Papaya salad, crispy pork pad thai, clams with chili paste (a la carte) and rice
    Zoe T.

Lacha Somtum is one of my husband and I's favorite Thai restaurants in Thai Town. As in the name, this place is known for their papaya salad (somtum in Thai), but they have an extensive menu and everything we have had here has tasted very authentic and delicious. The restaurant itself is quite an open space with multiple tables and armchairs, so it feels very cozy like you have entered someone's house. The service has always been good when we have gone (come over to check on us, refill water), and the staff remember us because we have visited a lot over the years. It's pretty fun to order multiple dishes and share family style, and the leftovers still taste really yummy the next day. Some of our favorites to get here include the crispy pork pad thai, crab pad thai, crispy grounded catfish salad, koong kroob, and all of their curries. My husband and I visited on Friday evening after work this time, and we ordered Thai papaya salad, crispy pork pad thai, and clams with chili paste. The food came out pretty quickly this time because the restaurant wasn't busy, but it usually takes about 15-20 minutes for the first dishes to come out when they have a lot of orders (because they cook it fresh). Everything was so flavorful as usual and a good amount of spice (we got mild). My husband really enjoyed the clams because of the addicting Thai basil and chili sauce (goes really well with rice), so they will probably become one of our regular orders as well. I've seen a good diverse mix of Thai and non-thai locals eating here, so it caters to everyone's palates. ***Do note that they make everything at authentic Thai spice level, so mild is already going to be pretty spicy! If you truly love spicy food, you can dare to order medium but I can't handle it very well (my husband enjoys the medium but it makes his nose runny). I hope you will all try out Lacha for some delicious Thai food in LA!

I love Thai food and have been to plenty of places. Lacha has one of my favorite versions of Pad Kee Mao. The noodles are excellently cooked in a dry wok and isn't overly soggy like at some other places. I like the green beans they add as a vegetable, and the flavor is very well balanced with the white pepper. I've also gotten the crab fried rice here, and it is similarly excellent with a great umami flavor from the crab. Service is excellent, and the ambiance is cozy. Only complaint is that the air conditioner can be weak, so the place can get a bit stuffy in the summer months.

4 stars I've lived my entire life in LA without ever having stopped by Thai Town for Thai food for some reason. Well, today, I changed that by stopping at this restaurant. It's definitely got a casual homey vibe to it. I particularly like the comfy chaises and sofa chairs. I ended up getting my usual test dish - Pad Thai ($14). And added Crispy Pork (+$3). This was delicious. Unlike many of the Thai restaurants in SGV, the pad thai here also had dried shrimp incorporated in. It definitely gives the dish a chewier texture than I'm used to. The crispy pork was spectacular and went well with the pad thai sauce. Would definitely recommend this. Authentic is probably the best word to describe this restaurant. The menu had quite a few dishes that I haven't seen in a menu before. Service was alright. Unfortunately, parking is street and metered parking only. Where I parked, it was 1 hr parking only.

    SP12. Crispy Fried Larb

My family and I stopped by Lacha Somtum for lunch on a Saturday around noon, and I was surprised to see we were the only party in the restaurant. Given how highly rated this place is on Yelp, I expected it to be more crowded during lunch hour. It's possible that many diners opt for takeout instead of dining in. Between the four of us, we ordered three appetizers and one main. For starters, we had the fried larb, Esaan sausage, and koong krob -- deep-fried tiny shrimp mixed with flour. It's hard not to rave about the fried food here: every bite was incredibly crunchy without being greasy. It's the kind of food that makes you feel just a little guilty, but it's absolutely worth the calories. Both the koong krob and crispy fried larb were dishes I've never seen at any other Thai restaurant. I honestly wish more places offered these because of how delicious they were. The crispy fried larb (ground pork mixed with dried chili, roasted rice, lime juice, cilantro, and green onion, then deep-fried) looks a bit like a falafel from afar and even has a similar texture on the outside. But once you bite in, you get all the bold, sour flavors of larb. The tanginess is prominent without being overwhelming, and the crunchy shell takes the texture of the ground meat to the next level. The uneven grooves of the koong krob pick up the sweet and sour dipping sauce beautifully. This dish is ASMR perfection -- every bite delivers a satisfyingly loud crunch. The Esaan sausage was another hit. On its own, it perhaps a little dry due to how lean it is, but the flavor is intense -- savory, slightly sour, and packed with herbs. The accompanying peanuts, ginger, and lettuce were great to pair with each bite. For our main, we shared a massaman curry, which had a deep coconut flavor and a rich, thick texture. Unlike some curries where oil pools on top, this one was fully blended and smooth throughout. If you're looking for delicious, less-common Thai dishes, Lacha Somtum is a must-visit. If your go-to Thai orders are pad thai, pineapple fried rice, or pad see ew, you'll definitely find those here -- but you'll also discover new favorites that you probably haven't tried before.

