    original egg tart
    Michelle L.

Had these at the 2024 Bryant park holiday market and again at the Chelsea market location. Perfection every time. Warm, flaky, custardy goodness. I have tried the chocolate, passionfruit, and their classic original flavors. I would happily eat any of them again though I think my favorite is the original. The custard is perfect- not too gelatinous, not too sweet, not too runny, and no congealed top layer. The most incredible, perfect, wobbly consistency. Magnificent. Under-hyped, these are incredible!

Got a traditional tart which was pretty good. Maybe a bit expensive and the pastry could've been flakier but the filling was creamy and didn't taste too much like egg which I liked. Small kiosk in Chelsea market that was kind of hard to find.

Service: 4/5 Food: 4.7/5 Price: under $5 Inside the Chelsea Market food court. Maybe I came during an off-time, as there were no customers. Warm, flaky pastry with a runny, flavorful filling. Dusted with cinnamon + powdered sugar, which I actually could do without. Tip: specify if you want it for dine-in or to go What I Ordered: - Traditional: not too sweet - Chocolate: more sweet than decadent, layered in the pastry topped

Traditional flavor - omg so good

These are incredible. Got the traditional flavor and it was amazing. They're topped with cinnamon which makes it extra delicious. Wish I got more!

Located in the Chelsea Market, this place serves synthetic Portuguese egg tarts. We decided to try one of each flavor: the classic, passion fruit, and dark chocolate. Classic most certainly was the best. The chocolate was rich and custardy - recommend if you're a chocolate lover . Passion fruit consistency was a mix of textures that was a bit bizarre but the passion fruit definitely came through. Would recommend sticking with the classic: it's classic for a reason!

yummy, buttery but i definitely like the chinese taste more. these are super goopy, not as eggy, but nevertheless yummy still

I love egg tarts and this place was phenomenal. Not much to say, it's a walkup counter in a food hall. Pretty unassuming but I'm glad I stumbled upon it. The packaging is cute and I got 4 to go of the traditional. The crust is flaky, crispy, and buttery. The custard has a rich, creamy, eggy texture that's not too sweet and a very slight smokiness. Even though I ate a full dinner, I wolfed these down. Delicious and worth the stop.

Joey Bats Cafe@Chelsea Market 75 9th. Ave. New York, NY 10011 Traditional Custard Tart This Portuguese dessert was served in a crisp pastry shell filled with custard. If you are adventurous, there are multiple types of tarts ranging from passion fruit to dark chocolate.

Tucked within the vibrant corridors of Chelsea Market, Joey Bats Café is a delightful surprise: a cozy, artful nook offering what many call the most authentic Portuguese custard tarts in New York. Imagine a warm, slightly crackled top melting into a silky, wobbling custard--all resting in a flaky, buttery shell that practically shatters with each bite. That's the magic here. Their pastéis de nata are often compared to Portugal's originals. If you're on a quest for the perfect Portuguese egg tart, Joey Bats Café at Chelsea Market should be at the top of your list. Warm, creamy custard, crispy, delicate shell, and a genuine, cozy vibe--that's what makes these pastéis de nata unforgettable. Whether you're looking for a sweet solo snack or a delightful shareable treat, this café delivers authenticity and indulgence in every bite.

    So good

Get the blueberry. Better than traditional. As close to what I get in Lisbon as I can. Love it.

We got the traditional pasteis de natas -- SO GOOD. My bro has tried pastéis de natas in Portugal, and he verified the ones at Joey Bats are authentic. It has a more custardy center compared to normal egg tarts or the non-authentic portugese egg tarts I had in Hong Kong/Chinese bakeries. After you place your order, they will sprinkle cinnamon powder and powdered sugar on the half caramelized top. There is a heating tray to keep the egg tarts warm.

I was a fan of Joey Bats when they first opened up in the LES and I'm glad to see them doing well with more locations in the city. The Portuguese treats are still scrumptious as ever!

