Everything about the vibes and food at Macao Trading Co. reminded me of the heyday of Tao back when Tao was still a mainstay of the New York scene. Extravagant, lush, vaguely Asian decorative theme? Check. Menu that has some combination of Asian fusion influences? Yup. Website featuring this tagline, "the brothels and opium dens of old 1930s Macao--a mysterious, adventurous, and decadent time-out-of-time place." Oof. Might need a copy rewrite. Despite the vaguely problematic theme, Macao Trading Co. was hopping on a Saturday night so a recommendation to make reservations especially if you're coming as a large group. The food was pretty good: because of our group size, we were able to sample quite a few dishes. The ones that stood out were the Macanese lobster noodles (the noodles were excellent and held onto the flavor); the side of Sichuan eggplant (don't skimp on this); the mushroom and truffle croquettes (hard to mess this up); and the crispy whole fish which our waitress expertly deboned for us table-side. However, at some point in the evening, it got so extremely loud that I was nearing the point of being in physical pain from a) shouting and b) straining to hear what everyone else was saying. I'm not sure if it was the acoustics of our particular booth but I could hear nearly every word of the investment strategies being vigorously debated by the drunk finance bros sitting behind us. After not going out for so long, my poor grandma ears were dying. Stepping outside was a massive relief.
A typical "team dinner" place I think, it's dimly lit and I think it has signs of how it could be turned into a club. Service was just so-so, they served us two portions of the octopus instead of the croquettes we ordered... also the portion of the octopus was tiny. The music was quite deafening and there were some sound check accidents during the course of dinner... The steamed fish was extremely dry and you can taste the fish was not fresh, not sure why they thought they could overcharge a poorly done dish like this. lobster noodles was honestly the only thing they did right and they only thing that deserve the price point. eggplant was undercooked. we got out of there before dessert because please don't waste your money here. if you want a rowdy dinner please go to catch steak or tao or something.
Celebrated my birthday here with friends and this place did not disappoint! From the service decor to the food everything and everyone was exceptional! The dumplings were delicious and the drinks as well! Only thing that was not as tasty as I thought it would be was the steak. Aside from that I will be definitely be back!
Was our first dinner stop visiting NYC and staying in Tribeca, the food and ambiance is incredible! Smells like incense right outside, and when you walk in, it's like being transported back in time to early 1900s Macau. Moody and reminiscent of an old world and very decadent Macanese lounge, the vibes do not disappoint. We started with the drunken dragon's milk and (zero proof) cartographer, followed by some chicken and pork belly dumplings and lobster noodles. Everything was delicious, and accompanied warm and hospitable service. Would absolutely recommend if you are in the area!

The standouts were the baby back ribs and the dumplings, but the croquettes and calamari were also solid! All happy hour dishes are $12 each and that felt like a good value. Select cocktails are $13 - I got the berry demure and liked it! It's also a really cool vibe inside - we loved the decor and ambiance. The bartender was also great. Can't speak to their traditional menu, but I'd definitely come back here for HH again.
I came here for drinks one evening and had a great time! This restaurant in Tribeca is Chinese-Portugese / Macao-inspired and open late (until 4am on weekends!). Space here is a bit tight; while they have a lot of seating, I felt like tables were small and close together. Service was quick. I got their ribs to share and tried both of their cocktails. Both of the cocktails were amazing and I loved them. Their ribs were also so flavorful and fell off the bone. Would love to come back here to try other food options!
Despite the reference to Macau, there is nothing especially regionally relevant - no egg tarts, cheong fun, or even Portuguese items for that matter. It is "Macau" in a general, perhaps vaguely orientalist sense - an idealized colonial era vision presented in a bastardised Wong Kar Wai aesthetic. The food was generally pretty tasty. We enjoyed the vegetable dumplings, garlicky king oyster mushrooms, and eggplant. I found the vegetable fried rice to be a bit too crunchy with some ingredients that I don't find well suited for the dish - generally I think it could have instead leaned a bit towards the sweeter side.
STEPH JUDGEMENT: Still good after all these years. I last visited this place in 2014, and was pleasantly surprised to see it was still around. Something that I forgot to mention in my last review from ten years ago was that this place opened in the late 90s, when I used to work in the area and I think I might've visited it once or twice with coworkers for drinks but it's a bit fuzzy, as it was over 25 years ago! For a restaurant to last that long anywhere is quite remarkable--clearly they're doing something right. Anyway, on to the review: The building facade was undergoing renovation so was covered in scaffolding, but the interior was just as I remembered it: dark and intriguing. We bellied up to the bar to take advantage of their Trading Hour, which had some pretty good deals. We both got the summer spritzers and I couldn't resist getting the half dozen oysters. The bartender was friendly and solicitous, and we had a nice prelude to the rest of our evening in the area. I hope to see it again the next time I'm in town!
