Well I certainly wasn't going to come to Hawaii without trying the somewhat infamous Loco Moco concoction, so when I saw it at an eatery within the Whaler's Village shopping center, it wasn't a difficult choice. I placed my order for the Loco Moco ("white rice, homemade beef patty, 2 eggs any style w/gravy") and it was ready about 15 minutes later. Indeed, it's quite the dish to behold. It's a messy pile of food places atop a cheap paper plate, which is pretty much exactly what I was hoping for. The first few bites were unimpressive, admittedly. The individual components aren't anything special; the gravy was thin and tasted artificial, the patty was mediocre at best, and the overeasy eggs were quite underdone. But when you eat everything together, this is a pretty darn tasty concoction. Breaking the yolk over the whole thing takes it to the next level and I can only imagine how delicious this would be had it been prepared with better-quality ingredients and components. read more

The fried rice uses sticky rice so it's very good and different from your normal Asian fried rice where either short grain or long grain is used. The pork adobo is nasty. It's a food window in the Whaler's Village. There is seating but not what I would expect for the resort area. Very casual. It was early and we walked up to look at the menu. The lady at the counter seemed a bit hurried for us to place an order. I walked away and left it to my husband to order his breakfast. We rejoined at a community table outside. He had the usual American breakfast of eggs, bacon, potatoes, and toast on a plastic tray. I felt bad for him. We were looking for a proper sit-down breakfast restaurant and Joey's just didn't fit the bill but it put food in his stomach and we continued on down the road. The food was fine. Cooked properly and not too pricey for what it was. Ignore the bad reviews. After a long day with multiple tours around the island, we were wandering around Whaler's Village on empty stomachs, looking for the next spot to eat at. We became so lazy that we just decided to look to Yelp to choose for us; the first place to pop up with good reviews would be our dinner choice. I'm glad we found Joey's Kitchen because I had a great experience with very delicious food, fast service, and great prices! This place is considered Asian Fusion so they have a ton of different choices for just about everyone, except the crazy people who don't like Asian food. I ordered the Hawaiian Plate and it came with pork in this leaf thing, (I forgot what it was called) macaroni salad, and rice. Everything was cooked perfectly and the pork was sooooo flavorful. I also got brussel sprouts that had some kind of cheese on it. WOW. I've never loved eating brussel sprouts so much. I don't understand any of the bad reviews! I was craving a kalbi plate and was excited to try Joey's kitchen since they're always busy at the Napili location. It was we probably the worse food I've had in Hawaii so far. The kalbi was drowning in sauce and way too salty--this is coming from someone who loves salt and adds salt to everything. The Mac was also drowning in Mayo. The menu looked great for a quick dinner on our last night on the island, so I placed an order and asked how long it would be. She said "5-10 minutes." At 15 minutes, I checked whether my order had been lost. At 20 minutes, I checked again. At 25 minutes I realized there were still about ten orders ahead of mine in the queue, and just walked away and got a slice of pizza instead. I wonder if my order ever came. I'm not merciless about unexpected delays, but the kitchen didn't appear to be on fire. They just don't seem to have the capacity to run a fast casual counter in a food court, and apparently aren't honest about that. read more

Joey's became one of our preferred "cheaper" places to dine at during our stay at the Hyatt in Maui. During our stay we went here about three times. Twice for breakfast and once for dinner. Braised Beef Shortribs with Coconut Shrimp ($21)- This huge and deliciously flavored shortrib came out with some rice and macaroni salad. The shortrib was amazing and definitely worth getting. The coconut shrimp was also impressive. It was served with a sweet and sour aioli sauce. Fresh Fish & Coconut Shrimp ($21)- This was similar to the braised beef shortrib dish except it had fish. The fish they served was a dense white fish. I'm not too sure exactly which fish. It was very filling and vaguely lacked in flavor. The sweet and sour sauce and hot sauce helped. Breakfast Burrito ($8)- This was off their breakfast menu. It was filled with garlic fried rice, bacon, sausages, egg, and cheese. It wasn't super impressive or special but not bad. Breakfast Platter ($9)- It contained scrambled eggs, spam, sausages, and rice. Also not impressive but not bad. This place is located in the mall on the first floor in the food court. The food normally takes awhile but its one of the better options for food there I thought. They have a large variety for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Joeys was on the lower level next to ohana's tacos, which has the best white rice i might add. I tried the mahi and coconut shrimp. The whole meal was succulent from first bite untill the last. Honestly this used to be our favorite spot. We stay each year for 2 weeks and we probably ate there 3-4 times each year. But each year the prices have gone up, they are in a mall Food court and you're paying high end restaurant prices. Not only that the food quality had gone WAY down. We stopped in for some comfort food. It's located in a food court in Whaler's Village. Hubs wanted ramen and our first choice for ramen was all booked up. So Yelp led us here. The katsu chicken was fried excellent, Mac salad was below average. It was dry and bland, I like my Mac salad more wet. The miso ramen was decent. It was good for a place that's more known for their grilled or fried plate dishes. Not sure why we had to wear masks in the stuffy non-air conditioned food court when none of the kitchen staff through the window were wearing masks. Just make sure to have them validate your parking ticket or else you will have to pay at the exit. I read other Yelp reviews and lots of folks seemed to enjoy it. Perhaps we should have tried this restaurant during lunch or dinner because their breakfast menu sounded pretty basic and their prices are high. It's like a glorified food court type of restaurant with no AC. It felt like a sauna in there. No wonder nobody was sitting inside. You place your order at the counter and find a table. When your number is called, you pick up your tray of food on paper plates. You really can't go wrong with spam, scrambled eggs, Portuguese sausage and rice. The menu is heavily Filipino and asian influenced combined with a local Hawaiian-style mix plate. We ordered: - Lumpia - Adobo Fried Rice - Half Short Rib / Half Katsu with rice and mac salad Everything was excellent. The short rib was falling apart. The katsu was really crispy.
