I made reservations for 6:45 for 6 people (the cancellation/no-show fee was $50/pp!) I've heard decent things about this place, however, I was quite disappointed in the food overall. The standouts on the menu were charred octopus and crispy calamari, but other than that, everything else was incredibly subpar. As a group, we were able to sample a bunch of dishes: - African Chicken (visibly dry after cutting into it, and somehow tasted worse than it had looked) - Steamed Fish (while the fish was in a broth, this (and the rice on the side!) were somehow both overcooked) - Char Siu Baby Back Ribs (good flavor, but a bit dry) - Lobster Noodles (lobster was slightly dry & overcooked, noodles were fine) Definitely nothing to write home about, and we honestly didn't want to order more food (even though we could eat more) because we were already disappointed by the dishes thus far. Everything about the vibes and food at Macao Trading Co. reminded me of the heyday of Tao back when Tao was still a mainstay of the New York scene. Extravagant, lush, vaguely Asian decorative theme? Check. Menu that has some combination of Asian fusion influences? Yup. Website featuring this tagline, "the brothels and opium dens of old 1930s Macao--a mysterious, adventurous, and decadent time-out-of-time place." Oof. Might need a copy rewrite. Despite the vaguely problematic theme, Macao Trading Co. was hopping on a Saturday night so a recommendation to make reservations especially if you're coming as a large group. The food was pretty good: because of our group size, we were able to sample quite a few dishes. The ones that stood out were the Macanese lobster noodles (the noodles were excellent and held onto the flavor); the side of Sichuan eggplant (don't skimp on this); the mushroom and truffle croquettes (hard to mess this up); and the crispy whole fish which our waitress expertly deboned for us table-side. However, at some point in the evening, it got so extremely loud that I was nearing the point of being in physical pain from a) shouting and b) straining to hear what everyone else was saying. I'm not sure if it was the acoustics of our particular booth but I could hear nearly every word of the investment strategies being vigorously debated by the drunk finance bros sitting behind us. Smells like incense right outside, and when you walk in, it's like being transported back in time to early 1900s Macau. I was so pleasantly surprised by Macao! Met a few friends here and ordered everything on the "trading hour" menu (offered Sun-Thurs from 5-7pm) and everything was really good! The standouts were the baby back ribs and the dumplings, but the croquettes and calamari were also solid! All happy hour dishes are $12 each and that felt like a good value. It is "Macau" in a general, perhaps vaguely orientalist sense - an idealized colonial era vision presented in a bastardised Wong Kar Wai aesthetic. The food was generally pretty tasty. We enjoyed the vegetable dumplings, garlicky king oyster mushrooms, and eggplant. STEPH JUDGEMENT: Still good after all these years. I last visited this place in 2014, and was pleasantly surprised to see it was still around. Something that I forgot to mention in my last review from ten years ago was that this place opened in the late 90s, when I used to work in the area and I think I might've visited it once or twice with coworkers for drinks but it's a bit fuzzy, as it was over 25 years ago! For a restaurant to last that long anywhere is quite remarkable--clearly they're doing something right. Anyway, on to the review: The building facade was undergoing renovation so was covered in scaffolding, but the interior was just as I remembered it: dark and intriguing. We bellied up to the bar to take advantage of their Trading Hour, which had some pretty good deals. We both got the summer spritzers and I couldn't resist getting the half dozen oysters. The ambiance is warm, cozy, and inviting, the lights were dimmed, the candles flickered, and the music played at the perfect volume. I sat at the bar and ordered a glass of the Syrah blend and started with the octopus. The octopus was juicy, not chewy or overcooked, flavorful, and honestly I would come back just for that. Then I had the grilled skirt steak with the Chinese broccoli and crispy potatoes. The steak was tender, perfectly juicy in the middle, seared to perfection is the best way to put it. I was recommended to dine here from a friend of mine, who had nothing but positive things to say. The food was impressive. I really enjoyed every bite of it, along with the hand-crafted cocktail. I would definitely order the calamari and bacon/shrimp fried rice. Ambiance wise also a solid 10/10. The only area lacking would be customer service. It was one waiter for the entire restaurant essentially, and even he took large amounts of time away from the tables, socializing at the bar. Ambiance: 4/5 very beautiful place that is perfect for a date night, but they should reconfigure the seating as we were given a bench for 6 people and it was quite tight. Food: 3/5 some of us really did not care for our food too much because it was a bit bland while others loved it so I think it really depends on what you order. I would not recommend the chicken but the seafood and dumpling lovers at the table were in heaven so I would recommend that. Service: 3/5 aye aye aye what a headache. I think what this place last most is consistency. Really solid dinner here tonight! We had a large group, so we were in the private room which was just the perfect size, with great ambiance and atmosphere. I loved the scent of the incense in the air - if you don't like that, then you won't enjoy it but I sure did. Seemed like cocktails were a hit. I had the white tiger and it was great. For appetizers, we had a salad that was just fine and something else that maybe looked like hummus but didn't taste like it - it's dark in the room, so it's hard to tell. Regardless