I had the pleasure of being taken here for my birthday dinner. Great ambiance and our server he was the best. In conversation, that his mother and I went to the same high school, go figure. The drinks were good and the food overall was tasty, especially the crispy whole chicken and how its broken down for you at the table. Whatever that sauce is with the calamari is oh, so good. The mushroom dish is just as good . The dumplings wasn't my favorite and wouldn't be something I would order again. Everything else, definitely flavorful and would re order again. Definitely worth a check out and a good spot for a date night.
Cool fusion concept blending Chinese and Portuguese flavors. The cocktails were fantastic -- I ordered the "Memory," and it was easily one of the better bourbon cocktails I've had in a while. Came with a group and we did a bunch of brunch dishes family-style. The standouts were the eggplant app and the salted baked white fish. Overall, great vibe all around -- solid ambiance, good service, and really strong food and drinks.
I was recommended to dine here from a friend of mine, who had nothing but positive things to say. The food was impressive. I really enjoyed every bite of it, along with the hand-crafted cocktail. I would definitely order the calamari and bacon/shrimp fried rice. Ambiance wise also a solid 10/10. The only area lacking would be customer service. It was one waiter for the entire restaurant essentially, and even he took large amounts of time away from the tables, socializing at the bar. It was a really dreadful process having to track him down and ask for anything. Nonetheless, it happens and I still had a good experience! I would definitely come back for the food.
Came here to celebrate my friend's birthday. Easy to make reservations online. Only planned a week before. Arrived on time at 7:30 and they were pretty packed. We ordered a mocktail called the Portable Sunset and the calamari to start. So good. We had to try the Macanese Lobster Noodles which was pretty good and filling. Also got a side of the long beans. We were pretty full although we really wanted to try dessert. The decor was really cool and the service was great. They were very attentive. Will definitely come back to try dessert and drinks next time.
Upon arrival, I was greeted by the host, who I learned later in the evening was the manager, Dinel. The ambiance is warm, cozy, and inviting, the lights were dimmed, the candles flickered, and the music played at the perfect volume. I sat at the bar and ordered a glass of the Syrah blend and started with the octopus. The octopus was juicy, not chewy or overcooked, flavorful, and honestly I would come back just for that. Then I had the grilled skirt steak with the Chinese broccoli and crispy potatoes. The steak was tender, perfectly juicy in the middle, seared to perfection is the best way to put it. Honestly, the best solo date here. I love that there's community at this establishment with lots of regulars at the bar and the bartender, Ana. Thank you for being so attentive, although you were busy. She was able to balance a big crowd while still managing to make sure everyone received proper service. I look forward to returning! WHAT A GEM, SO CLOSE TO IT ALL!!!! MWBE-owned business, wonderful selection of Chine se-Portugese fusion cuisine. We've been here a handful of times, so a review is overdue. We visit when we have a rare date night and always enjoy ourselves. Always warmly greeted by the owner, who guides us to "our" table, no, I'm not telling you which it is. I dream about their Mushroom & Truffle Croquettes, they're perfectly crisp and cheesy. The lemon really adds to the flavor combination. We are routine ppl so we always get the Porterhouse for two. I know there's many delicious dishes to choose but we love the perfectly medium steak, topped with sea salt, accompanied with crispy potatoes and bok choy(I might be wrong). For dessert my go-to is their Coconut Panna Cotta topped with fruit. It's amazing, light and a perfect ending to your meal here. You'll come back again and again. read more

I made reservations for 6:45 for 6 people (the cancellation/no-show fee was $50/pp!) I've heard decent things about this place, however, I was quite disappointed in the food overall. The standouts on the menu were charred octopus and crispy calamari, but other than that, everything else was incredibly subpar. As a group, we were able to sample a bunch of dishes: - African Chicken (visibly dry after cutting into it, and somehow tasted worse than it had looked) - Steamed Fish (while the fish was in a broth, this (and the rice on the side!) were somehow both overcooked) - Char Siu Baby Back Ribs (good flavor, but a bit dry) - Lobster Noodles (lobster was slightly dry & overcooked, noodles were fine) Definitely nothing to write home about, and we honestly didn't want to order more food (even though we could eat more) because we were already disappointed by the dishes thus far. A great late night bar option. Fantastic vibes, good service, delicious drinks. Although, one of my friends found a nail sticking out of the backrest of their bench when we were here. We pointed it out to the waiter and they said they'd take care of it. Hope they did. read more

