I came to JL Patisserie expecting to spend five minutes picking up sourdough starter. Instead, I found one of the busiest--and most impressive--Saturday morning bakeries I've visited in Phoenix. After searching online, I called one of JL Patisserie's other locations to ask whether they sold sourdough starter. The employee told me to head to the South 24th Street bakery because it was the location selling fresh starter that day. As someone who's just getting into sourdough baking, I really appreciated being pointed in the right direction before making the drive. When I arrived around 7:45 on a Saturday morning, the parking lot was overflowing. After circling for several minutes I finally found a spot, only to discover a line nearly reaching the door. Normally that might discourage me, but after walking inside it became obvious why so many people were willing to wait. The first thing that surprised me was the bakery itself. From the website, I had expected something that felt a bit older. Instead, the interior was bright, clean, modern, and beautifully designed. The open bakery, sleek white finishes, updated equipment, and thoughtfully arranged displays immediately gave the space a polished feel while still feeling warm and welcoming. The pastry case was just as impressive. There were rustic artisan loaves, oversized cookies, cinnamon rolls, pecan sticky buns, savory pastries, specialty Cruffins like the Banana Dulce de Leche and Cherry Cereal, along with a seasonal drink menu featuring items like the Biscoff Cookie Cold Brew, Hawaiian Latte, and Strawberry Cloud Matcha. Everything looked fresh and intentionally displayed--it was honestly difficult to decide what to order. I originally planned to leave with only the sourdough starter, but ended up adding the Quiche Lorraine, which was excellent once I got home. The crust stayed wonderfully flaky, and the filling was rich and flavorful without feeling overly heavy. The staff made an already great experience even better. They patiently answered my beginner questions about caring for sourdough starter and never made me feel rushed, despite how busy the bakery was. My total came to roughly $22, including the quiche, sourdough starter, tax, tip, and I walked away feeling like it was an excellent value for the quality of the products and service I received. I'd especially recommend JL Patisserie for adults looking for a leisurely morning coffee or pastry, anyone interested in artisan baking, or those wanting something beyond a typical neighborhood coffee shop. Families are certainly welcome, but this is an order-at-the-counter bakery that can get quite busy on weekend mornings, so arriving early is probably your best bet. I came looking for sourdough starter and ended up finding a bakery I'll be making excuses to return to. Places like this are more than just somewhere to grab breakfast--they become part of a neighborhood, bringing people together over good food and good conversation. Stopped by 9am on a Friday morning (the weekend of their Pacific Islander goodies aka also their collab with Loco Style Grindz). There was a line inside just to the door, and we shuffled through in about 10 min. The specialty cruffins were already running low (about 5 each left, including the ones in the display case). We got each of the specials (one of each cruffin, the kalua pork croissant sandwich, and the mango coconut rice danish. Loved the matcha macadamia nut cruffin (the macadamia mousse was divine). Wasn't a huge fan of the strikingly purple Ube cruffin, as there wasn't that much Ube flavor (tasted just like extract, real Ube next time or not at all). But mousse over cheesecake filling as my personal preference since the cruffins are FILLED to the brim. The cheesecake filling was ever so slightly grainy to me. The croissant sandwich was a BANGER, but you had to get it heated up...really any thing that can be heated up (sans fruit) should be heated up IMO. Didn't care for the danish because cold rice is just a nono for me :/ the danish itself was good, and I will say it photographed beautifully. My friend ordered a coffee, which took around ~5 min to be called. I've visited the Shea Blvd location a couple times, and this lot is smaller for sure. The specialty cruffins here were sold out by 9:30/10am. We got an assortment of pastries from chocolate croissants , cruffins, cinnamon buns and a loaf of bread. I gave it a 3 star because all the pastries we had were just too decadent and sugary...most everything was covered in granulated sugar and tasted like pastries from the day before (not fresh, a bit dry). Finally tried this place and it did not disappoint! My friend and I grabbed a variety of sweet & savory pastries. We got there around 8am on a Sunday and there was line but it wasn't a long wait. We wanted to get there early since we heard that items can sell out by the time they close. The stand outs for me were the Croque Monsieur & their Cruffins! They heated up our Croque Monsieur for us since we wanted to eat it in the cafe. Definitely this had to be shared between me & my friend! It's very hearty, but absolutely delicious! I'd totally get it again! The 2 specialty Cruffins