Ok first off it's not a buffet, but never mind that! It has that 'old world' deli feel that I love. Meats are freshly sliced to order. Pastrami was delicious. Side slaw and Mac salad were really good. The bonus gravy on the side was a nice surprise, that made for some good sandwich dunking. What a local gem! read more

A true historic fixture of downtown Fairfield. I've been going here over 30 years, and not much has changed, including the best sandwiches! Well, I guess we don't walk through the kitchen anymore... :) I'm not sure why you can't find this kind of sandwich shop anywhere else.? You'd think this simple approach to a rich helping of delicious meats, served in fresh breads with typical fixings and a side au jus/gravy would be replicated. Perhaps its a dying art? The sides vary but haven't changed much through the years. Sandwiches and helpings are generous. I sometimes stray from my usual "Joe's Special" (pastrami/roast beef), but I'm never disappointed. Ever. Last, I have said this for years... Saeed is the sandwich-making Opposite of the Soup Nazi. I went here on a road trip. My friend looked up places to eat and Joe's Buffet came up. Since my name is Joe, we decided we had to go there. When we showed up, we were surprised to find that this wasn't a buffet at all, but a sandwich shop. I asked the guy what I should get and he let me try all the meats. I went with the roast beef and pastrami. It was the best roast beef dip I've ever had. My friend is a vegetarian and walked somewhere else to grab food and I'm glad she wasn't there to see me me eat it. I turned into my fat kid self and fucking destroyed that thing. The meat was so tender and flavorful and the au jus was wonderful. When my friend got back i looked like I had gotten beat up. She saw me and said I guess you liked the sandwich. The sides were great too, which they had a ton of options and on top of that Joe was a super cool dude. If you're anywhere near this place go, it's terrific. read more

Well, a very recent visit was unfortunately disappointing, in terms of taste. The service was great, though, and it almost felt like the 1970's when one could grab a sandwich here and sneak it into one of the theaters across the way. 1) The mashed potatoes tasted pasty, just like the boxed powder types. I realize that almost every place uses powdered potatoes these days, but Joe's always seemed to do it well enough to conceal that fact, but not this time. Before, I believe they whipped it with butter and milk. 2) The au jus was a real disappointment this time, watery and one-dimensional. Not bad, mind you, but not what I have been used to. 3) The roast beef was fine, and the pastrami was OK ( old-school cold cut type, not the modern navel cut or the NY-styled one ). After having Joe's on my radar for the past 3 years during the courses of my business visits, I finally had a chance to experience the joy of a Joe's famous sandwich. And let me tell ya, folks...these reviews don't lie. It's very unassuming from the outside, and equally simplistic on the inside. But in my past experiences, these are telltale signs that an establishment focuses more on the product and less on the fluff. I walked in and informed the friendly lady behind the counter that this was my first time. Almost immediately, Joe himself said, "come on over here, let me give you the grand tour." He showed my the roast beef, the turkey, the corned beef, and there was one more meat that I can't recall. But I knew I had to do the roast beef, as that's their specialty. I got it the standard way, without mayo. I also got au jus on the side, and a side of their pasta salad. I took a seat in their huge dining area, and the very first bite had my head nodding YES! Hailing fro Chicago, the home of the Italian Beef, I was pleasantly surprised at how delicious this simple notion of a basic sandwich was. The beef was incredibly tender and flavorful, the au jus was a perfect dipping gravy consistency, and the pasta salad was flavorful and light. And everything set me back like, 12 bucks...not bad at all for a sandwich that kept me full until well past dinnertime. I'm kicking myself for not making time during my previous visits to Fairfield to visit this iconic establishment. But I know I'll be back next time. Thanks again, Joe! read more

5-6-22. A group of 9 of us came here for lunch. First, you have to order & pay at a deli counter. The sandwich is prepared right there. And you can also choose from a variety of side dishes as a special. Not everyone in the group was completely happy with their food. A few people said the sandwich was bland. My buddy &I shared a bowl of macaroni salad. He didn't think it had enough flavor. For me it was fine. There is a dining area for those that want to eat in, so we all decided to dine in. It was kind of nice although not spotless. There was one young lady who wiped down the tables periodically. Some of the customers left a mess after eating. I found that kind of off putting. My roast beef sandwich was good to me. I had them add pepper Jack cheese to it. I like the au jus sauce they add on the side. My friend had some complaints but he can discuss that in his own review. Overall, we agree that the service is good & friendly, & the food is quite good& like a lot of things, it could be better. We will definitely be back in the summer, probably with a group. read more

Don't left the fact that the building exterior needs a coat of paint. This place has been in business for a long time and has a dedicated following. This was my first visit here and I was greeted very nicely by Joe, and staff, as I walked in. I asked him what he recommended for a sandwich and I was told they're known for their French Dip. Slices of it looked so tantalizing in the hot steamship pan I had no problem saying yes. Dip the bread in the au jus sauce, add provolone cheese and lettuce and I'm good to go! Lots of tender beef made me realize i wouldn't have room for many of their tempting side dishes. Now I'll jump to the end...it was the best, and most tender, French Dip I've ever had! I'll be back! Joe's is THE BEST mom and pop sandwich shop between Sacramento and San Francisco hands down. Food is 5 star, consistently. The employees treat you like family and the portions are enormous. Everything they serve is fantastic. I get a Turkey and Roast Beef with Cheddar on the roll and the sandwich alone fills me up every time, the dipping juice is a special treat as well! Seriously, I'd say the meat to bread ratio was probably about to 1.2:1. When comparing it to other $8 sammiches, nothing comes close in regards to Joe's generous hand as he slices roast beef right onto your plate. 2) mashed taters and gravy......not just for thanksgiving anymore! I'm regretting this choice as I look around to see if anyone will notice me undoing my belt. Fortunately, this is downtown Fairfield, so I don't think anyone would care.