it was good. For mains, we had the African chicken which was really good, fried rice which was delicious, and a steamed red snapper which smelled AWFUL but actually tasted super mind and great. For non-fish eaters the smell was a lot but again, it was really good. Dessert was a fruit tart of sorts. Delicious. Service was solid too. All in all, good place and would recommend trying it out! The vibe is relaxed with dim lighting, and the bartenders actually care about making something you will love. They do not measure and instead ask about the flavors you are into, then freestyle a cocktail that fits. Ask them about it and they will be more than happy to explain. On Fridays and Saturdays, the basement club turns into a different world with dark lighting, high energy, and a packed crowd. It feels like a hidden party that locals know well. I don't give 5 stars lightly, so trust me when I say this place earned it for the food. The service was fantastic too, our water glasses were never empty and the space is nicely decorated, very cool interior (wooden with high ceilings and a balcony area, looks like a fancy trading post) complete with a massive bar. The food knocked our socks off. The only thing that was good but not great was the shrimp and scallion dumplings. Again, they were tasty and a decent size (4 per order, two big bites per dumpling), but compared to the other dishes they just didn't hold up since the entrees were so unbelievable amazing. As a table of two, we ordered the African chicken for one (you can order for one or two), the duck, the lobster noodles and a side of the sichuan eggplant. We really enjoyed the eggplant, but the 3 entrees were the stars. The chicken had tons of flavor and great texture. The slaw underneath the chicken was really tasty too. The duck was delicious and paired really well with the cucumber and mango. The lobster noodles are arguably the best lobster noodles we have had (and we are no strangers to lobster noodles). Absolutely perfectly cooked lobster (you get two small tails) coupled with a chili beurre blanc. It is just divine. For a regular eater, the lobster noodles would be a decent entree, but if you are hungry or like to eat, it is not sufficient on its own. It was a really incredible meal, so much so that we already have a reservation to go back next month. The prices are not cheap, but for the quality of the food it is worth the splurge. read more

What an amazing experience at Macao. I had seen so many great reviews at this restaurant, both for the food and the ambience. There was a bouncer at the door checking IDs which was a little odd for a restaurant but I guess it's not the best area on a Saturday night. We stopped in for dinner with a group of 6 for a stag night. Our server was Liv and she was amazing, we'll revisit her later in this review. The menu offerings for food and beverages were both extensive and appealing from top to bottom. There weren't many options we didn't intrigue us, and to that effect, there weren't many dishes that we didn't order. Suffice to say, we ordered everything. Appetizers- Dumplings - chicken/pork belly was perfectly juicy and salty with the added fat from the pork belly. Shrimp and scallion was a classic. We opted for the fried option for both, which meant deep fried rather than pan fried. I would have preferred the steamed. Mushroom and truffle croquettes - the most decadent croquette. Perfect golden brown delicious on the outside, luscious and creamy on the inside. Calamari - good fry, nice variety of squid pieces Charred Octopus - tender on the inside, charred on the outside with a funky tangy salty salsa verde and black vinegar sauce Mussels - the broth and the pea shoots were the star of this dish for me. mussels were a nice accompaniment Noodles/Rice- Lobster noodles - this was as decadent of a dish as the croquettes. the combination if lobster and beurre blanc was one I didn't know I needed in a noodle dish. Glass noodles - tough to get everything mixed together with the glass noodles a little overcooked but all the components were delicious and had a nice spice to the dish. I came here for the bar, which is downstairs. The space was super hot as the AC was barely keeping the space cool. My friends and I ended up going back upstairs because it was getting uncomfortable from the humidity and heat on a summer night. We decided to get some food when we found out the kitchen was still open. There were a lot of empty tables, so it was strange when a waiter asked us to move elsewhere because it was reserved. Why is someone reserving a table to eat at 1am and why couldn't they take any other table in the entire space? It was completely empty, but we moved over anyways. We started off with some stellar cocktails, calamari, shrimp and scallion dumplings, and char siu bbq baby back ribs. All the starters were amazing but the ribs will have us going back just to have them again. For entrees we had the African chicken for two smothered in creamy peanut curry sauce and piri piri as well as the incredible lobster noodles topped with lobster tail. Both entrees were fantastic and justified the somewhat eye watering price tags. Sat at bar on a Monday and it was not crowded at all. Love the decor. Ordered all the food on the happy hour menu. For $12 each they were good but I don't know that I liked anything enough to pay the normal menu price for it. The pork belly gets lost in the dumplings and can only really taste the chicken. The chili oil that came with it was delicious though. The barbecue pork ribs were also good but we're a little cold and not very tender. Calamari were crispy and love the flavor, but the pieces were really small. Oysters for two dollars and happy hour were great no complaints. Truffle and mushroom croquettes were good but a little oilier than I expected. Love that they have so many cocktails and mocktails. Definitely have to do the cocktails with pandan as they are unique.
