouts were barely cooked. My husband's mashed potatoes were so stiff this his fork stood straight up. He also ordered the key lime pie which was green...key lime pie is not green. Either they made some changes based on past reviews or the bad reviews were not true. Drove down here from Campbellsburg for something different. We were not disappointed. Beautiful view. A little disappointed there was no outside seating. I got the scallops and my fiance got the Southern style catfish. Both were good. The sides were fine as well. This is the third time in maybe 15 years that I have eaten here. Each time I have said I will never come back to this dive of a "seafood" restaurant. This time is the charm. Nice server but poor food. The salad is iceberg lettuce with a bit of tomato, onion and cucumber with a few small croutons. Sad. The grilled catfish had no flavor at all. The baby shrimp were so breaded and greasy as to have no shrimp taste. The fried oysters were decent. Not great but ok. The fried okra was pretty sad too. You can get better food at Captain D's. Been here twice there won't be a third! The first time was ok but the second time not so much, waited forever before being waited on, our appetizers were brought out before we got drinks. Several other guest had even gotten up and gotten their own refills, the food was not very good and we had nearly finished before one of the orders for a salad had been brought to us.. not to mention having to ask for silverware, asking for dressing and chasing down refills. read more

My husband and I had the Alaskan white fish platters comes with 2 sides. We had a very nice salad (not iceberg) with homemade blue cheese and a baked potato plus coffee. The fish was cooked to perfection and it was very flavorful. They do serve real butter, real sour cream and half and half which is a sign they use quality products. So we went last Friday and the beginning of our visit did not start off great. We waited to be acknowledged by the hostess for about 20 minutes while she supported customers paying and then walked away from the counter before asking if we needed help. She then came back and still another 10 minutes before she asked if we have been helped. We gave our name and still had another 15 minutes, even with the Covid restrictions it was not that crowded. Once we got seated, it still was like we didn't exist. Finally got waters and we were ready to order the waitress left after delivery the waters. We aske the next round if we could put in our order she took our drinks and she was gone again. We were then ready and finally able to give our order. Do not waste your time, or money here. Has really declined since last visit. Grilled seafood platter was lukewarm, mashed potatoes from a box, and the southern catfish was only 1 piece so so for 11.99. I think they could be a little more generous with the portions for the prices, and they could give you more than 2 hush puppies. The decor is very old, worn, and needs up dating. read more

I must say I haven't eaten here since I was a child in the 70's. Interstate 24/70 was closed in Chattanooga so I detoured my rig thru Louisville and decided to see if I could get some family to meet. No Restraunt had any capacity for the most part due to Derby Day except for Jim's. Take what you can get eh?!! Living in Savannah for many years I was totally overwhelmed by the flavor of all the food. We ordered 2 plates of grilled shrimp, Bourbon salmon, fried green tomatoes, sea scallops would melt in your mouth instead of being rubbery chewy, Boston Scrod... and the 4 plates crab legs that were so fresh and sweet to the palate we told the waitress to take the basket of condiments back. You didn't need extra flavoring on this food. It was just that good!!! I expected the crab legs to be like have been sitting in the water for days and soggy, I don't remember anyone even using the cracker to get the meat out! Even the baked potato was FRESH! It's funny but a few days before I had one with a steak and the skin was so hard where it was reheated for days it was too tough and hard to eat. Are you getting the idea I was really impressed?!! Having a smorgasbord, the 5 of us we ordered key lime pie and blackberry cobbler. Hands down the cobbler was, well as I told the waitress I was from Kentucky so I had to have a bite of cobbler! Our waitress... the worst part is she did such a tremendous job that I wished I had her name, but I hadn't seen family for a few years and...my apologies. We have eaten at this place with friends several times. It is always short on service: too few employees for the crowd. I got the whitefish. It was so over cooked and chewy I could hardly eat it. I would have complained but our server never had time to check to see if everything was ok. She didnt ask us if we wanted desert: it took forever to get the bill. We didn't linger over our food but it took an hour and a half to eat because of the slow service . My friends are leaving Frankfurt and I don't think this place is worth driving from Lexington to experience their cuisine so I'm pretty sure we are done. read more

I've been dining at Jim's Seafood practically since the day they opened their doors. During that time there have been numerous changes in management and even the name of the restaurant has changed. The seafood is so-so, but the riverside location of the restaurant almost makes up for that. The last time I was there, I thought the best word to describe the place is "tired." The interior is dated, the menu never changes, and when I ordered a mixed drink before dinner, it came halfway through the meal, mainly because the liquor is kept in the office! A friend and I had lunch at Jim's Seafood yesterday and I was so disappointed. When we walked in the hostess looked pissed and never smiled and our waitress only checked on us once. The food was ok but over priced and the only thing good about it was the view. I apologized to my friend I was with and told him Jim's Seafood was a great restaurant when Jim and Betty Ashcraft owned it. I will never go and eat there again...A far cry from its former glory. Ill start off with Bad, then the Good. Don't expect fast service, but we had an excellent waiter. I am a local (been here many times) and I have always thought, this place needs UPDATING BADLY. Other than the pretty view of the river, that's about all the pretty there is. My salad was not very fresh, but I ate it. But other than that, My entree was so so YUMMY! I got the grilled swordfish. And it was divine. So juicy and perfectly seasoned. I have to say, food was better than Joe's Crabshack!! The white fish will just melt in your mouth, and the shrimp skewer was large and really good. This has been a locally owned business for 40 some years. Great atmosphere overlooking the river with a small dining room. However, it is hit and miss. Lunch seems to be better than dinner. Last visit it took about 15 minutes to get greeted, so I decided we better go ahead and place our order. We order fried banana peppers as an appetizer and they are great! When they brought our appetizer they finally brought us our waters. We got our salads shortly after and seemed to be ok other than no water. We sat for another hour before our meal came and finally got another water. Fried clams and mashed potatoes took an hour. Again, I have had several great meals here in appropriate amount of time. Since I was a little kid my family has made Jim's Seafood a good place to go when one was a.) craving seafood and b.) looking for a great view with an awesome meal. With an overlook at the river and a terrific menu the problem is leaving. I absolutely love this place. If you go, you have to try the fried banana peppers; this is a common enough meal but some places just excel at the little things as much as they do the large, that's Jim's Seafood. If you are looking for somewhere to go with your family Jim's a great place to go as well, I know because as I child this was one of my favorite places to go eat.