Best treat in Tribeca! Coolest vibe ever. You walk in to the scent of incense and dim lights. Very speakeasy vibe and the dumplings are out of this world. The staff were incredibly welcoming and always on top of everything. Can't wait to go back read more
Really I would give this place more like a 3.9. Ambiance: 4/5 very beautiful place that is perfect for a date night, but they should reconfigure the seating as we were given a bench for 6 people and it was quite tight. Food: 3/5 some of us really did not care for our food too much because it was a bit bland while others loved it so I think it really depends on what you order. I would not recommend the chicken but the seafood and dumpling lovers at the table were in heaven so I would recommend that. Service: 3/5 aye aye aye what a headache. I think what this place last most is consistency. Some of the food came out within 5 mins while others took 40 mins to arrive leaving some of us at the table with hungry eyes watching everyone else enjoy. Other than that the staff were all lovely people. Overall I don't think there are many options for me as I don't eat seafood or red meat so I likely will not return, but for all the seafood lovers out there this place might be your jam. read more
The interior of Macao Trading Company is designed very nicely! It feels super themed, almost like I was waiting in line at Disneyland. The service was very fast and friendly. Cocktail was good too. The food was underwhelming. The flavors were dull and everything felt overpriced for what we ended up getting. Overall, this restaurant has everything going for it except for the food. read more

I was blown away since the noodles were so tasty and chewy and also the sauce had so much flavor The lobster meat was tender and savory - The dessert was so good the donuts were flakey and chewy and adding on the condensed milk was nice - Very solid ambiance, dimly lit and private booths to eat Bad: - The place is pretty expensive! - Took a long time to flag down waiters and get them to take our orders - nice servers though Overall enjoyed the experience here and would come again! Staff was a delight and they made my friends' and my last meal in New York a great experience! Love the atmosphere and decor of the restaurant also. The outside dining was also well decorated. Since we were visiting, we heard good things about this place. We had a party of 6 and made a reservation for 6 people in advance. I mistakenly reserved on the wrong day and called in to update it with no problems. We also were celebrating my bachelorette party and the drinks were definitely a hit for me. I didn't realize there's happy hour on a Sunday either but that's mainly for bar seating -- will remember for next time! Must get was the crispy fried fish, calamari, and truffle croquettes for us! Something about the fish in NY is just amazingggg. read more

Macao is always a solid choice. The ambiance, food and cocktails are always sublime! Bartenders are well versed on their spirits and service is great. I dearly miss their sister bar Belle Reve, but glad to see Macao still alive and kicking. The ribs are always a solid choice and make sure to try the malasades for dessert! read more
3.8 stars is crazy y'all need to stay of the weeeeeeed!! Macao Trading Co is my gold standard for Asian fusion in nyc. It was my 2nd home when I was subleasing in Tribeca, damn I miss it. Maybe I should call............. For you jocks who didn't pay attention in school, Macao is an autonomous region on the south coast of China which has become known as "Las Vegas as the East." So, it makes sense that the restaurant takes its inspiration from the brothels and opium dens of old 1930s Macao...which is maybe why it's REALLY hard to find on the initial walk by lmaaooo. The first time we came we just kept walking right by it because it is so discrete. Other times I've been, they have the neon sign lit up outside which was much appreciated. I'm deep in a google search rn about Macao (the place) and the more I read about it the more I want to go. Macao was a Portuguese territory until 1999?? Few things fascinate me like a good mixing of vastly different cultures. Okay sorry- back to the restaurant. I think I just have a gnarly undiagnosed case of ADHD sometimes hehe. Upon entry, you feel as though you are walking into an extremely high end opium den ahahahah. They almost have to make a new kind of funny "I take myself way too seriously" kind of architecture name. Let me take a crack at this... *cracks knuckles* ...I'm going to call this Post-Renaissance Pre-Neoclassical Mid-Century Modern Opium Den. Yeah that's the one ahahah. The food here blows me away EVERY time. We got a dozen oysters, fried shrimp dumplings, bacon and shrimp fried rice, Hakka noodles, and the grilled skirt steak. Normally I pick one dish to really highlight but I need to go