Came here to try their hot pot. We ordered the Esaan Hot Pot, Mama Sue Noodle Hot Pot, and Duck Larb. Esaan Hot Pot - The broth of this was quite unique and pretty good. It came with pork, vegetables, glass noodles, and rice. Although, I wish they provided more toppings. They provided extra broth on the side. Mama Sue Noodle Hot Pot - This was a tom yum soup and contained many toppings inside. It was delicious and the taste reminded me of Laksa. Duck Larb - This was also pretty good and very flavorful. It was savory, a bit tangy, and the texture and taste reminded me of pork sisig. Overall, pretty solid Thai food. The dishes were kind of salty, but still flavorful. Excellent service as our waiter came by to check on us frequently.

I came with about 6 friends and ordered a variety of things off the menu. The food was amazing!! we tried the pork jerky, one of the papaya salads, larb, and one of the fried rices from what i can remember and the quality of the meat was great. our server was also really nice. they have plenty of options for indoor seating!

This Thai restaurant is worth going out of my way for! It is authentic, flavorful, and such a good price. The service here is so great too, they are so friendly, attentive, and polite. I ordered the mama sue hotpot and it was delicious. The flavor was incredible, and the portions are pretty large. We also tried the papaya salad, which was bright and fresh. And my husband ordered pad see ew, with pork belly, and I know it sounds basic, but it was actually the most delicious thing we tried! I will definitely be back!

Came with a party of 7 on a busy afternoon and was seated quickly. The staff was very patient as we were getting situated and deciding what to order. The "mild" spicy papaya salad was quite spicy. The BBQ chicken was on the dry side. Everything else was seasoned and cooked well. It was a hot afternoon and didn't feel like the AC was on, our whole party was uncomfortable from the heat. Parking on the street with meter. Be vigilant when parking on the residential areas as there are a lot of transients/homeless

Unique spot because they have abundant Thai hotpot items. I liked the Mama Sue Noodle Hot Pot due to the tasty creamy sour/spicy tom yum broth that paired well with the thin noodles. The Duck Larb was pretty good with a mixture of crispy textures and delicious sour touch to it. The Esaan Hot Pot, which I judge mainly on the broth, tasted okay.

It's been years since I've been here so second time back because we were craving a solid spot for Thai Papaya Salad. What we ordered: -Combo Papaya Salad with shrimp and crab (we opted for the fish paste) -Nam Khao Tod (crispy rice salad) -BBQ Chicken The papaya salad (made a la Laos/Thai style) was legit! Pungent and stinky, but like a good kind of stinky. It was super delicious and flavorful. If you want an authentic experience of a papaya salad, Lacha Somtum mos def delivers. Nam Khao Tod was delicious too but the papaya salad stood out more on our mind and on our taste buds. BBQ chicken is as expected and served with condiments. We also got sticky rice, which is a must with the dishes we ordered. Service is attentive and courteous, as expected at most if not all Thai restaurants. Can't wait to come back when I'm craving papaya salad again! YUM!

Love love love love this place!! I lived in los Feliz for 3 years and this place was always the spot to eat because of the great service! Truly the best service!! But the best part is the food! You can't go wrong with what you order bc I've had a taste of 7 Ross's here and it's been amazing! The ambiance is alway so warm and cozy and comfortable to enjoy a nice lunch or dinner. I will miss them now that I have moved away from LA but I will definitely come back to eat here on my visits.