We sat at the cellar dining area and loved the tiles designed dining table. It was a very quiet and intimate environment. We were taken care of very well by the wait staff and they were very knowledgeable of their menu and made great recommendations. We chose to eat family style and ordered a bunch of Sharable Plates and Large Plates. We all fell in love with their Spinach with fava beans, Polvo, and Carne de Porto à Alentejana. As much as I say dont fill up on their Portuguese bread to focus on your main dishes this is one of those few time i disagree as they were amazing and I absolutely loved it especially since it pairs well with the Polvo and Chourico Portuguese Assado. Chourico Portuguese is great due to the table side searing they do and the option of having 1 spicy and 1 non spicy sausage is a great option for people who don't like any heat to their food. The Bolinhos de Bacalhau was great as it was not too salty and the right amount of crunchy. I wasn't too fond of the Arroz de Marisco but I would not say is bad but definitely up to your tastebud if you lose the flavor and the consistency of the rice. Dont skip the roasted potatoes, Spinach with fava beans and shishito peppers for sides as they are wonderful. The Carne de Porto a alentejana was by far the dish i loved the most. The Pork is so tender and juicy but they manage to give it a beautiful crunchy sear on the outside somehow the pork was both sweet and savory. The clam was perfectly cooked I can recommend the dish enough I even used the bread to soak up some of the sauce as it was that good. Definitely a great place to take your friends or significant other for good food

We were not super hungry, which was too bad, because everything sounded great. We ordered the bife a cervejeiro (sirloin in garlic sauce) and it was absolutely delicious. There's a a couple of these spots with the original one being in Middle Village (in queens) but there's also a few other locations as well. I went here with one of my less common groups to sample some of the tasty food here. The head was ordering for us as he had a mild/moderate spice tolerance so we stuck with the less heat focused options but it was still tasty. The service was alright being pretty friendly but not with the best English. I presume the guy spoke Portuguese or something similar. The drink selection has a good soda fountain with more unique options than most. We started with the hummus listed as hummus with a drizzle of peri peri sauce and served with nachos or pita bread. We got it with pita and it was fine. The hummus had a fun spice kick from the peri peri but had some of the creaminess you'd associate with a hummus. I presume they don't make in house but the peri peri was a nice touch. We got two of the Whole Grilled Chickens, Lamb Chops, and the Beef Bites as the main. The former was with a mix of mild and the garlic and herb. The chicken was pretty sauce and quite tasty. A bit of heat but not much as expected but they did have some sauces on the table which helped kicked it up a bit. The lamb chops we got with mango and lime. You couldn't taste the lamb much from the sweet sauce but it was tender and tasty. Pretty solid but tiny chops for the price. If you're looking for something more substantial based on price, the beef bites with flame grilled bite size beef served with rice & salad or fries was probably the most filling. We got the lemon & herb for the beef and the beef could have been a bit more tender but it still had a tasty sauce. For sides, the Grilled Cauliflower was probably the best of the group also having some peri peri on it. The Seasoned Fries were also very tasty with a tiny kick. The Coleslaw was luckily not that watery but lacked a bit of flavor and the Spicy Rice wasn't that spiced and the salad was standard with a creamy dressing. It's hard to rate this spot. The chicken was solid and the food overall was pretty tasty but I find the prices a tad high for just about everything with especially the sides being overpriced for the sizes. Still solid though and I can see why it's liked by a lot of people. Mid 3?

I had the Mini-Quibe de Carne e Queijo (Beef Kibbeh) for an appetizer. How the Chef managed to get the spice to meat tenderness ratio so perfectly, I'll never know but will always be grateful for. I tried the Cajá juice and loved it! Be forewarned, it is not sweet but the fruit is distinctly tart and refreshing. My (huge) entree, the Estrogonofe (Chicken Stroganoff), was recommended to me by my server, who I trust with all food recommendations now because WOW. And finally, I chose Brigadeiro as the sweet treat to cap off my meal. Bite-sized, creamy, decadent, and strongly cacao...no notes.
