I had friends visiting from the East Coast, and I was so excited to show off LA's incredible Thai food scene. After some research, Jitlada seemed like the perfect choice--tons of rave reviews, celebrity endorsements, a Zagat rating... it looked like a guaranteed hit. Sadly, it turned out to be one of the worst dining experiences I've had in LA. We came for lunch on a Sunday, and the service was flat-out awful. The servers were inattentive and unfriendly--it took an unreasonably long time just to get our order in. Even after I reminded them, they still managed to forget my dish with no apology. To be fair, the food was good, but nothing extraordinary--and definitely not worth the poor service or the hype. The ambiance was actually quite nice, with traditional Thai décor, ornate furniture, and walls covered in celebrity photos. It gave the place some charm and character, but unfortunately, that's where the positives end. There are so many other Thai spots in LA that offer both amazing food and respectful, welcoming service. If you can stomach the wait, then Jitlada is a great spot for a great Thai experience in LA. At Jitlada, you can get all the dishes normally available every where else in LA but you can also try something that's a bit more unique. We're a huge fan of the larb, with this intense flavor, and the tom kha here, with the soup being one of the best we've had anywhere. The crab fried rice may seem basic but here they top the fried rice itself with a ton of crab. Some of the more unique items we get here are the morning glory salad, duck krapow, celebrity chicken, and usually we go with some sort of fish with lime juice! However, it's a big menu and not all will hit. One particular disappointment were their crispy pork dishes with the pork's not really crispy. Dishes here are quite small, so I'd say 2-3 dishes per person is the way to go when sharing. For dessert, we usually go with the mango sticky rice, and they got a good one here! Service can be hit & miss. It's so busy here all the time, you may need to ask several times. Parking lot is small so most likely street is your best bet. There's many good Thai spots, especially in Thaitown, but Jitlada is an institution for a reason! read more

This place literally scammed us. We were so excited to try their collaboration with Two Hommés at Eeeetscon, and we ordered their noodles. When it came out in a tiny bowl, we were shocked by how small it was. It was only about three small bites. At first, I thought it was just overpriced, but later I saw posts from other people getting the same noodles served on a full plate, not in a mini bowl! I was really excited to try Jitlada, especially since I've heard such great reviews. Flavor-wise, the food did not disappoint, it honestly reminded me of my aunties' cooking, which I loved. That said, there were a couple of issues. First, the timing of the dishes was off, everything came out separately, and our last dish arrived cold, which was disappointing. The bigger issue for us was the customer service. My boyfriend and I both felt completely invisible the entire time. No one checked in on us, and when we tried to get someone's attention to reheat our panang curry, it was really difficult. At one point, a staff member acknowledged me by looking at me but didn't follow up or ask if everything was okay. We came around 10 PM when it wasn't busy, so it was surprising. Unfortunately, the service was so lacking that we ended up having to get up and ask for the check ourselves. We would still give Jitlada another try, because it may have just been an off night. I went here with a few friends on a Wednesday afternoon for lunch around 1230 pm. They close at 3pm for lunch. It was not crowded at all and we were seated quickly. We ordered the fried papaya salad, green curry with chicken, pad Thai with chicken and crying tiger beef along with 2 orders of rice to share. My favorite was the fried papaya salad - ir had a nice crunch to the batter and it still somehow tasted light with the fresh aspects and the flavor. My least favorite dish was the crying tiger - I think on their menu it's one of their popular dishes but I found the beef to be overcooked and a little tough and the portion was smaller compared to the other dishes. I heard Jitlada was one of the top places to go to in Thai town besides Ruen Pair, so it was next on my hit list. I came on a Sunday afternoon around 1 and was expecting a long line, but surprisingly we got seated immediately! We went a little overboard and ordered 5 items: shrimp papaya salad, crispy duck rolls, spicy crispy pork noodles, crab fried rice, and garlic tiger prawns. Everything was super flavorful, especially the crab fried rice and tiger prawns. I would definitely ask them for mild if you aren't good with spice, because most of the dishes were spicy. I know we ordered 5 items so the bill wasn't going to be cheap, but each individual dish was $20+ and portions weren't even big. A Must-Visit for Authentic Southern Thai Cuisine! I have to say, our dinner at Jitlada Southern Thai Cuisine on a Saturday night was absolutely fantastic! My wife had found this spot after doing some research, and I'm so glad we took her recommendation. Not only is the food incredible, but the whole experience was memorable from start to finish. We were even told that the owner is close friends with Selena Gomez and Benny, and that they've actually had the restaurant cater some dishes for their wedding! How cool is that? The owner herself was there, and we had the pleasure of meeting her--what a gem! She's so welcoming and funny, really making us feel like we were part of the Jitlada family. It's clear she puts so much love into the restaurant, and her hospitality took the whole dining experience to another level. Now, let's talk food. We kicked things off with Thai tea, which was the perfect sweet and refreshing start. For appetizers, we had the Celebrity Chicken and Crying Tiger Beef--both were incredible! Then for our main dishes, we went with shrimp fried rice, drunken noodles with chicken, green curry with chicken, Tom Yum soup with seafood, clams, and squid. Everything was packed with flavor, fresh ingredients, and that authentic Southern Thai taste. The Tom Yum soup was especially noteworthy--bold, spicy, and perfect for the cold evening. AMBIANCE: Parking: Small plaza parking, metered street parking, and neighborhood parking. Welcome to El Lay, read the parking signs carefully and plan ahead of time. Seating: Pretty spacious, great for small groups but they can make adjustments, all indoor seating with capacity for about 50 people. Vibes: Welcome to Los