in here: That green sauce they pair with the Oysters - TO DIE FOR. The shrimp dumplings are elite, with a perfect crunch on the shell but they come hot af so be careful, head on a swivel always. The Bacon and Shrimp fried rice changed my life. Hakka noodles are near perfect, barring the fact I wish there were more noodles...the plate is a bit too vegetable dominant. Skirt Steak Medium rare with an IDEAL char on the outside. After 3-years, I came to this place to see if it was just as good as it was before. And to no surprise. I would still suggest this place for a one-of-a-kind experience, maybe I'm biased because I'm Portuguese ;-) Try the house noodles, the skirt steak, the dumplings and greens - salad. All amazing flavors. Great for a first date - for all those looking for a bit more on the romantic side too. Dark and mysterious feel. read more
What an amazing experience at Macao. I had seen so many great reviews at this restaurant, both for the food and the ambience. There was a bouncer at the door checking IDs which was a little odd for a restaurant but I guess it's not the best area on a Saturday night. We stopped in for dinner with a group of 6 for a stag night. Our server was Liv and she was amazing, we'll revisit her later in this review. The menu offerings for food and beverages were both extensive and appealing from top to bottom. There weren't many options we didn't intrigue us, and to that effect, there weren't many dishes that we didn't order. Suffice to say, we ordered everything. Appetizers- Dumplings - chicken/pork belly was perfectly juicy and salty with the added fat from the pork belly. Shrimp and scallion was a classic. We opted for the fried option for both, which meant deep fried rather than pan fried. I would have preferred the steamed. Mushroom and truffle croquettes - the most decadent croquette. Perfect golden brown delicious on the outside, luscious and creamy on the inside. Calamari - good fry, nice variety of squid pieces Charred Octopus - tender on the inside, charred on the outside with a funky tangy salty salsa verde and black vinegar sauce Mussels - the broth and the pea shoots were the star of this dish for me. mussels were a nice accompaniment Noodles/Rice- Lobster noodles - this was as decadent of a dish as the croquettes. the combination if lobster and beurre blanc was one I didn't know I needed in a noodle dish. Glass noodles - tough to get everything mixed together with the glass noodles a little overcooked but all the components were delicious and had a nice spice to the dish. Bacon/shrimp fried rice - great side dish. classic fried rice dish Entrees- African chicken - juicy tender half chicken, resembles a classic piri piri chicken with an east asian twist Duck breast - arguably the odd dish out of the menu selection but who doesn't love a perfectly seared duck breast. Part of me wished this was served like a peking duck with a homemade pancake on the side but that probably wouldn't fit this setting. Crispy whole fish - what a fun part of the dining experience. Our server Liv cleaned the fish table-side for service. She clearly had practice because the bones ended up bare and the fillets came out flawless. Cocktails- Mah Jong - great twist on the classic Manhattan cocktail. Probably my favorite of the night Bashful maiden - another twist on a French gimlet. Macao Trading Company is a Chinese-Portuguese fusion restaurant set in an old gambling parlor in SoHo. We came for a midweek dinner and enjoyed a family-style meal. We started off with some stellar cocktails, calamari, shrimp and scallion dumplings, and char siu bbq baby back ribs. All the starters were amazing but the ribs will have us going back just to have them again. For entrees we had the African chicken for two smothered in creamy peanut curry sauce and piri piri as well as the incredible lobster noodles topped with lobster tail. Both entrees were fantastic and justified the somewhat eye watering price tags. For dessert we had the malasadas, mini Portuguese donuts, with dulce de leche and yuzu anglaise and chocolate mousse tart special. Sat at bar on a Monday and it was not crowded at all. Love the decor. Ordered all the food on the happy hour menu. For $12 each they were good but I don't know that I liked anything enough to pay the normal menu price for it. The pork belly gets lost in the dumplings and can only really taste the chicken. The chili oil that came with it was delicious though. The barbecue pork ribs were also good but we're a little cold and not very tender. Calamari were crispy and love the flavor, but the pieces were really small. Oysters for two dollars and happy hour were great no complaints. Truffle and mushroom croquettes were good but a little oilier than I expected. Love that they have so many cocktails and mocktails. Definitely have to do the cocktails with pandan as they are unique. Staff super nice. Very much gave me the vibe of if Sip and Guzzle had a baby with Employees Only. But the food here isn't quite as good in my opinion (only based on happy hour). read more