we tried were a Cookies & Cream Cruffin & Blackberry Ricotta Cruffin. Both had a delicious filling and were unlike anything I've never had! They change out their flavors often, which only makes me want to come back and try their other flavors. Note: I was told that they only serve cruffins on the weekends so you have been warned! We also brought back a lot of pastries to try! Like their pistachio croissant & their Guava Cheese croissant which were my friend's favorite! Had this placed booked marked after the Tik Tok incident that made this place go absolutely viral in the best way possible! Today was the day to experience this spot after taking family to the airport. It's about a 10 minute drive from there. Location on a busy corner and not a lot of parking, so time of arrival can be limited to find a space. We were there just prior to noon, so there were a few parking spots open. You can take your food to go or they have some inside seating and a nice outdoor patio. So many sweet treat! The croissants are so flaky and exactly like what you would find in Europe & France. It is nothing like the breads baked we usually find here. Finally found time to check out this viral bakery/cafe and it did not disappoint! I came by on a Thursday morning around 845a and there was no wait/line. The people working were all very friendly. The parking lot is kind of small, but since it was slow I was able to find a spot. There was indoor and outdoor seating + an area with merch and grab/go drinks to purchase! I would highly recommend JL patisserie if you are looking to indulge and treat yourself. My friend and I stopped by after the brunch rush and enjoyed a ham & cheese croissant. They offer to heat it up for you too. I loved the flaky crust and the delicious filling. I also got a Hawaiian latte which was all I could've dreamed it to be. I love the little dehydrated pineapple too as a garnish - too cute. There's a few tables inside which we opted for since it was warm outside. Absolutely gobsmacked by how decadent the pastries my fiancé and I tried. We ordered an almond croissant and cinnamon roll cruffin, alongside 2 lattes; salted maple + vanilla. The almond croissant was delicious and so beautiful. I truly have no words. The frangipane melts in your mouth and the croissant was light and airy. It was just the right amount of sweet. The cinnamon roll cruffin was also perfectly baked, and the filling was delicious, although a bit too sweet for me. Both coffees were good, but the salted maple was better and more espresso forward than the flavoring- which I appreciated! It offset the pastries nicely. We were able to sit outside and enjoy some of the gloomy July weather, making for a lovely Sunday morning date. My only qualm was the ordering system, as there was a group in front of us and we were unable to view the entire pastry case before ordering. I promptly realized WA had made me a coffee snob. I've been trying to find coffee made like my favorite shops back home to no avail. I took one sip of this coffee and was overcome with nostalgia. This is the best iced coffee beverage I've had in the valley. I don't know who their roaster is, but I need to know STAT. The flavor of the coffee itself is unbelievable. The drink was definitely on the sweeter side, so if that's not your thing, I wouldn't suggest the PSL. I, for one, enjoy a sweet coffee. It was right up my alley. I'll be dreaming about that drink until I have it again. Now, let's focus on the food. The black sesame strawberry cruffin was everything I wanted it to be and more. This pastry has everything. The outside texture is so flakey and firm, while the filling is creamy and jammy. The black sesame flavor is so unique. I wouldn't describe it as savory, but it's definitely not a heavily sweetened bread. The sesame flavor is forward and delicious. That paired with the more sweet filling is a perfectly balanced bite. Sometimes when eating sweets, I feel like I'm done after a couple bites because it's too rich. I ate half of this pastry and enjoyed the last bite as much as the first. I tried bites of both the pistachio chocolate and almond croissants. To my surprise, I enjoyed the almond more. It was so buttery and the nutty flavor of the almond was decadent. I almost wish the pistachio hadn't had chocolate in it, but that had everything to do with my personal preference. It was delicious as well, especially if you're a chocolate lover. The girls at this location were helpful and patient as we decided on which goodies to take home. They have a great selection of macaroons and creative pastries, as well as a variety of fresh bread and even quiche. Everything looks absolutely beautiful! They also have a variety of coffee drinks, including seasonal specials. I tried one of those seasonal specials, the salted maple shaker, and was glad I ordered a large. It's an iced drink with espresso, milk, maple syrup, and a little bit of salt. It was refreshing and not too sweet, and I liked the subtle salt kick at the end of a sip. I also ordered a croissant and a kouign amann, and both were fantastic (although the shatteringly crisp outer layers of the croissant made a mess of my table).