Angeles - ThaiTown! You're close to Hollywood and can even get a good view of the sign. It's a pretty busy place so plan early for traffic and such. The spot itself is very homey. You're welcomed with familiar radio pop music and the restaurant is decorated with a mix of photos of their dishes, awards, and Thai culture. Great place for a solo or group food adventure. FOOD: Soft Shell Crab in Curry (Recommend) You can truly get overwhelmed with their menu. However I know Thai culture prides themselves with their spice, curry, and seafood. This dish captured it all as it was also featured on their Yelp page. This is a great choice from the delicious crunch, portion of spice, and the seafood flavor richness of the soft crab meat. Jazz Burger (Recommend) Surprised this is a "secret" menu after countless interviews she's done about it. I love the story behind this burger regarding racism/discrimination. As for the experience itself, definitely be prepared for the spice but also a nice sweet flavor to it. It has a kick, the burger is medium rare which makes it pretty juicy. I received it protein style, which helped reduce the carb intake. Thai Tea (Recommend) A standard Thai tea that with your sweet and creamy flavors. If I didn't live so far away, I'd come here ALL THE TIME! My favorite dish by far is the crab - get it with the garlic sauce. It's super flavorful and peppery - and the leftover sauce is amazing on rice. The leftovers taste better the next day! Everything I've tried here has been absolutely delicious. The pad see ew has the softest noodles with the perfect amount of chew and it's both comforting and yet has a special jitlada twist to it. The crispy pork, papaya salad, and curries are all delicious too. Every time I come I try something different and I haven't been disappointed yet! The spice level is SPICY here (except for the spicy smoothies) so make sure to ask about that if your heat tolerance is low. The owner and staff are so kind and sweet. One of the best restaurants in Southern California by far. I've eaten here probably 20x and each and every time, it gets better and better. They have a huge menu and the flavors in each dish are beyond amazing. The owner, Jazz, is always there and makes you feel like you are eating in her home. She is so welcoming. Most items are spicy so you can't handle spice, let them know ahead of time. I just can't get enough of their food. I always recommend starting with the morning glory salad, getting a tasty noodle dish and depending how many are in your party, have at the curries and stir fry's from there. If 2 of us go, we generally do the salad, noodles of some sort and 2 other dishes. Two small issues however to be aware of: parking can be hard to find especially on a Friday or Saturday night and they don't take reservations so sometimes you may need to wait a while to be seated. the Southern Thai Curry Crab here, and it was absolutely spot on--fresh, fragrant, and perfectly spicy! The sweet crab meat with the rich coconut curry sauce was finger-licking delicious. We also had the crab fried rice , which was fantastic. Every grain was fluffy, slightly chewy, and full of wok hei. It actually reminded me of Cantonese-style egg white fried rice--simple but super flavorful. One of their signature dishes is the crispy morning glory salad. Tangy, refreshing, and so addictive with that punchy dressing. We also tried the tiger prawn mango salad. I expected a traditional mango salad, but here the mango was deep-fried! The sweet-and-sour dressing with that crunchy texture was really unique. That said, it felt a bit similar to the crispy morning glory, so I'd say pick one or the other. For dessert, we had the mango sticky rice . They use Thai sticky rice with that chewy, pointed grain texture, very traditional. The mango, however, was Mexican, so it wasn't as fragrant or sweet as Thai mangoes. Everything was tasty, bold, and had that street-food charm, though some dishes seemed a bit adjusted for American tastes--more fried items and a slightly sweeter profile. The cusine features primarily Southern Thai dishes that have a kick of heat more than most main stream Thai dishes Highlights for us were the Jungle Curry, Yellow Wings and Morning Glory Salad Definitely order some Thai Iced Tea to have at the ready for when that extra heat kicks in. We also got the chance to meet Jazz! Jitlada's famous matriarch and she was soooo nice. She made some recommendations of more dishes to try when we come back ...and we'll be doing just that! Been following Jitlada since the pandemic, finally had a day to be in that area so I was excited to finally try it. I've seen so many shows and YouTube vids about it so I was more than ready. I was greeted and seated immediately because I came right when they opened for lunch. The place looked cozy and tiny, but when they seated me, there was an additional seating area through a doorway, doubling the space. I got the pad kee mao with beef, thai fried rice with tofu and a lychee coconut smoothie. The fried rice was the most freshest and flavorful I've ever had! The pad kee mao confused me when it came, it didn't look like what I thought I ordered. I had envisioned pad see ew, but my mouth had said pad kee mao. But it was fine, I wanted to try something new anyway. The lychee coconut smoothie was a perfect pairing with it, tasted a little more lychee than coconut flavor, but that was okay with me. Great service. They answered my questions and requests and took care of everything I needed, including my Husband's to go pad thai. It was more than half empty for a weekday lunch, as compared to the large crowds for dinner. Service was unassuming, but decent and the food came out fast. Ambiance is simple and clean but I enjoyed all the celebrity photos. The taste, however was not as good as I remembered. We started with chicken larb, which was just okay. The southern style boiled noodles with lamb was good, but the spicy flat noodles were quite bland and not spicy at all! We ended with sticky rice with mango, which was good. I did notice there was a large wait outside when we were leaving. From the food to the service, this is a solid 5 stars for me. PANANG CURRY - 5+ stars. Absolutely perfect preparation, so delicious! I've been here a few times over the years, and it's basically the Cheesecake Factory of Thai food: there's a ton of stuff, and it's pretty good, but not "wait in line for more than ten minutes" good. We waited in line for over an hour once, and the food was very anticlimactic. If I'm waiting in line for an hour, the food better be good enough to make me forget about the line. It wasn't.