I'm not a Thai food expert but I do know pad see ew is a noodles dish that's offers a sweet soy sauce flavor. Never served spicy. I didn't get to try the dish but when I asked my co worker how it taste she said it was spicy and not sweet at all. I'm not sure that was an authentic pad see ew. I ordered from the lunch menu and got the tumeric chicken, with steamed vegetables and paid extra $7 to substitute for a papaya salad. I asked for #2 spice level but it was not spicy at all. Other co workers said they asked for medium but it was way too spicy. So it looks like their spicy levels are inconsistent. At the end I apologized and she was like "it's ok, next time." And she was genuinely fine with it. She reassured me not to worry about it. So I'm determined to come back to tip her because if anybody deserved a tip it was her. I ordered Pad Thai with tofu- I like to order peanut sauce on the side and the woman found it interesting and struck a non judgmental conversion about it. I could really tell she was genuinely curious. This was my favorite dish. It was good. I also ordered spicy fried rice with tofu and spicy panang curry with vegetables. I chose 4 out of a 6 for spicy and it was not spicy at all for me. The rice was fine, nothing extraordinary and nothing bad. The panang curry was yummy. I don't know if it's regional but it was very light in taste and light in thickness. BUT I enjoyed it for what it was. Felt like I had gotten home made chicken soup or something like that comforting and not overly processed. Maybe it's because I ordered it with no protein and just vegetables. I ordered a lot of food so I explained to her that I was going to eat some and take the rest to go. When she brought the food she brought it nicely packed without a bag. She also made sure to say "take your time, no need to rush. We close at 8" and it was 5pm. Again, it felt genuinely nurturing, she wanted to make sure I felt taken care of and welcomed. It meant a lot because I was frazzled from forgetting my wallet and from having a hard day at work. This was my first time here and it won't be my last. There is a small lot on site. This place is by far my favorite Thai restaurant and that's why it's so disheartening to write this…read morereview. I have written at least 2 glowing reviews of the restaurant in the past and wish this could be one of them, but it's not. Over the last 4-5 days I have tried no less than 2 dozen times to call the restaurant during proper business hours to order food for pick-up as I often do. The phone rang and rang to no avail. I live too far from the restaurant to just pop up and place an order so I rely on calling ahead. I have been a customer of this restaurant for at least the last 9 years and have almost never had the aforementioned experience. Though I do recall not being able to get a call through several times on one or two occasions in the relatively distant past. Today I was finally able to get a call through and began placing my order which includes shrimp. I ALWAYS request the tail (with shells) to be removed from the shrimp as I find it quite difficult to enjoy my meal if I'm constantly having to pick off shells with my hands. It's unsanitary and messy. Removing the tails from 15-20 shrimp prior to adding to an entree or soup should take no more than 60 seconds and that's if one is moving at a glacial pace. However, today I was told that the kitchen was too busy to honor my request. I assured the lady taking my order than I was a loyal customer and make this request will every order I place and it is always honored. She repeated her claim that the kitchen was too busy and refused to do it. I cancelled my order and ended the call. Now I usually order food from the restaurant 4-5 times a month and usually spend about $65 each time not including tip. That is approximately $325 per month of my hard earned money that I give to this restaurant in exchange for great food and service. I am appalled and quite upset that having been a loyal customer for almost a decade and spending as much money there as I do per month that they could at least honor my patronage by simply taking an additional 60 seconds in the kitchen to make my meal more enjoyable. Her refusal to do such a minuscule task has deeply soured my experience with Hoy-Ka not to mention the fact that I could not reach the restaurant for almost a week by phone for no apparent reason. I will not be going back to this restaurant until they rectify this situation.

It would've been nice to be asked earlier. I even had candles in my bag just in case we got dessert. Anyway, this server said he'll tell our server about not offering dessert. The next day I came back with another friend after a Music Center event. My server from the day before recognized me. This time he asked us at the start before we ordered or after we had just ordered whether we'd like to see the dessert menu. Huh? Ask at the END not start of a meal! Instead of embarrassing him, I told him, "No, thanks. My bday was yesterday." On this second day, my friend and I shared a Chinoise salad (delicious and refreshing!) and paella (not like a paella, a little too wet and granular for our taste, but healthy - a living food dish). We had mint and lemon water for both meals. $12 parking in the adjacent structure. Free parking passes at the Music Center if you're a season ticket holder or good luck with finding street parking. I'd still continue to occasionally patronize this restaurant when I have Music Center events bc I want to support veganism, the restaurant; however, I was disappointed with some of the food and waitstaff this weekend. I'd suggest that the waitstaff go thru customer training on when/what/how to talk to customers. Incentive from the website: join the rewards plan - 300 points for 30% off the bill and 100 points for a free dessert! I'm aiming for the free dessert!!

NOW FLASH BACK TO HERE. i to echo park only seeking dessert and my friend SHOVED ME over to this tiny cute little establishment. little did i know my upcoming flavor explosion. the sticky rice was WARM, coconutty, sweet and absolutely melted in your mouth while still holding firm, not necessarily mushy. i almost shed a tear. it was STEAMING. and the condensed milk drizzled on top went above and beyond... it was definitely coconut that added just another level of tropical warmth ugh. and those MANGOS??? GIRL ITS APRIL, NOT SUMMER??? yet they were the sweetest, softest, most decadent mangos on planet earth. with that bit of mint, every bite had me in ecstasy... and a food coma. THIS is mango sticky rice. and i WILL be back. also, tell me why i just sat down next to Ian from Smosh. that man's been loving thai food since youtube's inception... and obviously he has impeccable taste *fangirls*

Came here for a quick bite before a walk around the lake with a friend I haven't seen in a couple years. I loved our server and overall experience here I appreciated. In terms of food, the panang curry was more watery than I had expected. It had a lot of nice vegetables and a big serving of rice on the side. I thought the flavors were there but it could have definitely been turned up a little more, but wasn't bad for something quick. My friend got the satay and this was more my style. I love a good char and meat on a stick and this satisfied my craving.

However, as we were wrapping our dinner, all the tables were filled and we felt a bit of a push to hurry up to pay and leave. The waiter didn't say anything to push us to leave, but when you see them giving you the bill before you could finish your food or ask for it, you feel a bit pressured to eat faster. The three of us opted for family style and ordered four entrees and a side of white rice to share. We ordered the stir fried crispy catfish, the sautéed morning glory, the shrimp salad, and the pad kee mao with chicken. The total came out to be about $33.28 per person including tax and 20% tip. I think that's very reasonably priced. We also did not have to wait long at all for our food, which we were so pleasantly surprised. This is definitely a place to go if you want good Thai food and have a short meal break. We ordered and finished our food in less than an hour. We parked a few blocks away in the neighborhood. The parking situation in that plaza was a nightmare. There were cars honking and almost hitting the cars in the front or in the back. I don't live anywhere near Hollywood, but if I do come to see a show at the Pantages Theater in the future, I'll make sure to swing by again.

To share, we had the following dishes: -Tom Yum Shrimp Soup: Spicy and sour in a good way. The shrimps were also juicy. -Papaya Salad: Crisp and fresh. -Pad Thai w/ Chicken: Solid and not too sweet. The noodles were cooked well. -Roasted Duck Over Rice: Good, but nothing mind-blowing. I would've loved more of a roasted feel and flavor. -Pad Prik King: A good amount of meat and flavor was good. -Sauteed Morning Glory: Honestly my favorite dish here. I loved the crisp veggies and flavor. -Beef Jerky: Surprisingly not bad. An elevated beef jerky. Everything was solid, but I've had better versions of each dish elsewhere. Nothing stands out, but this is a good standard for Thai food. The service here was really good and attentive. I appreciate the servers taking on all the requests hurled at them from the people in my group. They also helped with a water spillage. Parking can be tough since the area is popular. It's valet parking only in the lot in front of the restaurant, but you can also find some free spots around the area if you don't mind walking.
